The Art of Sharing the Road
s you walk, stroll, or jog through
downtown Doylestown this
spring, take a moment to stop and
enjoy the colorful, and sometimes humorous, posters displayed in shop
windows. Aside from being impressive artistically, each poster illustrates
one of 17 safety reminders for pedestrians, cyclists, or motorists who
share the streets and sidewalks of the Borough.
The poster project, which was open to 7th, 8th,
and 9th graders attending school in the Borough,
produced nearly 50 colorful images in a variety
of mediums. The posters which best portray the
“We Share the Road” message were selected by
the Revitalization Board to be on display at the
Doylestown Library during the first two weeks of
March; they are now displayed in downtown
shop windows as a part of Doylestown Borough's Safe Walking Initiative.
"We were delighted by the number of students
who contributed their time and artistic talent by
making a poster," said Revitalization Board
chairwoman, Karen Young. "It's this
kind of enthusiasm and involvement
which continues to make our community a safer place for residents and
visitors alike."
As a part of the Safe Walking Initiative, the Revitalization Board has also
developed a brochure that highlights
safety reminders for all who use the Borough
streets and sidewalks. Starting this spring, local
police officers will be carrying the brochure with
them. "Often people who break the safety laws
aren't aware that they're doing the wrong thing,"
said Chief Donnelly, "the new brochure will give
my officers a friendly way of educating the public."
After enjoying the posters, make your own contribution to safety by walking over to Borough
Hall at 57 West Court Street to pick up copies of
the safe walking brochure to share with family
and friends. Organizations are encouraged to
use the brochure as a part of their own safety
initiatives.

How can I follow Progress on the
Courthouse Project?
C
urrently, plans for the new courthouse and related
parking garage are proceeding through the Borough’s
Land Development review process. The plans are currently being reviewed by the Planning Commission, which
meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month in Borough Hall.
This is the first group to evaluate the proposal and meetings can be very informative. The meetings start at 7:30
pm and all residents are welcome

"Cool"-The Borough's Senior Task Force finds that it is
"right on" as it continues to work with Council and its Revitalization Board to support that kind of home town where
we all, regardless of age, have a good life. This is in
keeping with the Administration on Aging's motto for May,
Older Americans Month-"WORKING TOGETHER FOR
STRONG HEALTHY AND SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITIES"!
Join us, the second Tuesday of each month, from 1:003:00 PM, at Borough Hall (sometimes we go off site for
special programs-watch the newspaper). The PUBLIC is
invited to attend and find out what information is available
to assist older persons and their families.
The first name and number everyone should have is the
Bucks County Area Agency on Aging, 30 E. Oakland
Ave., Doylestown, Pa. (2150-348-0510) They administer
programs and services throughout the county and supply
and maintain a kit of information for the Senior Task
Force to use in the Borough Hall at 57 W. Court Street,
Doylestown.
The Task Force also disseminates to other interested organizations a copy of "Guide to Retirement Living" with
listings of every Aging resource in this are.

DOYLESTOWN CLEAN & GREEN
S
pring is here, and our hearty band of volunteers are
back to clean the streets of downtown Doylestown.
Starting on the second Saturday, April 12, students from
Lenape Middle School will kick off the season with a “clean
sweep” from 8:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. The clean-up will begin at Starbucks, at State and Main Streets. The Borough
will be providing brooms and trash bags, as before. Gloves
and dust pans will also be provided. If you can bring your
own broom, that is a help. Refreshments will be served.
Clean-ups will continue through the spring, summer, and
fall, on the second Saturday of each month, May 10, June
14, July 12, etc.
Doylestown Clean and Green is a joint effort of the Borough, businesses, and volunteers. To volunteer, please
call 215-348-4362. Thank you to those who have been involved in the clean-up, and those conscientious residents
who pick up trash as they walk the streets. Doylestown is a
beautiful town because people care!
We all want to "live until we die" and one way of doing
that safely is to have "Vial of Life" in your refrigerator with
a sticker on the door indicating it is there. The Vial has a
place inside to list all medications and next-of-kin and
available to Emergency Personnel. Vials can be obtained
at the AAA and Borough Hall.
The Senior Task Force needs your interest and input to
continue to evaluate what needs to be done and how can
we, the neighbors, make it happen in Doylestown. One
way each of us can begin is to become a little more aware
and sensitive to the growing population of Baby Boomers
and their older families. Do you know the "elders" on your
street who may need a helping hand once in a while?
Families need information and support when faced with
later life and end of life decisions.
We may not have it all, but we have a lot of willing and
friendly volunteers who are willing to do their part. Please
do yours and attend a Task Force meeting to learn about
senior issues and share your ideas with us.

Becoming Bicycle-Friendly
Bikes Are Not Blocking Traffic – They Are Traffic
Share the Road – It’s the Law
As warmer weather arrives the number of bicyclists on
the road increases. Motorists and cyclists should understand that bicycles are vehicles and therefore subject to all the same rules of the road as a car, with
some special exceptions.

turning. In addition, a right turn may be signaled with the left
arm by extending the arm bent at the elbow with the forearm
and hand up. Slowing down and stopping can be signaled by

Ride Right:
Bicycles should be in the right-most lane on a street
with two-way traffic. Riders may occupy the middle of
the lane they are riding, but should stay right and
move over to allow vehicles to pass when it is safe to
do so. Bicyclists may elect to ride on the shoulder of
the road if is safe to do so. Bikes should not be ridden
on the sidewalk, except in special circumstances.
When parking on the street, be sure to watch out for
bikes when you open your car door.
Treat the bicycle as you would any other slower vehicle:
Don’t tailgate or squeeze by in a tight spot. Don’t try to pass
on a tight corner or a blind crest of a hill. Don’t try to force a
cycle onto a dangerous shoulder.
Pass safely:
Slow down and wait for a safe place to pass a cyclist.
The cyclist knows you want to pass and will look for a
safe place to move over so you can do so.
Watch for cyclists:
Be careful turning- look for cyclists and pedestrians
crossing. Cyclists should not pass on the right of cars
at intersections. Cyclists should use hand signals and
motorists should pay attention to them. In Pennsylvania bicyclists may signal a right or left turn by ex-

Honking your horn can startle a cyclist and cause them to
stop, swerve, or fall. The only reason to honk at a cyclist is to
alert them to some emergency. Motorists should also be
aware that cyclists may not be able to hear them because of
wind noise.
Protective Gear:
Riders should wear a helmet and ride a bike equipped with
the proper reflectors and lights as needed. Note that by law,
children under 12 must wear a helmet.
Bikes provide a sustainable and healthy alternative to cars
and are very well suited for a town like ours. When bikes and
cars share the road, everyone benefits. For more information

Did You Know…..?
The Property Maintenance Code requires all
grass and weeds to be trimmed to a height of
no more than 8”. Sidewalks also must be kept
clear of overhanging bushes, branches and
shrubs to allow clear passage of pedestrians.
These regulations are enforced by the Borough’s Code Enforcement Officers. A notice
letter of a potential violation is sent to the property owner first, and if the problem is not resolved in a timely manner, a citation is issued.

join the 3400 athletes who are part of our wonderful community of
runners. In 2007, the Series earned $99,000 for our seven important
local causes.
New for 2008
All of our races will feature the Championship timing and scoring
system. In addition, this year’s custom moisture wicking shirt will be
a long sleeve version. These special shirts are awarded to runners
who pre-register for all seven races.

Each race gives 1-2-3 place awards in 5 year age groups. We also
recognize the overall male and female winners and the top agegraded male and female master racers. Every race has a 1 mile fun
run with awards for all finishers. Some races include either a 2 mile
fitness walk or a 5K walk. As always, Series overall and age group
winners will receive our custom Bucks 5K Series tile.
The Courses
In 2007, runners broke course records in three separate races. All of
our beautiful courses have been officially certified by the USA Track
and Field Association. The miles are accurately measured, clearly
marked and include mile split times. Marshals ensure safety over the
courses, with street closings where necessary. Water stations and
emergency personnel are a regular part of the races.
Finish Line Fun
Enjoy great food, music, and the fellowship of the running community
while the race results are tabulated. Our computerized scoring systems provide prompt and accurate results. Raffles and special
events are planned for the various races.

Join Doylestown’s Hometown Bike Racing Team
T
he Doylestown Wheelmen is a local bicycle club that
has existed for more than 50 years. The Wheelmen
offer the opportunity for cyclist to try racing and the club
team is looking for beginner, intermediate, and experienced
riders to join their road and mountain bike team. The
Wheelmen’s club team, Cyclesports/Zaveta Construction, is
a USA Cycling licensed race team. No prior racing experience is necessary and joining the club team offers several
benefits for causal and serious riders alike.
Road
The team’s road racers compete in many local and regional
races. Road racing is divided into 5 categories based on
rider speed. Categories 1 and 2 are professional level riders. Cat 3 is top level amateurs. Cat 4 is fast amateurs, but
not as fast as Cat 3. Cat 5 is where all racers start out. In
addition to these 5 categories, there are also age groups
such as Juniors (youth) and “Over 40” classes.
Mountain
The team’s mountain bike riders compete in various regional series. This includes the H2H series in New Jersey
and the Mid-Atlantic Super Series (“MASS”), which runs
about 10 races in the tri-state area including one race in
Bucks County (Neshaminy). The categories in Mountain
Bike racing are Elite, Expert, Sport, and Beginner. These
are then sub-divided into age groups. The races run from 5
to 7 miles for beginner up to more than 20 miles for the Elites. The courses are off-road on trails and are generally
steep and technical in sections. It requires strong cardio
fitness combined with good bike handling skills. There are
classes for every one including kids 10 & under, 11-12, 1314, and more all the way up to Masters and 50+ age.

Scenic Stroll: 2008 Spring Schedule
T
he Doylestown Borough Park and Recreation Board extends an invitation to join us for the Spring Scenic Stroll
(formally called Walkfit). Come walk with us and see spring bloom in Doylestown as the trees come to life waiting for
the birds to arrive from the south. Active seniors, grandkids, friends, relatives, and neighbors are welcome to walk with
us on Wednesdays at 10:00 A.M. We walk in sunshine, but not in rain. Our fun is contagious, so come join us at one of
the four walks around town. Plus, this year we have been invited to be the first to take the Doylestown Historical SelfGuided Walking Tour!
A gem of our park system is Chapman Park, a wonderful collection of wooded, well manicured paths near the Borough’s
Fishing Pond. Walking through town is a great way to get an intimate look at Doylestown with its wonderful architecture.
Fonthill Woods are always fun to explore - the paths are not paved so wear appropriate foot gear. This year we have two
new self -guided walks through the Historical District. So, lace up your walking shoes and join in!

CURBSIDE TREE BRANCH PICK-UP
oylestown Borough will hold a tree branch pick-up on
Friday, May 30, 2008 (weather permitting). Residents
must contact Doylestown Borough at 215-345-4140 no
later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 23, 2008 to arrange for
the pick-up.
Tree branches should be cut into lengths as long as possible with a maximum diameter of 5". NO FIREWOOD. All
branches should be placed at the curb line or edge of the
driveway.
Please keep in mind that this program is for disposal of tree
branches only. Root balls, hedges, or grass clippings
should be collected by arrangement with your private trash
service.
First Saturday Chess
F
rom beginner to Grand Master, join us this summer for
the third year of First Saturday Chess in the Park.
Outside games will start on Saturday June 7 and continue
on July 5, August 2 and September 6.
Director John Connelly will be teaching and facilitating
game play.
We will be playing at the Doylestown
Historical Society Park from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. The park is located just behind the
Doylestown Historical Society Building at
56 South Main Street. Players of all
ages and levels are welcome. Boards
and game pieces will be provided, but
feel free to bring your own lucky set.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE
D
oylestown’s Memorial Day Parade will
take place on Monday, May 26. This annual event, sponsored by the United Veterans
of Doylestown, generates great enthusiasm,
large crowds, and intense patriotic feelings.
The parade will feature Central Bucks Middle
and High School Bands, numerous fire companies, military units, and a variety of floats and
marchers from area community organizations.
Any group wishing to participate should send
in an application, available at Borough Hall.

mailed or faxed. Participants are asked to follow the rules indicated in the application. A
group banner is permitted; however, commercial, political, or “join-up” messages are inappropriate.
We need to remember that Memorial Day is
the day to honor our veterans and war dead.
The most meaningful ceremonies take place at
the Courthouse, War Memorial Field, and
Doylestown Cemetery. Come join the veterans’ groups as they honor those who have
fought and died for the preservation of our
great country.

Fire Marshal’s Report
DO YOU NEED A FREE SAFETY INSPECTION?
Recently the Borough of Doylestown lost one of our residents in a tragic fast-moving fire. Even with the heroic efforts
of the Doylestown Fire Company the outcome of rescuing the resident was unsuccessful. I would like to dedicate this
section of the Borough Bulletin to Brenda Orr. With your recognition of the importance of fire safety, we can keep her
memory with us and prevent future tragic events. I would like to remind all residents of the free fire safety inspections, heater inspections, and smoke detector inspections performed by the Fire Marshal’s office.
The Borough employs four full-time highly trained staff members that are available to help you identify potential hazards and recommend steps to correct them. All of these staff members are certified with various levels of building
inspections, fire investigations, and emergency management. Please contact the Borough Office if you would like to
schedule a free inspection of your residence with any of our inspectors:

Summer Program
Teen Center
he Central Bucks Family YMCA Teen Center (located directly across from Central
Bucks High School West) is here to provide a
safe and enjoyable environment for our community’s youth. The Teen Center is open from 3-9
PM, Tuesday thru Friday, and on Saturday from
1-5 PM. During after school hours, the Teen
Center’s doors are open to all youth in the community, from grades 7-12, at no cost. Adjacent
to the building is our beautiful skate park which
offers sessions and programs for all ages and
opens for the season April 1, 2008.
The center itself hosts such activities as a Verizon
Fios Internet Zone, pool table, snack bar and XBox 360 on a big screen TV with games such as
Rock Band and Guitar Hero 3. During the week,
the center is supervised by qualified staff who
also offer their time to help teens with home work,
school projects, or just to hang out. Our commitment to improving community life is shown
through our programs that we offer such as Baby
Sitter training for ages 11-14 and offered every
other month. We also offer CPR certification
from the American Heart Association for ages
15-18 which is also held every other month.
The first and third Friday of every month the
Teen Center hosts “Teen Night” for 7th, 8th and
9th graders from 7-10 PM, at no cost. It is a
night to hang, meet teens from other middle
schools, listen to music, and enjoy free pizza!
The 2nd and 4th Friday the center showcases
local music talent at our Band Jams. On Saturdays and Sundays, the teen center is the perfect place to host your next birthday party at an
hourly rate with free set-up time!

egistration for the Burpee Park Summer Program is
just around the corner. Once again, registration will
be held in Borough Hall, 57 West Court Street. Parents
of children who reside within the Borough limits will
be given first priority and may register during the
week of May 12, 2008 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00
p.m. Non-Borough residents and Borough residents
may register the week of May 19, 2008. If you are unable
to register in person, the registration forms in this packet
may be used and mailed to the Doylestown Borough office. There is no charge for registration.
Registration will not be limited initially, since
many children register but may only attend for a week or
perhaps a few isolated days. Please note there are two
different registration forms, one for Arts and Crafts and
one for Outdoor Games. Please feel free to register for
both programs. However, in order to accommodate more
children, we ask that you only register for one Arts and
Crafts session per week (either the 9:15 - 10:15 session
or the 10:30 - 11:30 session). Daily Arts and Crafts sessions will be limited to a maximum of 35 children per
session. Borough residents and pre-registered students will be given priority over “drop-ins.” Registration does not guarantee admittance to every class.
In order to maintain a free program and accommodate the large number of children who participate in
both the Arts and Crafts and Outdoor Games programs,
parents are requested to volunteer their services. You
can be of assistance by helping to set up and/or clean up
materials and by helping younger children with crafts or
games. Please sign up to volunteer for one or more Arts
and Crafts session and/or Outdoor Games session. Parental support is an important ingredient to the success
of the program, especially as the community interest
continues to grow. We’re looking forward to another
great summer together!

he Youth Services Librarians of the
Bucks County Free Library’s Doylestown Branch are on the go this summer, and we invite
everyone young and old to a special series of Stories in
the Parks. From 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and
Thursdays during the months of June and August, a
Youth Services librarian from the Doylestown library
branch will present a program in one of four of the Borough’s parks. The lunchtime program will consist of music, stories, songs, jokes and silliness for youngsters up
to the age of twelve. No registration is required. If you
like, bring along a blanket, a picnic lunch and cold
drinks. Children under 8 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
During the month of July everyone is welcome to stop
into the library for our scheduled summer reading programs, Catch the Reading Bug @ the Doylestown Library. For further information about either the Stories in

oylestown Borough has approved an overhaul to
Burpee Park, located at Church and Oakland
Streets. The staff of Flo Smerconish Realtor is cooperating with the Borough to help raise $150,000. Their
goal is to replace the swing sets, develop two new, improved tot lots, as well as adding a “wood carpet”, landscaping and fencing. Contributions from local businesses, friends and neighbors are needed to rehab this

COURTHOUSE FOUNTAIN
A
lthough the memorial
fountain located at the
corner of Main and Broad
Sts. on the northern most
point of the Bucks County
Courthouse was built as a
WWI monument, it is considered a monument to all
veterans. The WWI soldiers cast in bronze pay tribute to the
war dead from the Revolution to the Korean conflict, commemorating the “valor and sacrifices of the men and women
of Doylestown and the surrounding country”.
Sculptor John Bateman of Haddonfield, NJ, executed the
fountain for a cost of $8,500.00. Three Gold Star mothers
whose sons had died in France dedicated it on Memorial
Day of 1922. The seven panels depict the following: the
names of four WWI battles, a bas-relief of a soldier, an ambulance, a town, a bas-relief of marching rows of soldiers,
and the seal of Bucks County.
Doylestown’s own Russell Gulik and Raymond L. “Ike”
Rutherford (the soldier holding the canteen) served as models. Raymond Rutherford was the brother of the late noted
local historian Milton Rutherford, owner of Rutherford’s
Camera Shop on State St. Raymond was 17 years old
when he joined Company G headquartered at the armory in
Doylestown. According to family sources, he lied about his
age in order to enlist. Raymond didn’t particularly want to go
to war, but knew that important events were in the making.
Raymond felt that he wanted to be a part of history.
Daniel Atkinson, who
would later become one
of the mayors of Doylestown, and Wm. R. Mercer, Jr., who executed
the design that included
the monolithic fountain
bowl, invited Rutherford and Gulik to “Aldie” one afternoon. They were instructed to wear their service uniforms.
The two veterans posed outside Mr. Mercer’s studio on a
wooden revolving platform in front of a stand of trees.
Gustave Sanders took four photographs. After the pictures were taken, Raymond and Russell were treated to a
glass of ginger ale before they left.
In the early 1970’s an environmentally conscious county
government turned off the fountain during a period of
drought. After lobbying, the United Veterans of Bucks
County asked for and were given an exemption from the
state to turn the fountain back on. When it was discovered
that the water emptied into a storm drain in violation of
borough ordinances, the fountain was turned off again in
order to install a recirculating system. The pump, electrical wiring and other materials cost about $400.00 to clean
and repair and the system.
Raymond Rutherford died the afternoon that The Daily
Intelligencer ran the article about the fountain being restored and turned on. He never knew that the fountain
was once more in operation.

SENIOR GAMES
I
f you have participated in Senior Games in past years, then come on back and join your friends. If not, here is your
chance to have fun and meet new people with the same interests as you. Participants, for this great event, come from
all over the County. This year’s Bucks County Senior Games will be held in May and June, and over 400 seniors participate each year. The Games are held for seniors 50 years and older. There are 22 events with something for everyone including: golf, tennis, bicycling, bowling, swimming, badminton, track and field, plus much more! The purpose of
the Games is to encourage seniors to stay healthy and active, and become more health-conscious. In addition to the
sports activities, there will be a Health Expo featuring a Fashion Show and Entertainment. The Games are cosponsored with the Bucks County Area Agency on Aging, Bucks County Dept. of Parks and Recreation, and Independence Blue Cross/Keystone Health Plan East.
Activities will be held at various locations throughout the county, check the listing below. Registration before
