February 2015 - B`nai Amoona
February 2015 Shevat/Adar 5775 Established in 1882 B’nai Amoona Sisterhood Mitzvah 2015 February 22 6:45 pm Dinner Program Cost - $30 plus minimum donation of $18 Directed by Rebecca Goldman Hosted by Andy Curry Music Directed by Dan Friedman Featuring: Jan Baron Sam Blonstein BelleAnne Curry Al Finkelstein Rob Gold Louis Goldman Sharon Nathanson Craig Neuman Barbara Opinsky FromRabbi Carnie Shalom Rose Shalom BA Chaverim! For several years now, our Shul has hosted special Shabbatot of Awareness. Initiated by our then Social Action Chair, Phyllis Cantor, and with the sage guidance of Rabbi Neal Rose, these impactful programs were intended to raise our Community’s collective consciousness about matters that all too often do not receive appropriate time or attention. Via these Shabbatot, we boldly cast spotlights on some of the most challenging issues that we face as postmodern Jews. Our past Shabbatot included discussions of the presence of Domestic Violence within the Jewish Community, the heartrending struggles of LGBT Jews to find acceptance within our established communal structures, the ongoing effort for the Conservative Movement to be even more pluralistic, and the unfortunate plight of Jews who have become marginalized - either by virtue of their own actions and behaviors or by virtue of crossing the boundaries of “propriety” established by the mainstream. In its own way, each Shabbat has helped us grow into an ever more sensitive and inclusionary Congregation - a Radically Inclusive Shul; an achievement recognized by our receipt of several international recognitions including the United Synagogue’s Solomon Schecter Award, the Ruderman Family Foundation Prize for Inclusion and most recently, the Rosh Pina Cornerstone Certification for Inclusivity. Surely, B’nai Amoona has much to be proud of! On Shabbat Morning, February 14 - as part of our regular Shabbat Morning Service -we will hold yet another unique Shabbat of Awareness. We will gather as a Kehillah Kedoshah – a Holy Congregation - and remind ourselves of how fortunate we are to live in an era that includes a Jewish State, a Homeland for our People, Medinat Yisrael. Now for some of you this may feel somewhat odd; a Shabbat of Awareness for Israel? Is this even necessary? Isn’t Israel a fact on the ground, a going concern? Does Israel’s existence actually require that we pause and acknowledge its presence and role in our lives? For me, the answer is a resounding YES! Sadly, in recent weeks in particular, I have come to realize that, for far too many in our community, the State of Israel is either something we take for granted or a matter that we simply ignore. As the Jewish State inches ever closer to the “ripe old age of 70”, the time has come to place the role of Israel squarely back on our communal agenda - in a more conscious and conscientious ways. Let me be both candid and clear. The issue here is not whether one is a political Hawk or a Dove; it is not about whether one believes in a Greater Israel or a retreat to the 1967 borders; it is not a matter of whether one is in favor of two states for two people or some kind of bi-nationality. The issue - for me – is simply this: do we care? Do we care enough about the State of Israel to see that without a Jewish Homeland we are impoverished as a People? Do we care enough to engage in the debate about what kind of country we want to see – even if we choose to live in the Diaspora? Do we care enough to raise our voices in defense of Israel when she is inappropriately and unfairly attacked and when she acts in ways that are off-putting and anathema to our Jewish and Democratic sensitivities and sensibilities? Do we care enough to invest our time, our energies and our resources in furthering the Zionist Project? My fervent and heartfelt prayer is that your response to my questions is I CARE. I care enough about the Jewish People and its future to participate in a thoughtful, honest and substantive dialogue about the State of Israel. I care enough to join in on the conversation. I care enough to be present at Shul on February 14 for our next Shabbat of Awareness when we will recommit ourselves to initiating and furthering honest and forthright discussion about our relationship with Medinat Yisrael. With blessings for an inspired month, Congregation B’nai Amoona Bulletin 2 From Rabbi Ari Kaiman Many of my B'nai Mitzvah students focus on the concept of "taking our blessings for granted." They notice that our tradition is geared to create mindfulness about the many Brachot we have in life. Torah calls us to remember daily, we are free. Torah calls us to remember that God loves us and cares about us. Since my father-in-law passed away, Emily and I have utilized the wisdom of our tradition, saying Kaddish daily to find comfort and take pause to remember David. As the son-in-law, my obligation is to help Emily have the ability to say Kaddish. Saying Kaddish daily is our "spiritual technology" that helps move through our mourning and sorrow, and helps us turn memories into deeper blessings. During Shiva the B'nai Amoona community comes to the home of the mourner so he or she can easily say Kaddish. After Shiva, saying Kaddish daily becomes more complicated. It's a greater sacrifice, as now the Minyan does not come to you, but you must search out and find a Minyan. This can be a challenge for anyone, and as we have learned, it is exceptionally difficult to find even the 30 minutes in the evening to get away from the responsibilities of 4 preschool age children. Still, most nights, Emily is able to get to the Minyan and back. (Partly that is due to another spiritual technology of choosing to live as close to the synagogue as possible.) For months, we had been planning a family reunion in Florida and a return to Israel for a close friend's wedding. It was a difficult decision to follow through. In part, we chose to go because my side of the family would be a Minyan ourselves. Each night in Florida we gathered in our hotel room and prayed together. Appreciating all of our loved ones in this world, watching my children sing "Tum Balalaika" with their great-grandparents was a priceless experience. I'm not sure we would have gone if Emily would not have been able to say Kaddish. We expected that finding a place for Emily to say Kaddish would be easy. Indeed, on Shabbat and when the weather was nice, we were able to pray in our Jerusalem communities with our close friends. But on a snowy day in Jerusalem, on the semester breaks of the Conservative Yeshiva, Pardes, and Machon Schechter, we could find no egalitarian Minyan in Jerusalem for Emily to say Kaddish. The only options were Minyanim that Emily risked glares and stares if she were to raise her voice. It’s not that there are no options, but finding one proved a challenge too great. Yesterday, I received an email thanking B'nai Amoona for making a Minyan, despite the heavy snow. The commitment of our community to our daily Minyan is exceptional. We should never take our Minyan for granted. It is a place of immense comfort, of mindfulness and community. If you are looking for a daily space to be mindful, B'nai Amoona has it already. If you are a Minyanaire, thank you. If you care about keeping our Minyan strong and are not yet a Minyanaire, please consider joining. Emily and I enjoyed this adventure in Jerusalem, our spiritual home base. We are also glad to be home in our beloved community of B'nai Amoona. Balancing spending time with family and work responsibilities and the time we can give ourselves to the spiritual technology of praying in a community is an equation that changes with new circumstances. Whatever your circumstances are, B’nai Amoona has an amazing resource in our Minyan. Please consider spending some time with us there. Carnie Ari Rabbi Carnie Shalom Rose The Rabbi Bernard Lipnick Senior Rabbinic Chair 314-576-9990 x105 [email protected] Rabbi Ari Kaiman 314-576-9990 x136 [email protected] February 2015 February 2015 3 Congregation B’nai Amoona Bulletin Cantorial Notes The party is about to begin! Are you ready to be right in the middle of it? Purim arrives the evening of Wednesday March 4 and continues March 5. If you have ever thought about exploring the possibility of chanting Megillat Esther, now is the time! No other scroll gives us the chance to chant with the kind of crazy energy we can bring to the Purim story. Please be in touch with me so I can guide you along. We don’t have to wait until Purim to celebrate. Be a part of the celebration on Shabbat morning February 14 during B’nai Amoona’s own Israel Shabbat with activities, discussions, and music. Our Davening will be infused and enhanced with Israeli melodies. We can never forget the kind of determination and drive and sacrifice that brought us to this incredible point in history. When we remember that, we also remember how much work we still have to do for Eretz Yisrael and also how much we have to celebrate every single day. As the Zionist visionary, Theodore Herzl said, “If you will it, it is no dream.” Today Israel is not just a dream! It is a dream come true! Come celebrate, dream, and continue the work. Our own Social Action Committee chair, Laura Goldmeier, has also been working toward some dreams for our community. One of her dreams is about to become reality as Congregation B’nai Amoona partners with New Sunny Mount Baptist Church with special guest flutist, Don Hulbert, for an afternoon of music on April 12. Many of you may remember our musical event a few years ago with another St. Louis Church choir and renowned gospel singer Diana Solomon-Glover. I’m still hearing from the adults and teens involved about what an impression it made on them. May this concert be an opportunity for communities to come together to imagine what is possible when we support one another, when we listen, when we do the hard work side by side. So much is possible. So much is possible for St. Louis, for the land of Israel, for the Jewish people collectively and individually. We can make it a reality. Herzl’s words return to us, “If you will it, it is no dream.” Tu B'Shevat Seder The New Year of the Trees Join Rabbi Kaiman on Tuesday, February 3, at 6:15pm for Ma’ariv followed by aTu B’ShevatSeder. This Seder is designed for adults and teens. We will sample delicious fruits, and nuts, wine and grape juice, and appreciate the wonder of Creation. Tu B’Shevat, the 15th day of Shevat, is described in the Mishnah as the New Year of the Trees, one of four New Years on the Jewish calendar. The mystical custom is to have a Seder on Tu’B’Shevat which resembles the Pesach Seder. Modern versions of a Seder have been written emphasizing the environment and ties to agriculture in Israel. It is customary to make the Shehecheyanu over a fruit that one has not eaten in the last year. Don’t miss this unique opportunity! Upcoming Services February 4 Tu B’Shevat February 7 Parashat Yitro Bat Mitzvah of Sophia Fredman Daughter of Andy and Katy Fredman This Seder is sponsored by the Shapiro, Kalman, and Gersten Families in memory of Yana Shapiro, to honor the strong roots that she has provided us. For one thing, familiarity can breed contempt, or at least disinterest. The electronics drive and durable medical goods drive have decreasing donations, but they are still happy with the quality of the collections. Our holiday wrap for Carver House may have had less presents than prior years, but the number of people wrapping and the enthusiasm was great! We also had Roz Glaser back with us, who is now "unretired" and working on the wrap after a kidney transplant. I hope to keep introducing new projects, so look for a chance to donate time to homeless kids at Epworth Center, B'nai Amoona Day for the food pantry. Already on the calendar is a concert to bridge our communities with the New Sunny Mount Baptist Church in north St. Louis. Please plan to join us for this experience with Cantor Nathanson on Sunday, April 12. Let me know what projects you would like to see in the future. From the President Shalom to my B'nai Amoona Family! Since members are invited to attend any and all Board of Trustees meetings, I wanted to alert everyone that we made a few changes from the original schedule we published way back last summer. Below is an updated list of our remaining Board meetings. In addition, now would be a great time to mark your calendars for the annual Congregational meeting where we vote for the new board members and slate of officers as well as hear a State of the Shul address. Early Childhood Happenings February is such a great month at the ECC even though it is chilly. We will explore all aspects of the celebration of trees for Tu B’Shevat. The celebration of trees lends itself so well to not only investigation of the actual parts of tree, observation by using all of our senses, and learning special blessings but goes way beyond as we explore how we care for the earth, help animals, and share our love for Israel through all of our domains such as science, math, art, music, movement, drama and language arts. Whether you are an infant or a 5 year old, Tu B’Shevat is a wonderful connection to nature, Earth and Israel. Tu B’Shevat is followed by another great celebration; Purim. Purim is a fabulous reminder of why preschoolers need pretend play. Young children learn by imagining and doing. The process of pretending builds skills in many essential developmental skill areas including social and emotional, language, and thinking. From infant to age 5, children love the repetition of hearing the story of Esther, making costumes, enacting the story, sharing in the making and eating of Hamantaschen, participating in making Shaloach Manot and delivering them to those in need as well as to those we love, building Shushan and the castle, and of course the carnival! The halls will be full of chaos as we celebrate and let’s not forget the carnival on March 1! Also, please save the date for our next Shabbat B'Yachad on March 20! 3 ways to place your order: 1. Stop by the Pardes office and talk to Ellen 2. B’nai Amoona USY presents a Yes, it’s Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1st. Sure, you’re probably reading this the week before, but that’s no problem. Just grab your Tefillin and be at Minyan at 8:30 am, and Men’s Club will gladly get you all strapped up and ready-to-go. If you don’t have your own, come anyway. We have lots of extra sets, and you can borrow mine in a pinch. We particularly look forward to having the 6th Grade MKLC students join us with their parents to get their first taste of a full Tefillin experience! I had the chance to work more closely with these kids, talking and learning right along with them, than ever before. It was amazing to see what a great class they are and what terrific, talented and dedicated teachers they have. The Wrap will be followed by a delicious brunch buffet for all participants. 10 Adar 5775 Men’s Club will also have a Hearing Men’s Voices session on February 25th. Never been? Why not? It is open to all men (you don’t have to be a club member). We start at 8:00 pm and dive right into our topic for the month. There will be snacks and drinks and we’ll just talk until most of us realize that we might be risking ‘domestic trouble’. Do it. Mark your calendar. Plan to join us. Call or write me if you have questions. WOLFF AUDITORIUM Next Month’s Previews Men’s Club is thrilled to announce our 2015 Man of the Year & Youth of the Year. We will be honoring them at our Annual Luncheon on March 15, at B'nai Amoona the Sunday following our Men’s Club Shabbat, along with the Kol Rinah Men’s Club recipients of these awards. Dr. Bruce Frank ought to be known to everyone at B’nai Amoona. Past President of Men’s Club, check. All-around Mensch, proud father and grandfather, check. Handsome, charming, and witty paragon of Jewish manhood… well, I am ready to make that case to anyone who needs convincing! To sponsor a booth or purchase raffle tickets please contact Jodi Antell or Barbara Shechter at 314-576-9990 Jonathan Samuels will also be recognized as our Youth of the Year for 2015. I’ve had the pleasure of learning quite a bit about this Parkway Central Senior in the past month. It is immediately clear why this young man has the respect and support of the synagogue’s education and youth leadership. He is involved in his secular and Jewish learning at the very highest levels, and has the gift for leading-by-example and bringing out the best in others. We’ll all get to see some of that when we make his presentation!
