We have come to the end of a

full of exciting challenges for
all members of our
community. We have certainly
been a very busy place and our

their learning this term.
There have been many Special

There have been all sorts of
exciting teaching and learning

using PAT and STAR tests and
results are now being used by
teachers to inform teaching

included the Shelia Winn

powerful “Drink Drive”
presentation.
Enjoy reading about some of
these events in this newsletter.
None of this could have
happened without the
dedication and good will of our
talented staff. They continue to
go above and beyond to ensure
an enriching experience for
each student at Sacred Heart
Girls’ College. It has certainly
been a privilege to lead such a
team for the last 5 weeks. It is
now time for a small rest. Take
the time to refresh and renew
so that we can enjoy Term 2.

Acting Principal
FAREWELL TO WENDY MULLIGAN
It is with sadness that we farewell Wendy Mulligan from our staff at the end of the
term. Wendy joined our staff in 2005 as a Year 7 Homeroom Teacher. She has taken on
a number of roles at SHGC during her time with us including Literacy Co-ordinator,
Year 7 Dean, Special Needs Co-ordinator and Director of Religious Studies. She has
made a huge impact on our school and her input will be missed very much. We wish
her well on her new adventure in the United Kingdom and she leaves with our love.
God Bless Wendy.

Sunday 14th April 11am to 2pm. Wow, what a day!
The culmination of many hours work from a dedicated team of parents on our PTFA resulted
in a very enjoyable Gala. Our first in 5 years. Our prayers were answered with a beautiful day
free from rain. The smiles on people’s faces showed that they were enjoying the day and it
was great to see so many people there. We raised a grand total of $21,178.50 which will go
toward learning resources for the school.
We could not have had such a successful day without the hard work of our PTFA. Particular

Mrs Denise Stachurski
Returning Officer
On Sunday the 7th of April, the Sacred Heart Girls’ College Leadership Team was fortunate enough to travel down
to Wellington to attend the ‘National Young Leaders Day’ conference.
We were divided into three teams and each team had to complete an ‘Amazing Race Sacred Heart style’ which
provided much entertainment in the van rides to Wellington and home again!
Monday was the leadership conference where we joined up with 750 other students from around New Zealand to
listen to five very inspirational speakers. They were all from different walks of life with their own motivating and
thought provoking stories to share. Although the conference was five hours long, the gripping stories that were
told made the time fly by. It will be a memorable experience for all of us who attended and we look forward to
implementing our new knowledge and motivation into the college and our lives.
A special thank to Mr Murray who organised the successful trip and Mrs McSweeney and Mrs Manning for making
the trip possible by driving two of he vans.

Lord God,
At the rising of
your sun each
morning,
Let the
greatest of all
lights
Your love
Rise like the
sun
Within my
heart
Amen
Many people have said to me that with the
appointment of Pope Francis they have
noticed a change in the attitudes of many
Catholics. I know in my own Religious
Questions team and Religious Studies classes
we have discussed this. People are saying he
has challenged many norms and has been far
more ‘real’ in his involvement with the
common man. Some—and not all of these
were necessarily Church going people—also
commented to me that there seemed to be a
lot more people attending the various Easter
ceremonies this year. It may be that Pope
Francis’ approach to being Pope is giving
people confidence again in the Church.
A reminder that if you could please contact
the school before 8.30am when your
daughter cannot be at school. Expect to be
contacted by Bernadette Holdom (our
Attendance Officer) if your daughter has not
attended Period 1 and we have not received
notification.
While there is still much healing and soul
searching for many Catholics, to see people
during Easter break feel this confidence in
their Church, inspired perhaps by the
appointment of Pope Francis, gives hope that
the Church is looking to being renewed.
Next term is the term for winter ailments
colds and flu. Please talk with your daughter
about good hygiene practices and the need
to wash hands often and to cover coughs and
sneezes with a tissue. If your daughter is ill,
please keep her at home so that the illness is
not spread to others. Please ring the school
to let us know that she is ill. Senior students
may be required to get a medical certificate if
internal NCEA assessments are missed. A
reminder if your daughter is going to be
absent she needs to fill in a planned absence
form.
During the Easter break, I do hope you had
the opportunity to ask your daughter about
the Easter Liturgies held at the College. These
liturgies contained material that would have
challenged them and then caused them to
reflect deeply within their hearts on Christian
values such as loyalty, acceptance, nurture,
joy, truth, healing, dignity, service and life.
A question parents could ask their daughters
is: ‘What do you remember most from the
Easter liturgies held at Sacred Heart Girls’
College?’
Attendance
It is positive to see you ensuring your
daughter attends school every day. Irregular
attendance can damage your daughter‘s
learning. Ensuring that your daughter attends
school every day is the simplest way of
supporting her learning and her achievement.
Irregular attendance is also one of the first
indications that something is not right. It may
even signal that there is a greater pastoral
issue.
Hope

Acceptance
We do not allow our students to leave the
school grounds without signing out at the
school office. In order to sign out they will
need a dated and signed note from their
caregiver. This is to ensure your daughter‘s
safety while at school. We appreciate your
co-operation in this matter.

Thank you for your continuing support helping to ensure that your daughter wears the correct school uniform. A
few useful points to consider are:

Winter uniform may be worn from the beginning of Term 2. Winter uniform must be worn after Queen‘s
birthday weekend (7th June).

Winter uniform consists of black tights (or white socks) and shoes. The rest of the uniform remains the same.

Sensible school shoes and sandals must be worn. Ballerina shoes and canvas shoes are not sensible school
shoes as they do not adequately protect from wet weather. Look for a sensible sole and a sturdy
construction. The definition ―must be polishable—might help you to choose wisely. If in doubt, please ask.

There are a lot of lost school jerseys waiting in the school office to be claimed. Please ensure that your
uniform items are named so that they can be returned promptly.

All uniform items are available from Campus Clothing on Gill Street. They are open during normal working
hours. They stock very reasonably priced white socks and black stockings. Hoodies are not part of the school
uniform and cannot be worn at any time. Cardigans are not part of the school uniform.

Your daughter may wear a jacket to and from school to protect her from wind and rain. We do not have a
school jacket/coat so your discretion is appreciated.

Facial piercings (other than one in the ear lobe) are not permitted. A plaster over the piercing is not
acceptable.

Nail polish and make-up must not be obvious. Students will be asked to remove this if it is.
On Wednesday 3rd April the annual Sacred Heart and Francis Douglas Airbands was held. Yet again, this event
proved to be an amazing night with both schools bringing their top talent to the stage. Eventually it was Sacred
Heart who took out the title (for the third year in a row) with the act from a group of Year 12’s – Maoriora. The
evening raised $3159.62. A big thank you to Mrs Leger, Mrs O’Sullivan, Ms McSweeney and Mr Mills for being our
judges for the night. A big thank you to all the girls who helped organize such a successful night.

School News
On the 28th of March a 19 year old from Auckland, Brando Yelavich, came to speak to the Year 11 students about
his journey around the coast of New Zealand.
Brando was inspired by the movie ‘Into the Wild’. He
started his journey after five years of planning on the
1st of February 2013, in Cape Reinga. Brando was
planning to finish after 6 months, but now he plans to
be back before his 21st birthday.
One of his aims is to raise money for the Ronald
McDonald House charity and he has almost raised
$2,000 dollars. Brando believes that you don’t have to
achieve high academically to fulfill your dreams.
Brando’s Dyslexia and ADHD stopped him from passing
NCEA Level One and Two, then he dropped out of
school when he was Year 12 as it was too difficult for
him with his dyslexia struggles. This was when he had
his first dream of being the first New Zealander to walk
around the coast of New Zealand.
Brando hoped to inspire us to make our dreams a
reality like he has done.
By Sarah McKie, Emily Goodley, Meyer Neeson and Emma Daniels.
On the 6th of March, a van full of Year 12 students
alighted at FDMC, ready for a day of learning about
the work of Caritas, a Catholic aid and social justice
agency.
One of the highlights of the day was the session
about the distribution of wealth in the world. Three
out of the thirty students were given large slices of
chocolate cake, while the rest received a single
cracker.
This day was eye opening and has helped me to
understand the workings of Catholic social agencies.

9R Social Studies Trip … a class trip close to Waitangi Day, to consider local Maori history and make links to taha
Maori for our Marae visit.
Here are three students reflections:
“On Friday February 8, 9R Social Studies class walked to the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge in Fitzroy. The Te Rewa Rewa
bridge crosses the river next to a pa site. The bridge is the shape of a wave as well as whale’s bones. This
symbolises the connection between the iwi and the sea. We are not allowed to walk on the pa site as it is fragile
and sacred.”
“I found this walk both educational and fun. It was educational because we talked about the old houses where
pakeha people lived, what the Fitzroy Pole means, and about the pa site by the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge. The fun part
was learning, going on the walk with friends and having a good time. I had never been to the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge
before so it was a good sight-seeing thing. I really enjoyed it, thanks to Mrs Burge and helpers.”
“I found it fun and interesting finding out information I never knew before. I went with my class, 9R, to the Te
Rewa Rewa Bridge and I’ve only been there once before. I learnt lots of new things about Taranaki Tribal Battles
and about why the bridge was made the way it was. I enjoyed the walk because we got to spend time outdoors
instead of in a classroom.”

SHGC Music Department
This is, as usual, a very busy and noisy place! Apart from classes, we have the Tenners, Trebles, Concert
Band and Jazz Bands all well into rehearsals. Several singers and songwriters have already sent entries
into various competitions, and there are a variety of concerts coming up over the next Term. This year
there have been changes to how the Smokefree Rockquest is judged and we have at least 5 groups
working towards submitting an entry! Our Year 7 & 8 Rockband is also getting underway, plus groups for
the Chamber Music competition are practicing! Our Ukulele and keyboard groups are making good
progress, and rehearsals for the 2013 production have launched. It is great having Carly Avery on board in
the Music Department, teaching the Ukuleles and helping with the production.
‘Strike!’ Percussion visit to SHGC
On Tuesday 19th February we were privileged to have the international percussion group ‘Strike’
performing at school. They are based in Wellington and regularly perform their unique style of music
throughout New Zealand and overseas.
They held a workshop for 10 of our drum and percussion students, then performed for all the Year 7 – 10
students. It was an energetic performance, that included a variety of musical styles. It was interesting to
hear that they all hold a Degree in Drumming or Percussion, and practice for around 8 hours a day!
Bryony Williams: New Update!
Since the last newsletter Bryony has been very busy. She has won the ‘Joyce and Michael Kennedy Award
for the Singing of Strauss’ in Manchester. This earned her a further £5000 towards her studies. She then
made the finals of the ‘Frederick Cox Singing Competition’ at the RNCM, and went on to win. A huge
achievement. Congratulations Bryony!

Congratulations to Maria Mosquera!
Maria has been taking singing lessons since she was 12. She has regularly been doing singing exams and
always passes with high marks. In Year 10 Maria won the ‘audience appeal’ award at the SHGC / FDMC
Talent Quest.
Earlier this year, Maria was awarded the top singing award by the Registered Music Teachers of Taranaki.
This is presented annually and is a great achievement. She will be presented with this award at a concert
to be held on the 14th of April. As part of this concert Maria will be singing, accompanied by the Taranaki
Youth Orchestra.
Tenners 2013—Workshop with David
Squires
On the 5th of April (Teacher Only Day) the
Tenners were privileged to have David
Squires come to SHGC and lead a
workshop. David works with several choirs,
including Westlake Boys, and the National
Youth Choir of NZ. He spent an hour and a
half working on a variety of aspects of
singing together in a choir. There was a lot
of laughter as the girls all became Sumo
wrestlers, Beyonce, and Italian pizza lovers!
It was a very beneficial time which no-one
will forget in a hurry.
Singing with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra
Congratulations to Estella Winnie-McGee and Maria Mosquera who both made the Short List (Top 10) of
a recent singing competition in Auckland. They both had to submit a video of themselves singing a version
of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ plus another song of their choice, from the Musical Theatre or Jazz
genres. Well Done!

Congratulations to Bohen Pescini for being selected for the Central Region U15 mixed touch team to compete in
the national touch tournament.
Taranaki was represented by 4 secondary schools at the recent NZ Senior Secondary Schools
Volleyball National Championships held in Palmerston North in the middle of March. NPGHS;
NPBHS; SHGC and Spotswood College Girls & Boys were all represented, each playing in different divisions due to
National rankings. In total there were 62 boys teams and 84 girls teams that entered this tournament.
It was only the second time we have sent a team and the girls performed exceptionally well. It was a tiring week
where the girls had 2 games a day as well as duty to perform. Overall SHGC won 3 games during the tournament
and finished a very credible 15th in Division 5.
Each year Sport Taranaki offers a sports mentoring programme to ten selected athletes from within
the region. This year three of our girls were selected for this programme: Emma Daniels (Triathlon),
Sarah Wilson (Kayaking), and Morgan Haakma (Wakeboarding). Congratulations, you all deserve the
selection as you have recently achieved some wonderful results.
We had two students enter these events which were held in Christchurch on 21/22 March.
Emma Daniels placed 6th in the U16 age group for Triathlon
Natalie Walsh placed 12th in the U14 age group for the open water swim.
Congratulations to Anna McLean, Holly Pearson-Neiderberger and Annika Roodbeen who have been
selected for the Taranaki U18 Hockey Team.

Science Roadshow
In March all Year 7 and Year 10 students visited the Fonterra Science Roadshow. The Roadshow is an exciting and
entertaining learning programme of live demonstrations and hands-on exhibits that broaden students’ knowledge
of science and technology and the world around them. This year the theme was pressure and the scientific pantry.

Rocky Shore study
The weather held (just!) for the
Y12 Biology students annual
visit to the Kawaroa rock pools.
The visit supported the internal
assessment “investigate a
pattern in an ecological
community” and the girls were
able to collect their own
primary data for further
analysis.

On March 25th the Year 12 Geography girls
set off to Egmont National Park collect
primary research data on the impact of
altitude on the spatial variation of
vegetation, soil and climate on Mt
Taranaki. The first stop for the bus was the
Potaema swamp, where the girls descended
from the bus ready to wield their
thermometers and clinometers. After a
valiant attempt to collect data in the first
rain of the drought , we were back on the
bus up to the Mountain House for a ‘wee’
snack before setting off on the Waingongoro
Track. With many finding the swing bridge a
challenge, lunch was a well-deserved rest break at the hut. Bellies full, we set off to tramp up to the Stratford
Plateau, getting a first-hand impression of just how steep the relief of East Egmont National Park truly is! The
second set of data collection was a much drier experience on the Manganui ski field, then everyone retired inside
for dinner and data collation. Day Two, saw a beautiful sunrise, and a little stroll across to the North Taranaki
Visitors Centre, where the girls rounded off their research with some of the informative displays. Thank you to Mr
Browne and Mrs McFetridge for helping to chaperone.

On Saturday 30th March, Sacred Heart entered the first team ever into the Rotorangi Gutbuster
which consisted of a 14km kayak, 12km cross-country run and a 46km road cycle.
Sarah Wilson, Jess Leary and myself were all very keen to make our mark on the event and Sarah gave us a good
start by being the first secondary schools contestant in with a legendary paddle time of 1:28:26. Jess was tagged
and pounded out an astonishing run with a time of 58:25 and soon I was off on the bike leg and with the
encouragement from the team and parents along the way, I finished with the time of 1:26:11.
Our overall team time was 3:53:02, leaving us finishing 3rd overall in the secondary schools division.
However we placed 1st in the secondary school girls’ category, snatching the trophy off New Plymouth Girls’ High
School which has been in their possession for years. We also had the fastest time for open women’s so it was a
very successful day and we look forward to competing in more multi-sports events around the country this year!

CORE EDUCATION ROADSHOW
On Friday 5th April there was a Teacher Only Day. SHGC was the host to
CORE Education’s Roadshow . Educators from around the region came to
SHGC to engage with and listen to, nationally acclaimed speakers on
e-learning and leadership.
Delegates commented on the warm and welcoming hospitality showed by the community of SHGC. Young people
are now referred to as “Digital Natives” and we are excited to think about ways that technology can help to enrich
and extend learning. We were reminded that we can choose to be scared about the use of technology or we can
embrace it in new and unknown ways.
A quick and interesting weblink can be viewed at:
http://atthevirtualchalkface.wordpress.com/2013/04/15/the-kids-are-all-right/ it reinforces that our “kids are
alright” and do not deserve the negative voice often heard in our media.
