Welcome
We are immensely proud to celebrate our 30th birthday in 2012.
Throughout its lifetime the Hawk’s Well Theatre has played an
important and leading role in the cultural and artistic life of the region.
It is fair to say the theatre has firmly established itself as part of the
fabric of Sligo, as a gateway to the performing arts for the people of
Sligo and beyond, and also as a vibrant resource for local community
artists.
To mark the momentous birthday we are planning an exciting program
of events throughout the year to celebrate the relationships the theatre
has nurtured throughout its life. Our celebrations will honour the core
local groups who have performed at the theatre since its birth as well
as present the very best of professional artists.
Happy Birthday to us,

Coolera Dramatic Society are delighted to announce that due to
huge demand, their acclaimed production of Myra’s Story, will
return to the Hawk’s Well Theatre for one night only. Directed by
Bobby Jones, this Brian Foster play stars Mary McDonnell in a
performance of incredible depth which chronicles the highs and
infinite lows of Dublin woman, Myra McLoughlin. Motherless from a
young age, and living with a father who clings increasingly to the
dubious solace provided by drink, Myra sees marriage as her only
way out of a bleak future which already seems pre-destined. Along
comes Tommy McLoughlin, and together they dream of a future
happiness which will transcend their environment.

Joyce in Story and Song
Special Double Bill Performance
Fri 13 Jan, 8pm
¤15/12conc.
¤10
On the 70th anniversary of the death of James Joyce we present
this special double bill performance.
Joyced!
Book online: www.hawkswell.com
By Donal O'Kelly. Performed by Katie O'Kelly.
Directed by Sorcha Fox
A Whirlwind Love Affair, Gunfire, Music, Rejection, Flight, Boater
Hats...James Joyce like you've never seen him before.
Joyced! looks back at 1904 through the eyes of JoJo, a stallholder in
Dublin's Rathmines Market, with a dangerous obsession for all things
Joycean. JoJo careers like a person possessed through the full gamut of
1904 James Joyce:
• his battles with his mad dad
• his bronze medal win for singing in the Feis
• a crazed night of gunfire in the Sandycove Tower
• his rescue from Monto mayhem by the man who became Bloom
• and his passion for Nora Barnacle and their fabled walk on 16th June
It is a chaotic, whirlwind odyssey through the people, events and year
that would later become infamous in Ulysses
Songs of Joyce
Songs of Joyce is a musical extravaganza
of songs drawn from the life and works of
James Joyce. Sinead Murphy and Sligo
native Darina Gallagher bring their earthy
brand of harmonies to some of the bestloved songs of the early 20th century from bawdy street ballads and sea
shanties to music hall hits and folksongs.
This delightful production has toured to
critical acclaim throughout Ireland and
internationally to the UK, USA and Russia.

These three traditional musicians have built a formidable musical
relationship since 2001. Individually recognised figureheads of the
tradition, they have built solid reputations as master musicians with
astounding skill, diversity and virtuosity. Máirtín is one of the most
respected and loved accordion players in the country. One of
Ireland’s top fiddle players, Cathal’s solo banjo performances are
quite simply show-stopping. The phenomenal musical abilities of
Sligo’s own Séamie O’Dowd have become increasingly familiar at
international level in recent years. Together they produce a musical
experience that redefines one’s concept of brilliance, verging on
perfection. If this trio does not get you to your feet, nothing will.

Carthaginians
The Millennium Forum Derry
By Frank McGuinness
Directed by Adrian Dunbar
Thurs 1 – Fri 2 March, 8pm
¤18/15conc.
Frank McGuinness’ Carthaginians has often been acknowledged
as one of the few enduring plays to have emerged from ‘The
Troubles’.
An elegy for Bloody Sunday in Derry, it is the survival of tragedy,
of intense grief which becomes the unspoken subject through
the personal journeys of three women and three men who camp
out in a graveyard awaiting the rise of the dead.
This production commemorates the 40th anniversary of Bloody
Sunday and, appropriately within the theme of Carthaginians
celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Millennium Forum.

Barnstorm
Sound Affairs
By Mike Kenny, in collaboration
with Barnstorm Theatre Company.
Mon 5 – Tues 6 March, 10am & 12.30pm

Score by Charlie Barber
Wed 7 March, 8pm
¤15/12 conc.
A Murder of Crows is a dynamic and
theatrically exciting work for children aged
8 and over, based on the classic tale of
Hansel and Gretel. The play explores
themes of famine, family loyalties and
personal growth.
Six actors weave a gothic story of
two children's journey from
abandonment and fear to
ultimate survival, seen from
the quirky perspective of
a chorus of raucous
and garrulous crows,
whose boisterous
antics will delight
children.
A rare screening of one of the most
extraordinary and bizarre silent movies to
come out of Hollywood in the 1920s is
given a dramatic twist. Four
percussionists will perform live a score
specially written for the film by Charlie
Barber.
Adapted from a controversial Oscar Wilde
play and costing a staggering $350,000,
the film was produced by and starred the
flamboyant Russian actress, Alla
Nazimova. Her aim was to create a bold
and experimental work that would raise
the artistic level of American films.
However conservative 1920s audiences
simply weren’t ready for its erotically
charged aura and rumours that Nazimova
had insisted on an all gay and bi-sexual
cast in honour of Oscar Wilde added to
the film’s notoriety.
In recent years however, Salomé has
increasingly been acknowledged as
ahead of its time, in many ways, one of
the first arthouse films.

Showstopper!
The Improvised Musical
Seabright Productions
Wed 14 March, 8pm
¤18/15conc.
Something wicked this way comes… The vicious, barbaric
undercurrent in Shakespeare’s epic tragedy surfaces in this kinetic,
blood-thirsty production. Victorious on the battlefield, Macbeth’s
nobility and bravery are rewarded by an indebted king. But with
each enemy slaughtered to serve Macbeth’s own vaulting ambition,
his lust for power takes a deadly turn until he ferociously usurps
the kingdom. His reign, baptised in blood, spirals out of control and
Macbeth's deeds come back to tear him down.
A brand new musical is created from scratch at each performance
of this award-winning production, which has played sell-out
seasons in London’s West End and at the Edinburgh festival.
Audience suggestions help to create a show on the spot, as the allsinging, all-dancing cast improvise with unpredictable and
frequently hilarious results. Packed with drama, dazzling dance
routines and catchy melodies, Showstopper! leaves delighted
audiences singing all the way home.
Selected to open the 2012 Shakespeare Fest, The Globe, Germany.
“Having now seen Showstopper! twice, I can testify that not only is
each performance achingly funny, it’s a genuinely new full-length
musical every time. Top-class in creativity in action. Worth seeing
Time Out
again and again.”

This rarely performed play is a
tragic and touching story about
alienation and truth. The play
explores the conditions and
circumstances, which caused a
gentle woman to become
estranged from her life, while
giving the viewer a glance into
the terrifying events, which led to
this isolation.

triumphant as she excavates the

woman” The Sunday Times

Following two sold-out performances at the Hawk’s Well Theatre at
Sligo Live, The Speks return to the Hawk’s Well to celebrate St.
Patrick’s Day. The Speks are a six-piece traditional Irish music
band for children. They live on a mysterious Island off the coast of
Co. Clare called Glasses Island where everybody wears glasses!
Their debut album recently won a prestigious Parents’ Choice
music award in the US where their music has been described as
‘Riverdance for toddlers’ and ‘grown up music for kids.’ They
perform their nursery rhymes and sing-along songs set to acoustic
Irish music while encouraging kids to sing and dance along. This is
a great, fun event for kids.
‘If your little ones love fantastic, magical
songs…then The Speks are the boys for you’

A hilarious comedy set in a spartan
farmhouse holiday cottage owned by the
miserly Andrew Calvin Knox. Andrew’s
daughter Mary Rose has a somewhat
underdeveloped romantic education but
she has her eye on Donald the farm
hand. Life is uneventful until a city
dwelling couple, the Ramseys rent
the cottage for a week. When they
arrive, followed by a number of
others, events take a decided
turn and what follows is a
series of humorous
exchanges and comic
situations resulting in a
bagful of laughs.

Man 1, Bank 0 is Patrick Combs amazing-but-true story of how he
deposited a $95,093.35 junk-mail cheque into his own bank
account, as a joke, and the story that ensued after his bank clears
it. He’s rich – or is he? This outrageously funny comedy that quickly
becomes a staggering David vs Goliath-like real-life adventure,
returns to the Hawk’s Well after ‘smash hit’ sold out shows last
year in Ireland and internationally. This is a must-see one-man
comedy that you’ll never forget.

Feis Shligigh was founded in 1903 as a Gaelic Feis for Connacht.
The aims are the revival of national Language and Heritage. Dr.
Douglas Hyde, first President of Ireland, adjudicated the Irish
Language Competitions in the early days.
After a few years the Feis lapsed until 1929 and since then has
continued to grow from year to year. All sections of the Feis ran
concurrently during Easter Week until 2006. Since then because of
increasing numbers of competitors, it now takes place over 3
weekends before Easter ending with 4 days of Drama on the
Wednesday of Holy Week.
His first live DVD, Happy in Menace, is available now.

One of the first folk musicians to perform at the Hawk’s Well
Theatre 30 years ago, we are delighted to welcome the dulcet
tones of Freddie White back to Sligo. Whether interpreting songs
by his favorite writers, such as Randy Newman, Tom Waits, John
Hiatt and Guy Clark, or performing his own compositions, Freddie’s
live performances are nothing short of legendary.
Sligo Feis Ceoil nurtures, nourishes and celebrates the Arts in Sligo
on Easter week each year. Providing a platform for national and
international entrants to compete in the best possible venues Sligo
Feis Ceoil supports the learning objectives in the curriculum and
competitors take on board the adjudication they receive. It assists
them in the challenges they encounter throughout their education
and therefore enhances their personal development. Syllabus is

102 years in the business, the Kilfenora has gone from strength to
strength since their centenary!
From village parties in the early 1900s to bigger dances in the '30s,
broadcasts in the '40s, commercial recordings in the '50s, foreign
tours in the '60s right down to their current international profile they
have set the bar for other ensembles. The Kilfenora features
fiddles, bass, cello, flutes, banjo, concertina and accordion, with
what Folk Roots Magazine called "one of the tightest rhythm
sections in the world". They brewed up an open-air storm in Dublin
on the eve of the Millennium. Their gig in the National Concert Hall
on St. Patrick's Day has become an annual event. The visual
impact of up to twelve musicians exuberantly driving the dancers
on is what sets them apart and makes them unique.
