Hello to all...
It doesn’t seem possible that it is
already April and that the last HOA
meeting for this season is about to be
called to order. Where does the time go?
Most of us thought that after the Park
Olympics were over things would slow
down, but we know that doesn’t happen
in Holiday Park. The month of March
was very busy. Some of the activities
that took place included the corned beef
dinner, a dance on the 15th featuring a
classic rock band, the golf cart parade,
and also tournaments held by the tennis
and pickle ball clubs.
In April there will be a pizza party on
the 12th, and also a fun night at the races
on the 26th. A light lunch will be served
that night, free popcorn will be available,
and of course soda, water, and an adult
beverage can be purchased for a nominal
fee.
Hopefully, there will be lots of
winners, but we know everyone will have
a great time. Preparations are already
being made for some super activities to
be held during the summer and news
about these events will be published in
the May article.
For those residents heading up
north for the summer, have a safe trip
and please don’t forget to notify the Park
office of your summer address, also, have
a care taker lined up to do weeding and
check on your property while you are
gone, and most importantly put all your
outside furniture, grills, bikes etc. away
so they will not blow around in case of a
storm.

willing to help out whenever they were

BOARD OF TRUSTEES
At the regular meeting of the Holiday
Park Board of Trustees held on Thursday,
March 13th, four Park residents who were
candidates for the Board election spoke to
the residents assembled there about their
reasons for wanting to be a Trustee, and
each of them gave a brief resume of their
beliefs, backgrounds and qualifications.
These four residents were Karin Anderson,
Dick Gortz, Judy McClennan, and Mike
Nasalski. The election was held on March
25th and the results will be published next
month. A special thanks to office secretary
Christina Meeker and bookkeeper Cindi
Calderone for the fine job they did
preparing and mailing out all the election
notice letters as well as preparing the
fliers and newspaper announcements
regarding the election. These ladies do a
great job in the office for all of us and we
should all take time to thank them.
Board Chairperson Diane Schleer
reported on a recently held mediation
between the District and a Park resident
regarding a dog issue. As a result of the
mediation, the resident agreed to abide
by the Deed Restrictions regarding pets
by keeping his pet on a leash at all times
outside of his home, cleaning up after his
animal and placing the pet in a back room
when the resident is away from his home.
Chairperson Schleer also announced that
the annual reorganizational meeting of
the Board will be held on Monday, March
31, 2014, in the Phase 1 hall at 5PM.

the Board a report about several of the projects completed
in the Park since the last meeting. These included repairs
to the front pedestrian gate, and a door closer in the Phase
II dart room. Also, repairs were made to the kayak rack in
the Phase 1 compound, remounting of an overhead light
in the Phase 1 pool room was done, as well as the installation of several new bricks on the memorial pathway. Additionally, the geothermal heaters were repaired at the
Phase 1 pool and many trees were trimmed throughout
the Park. A plumbing leak was fixed at the Phase 11 pool
pump, several mailbox posts were replaced, and all common areas were sprayed for fire ants. Our maintenance
employees do an excellent job of keeping our Park looking
so great and the Board is very pleased with the work they
do every day.
The Board voted to approve a new line item to be
placed in the restricted reserve section of the budget for
a new pickle ball court, and also agreed to construct four
new horseshoe pits in the Phase 11 shuffleboard court

area. Also, permission was given to a resident on Palena
Blvd. to have an emotional support animal and the Board
designated two parking spaces near the laundry room in
Phase 11 and one space outside the laundry room in Phase
1 as reserved spaces for persons using the laundry facilities.
Some topics the Board will be discussing at upcoming workshops include creating a mission statement for
the Board, creating a code of ethics for members of the
Board as well as a resolution describing consequences if
a Trustee violates this code. The Board will also be reviewing and updating the Trustee handbook, and deciding if
cameras should be purchased for the back gates and the
compounds. Additionally, the Board will be reviewing the
budget for the 2014, 2015 fiscal year. Hopefully, the residents of Holiday Park recognize and appreciate the time
and effort the members of the Board put in on your behalf. We are constantly trying to do our best to continue
to make our Park the best one in the area.

yard sale of the season
was another great success. With all the continued
volunteering,
we made $1500 between the two sale days and the earlier pre-sale at the PH1 shed! THANKS, to all who made
it possible. Our picnic on the 22nd was another success
and was our biggest attendance of this season. We ended
the month with our yearly Anniversary dinner for all the
members to celebrate another great year here at Holiday
Park. And we're not done yet! Next month, April, we begin with our final picnic of the season, the Beer & Brats Picnic on the 5th at noon. If you haven't left yet, don't miss
it! This is followed by our final event of the season, our
April Regular meeting on the 10th (last chance for Abbe's
doughnuts). Remember, we members who live in the park
all year round are still working and planning next year's activities for you. Until then, have a happy and safe summer
and we'll see you in October.

our Park Manager in the person of Tom Burris, very qualified to undertake this position. He was hired in November
of 1995 and stayed with us for 10 years. The next time we
meet you will meet Tom and you will understand why we
were the lucky ones as we continue our “Journey Back in
Time”.

We have had some great
rides lately. The first was
Myakka State Forest (not to
be confused with Myakka
State Park) off River Road.
Roger Colthorp was the
leader on this pedal. Seven of us took this adventure on
a beautiful Florida day. Most of us had not been there before and were pleasantly surprised what a nice place. It
was all bike path so no cars to deal with; that is always a
plus in my book. It was a combination of sunny sections
and then great shady areas. Very pretty and so glad Roger
introduced us to this area.
Dave Baker was the lead on our next ride through
Deer Prairie Creek. We have done this area before but not
through the grassy paths that Dave guided us through. It
was a very hard pedal but so very worth it. Such a pretty
area, sections were open fields and then you would go into
shade tree areas and then down near the water. It really
had many different views. We spied a loaded orange tree
at the beginning of our ride and decided that would be
great to stop there on the way back and pick ourselves a
few oranges, nothing like fresh oranges from the tree. So
that is what we did on the return route. A few of us peeled
one of the oranges and wow, I mean wow, was it sour!
Never have I tasted an orange that bitter. So bummer, no
oranges for us. After we returned to the cars and loaded
our bikes back up we drove about a mile or two to Carlton
Reserve and did a short birding walk courtesy of Jack Capper and Joe Rothermund. Joe did his bird call for the redheaded woodpecker and soon Jan Baker spotted one such
bird in a tree not far from us. It was a bit hard to see him
and we were all so glad it went to a nearby tree that had
no foliage so we could all clearly spot him. Joe and Jack
had their binoculars with them and we all were able to get
a close up look, it was so cool.
Cape Haze was our next destination. Another great
day for a bike ride. It was a bit windy but not a problem.
We made several stops, specifically at the first bridge over
Coral Creek. What a view. We stayed awhile enjoying the
birds and fish and scenery. They off we went to the pier at
the other end of Coral Creek. Just so lovely by the water.
Lorna and Al Patey planned our next ride which was
Pine Island. They used to live there so they were able to

give good insight on the island. Our first stop was a beach
area. Lorna said that most areas are very rocky and this
was the only one that was a sandy beach in the St. James
City area. We got back on the bikes and rode about 5 miles
and then stopped at the Pateys friends place by the water.
Their friend had given Al and Lorna the thumbs up to bring
our group by and we enjoyed their outside patio/tiki hut
right along the water’s edge. After that we biked some of
the streets in St. James City seeing many views of the water, it was all so pretty. Then on the return trip to where we
parked the cars we stopped at a nature trail going right out
through the mangroves. Very beautiful. Back on the bikes
we returned to our cars. A Dairy Queen is on the island, so I
guess I don’t have to tell you what we did next!!
Many thanks to Roger, Dave and the Pateys. Kathy
Armstrong is leading our next ride, Palm Island. That is always a favorite. We ferry over to the island and then she
will take us through the streets on the island, and then
lunch at Rum Bay. Will be a great ride and many thanks to
her for making this ride happen.

monthly
tennis
meeting was held
with Mike Conrathe
TENNIS CLUB presiding. Plans
were finalized for
the many activities happening in March. The Mixed Doubles tournament is scheduled March 12th and 15th. Roland Ficken and Judy McClennan handle this tournament.
It is the only one of our monthly fun tournaments that is
on a more serious note. All our members look forward to
watching some fine tennis during this tournament. We
have a picnic on the day of the finals to celebrate the winning champions and all of the participants.
The second annual Shuffleboard tournament will be
held March 23rd. Mike Conrathe will handle the set up of
play with the assistance of Ed Reynolds from the Shuffleboard Club. Mike Nasalski is handling the picnic part. This
event was a huge hit last year, everyone enjoyed getting
together and having some fun on the shuffleboard courts.
Our end of the year banquet (say it isn’t so!!) will be held
at Luigi’s in Port Charlotte on Sunday March 30th. Brad
Carlston and Bill Wells have made the arrangements for
this event. Winners of the Mixed Doubles tournament will
be honored and given their trophies at this time.
March is a busy time, league play is still happening and
lots of extra activities. So many of our members take time
to handle things for our tennis club, from social events,
to league play, to doing a little extra for maintaining the
courts, and then of course the Park, we are so pleased with
the third court and the maintenance staff for all they do
from blowing off the courts to getting our coffee and tea
set up for the various events. Thanks to everyone, another
mighty fine season in Holiday Park!

HOLIDAY PARK
Wednesday, Feb., 26th 13 of us
launched out of the North Jetty
in Nokomis and paddled the ICW.
Must have seen at least 40 pelican fledglings preening and napping atop the pilings. We came
across a nest of turkey vultures…
magnificent birds…and watched some snowy egrets ‘fishing’! Walter found a bunch of ‘Spanish dancers’ that we enjoyed watching for quite a while. The paddle back got a bit
sketchy, with 3 foot waves in the ‘narrows’, so all but one
daring soul, who shall remain nameless, pulled out at the
public ramp! A few of us trudged back about ½ mile on
foot to retrieve some vehicles, return and rescue the lollygaggers! Picnic lunch, great camaraderie and a beautiful

March breakfast meeting was done by Lucia and Nancy.
They decorated in green for St.. Patrick's Day. We had a
pot of candy with a gold golf ball. They did a great job.

The low score for this year was 73 until today when it was
beaten by Evelyn with a 71. We have been having lunch
at the course and the girls have done a great job. This is it

ZOOMBA CLASSES
Hooray, Spring is here!! As many of our Zoomba participants will be heading north this month, our classes will
end just before Easter. Hope you have all enjoyed our class
as much as I did. The schedule for April is as follows:
April 1, 3, 8, 15 and 17
Classes begin at 8:50 a.m. and end at 9:50 a.m. and are
held in the Phase 1 Recreation Hall. If you have never attended a class, it's not too late to join us. New members
are always welcome. Have a safe and healthy summer and

HELPING HAND TREE PROGRAM
TREE WORK REPORT - Helping Hand Committee has been
busy with tree work since the March issue of this paper. We
worked on 41 different homeowner's properties by trimming and removing trees. Removing dead trees and trimming live ones improves the appearance of the park.
Tips while you are away. If you have a new planting, arrange for your care taker to water them until the rainy
seasons begins in June. Do fertilize any plantings before
you leave the park. Osmocote is the trade name of a slow
release fertilizer that works well in sandy soils. You will be
surprised how your plants will respond when you return.
Urea is a slow release form of nitrogen that will be helpful
also.
