Building for Wildlife

Now is the time to make those nesting boxes
for your yard. There are lots of different design
patterns you can find at the library or on the
internet or in your favorite wildlife book. The
more variety in the design of your nest boxes,
the more variety of birds and animals you will
attract. So get out to your garage or woodshop
with some scrap wood and cool box patterns and
start cutting! This is a great gift idea for those
friends who have everything…..

FUNDRAISERS BIG SUCCESS!

During the 2013 Seafood Festival and the Greater Gulf Coast Arts Festival the Wildlife Sanctuary of NWFL was
extremely fortunate to have some wonderful people go out of their way to hold a fundraiser to benefit the critters.
Anything from pulled pork sandwiches to freshly cooked fish tacos were served up for a donation to the Sanctuary.
The food was a huge hit as was “Team Cayenne” named for the Wildlife Sanctuary’s red phase Eastern Screech
Owl, ambassador for the events. Chef Dan Dunn and his friends cooked on the grill and greeted visitors beside the
Pensacola Bay Brewery. People were lined up waiting for delightful taste treats and a chance to see the Wildlife
Sanctuary’s educational birds.
The events were a BIG success due to Dan Dunn, Mark Robertson, Nathan Holler, Steve Moody, Gina Dudley,
Kevin Hobbs, Norman Colburn, Daniel Watts, Simon Dunn, Chris Robertson, Bill Strength, David Owsley,
Hilton Pensacola Beach Gulf Front, Todd James, and Chris Johnson of City Grocery. Thank You all!!!

A Look Inside

All of us here at the Wildlife Sanctuary are obviously animal lovers and are “owned” by at least one dog or cat at
home. They greet us at the door every day seemingly excited to see us. The sad truth, at least at my house, is this
enthusiasm is just a ruse. My pets, while happy I am home, are really more excited at the prospect of a getting
a treat or meal of some kind! As a pet owner, it can be overwhelming going into any pet food isle at the store in
search of the “best” foods for your critters. The variety of choices for dogs and cats are endless.
Imagine then, the Wildlife Sanctuary, trying to provide the proper diet for over 159 different species of birds,
mammals and reptiles!!! This is what we do at the Sanctuary, 365 days per year! In 2013 alone, we admitted
125 species of birds, 21 species of mammals and 13 species of reptiles! Dietary needs can vary greatly so it is
necessary to know exactly what is best for each species. It is a challenge to actually have all the necessary foods
on hand each and every day because we never know exactly what each day will bring us!
Stay tuned….with the 2014 baby season upon us, it will be interesting to see what new species we may see!!!
Wait and Watch Before Rescuingby

With the ice and cold that we’ve had this winter it’s hard to think about spring, but it’s just around the corner. And spring
means that the critters’ instincts will be turning to nesting and raising babies. Just to make sure that wildlife offspring
don’t get “rescued” unnecessarily, here are a few things to keep in mind:
Make sure they are really orphaned. Baby birds will fledge from the nest before they can actually fly. If they are
feathered, have a short tail and are hopping around your yard, try to keep an eye on them from inside your house. Mom
and dad are letting them learn how to be a bird but are definitely feeding them as necessary. Keeping your cats and dogs
inside will be a big help as the fledglings are very vulnerable during the week or so that they are on the ground. Even if
you are sure that one parent is missing, the other parent will usually take over the feeding duties.
A lot of times baby fawns get “rescued” unnecessarily. The mom will place her baby or babies in a safe spot and leave
them there for a few hours. This helps keep predators from finding them as fawns don’t have any scent. As long as a
baby is not in harm’s way, watch from a distance to see if mom returns to feed it.
Of course we are here to help if you are certain that any wildlife is truly orphaned or there are injuries. If you have any
doubt as to what to do, you can always give us a call for advice. Code 39-9.006(1)(a) of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service states that you have 24 hours to turn wildlife over to a licensed rehabilitation facility. It is always best not to feed
it or give it water. Keep it in a dark, warm, quiet place and bring it to the sanctuary as soon as possible. Thank you in

GIVING WILDLIFE
A HELPING HAND

One thing that we see with great regularity is wildlife
young and parents that are caught by cats. Once
caught, infection from the cat’s teeth or claws or
the stress of capture often results in death. Our best
chance to help is if the animal is brought to us as soon
as possible.
The most important thing you can do for wildlife is
to keep your cat(s) inside. Putting a bell on a cat’s
collar does not prevent them from killing wildlife.
Cats learn to stalk silently but even if they don’t, wild
animals do not necessarily associate the ringing of a
bell with danger. Wildlife in the Western Hemisphere
did not evolve in the presence of a small, abundant
predator like the domestic cat and therefore did not
develop defenses against them.
Not only is it better for wildlife if the cat stays
indoors, it is also much better for your cat. There are
so many dangers that confront free roaming animals:
cars, animal attacks, human cruelty, overpopulation,
disease, parasites, poison and traps. Keeping a cat
happy indoors can be accomplished by doing some or
all of the following: provide a safe outside enclosure
such as a screened porch, provide window shelves
so cats can watch outdoor activities safely, play
with your cat each day (paper bags and cardboard
boxes make great play toys), and plant kitty grass
for grazing. Spaying and neutering will prevent
unwanted litters of kittens.
By keeping cats indoors, you can make it a much
safer environment for our native wildlife to raise their
families.
Outdoor Treats

Keep on giving and sharing with the birds
and critters in your yard by offering yummy
treats. Here is a fun idea for your yard.
Soft Peanut Butter Mix
1 cup shortening
1 cup crunchy peanut butter
3 cups yellow cornmeal
½ cup flour
Sprinkle thistle seeds and dried meal
worms (found at Walmart and Lowes)
Melt shortening
for 1 minute
or less in microwave, add
peanut butter
and stir until
blended. Now
add cornmeal
and flour. As
it thickens you
can add treats
of dried cranberries, raisins,
thistle, dried
meal worms or
shelled peanuts. Cool, then smear on tree
trunks or block into chunks for wire suet
baskets.
I also like to offer apples, peanuts, fresh
water and don’t forget a nice hummingbird
feeder. The mixture for the hummingbirds
is one part sugar to 4 parts of hot water, no
red dye is needed.

June 2014 will be twenty years since I found my special bond with the
Wildlife Sanctuary. The Sanctuary had a terrible fire in May of 1994.
I read about it and knew some of the folks that were helping and
offered my time. That was it…..I was hooked……I found what I didn’t
know I was looking for. I am lucky to have an opportunity to work
with animals and to work with such amazing people every day.
The work here isn’t glamorous but I love it. I love the animals, I love
the mission, and I love the people that help with the animals and the
mission. Some days are better than others just like your own lives. I
consider myself lucky to have found something I find so rewarding. I
often have friends, family…or strangers with huge smiles…..ask “Is it fun”.
Is it fun? Well… I pause to think of a polite answer (funny how parts of my life
flash before me at that moment). Much of what I do is not fun so “no” should be
my reply. Seeing animals every day that are injured or sick isn’t fun. Seeing baby
animals scared and hungry that have been separated from their parents isn’t
fun. Seeing animals too frightened to eat and cry inconsolably isn’t fun. I pause….
because I don’t think “Is it fun?” is really what people mean to ask me. I answer
with a statement. “This is one of the most rewarding, exciting and challenging jobs I
have ever had….I get to learn about all types of animals…and…at the same time try
to have every type of food imaginable for anything that arrives from pelagic birds
to black bear”.
I found this to share: I am a wildlife rehabilitator, I am hard core, I save lives, I
end suffering, I make a difference, I speak for those who have no voice, I “right” the
wrongs that were done to innocent creatures, I do it because I am able.
All of us who work with wildlife rehabilitation share the mission of giving wildlife
a second chance. Our volunteers and contributors share that same wish. Thank you
for supporting the Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida and standing behind us

Don’t Feed the Ducks Bread!
Feeding bread to ducks is like killing them with kindness. It causes
botulism, a cruel and mostly fatal disease, by the bread sinking in the
water, removing oxygen as it breaks down and creating a bacterium which
then infects the ducks. They suffer a very slow and cruel death as they
are paralyzed and unable to swim or fly or eventually breathe.
It contributes to a deformity called “Angel Wing”. It affects the growth
of ducklings due to the complete lack of nutrients in bread. Angel Wing
causes the wings to permanently droop and the duck is unable to fly.
The lack of nutrients impairs a ducks’ immune system. This leaves them more likely to get ill, catch diseases
and be preyed upon. Domestic ducks are attracted to feeding lakes or ponds and then breed with our native
ducks which contributes to overpopulation and therefore less food is available for the wild ducks.
