Our standards in society are so different from God’s standards.
We often rate or rank people by what they have, how powerful
they are, or how successful they are. Jesus reminds us that
God will not judge us by the same earthly standards.

Mass Intentions
Dear People of God,
What a rain storm this last week! I hope your
basement is dry and that you did not suffer any
damage.
If you remember, we prepared one young man for
his First Holy Communion last Spring. Keith will
be seen at our Masses as an Altar Server in the
months ahead, which brings us to the upcoming
season: how many young people do we have who
want spiritual formation this year? One family
has approached me for Holy Communion, and
post Holy Communion formation for their children. Fortunately we have young adults who are
willing to help with spiritual formation. At this
time, I will start a list of names and contact information so that we can get started. If you have, or
you know someone eighteen years or younger
who needs spiritual formation, please get with me
after Sunday Mass, or leave a note with our Office Manager, Donna so that we can organize to
serve these young people.
For all adults, we will resume Bible Study soon;
announcements are coming. And we have a lecture series Thursday nights, 7:30 pm in the St.
Joseph (basement) room of the rectory, accessible
by exterior stairway. Young adults to ninety-nine
years old meet after the 10:00 am Mass (about
11:30 am) in the St. Joseph Room. Please feel
free to bring “nibbles” to share.
Thanks go to a parishioner couple who dropped
off a check for $2,000 for general purposes. I am
so grateful! We just suffered a short circuit in the
vestibule (entry-way). Thanks to this donation,
we can afford to get this problem resolved. The
vestibule lights are functional today, Monday; but
the shorted circuit will require a second visit from
the electrician. We are in your debt, kind donor!
Praised be Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

DISCIPLINE
It is no accident that the words “disciple” and
“discipline” are nearly identical. Their relationship in
Christian faith and life, however, has fallen somewhat
out of favor in the past generation, as certain prescribed
Church rules and regulations have been reduced and relaxed. These rules were often referred to as
“disciplines.” We are mistaken, however, to think that it
no longer takes discipline to follow Christ. The Letter to
the Hebrews assures us of that today. Our discipline is
more like that of an athlete pursuing a victory or a personal best, or a musician striving for a concert career or
to master a new piece of music. This discipline comes
from desire, not from regulations. It was the desire to do
the will of God that led Jesus on the path to his cross. It
is that same desire he encourages in us today: to strive to
enter through the narrow gate, to find ourselves in the
kingdom with a surprising assortment of people who are
there not because of mere observation of rules, but out
of a genuine desire to recline at the table of the heavenly
banquet.
