Love Notes Opry —
they’ve gone country
BOONVILE–Join the
River Rats for their annual musical valentine
featuring country love
songs, old and new. Love
Notes Opry will be presented Friday, February
14, Saturday, February 15
at 8 p.m. and Sunday, February 16 at 2 p.m. in historic Turner Hall, which is
located at 518 Vine Street.
This year the cast will
be under the musical direction of local folk favorites Cathy Barton and
Dave Para. Cathy appeared on the Grand Ole
Opry years ago with
Grandpa Jones and is delighted to share some of
her country favorites with
the ensemble and the audience. Classic country
love songs by artist such as
the O’Kanes, Johnny
Cash, Randy Travis, Patsy
Kline, Dolly Parton,
Emmy Lou Harris, Garth
Brooks and the Everly
Brothers will be on the
program as well as some
contemporary offerings.
The singers include the
usual cast of characters
and a couple new comers.
The format of the show
will mimic the Grand Old
Opry and one of the hosts
bears a close resemblance
to Minnie Pearl.
Cathy and Dave will be
on stage with their impressive array of instruments and will be joined
by Mike Dulak, another
mid-Missouri professional
musician. You may have
enjoyed some of Mike’s
mandolin, guitar and fiddle playing through the
years in a variety of local
bands such as the Rank
Sinatras, often alongside
another regional favorite
the late Forest Rose. In
1993, Mike opened Big
Muddy Mandolins now
based in Rocheport. Mike
is the main craftsman of
the instruments and says
the look isn’t the most important thing in an instrument. It’s the sound that
matters. According to the
testimonials on his website,

mandolins sound powerful and sweet and only get
better as they age.
The Love Notes Opry
band will be rounded out
by Kathy Howard on keyboard, David Oswald on
bass and Donnie Lee
Romine on drums. The
evening is sure to be one
of great music and entertainment, and if you are so

Alex and Dawn Hodschayan of Washington, Mo. were united in marriage on December
31, 2013 at the Historic Old Post Office in downtown St. Louis. A reception was held at
The Thaxton Building & Speakeasy.
Parents of the bride are Dean and Anita Sherrill. Grandparents are Ruby Weathers and
Mary Weathers, both of Boonville, the late Louis Weathers of Boonville and David and
Arlene Sherrill of Rolla.
The grooms parents are Pete and Nancy Hodschayan of Manchester, MO. Grandparents
are the late Alexander and Maria Hodschayan of St. Louis and Irene and the late John
Hurst of St. Louis.
The bride graduated with Summa Cum Laude honors in 2009 from Stephens College.
She received a Bachelor of Arts in Human Development and Child Study with minors
in Music and Psychology and Master of Education in Counseling in 2011. She is currently employed as a counselor at Hermann High School in Hermann, Mo.
The groom received a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with minors in Film and English from University of Missouri-Columbia. He is employed as an event coordinator for
downtown Downtown Washington, Inc. in Washington, Mo.
The couple enjoyed a honeymoon cruise to Nassau, Bahamas and due to the snow, an
extended stay in Orlando for Disney World and Universal Studios.

Arrow Rock Lyceumto hold local auditions
Local auditions will be
held at the Arrow Rock
Lyceum Theatre Saturday,
March 8 and 9 from 10 a.m.
to 5 p.m. If necessary, additional times will be added.
Appointments for these auditions can be made by
emailing a picture and resume

there are specific roles for
which you would like to be

Each person auditioning
should prepare 16 bars of
two contrasting songs and
one brief monologue. An accompanist will be provided.
Children under the age of 10
may audition with 16 bars of
one song and no monologue
if they are only interested in
ensemble positions. Anyone
who is not a singer may perform a monologue only. The
Lyceum is seeking equity
and non-equity actors of all
ages and ethnicities.
There are several casting
opportunities for young people this season.
In The King and I, the
Lyceum is seeking confident
young local singer/dancers
ages 4-14 to play the
King’s royal children.
Though all ethnicities will
be considered, Asian-American children are preferred.

How to temper chocolate for a Valentine's treat
What would Valentine's
Day be without chocolate?
Candy and chocolate are
often exchanged come Valentine's Day. Though storebought confections might be
popular, such gifts can easily
be made at home as well.
Chocolate satisfies a sweet
tooth, and some researchers
believe chocolate is an aphrodisiac. In the 1980s, doctors
at New York State Psychiatric Institute explored the
possibility that chocolate
could be an aphrodisiac.
When someone is in love, his
or her brain produces a chemical called phenylethylamine,
or PEA, which acts a lot like
an amphetamine, triggering
the hormones norepinephrine
and dopamine to create feelings of euphoria. Considering
chocolate naturally contains
PEA, there is reason to believe that chocolate could
also trigger feelings of happiness and love. However,
other chemicals might be be-
hind these feelings of euphoria.
Whether this is the case or
not, chocolate will long remain a romantic gift, especially on Valentine's Day.
Dipped pastries, lollipops and
chocolate-covered berries are
savory treats that can be
whipped up rather easily in
the average kitchen. Simply
melting chocolate and pouring it over dessert is one way
to go, but to create the shiny,
firm finish that professionals
achieve requires tempering
chocolate.
The act of tempering
chocolate causes the cocoa
butter to break down and suspend evenly in the chocolate.
This also alleviates the white
"bloom" that appears on
chocolate when it's exposed
to temperature changes.
Properly tempered chocolate
will be smooth and shiny.
It is possible to temper
chocolate at home with a few
tools. You will need a food
thermometer to measure the
temperature. Some people
prefer to melt chocolate over
a double-boiler, which is essentially a bowl with the
chocolate resting over a pot
of gently boiling water. Using
the microwave is another
way to melt the chocolate.
Melt small pieces of chocolate at 10- to 15-second intervals until it is melted, stirring
after each time. Dark chocolate needs to reach a temperature of between 114 F and
120 F. Milk and white chocolate need to reach a temperature between 105 F and 113
F.
Next the chocolate needs
to be cooled. You can do so
by adding more pieces of
chocolate and stirring to incorporate them. This is called
"seeding." Continue stirring
and measure the working
temperature. Dark chocolate
needs to lower to a temperature of between 90 F and 86
F. Milk and white chocolate
need to reach a temperature
between 85 F and 81 F. After
it has cooled, bring the temperature back up to around 86
degrees and stir again. Test
some of the chocolate with a
small piece of parchment
paper. Let it sit on the paper
for about 2 minutes. If the
chocolate sets up firmly and
looks glossy, it has been
properly tempered. If not,
add more chocolate and repeat the process again until it
is tempered correctly.
Make sure that no droplets
of water come in contact with
the chocolate; otherwise it
might seize up and not temper properly. Also, start with
a good-quality chocolate that
is chopped into small pieces
so it will melt more easily.
Chocolate makers sell small
pieces of chocolate known as
pistoles, callets or wafers.
Once the chocolate is tempered, be sure to keep it at a
consistent temperature of
around 100 F to 90 F until
you are done working with it.
Chocolate is savory, decadent and a prized gift for
Valentine's Day. Properly
tempered chocolate is something anyone can do at home.

Believed to boost the libido, aphrodisiacs were enjoyed by Cleopatra and
Casanova, and they were
commonly used among ancient Greeks.
Aphrodisiacs are agents
that work on the mind and
body to increase sexual de-
sire and arousal. Foods affect the body in different
ways and can have a positive impact on how a person feels. Certain foods can
help promote feelings of
intimacy, increase blood
flow and create euphoria.
With Valentine's Day
upon us once again, here
are some purported aphrodisiacs that can be incorporated into special dinners
with a sweetheart.
Almonds: This nut
has been regarded as a fertility symbol through the
years. While it has been
said almond aroma can incite passion, there is no
concrete proof. Still, almonds are a good source of
essential fatty acids and
important B vitamins that
can help prevent coronary
artery disease.
Asparagus: This vegetable may inspire lust in
men and women, but it also
is a good source of various
vitamins. Asparagus is a
member of the lily family
that is nutrient-dense, containing folic acid, potassium, fiber, vitamin B6,
and thiamin.
Avocados: This fruit
has a shape that could put
people in the mood. In fact,
centuries ago Catholic
priests from Spain who visited Mexico found commonly grown avocados to
be obscene and prohibited
their consumption.
Bananas: Potassium
is a key nutrient for muscle
strength. Muscle contractions will be more intense
and the body will have
greater endurance after
consuming bananas.
Chocolate: Chocolate
and romance have often
gone hand-in-hand. Chocolate contains the chemical

Figs: This sweet fruit
has been revered as an

of years. In many cultures,
figs are considered to be a

peppers and others that
contain capsaicin help to
increase circulation and
stimulate nerve endings. A
spicy meal may lead to a

However, not every person
finds seafood palatable.
Oysters are high in zinc,
the mineral known to increase libido. Therefore, it
stands to reason that other
foods high in zinc might be
just as effective at inspiring
romantic notions.
Pomegranates: This
fruit owes its power to the
antioxidants within. Antioxidants help protect the
lining of blood vessels, allowing more blood to flow
through and increasing sensitivity around the body.
Salmon: This pink
fish is packed with omega3 fatty acids that aid in the
production of key hormones in the body, including
