It is hard to imagine, but in just a few short weeks, we will draw our 2015-16 program year to a close. Our synagogue calendar is always busy. However, as we ready ourselves for the ceremonies and celebrations that mark the conclusion of another academic cycle, we move from “busy” to “frenetic and frenzied”. Though I think of my beloved teacher Rabbi Lipnick quite often, it is especially at this hectic time of the year that I recall his unique joie de vivre - zest for life. Whenever he would hear someone Kvetch about the many festivities that dot our communal calendars, he would remind us that what we want and need are vibrant, active synagogues. “Flat line means you are dead! The more action we have in the Shul, the better off we are!” It is with Rabbi’s inimitable spirit in mind that I extend a warm invitation to all members of the B’nai Amoona Family to join us in the coming weeks. Join us and feel the love and support, the vitality and vivacity, which typify our special Kehillah Kedoshah, our holy community. Of course, year’s end also brings with it moments of transition. This summer, we will bid farewell to two beloved members of our community: On June 18th, during Shabbat Morning Services, we will acknowledge and thank our Director of Lifelong Learning, Jennifer Newfeld, for her many years of dedicated service to B’nai Amoona. Jennifer’s time with us has been marked by many achievements, successes, awards and accolades. She has helped us think through the “big issues” and has set us on a course for even greater triumphs in the years ahead. We have been enriched by her knowledge and prodigious skills and we will miss her, Nathan, and Gavi immensely. St. Louis’ loss is surely Maryland’s gain! Please make every effort to be with us on June 18th! On Shabbat morning July 2nd, we will host a special send-off for our much loved Assistant Rabbi, Ari Kaiman. Rabbi Kaiman’s years at B’nai Amoona have been filled with creativity, innovation, deep respect for the history of our Shul, and a palpable Ahavat HaBriot - love for all those who entered the many different doorways of our community. Reb Ari has brought wonderful spirit, energy, and enthusiasm to his Avodat HaKodesh, holy service, and as he, Emily and the kids prepare to leave their first pulpit, we can say with certainty that their future in Atlanta is bright. We will miss them terribly, but know that we will remain connected and continue to Shep Naches from the many successes that will be theirs in the coming years. Tzetchem LeShalom - journey out in peace and we look forward to seeing you during your visits to St. Louis! July 2nd will surely be a day filled with intense emotion! I began by mentioning our teacher, Rabbi Lipnick. So allow me to conclude by sharing a piece of Torah that he taught me before departing for one of his final Cruise Ship Rabbi Gigs. In the third paragraph of the Shema, we find the Torah’s command that we are to affix Tzizit to the corners of our garments. The commandment is then punctuated by the Hebrew word, LeDorotam. This word can be translated in a number of different ways. It can mean that this command is operative “in every generation - forever”. However, LeDorotam can also mean that the Mitzvah itself, the placing of fringes in the corners of our garments, creates our perpetuity and eternity. In thinking about the roles that both Jennifer and Rabbi Ari have filled during their time with us, I can think of no better way to describe their impact than as LeDorotam. Their efforts not only perpetuated that which predated them, but also catalyzed what will follow them. Each – in her/his own unique way - has made an indelible and enduring impression upon our congregation. We who have been the beneficiaries of their teachings and talents will not only never forget them and their good works, but also know that they have given impetus and uplift to all that will follow long after their departure from our midst! Again, I hope to see many of you in the coming weeks and especially on June 18th and July 2nd! With blessings for a meaningful end to an amazing year, Carnie Rabbi Carnie Shalom Rose The Rabbi Bernard Lipnick Senior Rabbinic Chair 314-576-9990 x105 [email protected] Congregation B’nai Amoona Bulletin 2 June/July 2016 From Rabbi Ari Kaiman I wrote my first synagogue bulletin article for this publication in the summer of 2008. I’m certain that when I wrote it, I had no idea how important the ideas contained in it would be for me. In this, my last article as the Assistant Rabbi of B’nai Amoona, I’d like to reflect on how far I have come, and how I grateful I am to you all for walking with me on this journey. In that first article, I began with gratitude to the whole B’nai Amoona community, and in particular to Rabbi Lipnick Z"L and Rabbi Rose for the opportunity to be the very first Rabbi Bernard Lipnick Rabbinic Intern. I quickly moved to inviting the whole congregation to be my teacher as I began the internship. The way I would learn from you was through your stories. I then shared a story of my own, a magical story my father used to tell me about Elsie the Flying Cow. I connected the story to Parashat Balak, and the incident of the talking donkey. I asked the question – if we believe in the talking donkey in the Parasha as much as we believe in Elsie the Flying Cow, then how can we take any of Torah seriously. The answer I offered to that question ended up being a core part of my theology. Namely, that the measure of Divinity in any text, is its ability to inspire us to create. In this way, our Torah is the most Divine because it has inspired countless creation, and somehow continues to inspire creativity every single day. I wrote my senior thesis on this idea. I ended that first bulletin article by inviting you once again to share your unique Torah with me – your creativity, your story. You have given me stories upon stories that inspire me. B’nai Amoona is my Torah. I have learned much from my teachers, more from my colleagues, and most from my students. I will always think of Rabbi Lipnick Z"L as my teacher. From the very beginning, he inspired me with his incredible life story. He believed in me, and so helped me believe in myself. I find myself asking the question of what he would do in a given situation often. I enjoy visiting him in my memory and am grateful to have his Torah in my life. What a blessing that I have had the opportunity to work with such a diverse and talented Klei Kodesh and staff! I wrote a very long “ode to the staff ” and then decided to share most of it with them privately. Suffice to say, every single one of our staff members is superlative. The B’nai Amoona staff strives for excellence and we supported each other to connect Jews to Judaism. They have all taught me incredible Torah. The Klei Kodesh are mentors and teachers to me. I am inspired every day by the way they give their time and energy for every member of B’nai Amoona. They taught me how to pay attention to every detail, making sure that nothing falls through the cracks. I am a better Rabbi, and a better person because of the Torah shared by working with Rabbi Davidson, Cantor Sharon, and Rabbi Rose. Eight years after beginning my professional career at B’nai Amoona, I find that I have acquired incredible Torah through the many opportunities this community offered. I have acquired the Torah of learning with you in regular classes – on Prayer, Midrash, Torah Study and countless other sessions. I have acquired the Torah of our community, having opportunities to get to know St. Louis through your eyes. I’ve travelled through the neighborhoods, spoken about the issues that exists in our communities, and found partnership with B’nai Amoona to make this a better community to live in. Most importantly, I have acquired the Torah of family by sharing the most important moments of life with you. You have blessed me to be present when life comes into the world, when beloved family members leave the world, and every moment in between. I have witnessed babies become kids, kids become teenagers, and shed tears with you as these kids go off to college. I’ve even been around long enough to see some of them come home and begin professional lives in St. Louis. We have celebrated the birth of my children, and the passing of my beloved father and grandfather in-law. After all of the Torah you have taught me, I feel ready to share what I have learned as a Senior Rabbi. I will miss B’nai Amoona dearly, but I am sure that our paths will cross many times. There is an open invitation in Atlanta for all of you. I look forward to more chapters in this greatest Torah of life. Thank you all for being the most important chapter in the Torah of my life to date. With love, FAREWELL SHABBAT - JULY 2 Come join us to celebrate Shabbat and say farewell to Rabbi Kaiman as he concludes his sacred service to B'nai Amoona as Assistant Rabbi and moves to Atlanta. June/July 2016 Ari Rabbi Ari Kaiman 314-576-9990 x136 [email protected] 3 Congregation B’nai Amoona Bulletin Cantorial Notes Shabbat Zimrah, our summer Shabbat of Song is June 25. This is a highly participatory melody-filled Shabbat morning service full of beauty. We will have three opportunities ahead of time to sit together to become familiar with the melodies and make some decisions as a group about aspects of the singing. If you have any questions please be in touch with me. And if you need some extra help with the music I am happy to provide that so that when you come to Shul, you can sit in the congregation and let yourself be carried away by the melodies, in prayerful song with your friends and family. So many of us look forward to these musical Shabbatot and understand that each person in the room adds energy and spirituality to the experience. I hope you will add your voice, your energy, and your spirit. Please join us for a learning sessions on June 18 the Guller Chapel approximately 30 minutes after the end of morning services. Announcing our newest members of the Yad Squad! We are very proud of Noah Englander, Rachel Friedman, Rina Gersten, Jessie Goldberg, Rachel Krug, Daniel Lev, Levi Rose, Noa Rose, Zakai Rose and Seth Wallerstein who fulfilled the requirements to become members of the Yad Squad. The Yad Squad was conceived by Ed and Rita Balk to encourage our teenagers to read Torah and lead Davening. These students have met or surpassed the required amount of participation. Mazel Tov to all of our new inductees, and returning members! Sharon Hazzan Sharon Nathanson 314-576-9990 x104 [email protected] Shabbat Zimrah MUSIC AND MY FATHER - A Special Memorial For Meyer Kahan, my dad, music was like breathing. He turned to it for feeling, for beauty, for profundity and for joy. These aspects of music are some of what his life brought to mine and to others. When I was in mourning, I bought old CDs of operas, went through Richard Tucker’s Met broadcasts as well as his cantorial music, even found Moishe Oisher on the internet – and listening to all of this was like bringing my dad back into the house. He was the music of our family. And he was part of the music of this shule. When he was a boy he was very gifted on the violin. When he was a little older, Hazzan Gowseiow realized he also had a voice and recruited him into the B’nai Amoona choir. When B’nai Amoona needed another Hazzan to handle the auxiliary service, Rabbi Lipnick and Hazzan Lissek asked my father. When they needed someone to sing the Pesuki D’Zimrah on Shabbos, he was it. The designated hitter. He always thought, and conveyed with great gusto and conviction, that the Hazzan was the heart of the service. The “Tam,” as we say in Yiddish. He would have loved Shabbat Zimrah. So I know of no better way to remember him, or to honor and thank him. His choices in music were both eclectic and conventional. Mozart just “does something to me,” he once said, putting his hand near his heart. He loved the Chazzonim – Yossele Rosenblatt, Ben Zion Miller, Moishe Oisher, Joseph Malovany. But he also loved the classical opera singers, Pavarotti, Jussi Bjorling, Leonard Warren. When he and I would attend Congregation B’nai Amoona Bulletin 4 June/July 2016 the New York Philharmonic, he would whisper to me during the concert, to look for this and that – “listen to the winds,” – and make me aware of things I’d never hear by myself. He told me he fell in love with opera one afternoon while inadvertently turning on a Met broadcast around 1930 and hearing Lili Pons sing “Lucia d’Lammermoor.” The idea for honoring him each year around the time of his Yahrzeit [12 Sivan] came one Saturday morning in February 2015, when I turned on the B’nai Amoona Shul Cast and heard Hazzan Nathanson singing Shabbat Shirah in memory of her mother. I felt that it was almost prophetic that I had tuned into this, the Sabbath of Song. And I wrote to Rabbi Rose, who suggested we sponsor such a similar Shabbat in his name. And so we do this for the second straight year. My father’s voice, his person, and his life had a sweetness to them that no one can teach. He had a grace, a lightness, an inner strength and a Jewish faith that were both remarkable and unusual. “These are the qualities,” as the great novelist Virginia Woolf said of her father, “that make him, after all these years, unforgettable.” He was a great father. We were very lucky to have him, and today, again, we are fortunate to remember him. Alav HaShalom. It has been an honor, privilege and pleasure to serve as the President of this amazing/ august Congregation for the past 3 years! In the last few weeks, several people have approached me and said things like: “Are you counting down the days?” “Only xxx weeks left!” “Bet you can’t wait to be done with this gig?!” Honestly, I have mixed emotions about my Presidency being over. I am going to miss many aspects of the presidency and am tremendously proud of the teamwork that typified the work of the Executive Team and Board over these last few years. I am proud that during each year of my term we had people self-nominating to be involved in the lay leadership of our Shul. We implemented many new and necessary policies and procedures in both the lay and professional arenas. We transitioned successfully through several key changes in personnel including the arrival of our Controller, Larry Goldman, our Early Childhood Director, Anita Kraus and our Mashgiach, Jon Hoffman. We updated our Investment Policy Statement to help us get more income from our endowments without having to dip into the corpus of those funds. Our budget committee and staff worked incredibly hard, cutting wherever they could, to help us stay fiscally responsible. As a result, we were able pass on cost savings to you, our congregants, and will not be increasing dues this coming year. We gave away more scholarships than ever enabling many more children to attend our Early Childhood Center, Religious School, Youth Group activities, Camps, Youth Leadership Training and Israel Programs. We have seen so much generosity and so many creative initiatives over the past few years. These initiatives include: the Rabbi Lipnick NextGen Leadership Program which helps send teens on short term national and international trips; the Gallant and Ferdman Funds, which enable adults who never became B’nai Mitzvah, the opportunity to do so; and Educational Initiatives like the Dr. Alex Memorial Lecture, the Jick Kallah, the Margul Fund, the Yad Sqaud, Shabbat Shirah, Shabbat Zimrah, etc... which reach out to our Congregants via different avenues enabling them to learn in whatever ways they want to participate. Our Congregants continue to grow as we Expand our Tent, being ever more inclusive of everyone, including those with physical disabilities and learning differences. We are weaving everyone into the fabric of our B’nai Amoona family so no one feels like a stray thread. We are now talking about issues and tackling challenges that would have been taboo in the past including our stance on issues such as intermarriage and patrilineal dissent. There are exciting things on the horizon as we enter into a Capital Campaign to take care of our deferred maintenance and update our building. We are embarking on a new era with this month’s arrival of our Director of Religious Education, Avital Ostfield, and Rabbi Josef Davidson joining our Klei Kodesh Team on a full time basis. We are saddened to be saying goodbye to 2 wonderful professionals who have been with us for quite some time. We all wish both Rabbi Ari Kaiman and Jennifer Newfeld, and their families, the best of luck as they pursue the next steps in their careers. We are grateful for all you have shared with us over these last few years. I know our incoming President, Andy Oberman, and his team of lay leaders will continue taking our Shul to higher heights into the future. I can’t thank you enough for the support and confidence you have shown me and for allowing me to serve our Kehillah over these past few years. I look forward to many more years of involvement in the life of our community and to seeing you all in Shul in the near future. Again, Todah Rabbah! Like that radio station, B’nai Amoona is supported by its members, and because of that, has survived over 130 years! to everyone and guide you through the prayers. Find two new joys in one: Come to Minyan and listen to KDHX, 88.1 on the way (except on Shabbat of course). Bob Rosenfield Co-Chair, Minyanaires [email protected] 314-308-1784 We are now asking for more, just a little bit more of your time. Morning Minyan 7:00 am Monday - Friday 9:00 am Sunday and Secular Holidays 9:00 am Shabbat Service (9:30 am Childcare) We are one of a few Conservative synagogues around the world to have 2 daily Minyanim at which people can honor their departed loved ones, or come to pray, or just be part of the community. Personally, I come for the community and the camaraderie (I pray in my own way). What I have learned in my re-Jew-vination at BA is that no matter what you believe; there is God, no God, God in you, in nature, or just in “being”, we are all one at B’nai Amoona. So what we need is for YOU to donate 30 minutes a day, week, or month and commit to come to a Minyan. Help build a better Jewish community, and a better B’nai Amoona community. Evening Minyan 6:15 pm Sunday through Thursday 6:00 pm Friday Saturday Evening Minyan changes monthly Month of June - 7:30 p.m. Major Secular Holidays - Evening Minyan (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Day & Eve, Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day) 4:00 pm For more information about Minyan times and days, and to see the names of your friends already participating in Minyans, look at the Minyanaire board outside the Guller Chapel. See which Minyan they come to and join that one, or join any one of them and make new friends, like my wife Barbara and I did (Monday at 6:15 pm). SPONSOR A KIDDUSH Have a favorite Kiddush item? Interested in seeing a new addition at a B'nai Amoona Kiddush? You don’t have to know anything to be in a Minyan. Like me, I knew nothing; not even what all those squiggly letters meant! Thank goodness the Siddur has English and Hebrew transliteration, and that Minyaniares were there to help me learn. People I did not know! OY, who knew? Please consider sponsoring an upcoming Kiddush! Contact Barbara Shechter at 314-576-9990 x126 or [email protected] My name is Bob Rosenfield, who along with Laura Shapiro, are the co-chairs of the Minyanaires. The Torah starts and ends with the heart. If you wrap the first and last word of the Torah together you get the word LEV, heart. BAUSY always starts and ends with heart. 2. The torah is the center and the future of Judaism, just like in many ways BAUSY is the center and the future of B’nai Amoona. 3. There is lots of drama in the Torah and at times there is lots of drama in BAUSY. 4. Although Torah is the center of Judaism, if we only had Torah and not Rabbinic Judaism, we would not really be able to practice Judaism. Just like even through BAUSY is the center of your high school life (and hopefully you make lifelong friends and learn lifelong lessons here) you also will eventually go beyond your BAUSY experiences. 5. We return to the Torah each week, year after year. Just like you are all involved in BAUSY on a weekly basis for many years. 6. The torah teaches us values and life lessons just as BAUSY teaches values and lifelessons. 7. The Torah’s central character is a larger than life figure, Moses, just like BAUSY’s leader, Andy is a larger than life character. If only Andy could find something that gave him a direct connection to God. Thank you BAUSY. I will always cherish the time I spent watching BAUSY achieve amazing things and the incredible teens I have had the opportunity to get to know. If any of you end up in the DC area for college, work, or just a trip, please look me up and come visit or ask for a job! I wish you all continued success, fun and enjoyment. You are all lucky to be able to say that BAUSY will always hold a place in your heart. However, these Tallitot are full of potential. They sit there waiting for the moment someone walks up to the rack, picks one out, envelopes themselves in it for a silent moment and then whispers the Brachah. All of this is done in preparation for a spiritual and communal religious experience. The Tallit helps bring the individual’s potential into the religious experience, into the conversation with God and one’s community.” I also spoke about the potential we all bring to the education process; “The potential of the teachers, families, and students. The potential of the synagogue staff and Klei Kodesh. My potential. All of our potential will swirl and mix together, allowing each of us to envelope ourselves, saying a Brachah – “Praised are you Adonai our God, who rules the universe, instilling in us the holiness of Mitzvot by commanding us to study words of Torah.” Eight years later, as I reflect back, I am amazed with the potential we turned into amazing experiences, awesome learning, and wonderful community. Trying to say good-bye is no easy task. The list of accomplishments is too long; the lives touched, the friendships formed, the lessons learned and the magical moments we shared. Wow, it’s been an awesome eight years! I am truly thankful for the opportunity to redesign the educational programs at B’nai Amooona: the experience of having worked with the Early Childhood Center, Religious School, Summer Camps, Youth Groups, Inclusion efforts, and Adult Education. Thank you to all the partners who helped me along the way, the Men’s Club and Sisterhood, the synagogue staff and Klei Kodesh, the educators and teachers, the VPs of Pardes and the chairs of the various committees, the parents and especially all the students. In the Talmud, referencing the laws of Judaism it says, “Lo Ba-Shamayim He” - It is not in Heaven. Judaism does not live in Heaven. It does not rest only with God. Judaism is found within community, within learning, within the work I have been privileged to do here each and every day for the past eight years. Thank you for allowing me to continue my growth as an educator for the past eight years. Please stay in touch. My new email is [email protected]. And if you find yourself in the DC area, please look up Nathan, Gavi and me – we would love to see you. Congregation B’nai Amoona Bulletin 16 June/July 2016 This month Sisterhood Spotlights some of our reliable and diligent executive board members with the questions: What is your favorite summertime St. Louis activity? What are you reading this summer? Debbie Eidelman, Membership Secretary: My favorite St. Louis summer activities are watching my son's baseball games, going to the movies with my husband and celebrating my birthday with my girlfriends! This summer I look forward to helping out with the Maccabi games and enjoying my son's last summer baseball season as he gets ready to go to college in the fall. My favorite writers are Jeffrey Archer and Danielle Steel. I have read many of their books in English and Spanish! Marcia Lyons, Corresponding Secretary: My favorite summer activity is attending St Louis Cardinal Baseball games. I am a huge fan! My summer reading includes: The Best Boy in the United States of America by Ron Wolfson, The Red Tent by Anita Diamants & The Devil in Jerusalem by Naomi Ragen. The latter 2 books have been on my "must read" list for a long time. Rachael Peters, Social Media My favorite thing to do in St. Louis in the summertime is to spend time with my kids outside playing, swimming, gardening, or hanging out with friends. Because I have three young children, I will be reading mostly children’s books! Lisa Samis, Communications Secretary This summer we will do a little traveling. We'll see the out of town family and we're going to explore Door County, Wisconsin for the first time. Very late this summer I have another high school reunion to attend. I'm reading the Blessing of a Skinned Knee by Wendy Mogel. I have several books on my Kindle to get to. Sisterhood partnered with Hadassah for a delightful evening at the History Museum touring the Little Black Dress Exhibit. B’nai Amoona Sisterhood Membership Brunch November 6, 2016 Torah Fund Brunch December 4, 2016 Mitzvah March 19, 2017 Amy Amy Abramson, President [email protected] June/July 2016 17 Congregation B’nai Amoona Bulletin Men's Club As I write this article I am reviewing the list of what Men’s Club has done over the past year, and I have to admit that I’m a bit stunned: Bookmarks and Scotch in the Sukkah, Demolition Ball and Chanukah Dinner, Build-A-Pair, Men’s Club Shabbat and World Wide Wrap. Then Man of the Year/Youth of the Year Banquet, Yom Ha Shoah Candle distribution, Mother’s Day Brunch, and finally our regional FJMC/Men’s Club retreat. A busy year was had by all! Putting all of these varied events into context, I would claim that everything Men’s Club does can be reflected in just a few major themes: Building Jewish relationship, Building Jewish Leadership, and Building Jewish Life. What do I mean? Let me try to explain. Building Jewish relationship Every event that we do, from prayer services to fund raisers, we do as a group. We don’t hire folks to do the work, we do it together. We work together, we play together, and we pray together - sometimes with our spouses, sometimes with our families, but always together. In a world that can be isolating, we provide community within a Jewish context. Building Jewish leadership Every event we put on is led by a Men’s Club member. Over half our events this year were led or co-led members who were leading an event for the first time. It is no fluke that former Men’s Club officers led this year’s B’nai Amoona Bingo fundraiser and its Scholarship Committee, and it is also true that Men’s Club volunteers were called upon time and again to help at different B’nai Amoona events. Leadership is grown and Men’s Club provides fertile ground. Building Jewish Life If you’re never exposed to Jewish practices, why would you ever adopt them? And if those practice are not made accessible and meaningful to you, why would you ever even try? Men’s Club exposes men, women and children to Jewish Practice through our Men’s Club Shabbat, World Wide Wrap, Tefillin demonstrations for Bar/Bat Mitzvah Classes, our Saint Louis ‘card’, our participation in the Ritual Fair and in the support we provide that allows attendance at Camps, Israel Programs, and the 10th Grade Trip. So that’s what Men’s Club does. We Build Jewish Relationship, Jewish Leadership, and Jewish Life. Come and join us as we plan for our next successful year.
