The Australian Zoo Wildlife Hospital relies on the support of the community, suppliers and sponsors to keep the hospital running. There are numerous ways you can help! The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital originated in 2004 in memory of Lyn Irwin (Steve Irwin’s mother), who was a pioneer in wildlife care in Queensland. The building was an old avocado packing shed, outfitted with medical equipment to become a functioning wildlife hospital. A brand new facility was opened on Steve Irwin Day (15 November) 2008 and is currently Australia’s largest and busiest wildlife hospital, providing free veterinary care for thousands of native Australian wildlife every year. A lot of these patients have been critically injured by motor vehicles, domestic pet attacks and through land clearing. The hospital treats every kind of native wildlife you can imagine from kangaroos, emus, echidnas, snakes, pelicans, sugar-gliders, sea turtles and platypuses. The hospital is staffed by leading wildlife veterinarians and nurses dedicated to the humane care and treatment of wild animals and to returning them fit and healthy back to their natural environment. Did you know? •Nearly 100 wildlife emergency calls are received every day. •Approximately 70% of patients are victims of motor vehicle accidents or domestic pet attacks. •The cost to treat one animal ranges from $100 to thousands of dollars. •The hospital is open 24-hours-a-day, 365 days a year. •The hospital treats wildlife from 100,000 square km area over southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales. •The hospital undertakes research into koala diseases, migration patterns and wildlife health management. •In keeping with the principles of ecological sustainability, the new hospital building features “green” design and materials. •Take a behind-the-scenes tour. Tours are offered five times daily and all proceeds go towards hospital patients. •Host your next meeting or conference in the hospital conference room. All conference room hire fees go towards our very special patients. •Become a Koala Crusader*, a group of dedicated people helping to fund research into koala diseases. •Become a corporate sponsor! Various sponsorship packages are available with a variety of benefits to your business or corporate organisation. •Volunteer your time! Even if it is as little as two hours a week, we need your help. •Become a Wildlife Warrior* from $2.50 per week.
