In “Waterworld”, several different societies have emerged. There are communities of survivors living on floating cities called Atolls, bands of Smokers (pirates) under the command of the evil Deacon, and loners who roam the seas on man-made ships in search of commodities to trade for supplies. The Mariner (Kevin Costner) is a loner who reluctantly befriends Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and her young companion, Enola (Tina Majorino) to help them escape from the Deacon and his band of Smokers, who believe that Enola holds the key to finding the mythical Dryland. The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 5 of 37) The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 6 of 37) According to the film, what caused the earth to flood itself? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 7 of 37) Is it technically and/or theoretically possible for the polar ice caps to melt? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 8 of 37) Is it possible to flood the earth, if the polar ice caps melted, given the known amount of surface water available for the task? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 9 of 37) If the polar ice caps did completely melt, would most of the land masses be underwater? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 10 of 37) If the Earth was covered with water, and very little dry land existed, would humans have enough oxygen to survive? Where would most of the oxygen come from? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 11 of 37) After the polar ice caps melted, how did humans adapt socially and physiologically to their new environment in Waterworld? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 12 of 37) The survivors called their floating cities “atolls”. How does this compare with the actual definition of an atoll? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 13 of 37) What did the humans value on the atoll, and why? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 14 of 37) Why does the Mariner distill and drink his own urine rather than using ocean water? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 15 of 37) What made the mariner different? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 16 of 37) How did the mariner get that way (become different)? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 17 of 37) Does it make biological sense for the Mariner’s gills to be located behind his ears? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 18 of 37) Would the Mariner’s gills be functionally effective? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 19 of 37) Would it make biological sense for the Mariner to have developed webbed feet? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 20 of 37) What powered the mariner’s vessel? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 21 of 37) What was the mariner seeking? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 22 of 37) Why did the mariner have no interest in Helen? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 23 of 37) Who was Enola, and what made her special? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 24 of 37) Why was Helen so protective of Enola? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 25 of 37) Was it true altruism, or did Helen and her genes benefit from the relationship (with Enola)? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 26 of 37) Who were the smokers? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 27 of 37) What powered the smoker’s vessel and all of their vehicles? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 28 of 37) What civilization did the smokers represent? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 29 of 37) Could plants survive in soil that was obtained from the bottom of the ocean? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 30 of 37) As Helen breathes, what would happen to the concentration of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the bubble? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 31 of 37) How would the pressure of the water affect Helen and the Mariner as they reach a greater depth? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 32 of 37) Would the Mariner’s gills continue to be effective at a greater depth? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 33 of 37) What is the name of the mountain depicted on Enola’s tattoo? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 34 of 37) What animals are present on dry land? What animals would you expect to see? The Academic Support Center @ Daytona State College (Science 90 Page 35 of 37) What does the film predict for the future of fossil fuels and the humans who depend on them?
