Our Mission
The Emily K Center, a nonprofit organization in Durham, was established in 2006 and named in honor
of Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s mother. The Center’s K to College Model serves academically focused,
low-income students in out-of-school programming designed to help them achieve in school, gain entry
to college, and break the cycle of poverty in their families.
Our mission is to inspire students to dream big, strive for academic excellence, act with character and
purpose, and reach their highest potential as citizen leaders. In addition to offering the K to College
Model, the Center serves nearly 1,500 students and community members monthly through the use of the
Center’s multipurpose rooms, gymnasium, and stage.

Message from our leadership
A Message from Our Leadership
“Building Scholars — Changing Lives” communicates nicely what the Emily
Krzyzewski Center has grown into since welcoming our first K to College
students and collaborative partners in 2006. The Center “turned five years
old” in February and we took that opportunity to celebrate and reflect on
what we have accomplished and need to accomplish as an organization.
We had a celebration, at which we were joined by students, parents, staff,
volunteers, and community partners. We also asked ourselves whether
the Center is indeed being successful in offering life-changing programs
for students, as well as serving as a resource for the broader Durham
community. As an important partner to us, you can be assured that the
honest answer was a resounding “yes!”
Our K to College Model continued to grow purposefully this year, serving
109 students from first to 11th grade. These students represented 32
schools throughout Durham. Some of the students were children who have
been enrolled since we first opened the doors to the Center and offered
the Pioneer Scholars program, while others were young people who sought
out the support of the Scholars to College program as they took on the
challenges of a rigorous high school curriculum. What the students all
share is the dream of going to college, something felt most vividly by the
juniors as they drafted resumes, explored the specifics of financial aid
options, and identified colleges that they will apply to as seniors.
Monthly, 1,500 children, young adults, and community members used
the Center as a resource to learn, convene, and serve. Community-based
partners were welcomed in to host special events such as the Kramden
Institute’s Geek-A-Thon and the Durham Symphony Orchestra’s spring
concert. Immaculata Catholic School and Healthy Start Academy continued
to use the gymnasium daily for their physical education classes, while
civic-focused groups like the Durham Rotary Club and Public Allies used
our meeting rooms to conduct their business. Use of the gym continued
to expand, serving as a home court for the Durham Police Department’s
basketball team and a recreational opportunity for our neighbors from
the Burch Avenue Neighborhood Association. Community outreach like
this reflects our commitment to the Durham community and assures that the
Center is being fully utilized.
Next year, our first seniors will graduate from the Scholars to College
program and matriculate into college. We will also discover more ways to
partner with the Durham community to use the Center as a resource. On
behalf of the Emily Krzyzewski Center, thank you for your kind support,
your belief in the value of our work, and your confidence in us to deliver on
that commitment. We hope you will continue to partner with us in building
scholars and changing lives!

Our students will have success in college because they are prepared

In addition to the K to College Model, the Center facilitated the work of 42 other nonprofits and businesses that utilized
the multipurpose rooms, gymnasium, and stage to further their impact on Durham. These partners used the Center to
directly serve families, coordinate their own work, and host special events.

We Welcome your Support
We rely on the contributions of community members to help the Center provide life-changing opportunities to students.
With your continued support we can do even more! Please join us as a volunteer, a donor, or an advocate in the community.
For more information about how to get involved, email [email protected] or call 919-680-0308.
VOLUNTEER
In 2010–11 more than 140 individual volunteers collectively
invested 3,500 hours at the Center as they tutored, served
as receptionists, or assisted with special events and projects.
These volunteers provided valuable support to our students
and staff, minimizing costs and creating a new cadre of
informed advocates in the community.
GIVE
The Center introduced two new annual fundraising events in
2010–11: Inside Duke Basketball and the Mother’s Day Ball.
Together these two events raised more than $200,000 and
allowed 350 happy guests to get to know the Center’s mission.
ADVOCATE
Nearly 1,000 individuals engaged in presentations and tours
of our K to College programs in 2010–11. It is our hope that
they become enthusiastic and knowledgeable advocates
for the Emily K Center.
