The Sacrament of Baptism Baptismal Preparation sessions are held on the second Sunday of each month for first-time parents. Baptisms are held the first, second, third and fourth Sunday of each month, or by special request at the 4:30 p.m. and 12:00 noon Masses. Baptisms are not held during the Lenten season. Reservations for both must be made at the Parish Center Office. 419-885-5791 The Sacrament of Marriage All arrangements are to be made with the Parish Center Office at least six months in advance. All must attend a Marriage Preparation Course. 419-885-5791 The Sacrament of the Sick Please contact the Parish Office regarding visitation by a Parish Minister for Communion calls to the homebound, hospital visitation or the Sacrament of the Sick. 419-885-5791 A “Special Welcome” to any guest who may be visiting. We are happy you are here to celebrate with us. Welcome to our Parish Community! May your visit be blessed! THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST A Message from the Pastor… Another successful Festirama is behind us! On behalf of the entire parish, I want to thank all who worked so hard – not only last weekend, but in the weeks and months leading up to Festirama. It certainly warms the pastor’s heart to see literally hundreds of people working together at this event. I have always said that for me the most important part of a Parish Festival is not the money raised (although that is very welcomed and important!), but the community-building that takes place during the weekend. Old friendships are renewed and new ones made, as people work side by side to make this such a great event. MAY 29, 2016 Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Ushers and Greeters are needed for Saturday and Sunday Masses – Please consider becoming a Liturgical Minister for one of our weekend Masses by serving as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, or Hospitality Minister (Usher or Greeter). Prior experience is not necessary, and training will be provided at a time that will work with your schedule. Contact Joanne Denyer at 419-885-5791 or jdenyer@ stjoesylvania.org for information. We need Liturgical Ministers for all Masses! One man commented to me on how well organized everything seemed to be, and I pointed out to him that that doesn’t just happen. It is the result of months of discussing and planning by the Chairman and the outstanding Committee who drive Festirama. The wristband and $5.00 admission fee for nonparishioners on Friday and Saturday seemed to work well in helping us to control the huge crowds on those nights. It is a sad commentary on the state of our society that such measures are necessary, but we want to make everyone feel safe while they are here enjoying Festirama, and I think that happened last weekend. Annual Volunteer Appreciation Cookout +++++ Monday, June 13 On this weekend, we specially remember all those who gave their lives in service to our country while serving in the armed forces. Please remember to say a prayer for these heroes who have made our freedom possible. There will be Mass here in church at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, followed by the Sylvania Memorial Day Parade, which will begin on our property heading north on Main Street. I will not be here for the Mass and parade, as I am going to Bethlehem after Masses here on Sunday morning. All of my four sisters will be there (a rarity, as they live further afield than we four brothers), so the brothers are invading, as well. Have a blessed week, our final week of school. Msgr. Dennis Metzger Thank you, Bulletin Sponsors Save the Date Vespers at 6:00 p.m., in the church 6:45 p.m. – Cookout E. Campus Family Center Calling all adult parishioners (21 years of age and older) who have shared their time and talent in the past year! Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Ushers, Greeters, Choir, Outreach Ministries and Festirama Volunteers, you know who you are! Join us for an evening of prayer, food and fellowship. R.S.V.P. to the Parish Center at 419-885-5791 or email Kim Koesters at [email protected] by June 3. Hope to see you there! ST. JOSEPH PARISH SYLVANIA, OHIO Year of Mercy Spiritual Work of Mercy – Instruct the Ignorant To even mention this spiritual work of mercy can imply a pretentiousness – that we are in possession of some truth that others lack. And often, this instruction is not welcomed information! We can better understand this Work of Mercy by considering five keys to instructing the ignorant, if we are to be effective in this work. First, we must recognize our own ignorance before the divine teacher. This humility is both intellectual and moral – in order to educate another on divine truth, there should be an even greater effort on our part to follow God’s laws. As Pope Paul VI declared in 1975, people listen “more willingly to witnesses than to teachers.” None of us is morally perfect, but living by example and being humble with our own shortcomings, allows us to be witnesses of love and faith. Other considerations are method and motive. We are not called to chide and berate anyone because of what we think they are lacking. Prudence has to dictate the way in which we approach instructing the ignorant. Even St. Thomas Aquinas suggested that there may be times that we forego instruction if we consider it probable that our intervention would make matters worse. Motive is an important factor – as we must ask ourselves if we are trying to display our superior intelligence or exercise power over someone else. The purest motive is the desire to proclaim the love of God with those we meet because we want them to share in that love with us. The last key is that we may face rejection in our effort to instruct the ignorant. As Jesus said, “If they rejected me, they will reject you.” In a world marred by sin and spiritual blindness, we should accept this likelihood with humility and hope – and not a spirit of despair. So humility, morality, method, motive and hope are the keys to instructing the ignorant. We are called to be humble in our claims, moral in our lives, charitable in our methods and motives, and hopeful – always trusting in God’s plan. Corporal Work of Mercy – Clothe the Naked Some ways of carrying out this Work of Mercy: • Donate new or gently used clothes, winter coats, scarves, hats and other apparel to our Helping Hands of St. Louis Clothing Center (contact Paul Cook at 419-691-0613). • Donate cold-weather attire to HOPE Food Pantry in Mansfield (contact Rebecca Owens at 419-524-0733). • Volunteer to work at a Clothing Drive or at a shelter, where clothing is distributed to those in need. • Support the work of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. • Participate in programs that provide towels and linens for hospitals in distressed areas. Today and Beyond An Ecumenical Bereavement Support Group When we lose a loved one by death, we are wounded. Just as a wound does, we need to heal from within, to express our thoughts and feelings, even when they seem crazy. We need to recognize that “crazy is normal.” The group meets the second Tuesday of each month, from 6:308:00 p.m., at Christ the King Church, the Parish Center Meeting Room. We welcome people from all walks of life. Contact St. Joseph Representative, Ed Ruszkiewicz, with any questions at 419-882-1688. 5th Sunday Rosary The Knights of Columbus will begin saying the Rosary after the 12:00 noon Mass on the 5th Sunday. The Rosary will be prayed on Sunday, May 29 about 1:15 p.m., in the church. The recitation of the Rosary is open to anyone and we encourage you to join us. Deb’s Ministry of Prayer and Hope Start the summer with us! Gather for support, prayer and hear about hope with Deb’s Ministry of Prayer and Hope, the former St. Joseph-Deb Buchman Cancer Support and Ecumenical Prayer Group. We meet Thursday, June 2, at 6:00 p.m., in the East Campus School Meeting Room 1. All family members, caregivers, spouses and friends are welcome. We deal with all health concerns. Should you have any questions, please contact Sue Cutshall at 419-340-2025 or Clyde Duncan at 419-754-4195. Thank you very much! Care Notes Care Notes help with whatever is going on in your life or a loved one’s life – sickness, death of a loved one, aging, stress, fitting prayer in your life, faith, marriage, etc. Look in the rear vestibule for the wall-mounted rack of CareNotes. THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST MAY 29, 2016 Uniform Exchange! The annual SJS School Uniform Exchange will take place on June 1, from 8:00-10:00 a.m., and from 5:00-7:00 p.m., on the west campus. Buddy Bench Dedication – On June 1, our new “Buddy Bench” will be dedicated on the west campus playground in memory of Ms. Terrie Raymond, a former Teacher and Assistant Principal at St. Joseph School. Ms. Raymond was an influential part of SJS for nearly 40 years! All who knew Terrie are welcome to attend the ceremony at 9:00 a.m., in the parking lot behind the preschool. Testimonial: “Our decision to enroll our children at St. Joseph School was based on a number of factors, one of the most important being the high level of parent involvement both in and out of the classroom. As an educator, I knew the value of parent involvement in a school’s success. As a mother, I knew how much more connected I feel to my children’s education and development when I am able to witness it firsthand.” SERVICE HOURS NEEDED? Service Hours are available for High School Students and/or Confirmation Candidates at St. Joseph School. You will be asked to assist in unpacking and delivering textbooks to classrooms. There is flexible scheduling to offer you as much, or as little time, as you may have to give. JOSEPH PARISH SYLVANIA, OHIO Blest Art will be visiting your parish on behalf of the Christian families in Bethlehem, Palestine. Our mission is to support those families in the Holy Land. For centuries, the Christians in and around Bethlehem have earned a living by carving religious olive wood art to sell to visiting pilgrims. Fewer pilgrims are journeying to the Holy Land today, making it difficult for those Christians to support their families. As a result, there has been a dramatic rise in Christian emigration from the Holy Land. Now, less than 1% of the population in the Holy Land is Christian. When Blest Art visits your parish, we will have hand-carved nativity sets, statues, crosses, rosaries, and many other pieces of beautiful olive wood art. We kindly invite you to visit our display and to consider purchasing a piece of art from the Holy Land. In doing so, you will help support the many families who depend on this form or art for their living. Your purchase will make a difference in the lives of many Christian families. We gladly accept cash, checks, and all major credit cards. Please note that we do not ask for, nor do we accept, any donations. Thank you in advance for your purchase when we come to visit. Please visit our display at your parish, Saturday and Sunday, June 18th and June 19th, 2016, after each Mass. If you will be out of town the weekend we visit your parish, please stop by our web site at www.BlestArt.org. You can order beautiful carvings to be shipped to your home.
