Boonville is the County Seat and largest community. Much of Cooper County is prime agricultural land. It only takes a leisurely stroll on the Katy Trail to see the beauty. The county is scattered with many small businesses, and is alive with history. It is the site of some early Civil War battles along with the first official state fair location. It is also a spot on the Lewis and Clark Trail, and has prospered from being a county adjacent to the Missouri River. We welcome you if you are new to the county, or are looking to relocate here. We think you will find it, as the locals already know, a great place to live, work and play. Boonville is rich in history. Whether driving past historic structures on your way to work or celebrating the town’s heritage at an annual festival, the past will not soon be forgotten. BRIEF HISTORY The town is named for legendary pioneer Daniel Boone who, during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, built a cabin at the Boone’s Lick salt spring near Boonville. Two of his sons, Nathan and Daniel M., made the first salt west of the Mississippi. They floated the salt down the Missouri River to St. Louis. Boone often visited his first cousins, Stephen Cole and Hannah Cole, who also lived in the area. Hannah was the widow of Stevens’s brother and became an important part of Boonville history. Records show that she left the state of Kentucky with her husband and a group of pioneers to find a more suitable place to raise her nine children. While she and her husband travelled, he was killed by Native Americans in the area now known as Hermann, Missouri. The other pioneers tried to persuade Hannah to stay there, but she was determined to find a place well above the flooding river. She crossed the Missouri River to the southside bluff where she built the first Boonville building—a fort to protect her family. Cole later became the first woman in the state to obtain a license to operate a ferry boat between Boonville and Franklin Crossing. Hannah is often referred to as “Boonville’s pioneer woman.” The site where her fort stood was also the site of an early Civil War battle and the site of the first Missouri State Fair. The first plat for the town of Boonville was laid out in 1817 by Asa Morgan, whom Morgan Street is named after, and Charles Lucas. ARTS AND CULTURE The arts are alive and well in Cooper County. There are many ways residents find to express their creativity. There are also many opportunities to observe the artistic endeavors of others in the community. Turner Hall 518 Vine Street Boonville (660) 882-3300 Turner Hall dates back to around 1847 when it was originally built for the First Baptist Church of Jesus Christ. The building was used by a second church before being purchased by the Turn and Gesang Verein Society. They in turn gave the building its current name, Turner Hall. The Turners were an association of German immigrants who were interested in athletics, play reading and society. From 1935 on, the building was used by a variety of local businesses. Today, it has been restored by private owners and is once again being used for banquets and cultural events. The building also serves as headquarters for the Turner Hall River Rats for the Arts, a local arts organization. Thespian Hall 522 Main Street Boonville, MO 65233 (660) 882-7458 Thespian Hall has long been the icon of the Boonville artistic community. With the cornerstone having been laid in 1855, Thespian Hall is the oldest theater still in use west of the Alleghenies. A product of the cooperation of several local organizations, the Classic Greek Revival building was opened in 1857 with a Grand Ball. In the course of its existence, and with a few expansion and renovation projects, the threestory building has served as a library and reading room, playhouse, city hall, Masonic and Odd Fellow lodges, MKT Railroad offices, skating rink, Civil War hospital and barracks, opera house and motion picture theater. In 1975 the building was acquired by the Friends of Historic Boonville through a gift from Kemper Charitable Trusts. The Friends have restored the interior of the building to resemble the ornate appearance of its opera house days. Today the building is used for local festivals, school programs, dance recitals, guest speakers and a number of other activities. It is the location for the Big Muddy Folk Festival and the Missouri River Festival of the Arts. The year 2007 marked the 150th anniversary of Thespian Hall. Morgan Street Park Main and Morgan streets Boonville In recent years, an in effort to bring visual arts into downtown Boonville, Morgan Street Park 5 has been developed to honor some of Boonville’s most prominent citizens. The initiative’s first completed project was a life size statue of a Boonville pioneer woman, Hannah Cole. Created next were busts of worldrenowned journalist Walter Williams, famed painter George Caleb Bingham and nationally recognized African-American educator, James Milton Turner. Busts of the founder of Kemper Military Academy, Frederick T. Kemper and David Barton, U.S. Senator from Missouri from 1821 to 1831, were completed later. West End Theater 301 Doddridge Avenue Blackwater (660) 846-4411 The Old Baptist Church serves as the community theater in Blackwater. The 1905 building features the original church pews & stained glass windows. The troupe consists of many volunteer actors from Blackwater and neighboring towns. Proceeds go to Community projects. HIGH SCHOOL Cooper County has five area high schools located in Boonville, Bunceton, Otterville, Pilot Grove and Prairie Home with some of the best high school sports programs. For several years, Boonville High School has been awarded the position of top school sports program in the conference. With numerous successes in all sports seasons, there is always something exciting happening at BHS. The school year gets a running start with football, girls’ tennis and volleyball in the fall. Athletes begin training and practicing well before school begins in order to develop to their fullest potential. The winter sports, basketball and wrestling, are fewer in number, but maintain a great deal of enthusiasm among fans and students in the community. Finally, the year wraps up with baseball, golf, boys’ tennis and track in the spring. There is always an opportunity for any student to participate in sporting events. In addition to an upstanding tradition, many area athletes have excelled in sports at the collegiate level. YOUTH Most sporting activities for Cooper County youth are offered through the Boonslick Heartland YMCA. The programs are designed to accommodate each child’s skill level and to encourage athletes to become successful on each level. Soccer is still fairly new to the area, but the YMCA provides a soccer program for four different age groups. The volleyball program is designed to teach the basic fundamentals of the sport for grades three through six. Soccer and volleyball are offered both in fall and spring. As for winter sports, the YMCA has a basketball program for young athletes to freshen up their skills and experience different levels of play. The newly-added wrestling program gives area residents ages five through fourteen a chance to develop their skills and participate in tournaments to compete against wrestlers from all over central Missouri. Folkstyle wrestling takes place from November to March, while Greco-Roman/Freestyle wrestling is held from April through July. The YMCA provides youth sports during the summertime as well. The softball program is split into four age divisions, and teams compete against teams from surrounding communities. The instructional league baseball program, designed for six to eight year olds, introduces boys and girls to the sport and helps them expand their skills in the game. The Marlins swim team provides a chance for competitive swimmers to compete year-round. The YMCA even offers swimming lessons for beginners as well. In addition to the YMCA, Boonville Cal Ripken offers the opportunity to play summer baseball. Both Cal Ripken Midget League, ages six to eight, 13 and Cal Ripken Little League, ages nine through twelve, divide players into separate teams and play a league schedule throughout the season. Cal Ripken Little League provides two separate divisions: Minor, ages nine and ten, and Major, ages eleven and twelve. Outdoor exploration. If this appeals to you, you’ll love what Cooper County has to offer. With 225 miles of trail from St. Charles to Clinton, Katy Trail State Park is a great way to see not only Missouri, but Cooper County as well. Whether you and your family wish to bike, hike, or just observe nature—Boonville is the ideal spot. Built in the shadow of the Katy, the former path of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) Railroad, the Katy Trail first became a vision in 1986. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources was able to acquire the land by the National Trails System Act. The Act allowed the government to use the railroad corridors that were no longer needed for transportation and recreation trails. From this, the Katy Trail was born. Pilot Grove Trailhead. RAILROAD MUSEUM Many items displayed in the caboose have been loaned or donated by those that have personal attachment to the MKT Railroad and its importance to the area. The Museum Committee welcomes any that wish to participate in exhibiting items or donating memorabilia. Open Memorial Day to Labor Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Open by request on weekdays the Boonville Area Chamber of Commerce next door. The Trail is covered in crushed limestone providing an ideal surface for walking, jogging and biking. Traveling along the Katy Trail in Cooper County will provide you with spectacular views. The meandering trail takes you among bluffs and along the Missouri River. You could also find yourself in the midst of rolling farmland. With the scenery changing every few minutes you’ll be anything but bored. One trip to the Katy Trail and you’ll be immersed in the wildlife. From the tiniest insects to wild turkey and deer, there will be plenty to observe. Bird watchers will be pleased as they watch chickadees, nuthatches, robins, orioles, woodpeckers, red-tailed hawks and turkey vultures. You might also catch a glimpse of a great blue heron, sandpiper, Canada goose or a belted kingfish. The main Boonville Trailhead is located four blocks off of Main Street on Spring Street. Willing to bike but don’t have the equipment? Don’t worry, there are a number of places in the area that sell and rent bicycles and equipment. However you choose to enjoy the Katy Trail, any trailhead in Cooper County is the perfect place to start. Hop on the trailhead and enjoy local wildlife, history and get ready to make your own adventures.
