Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is currently in the process of completing the re-accreditation process for the Middle States Commission on Elementary Schools. OLMC has been a member since 1989 and was one of the first schools in the archdiocese to receive accreditation. The protocol we are using is called Excellence by Design and begins with creating three foundation documents: our Mission, Belief Statements, and Profile of Graduates. The report then involves a full-year self-study in which the faculty, staff, administration, students, parents and other stakeholders evaluate our strengths and weaknesses within 12 different standards. Middle States surveys were completed by the parents, faculty, and sixth through eighth grade students in order to evaluate a broad range of topics such as Academic Program, Facilities, and Leadership. Our faculty and staff, headed by our internal coordinators Mrs. Morelli and Mrs. Tomlinson, have been working very hard to compile the data, interpret the results, and prepare reports related to each of the standards. Once the reports are written, they will be combined into a single document which will direct us to formulate a forward-thinking strategic plan. The scope and sequence of this project covers every aspect of our school community and educational program. I can’t commend our faculty and staff enough for the effort they have put into this project; in addition to all of their responsibilities, they have worked tirelessly to meet the deadlines set forth. I would also like to thank the many parents who took time to complete the surveys and offer input. We are off to a great start and I look forward to sharing our results in future articles. God Bless, Dawn Parker Please remember: Julia M. Ferris, Terrence K. Welsh, Amalia Batog, and all the faithful departed. “May God hold them in the Palms of His hands” The Second Collection THIS weekend Jan. 11th is for the Building Improvement of the parish. It is impossible to be grateful and unhappy at the same time. As we count our blessings we naturally find a sense of peace and contentment. Children learn that they are called to give back something to God. They also learn that they must let go of some of their own wants. Stewardship teaches children the difference between needs and wants. Children learn to concentrate on their blessings rather than on what they want. The idea of the children’s envelopes is not to raise more money but to teach children the joys of giving and helping. Thus, it is more important that children give a quarter from their own bank than $5 from a parent’s wallet. Children’s envelopes also encourage kids to share talent - a good deed or a prayer they have written - or to write down ways they have been good stewards. The last class is in the evening on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 (Reinvesting in life...moving forward) in St. Simon Stock House from 6:30PM to 8:00PM. This retreat is an invitation to embrace a spirituality of beauty. Grounded in the foundational writings of Hans Urs von Balthasar, it explores the ability to introduce components of prayer, joy and spirituality into our lives today. We will focus on the beauty that resides in key aspects of a strong spiritual life, exploring the beauty inherent in appreciating the present moment, the beauty associated with forgiveness and the beauty that comes from gratitude. We will also explore darkness as a path to beauty, understanding that great beauty often has its origins in times of spiritual or emotional darkness. Presenter: Fr. Anthony Ciorra serves as Assistant Vice President for Mission and Catholic Identity at Fairfield University in Connecticut. He has vast experience in teaching, retreat work, preaching and formation ministries. Fee: $160 (includes a $40 non-refundable deposit) For further info or to register call 267-350-1830 or 267-350-1831 at least ten days prior to this retreat.
