Boonville
Located high on the bluffs overlooking the Missouri River just minutes from I-70, Boonville
is rooted in history and the early days of Westward expansion. With more than 450 sites

Blackwater
Blackwater is located 3 miles north of I-70 at exit 89 in Cooper County. Blackwater was
founded in 1887 and named after the Blackwater River that flows nearby. The town served
as a coal and water stop for the Missouri Pacific Railroad traveling between Jefferson City
and Kansas City and boomed during that era. When railroads converted to electric diesel
technology it almost brought an end to the town.
Today, thanks to the determination of some of the residents, old time street lamps line the
streets of the historic railroad town once again. Antique and specialty shops entice visitors
to browse and buy. A windmill stands in the center of the town over the original town well,
reminding you of days gone by. Relaxation can be found in the Bucksnort Saloon (alcohol
free) with its living history cowboy museum. The Telephone Museum has an interesting
display of telephone equipment. The completely renovated Iron Horse Restaurant and
Hotel takes you back in time.
Blackwater hosts an annual Mayfest in the spring and a Fall Festival in October. The summer months bring performances from the Southfork Regulators, an old west re-enactment group performing bank robberies and shootouts on Main Street. October also brings

Sedalia
Sedalia is located about 30 miles south of the Missouri River where U.S. Highway 50 and
U.S. Highway 65 intersect. It has a population of 21,387(2010 census) and serves as the
county seat of Pettis County. The city hosts the Missouri State Fair in August, the Scott
Joplin Ragtime Festival and a pow-wow each year.

Glasgow
Historic Glasgow is located at the junction of Highways 87, 240 and 5 on the Missouri River.
In its early days, Glasgow shipped large quantities of hemp and tobacco from its steamboat
port. Today, it ships corn by rail and river barges.
Glasgow boasts the oldest library in Missouri in its original building. The Lewis Library was
built in 1867. The town has many historic buildings and antebellum homes. Restaurant and
quaint small shops line the streets to attract visitors. Bed and breakfast establishments are
ready for those who want to stay overnight or longer. Glasgow has a winery, bowling alley
and numerous churches.
December in Glasgow brings an Old Tyme Christmas complete with a boat parade.

Tipton
Tipton is located at the junction of Highway 5 and Highway 50 and is almost exactly in the
center of the state. The area has several industrial businesses along with farms and agriculture related businesses. In addition, small shops, restaurants and more call Tipton
home.
Tipton is home to the Maclay Home, one of the oldest structures that remains standing in
the mid-Missouri area. It was built in 1858 as a ladies seminary, but closed at the beginning
of the Civil War. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, being added in 1979. It was
given to the Friends of the Maclay Home, Inc. by the Maclay family in 1983. The organization oversees the restoration and preservation of the historic home. Maclay is open to the
public for tours from 2 to 4 p.m. on the second and fourth Sundays, May through October.
Tours are also conducted during the various local festivities.
One unusual feature in the town of Tipton is the water tower. The tower, painted like eight
ball, originated in 1968 when a Tipton native, Ewald Fisher, opened his pool table factory.
The plant closed in 1976.

Eldon
Eldon is known as the Gateway to the Lake of the Ozarks. Located in Miller County just 15
minutes from the Lake on Highways 52 and 54. It has a population of 4,567 (2010 census).
Eldon offers city parks, an aquatic center, Miller County Fairgrounds, two grocery stores,
two healthcare providers, numerous banks and more than 20 churches among various
other small shops and businesses. The town also has an airport that can accommodate
corporate jets. In September, it is the host to the Annual Turkey Festival.

California is located on Highway 50 in Moniteau County 22 miles west of Jefferson City. It
serves as the county seat. The town boasts several unique and prosperous industries. The
Moniteau County Fair, the oldest continuous fair west of the Mississippi River, is held in August. It includes 4-H and FFA livestock competitions, demolition derby, tractor pull and
more.
California also hosts the Ozark Ham and Turkey Festival on the third Saturday of September each year. The event takes place around the historic county courthouse in downtown.
It features turkey drumsticks and ham sandwiches and includes a BBQ contest, a classic
car and antique tractor show, entertainment, 5K walk/run and a parade.

Versailles
Located at Hwy 5 & 52 Versailles serves as the county seat of Morgan County. The business
district of Versailles is built around a square with the courthouse that houses the government offices. The courthouse is in the National Register of Historic Places. The old Martin
Hotel, located a half-block north of the square, was built by Samuel Martin in 1878 and is
now a museum. Today, the City of Versailles serves as the gateway to the Lake of the
Ozarks area as a unique place where the Prairies Meet the Hills!
An annual event in Versailles is the Olde Tyme Apple Festival with food, entertainment, vendors and more. This year the event will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2013.

Treasure hunting safety tips for the savvy shopper
(MS) --As you search for that perfect treasure, be sure to keep safety in mind.
Second-hand items, especially electronics, building supplies, appliances and
helmets, may carry certain risks if damaged or used. If you are planning on reselling consumer items, check the Consumer Product Safety Commission's
Web site for a guide on things that can and cannot be sold, and for product recalls. CSA Group, a leading certification and testing organization, offers these
safety tips for yard sale shoppers.
Second-hand items
• Avoid electrical or gas products if a label from a recognized certification organization, such as CSA Group, is missing. Look closely at the mark to ensure it
matches the design and colour of certification marks from the same organization on other similar products.
• Check wiring and extension cords for wear and damage. In particular, look for
worn insulation and splices on the cord and loose or exposed parts on the plug.
• Avoid purchasing used bicycle, hockey or construction helmets, as you don't
know their history or what damage may be hidden from plain view.
Counterfeit or illegal goods
• Counterfeiters often use flea markets to peddle fake goods. Packaging on
counterfeits is often poorly designed or has only partial illustrations. Misspellings and unclear printing on products and labels may be another indicator
of a fake product.
• Brand-name companies want you to know whose product you're buying, so
look for a recognized name. Also, look for return addresses or company contact
information on packages.
• Check the "look and feel" of goods. Fake products often seem light and flimsy.

Moberly
Moberly, located in Randolph County, has a population of 13,974 (2010 census). History
shows that Moberly came about as railroads continued west following the Civil War. It was
the junction of the North Missouri Railroad and the Chariton and Randolph railroads. The
town was named after the superintendent of these two railroads. Moberly grew and attracted young immigrants looking for their fortune. The town grew to 1,500 and worked
to become the center of the railroad’s westward expansion. In 1872, the Wabash Railroad
shops were located here. Moberly provided over 800 acres of land with water resources
and coal in order to secure that facility and the town. The population of Moberly exploded
to over 5,000. A writer called it “Moberly, The Magic City” and the phrase caught on.
The Moberly area has several modern motels and dozens of restaurants for every taste.
Hunting and fishing abound in Randolph County with a wide variety of wildlife available
and several lakes for the fisherman. The area also has several parks and a racetrack.

Sturgeon
Sturgeon is located near US-63 and MO-22 in the northwest corner of Boone County. The
town was built in 1856 because of the construction of the North Missouri Railroad and took
its name from Isaac Sturgeon, president and general superintendent of the North Missouri. At one time it was the largest St. Louis-bound shipping point.

Rocheport
The historic village of Rocheport is located about halfway between Columbia, Mo and historic Boonville, Mo. It looks much as it did 140 years ago. The town is home to museums,
gallerys, historic homes, unique shops, restaurants and bed and breakfasts.
Bicyclists and hikers can travel the famous Katy Trail through Rocheport located at the
178.3 mile marker. The trail along this stretch boasts beautiful scenery and the famous
Rocheport Tunnel, the only tunnel on the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad. It was built
in 1982 and was the site of the filming of a scene from Stephen King’s movie “Sometimes
They Come Back”.
