Davidsonville Wildlife Sanctuary
Davidsonville Wildlife Sanctuary
Fall-Winter 2012
The Sanctuary is manned by volunteers—no employees. Your donations are used to care
for the many animals that need a helping hand, or a permanent home at the sanctuary.
Together we can make a difference!
THE SANCTUARY IS GETTING A FACELIFT!
If you have driven by the sanctuary recently, you may have been startled to see excavating machinery and
mounds of earth instead of the usual geese, ducks, emus, llamas, goats, sheep and other animals. Never fear!
The animals have been temporarily moved to another pasture while the pond area is transformed into a
cascading series of wetlands that will cascade downhill and into a pipe that runs under Beards Point Road. We
are very excited about this new wetland area which will attract and nuture a wide variety of native wildlife. We
would especially like to thank Kirk Mantay and Erik Michelsen of the South River Federation and the
Chesapeake Bay Trust for making this environmental restoration project possible.
The “pond animals” have run-in sheds, a wooded area, an open grass field, and plenty of good food and
fresh water, so they all seem content. The two pygmy goats are doing their part by checking the fence line and
pointing out any spots that need attention!
On behalf of the animals, we would like to thank our donors, whose generosity make it possible to feed and
care for this diverse group of very special wild and not-so-wild animals.
Together We Can Make A Difference!
Dear Friends of Animals,
Bumps and cuts are a part of life, and even more common working on a farm with animals. You clean off the
dirt, apply a little first aid cream, maybe a Bandaid, and get back to work. We all do it. Sandy has been doing
in for many years. No big deal unless the cut gets infected, which happened to Sandy several months ago and
she is still fighting serious complications from the infection. However, despite her health issues, Sandy is still
very much in charge, working with several seasoned, knowledgeable and devoted volunteers to ensure that all
the animals receive proper care. The sanctuary receives an overwhelming number of calls each day, so please
be patient if Sandy does not get back to you as quickly as she has in the past. Thank you for your support.

Sanctuary...
My fears are over... now I am home,
And so my story ends.
Thru these woods & fields I’ll roam,
And live with my new friends.
