Dear Parents and Friends of St. Mary School:
Soon another school year will begin here at St. Mary. We are looking forward to the promise and
new beginning of this school year.
Our Principal, Diane Simonaitis, has assembled an impressive roster of 27 fully-certified and
dedicated teachers for our school. Most of these teachers hold master’s degrees. The universities and
colleges that prepared them for teaching form a distinguished list. Among them are: Dominican U.,
Marquette, Northwestern, Loyola, Carnegie-Mellon, St. Xavier, Benedictine, U of Illinois, National-Louis, and many
others.
The academic excellence, for which St. Mary School is known, continues. The school itself manifests a strong base of
traditions and moral values of our Catholic Faith.
Our children thrive in the safe and nurturing environment of St. Mary, where they are challenged by the gift of the
freedom-to-achieve, that is so vital in the 21st century. Our caring teachers give St. Mary students’ individual attention
in a place where Catholic Tradition and the best of contemporary thought meet.
The St. Mary Early Childhood Program (P – 1st) is an important part of the curriculum, as well as an asset to the entire
Riverside community. Young children are cared for by conscientious, well-trained staff. Activities and learning
experiences suitable to their age are part of the daily routine. St. Mary also provides before and after school care for
those who need these services.
In addition to her outstanding background as an educator, Principal Simonaitis is highly regarded as a skilled mentor
for both new and experienced teachers; she understands that by creating a supportive learning environment, both
students and teachers are enriched. I am very proud of our Principal, the staff she has brought together, and the
positive energy that is evident in our school.
There will be some new faces among the faculty this fall. We welcome them especially to St. Mary.
As we begin “The Year of Strong Catholic Parents” throughout the Archdiocese, we salute you for selecting St. Mary
School for your children’s education. You have chosen well: a Faith-filled community, marked by academic
excellence; a first-rate education, with strong preparation for life in terms of character development, leadership skills,
and moral values.
This year also marks the start of the campaign “To Teach Who Christ Is,” aimed at the continued support of fine
quality Catholic schools and individual parish needs. Cardinal George envisions our school, as well as Catholic
schools throughout the Archdiocese, as “an ever more vibrant place.”
Our commitment goes on. It promises to be an exciting year at St. Mary School!
Christ’s Peace and Love,
Father Thomas May
Pastor - St. Mary Riverside
The LAST Parish Intake Meeting will be held this
Wednesday, August 14 at 7:30 pm in the Oak Room.
We need your input with assessing our current and long term needs for offices and meeting space. We
also need to hear how our current situation works for you and the larger community. The evening is not
envisioned as a ‘problem solving’ meeting but an assessment of what is needed in space to accomplish
the work of our many different ministries here at St. Mary. Please join us!
From the Desk of Fr. Kris!

“ after we have poured forth prayers of supplication again and again to
God, and have invoked the light of the Spirit of Truth, for the glory of
Almighty God who has lavished his special affection upon the Virgin Mary,
for the honor of her Son, the immortal King of the Ages and the Victor over
sin and death, for the increase of the glory of that same august Mother,
and for the joy and exultation of the entire Church; by the authority of our
Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own
authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed
dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary,
having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and
soul into heavenly glory” – with those words, on November 1, 1950, Pope
Pius XII in his apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus defined the
dogma of the Assumption of Our Lady into heaven, which is the “youngest” dogma in the Church.
It can create the question – did the Church believe in the Assumption of Mary into heaven (with her earthly
body) before November 1950? – The answer is of course YES. The term “dogma” (as Cardinal Avery Dulles
explains) means a divinely revealed truth, proclaimed as such by the infallible teaching authority of the
Church, and hence binding on all the faithful without exception, now and forever. Therefore, dogma is not
creating a new belief but defined by the Magisterium of the Church the belief that already exists and is
common to the entire universal Church. For this reason Pope Pius XII collected and explained the various
testimonies, indications and signs of this common belief of the Church including the Church Fathers’
teaching, and the liturgical tradition.
But what does this all mean to us?
The Assumption of Our Lady is connected and flows naturally from the dogma of Immaculate Conception,
which was defined by Pope Pius IX in his apostolic constitution Ineffabilis Deus on December 8th, 1854. In
that document Pope Pius IX wrote that the Blessed Virgin Mary "in the first instance of her conception, by a
singular privilege and grace granted by God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human
race, was preserved exempt from all stain of original sin.” Therefore, it was impossible that the same body
from which our Lord Jesus Christ took his human Body, could be exposed to the corruption of death.
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the solemnity that gives honor to Our Lady, for her entire life
being constant FIAT (Latin for “Be it done”) to God’s will, for which she shares now the heavenly glory of
her Son and is adored by the whole community of Saints and Angels as their Queen. But, the Assumption is
also the solemnity of our faith and hope that if only we give ourselves under the guidance and motherly protection of Our Lady, and listened to her Son Our Lord Jesus Christ, after this earthly life, we too can share
the same joy and glory in the eternity.

An Examination of Conscience for Private Prayer
Find a quiet place where you can be alone without interruptions. Take a minute to get calm and to ask
Jesus to send his Spirit to help you pray well.
Prayer
Loving God, you have made us your sons and daughters. You called Zacchaeus to be your disciple. and you
call me, too. Help me to hear your word, to respond with faith, and to change my sinful ways. I ask this
prayer through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Read this Gospel from your Bible…Luke 19:1-10 (Zacchaeus)
Examination of Conscience Read this slowly, taking time to think about each question.
Have I taken time to pray, to praise and to thank God? Do I participate at Mass by responding, singing and
praying? Do I ask God to help me make good choices?
Do I use the names of God and Jesus respectfully? Do I learn more about my faith through reading the
Bible, other spiritual texts, and by listening carefully to homilies?
Do I really believe that Jesus has forgiven me?
Have I taken anything that belongs to someone else? If I’ve cheated people, have I paid them back? Have I
hurt other people by fighting, gossiping or running them down? When I’ve hurt someone, have I said, “I’m
sorry”? Have I forgiven people who have hurt me?
Do I keep my promises? Have I sometimes refused to honor my spouse, parents, supervisors? Do I respect
those people who are less fortunate than I? Am I generous with my possessions, talents or time?
Do I take good care of myself by eating good food, getting enough rest and exercise, and being serious about
my personal commitments? Do I avoid entertainment or other activities that I know are sinful? Do I say
“no” to someone or something that could hurt me or get me into trouble?
Am I careful to keep the good earth clean and beautiful, or do I throw trash around, or waste water, food and
energy? Do I respect the life of plants and animals around me, or do I sometimes hurt or destroy them?
Act of Contrition.
I am sorry for all my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned
against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no
more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name,
my God, have mercy. Amen.
Once you have prayed this Examination of Conscience, you will be ready to go to Confession
(Saturdays, 4-4:30).

St. Mary Parish to Sponsor Refugee Family
Three times a year, St. Mary parishioners collect household items to welcome refugee families
resettling in Chicago. These families are forced to leave their country of origin because of war,
terror and threat of persecution. They are screened by the US Department of State and arrive with
next to nothing. Catholic Charities of Chicago facilitates their resettlement process which includes
intensive English classes and secured employment within 90 days.
St. Mary Parish has provided welcome packs to refugee families for several years. We are now
broadening our support with the formation of our St. Mary Refugee Sponsorship Committee.
Together with Catholic Charities, the committees’ goals are heightening awareness of refugees’
plight, developing relationships between refugee families and parishioners, and providing financial and
in-kind support to facilitate their self-sufficiency. The parish will sponsor one, and eventually, two
refugee families arriving to the Rogers Park neighborhood. Parishioner support is critical to
achieving this goal.
Preparations are already underway to welcome our first family, expected to arrive in August. A
Welcome Pack and furniture is currently in storage in warehouse space generously donated by Dudek
& Bock. We have collected over $1,300 (nearly half of our annual goal) to supplement rent over the
initial resettlement period. When ready, we will set up their new apartment (a stark contrast to
their previous camp living conditions) and greet our newly arriving family.
Coming up very soon, St. Mary’s Girl Scout Troop is hosting a picnic for the refugee children on
Saturday, August 24th at Mary Park. In addition, Fr. May has authorized a second collection in
support of our Refugee fund for the weekend of August 24th/25th.
Our Catholic Social Teaching calls us to” Welcome the Newcomer”. There are plenty of ways to get
involved. Please consider sharing your time, talent and treasure to this new effort. For more
information on the Refugee Sponsorship Committee or to join the committee, please contact
Kate Nessinger at [email protected].

ADULT EDUCATION BOOK DISCUSSION
There will be a discussion of the first three chapters of the book, Transformation in Christ by
Dietrich Von Hildebrand on Sunday evenings Aug. 25, Sept. 1 and Sept. 8 at 7:00 PM in the
Oak Room.
We will discuss the first three chapters with a special emphasis on the first chapter entitled
“The Readiness to Change.” It is VERY important to read the first chapter before the first session.
We will also discuss the key concepts of contrition and self-knowledge. At the conclusion of these
three sessions we will have a handout that will be quite helpful in increasing our self-knowledge.
This discussion will be lead by Deacon Bob Boharic. Any questions call, 447-2838.
Help Bring Mary Home
You are invited to join Bethlehem Woods Retirement Community
“Bring Mary Home” by celebrating 100 years of the beloved grotto
located at Bethlehem Woods Retirement Community. Earlier this year,
the Mary statue and others from the grotto had to be moved to make way
for a security roadway. With your help we are building a new prayerful
place of serenity for residents and the community to enjoy. You are
invited to a special mass to celebrate the Queenship of Mary, as we look
to bring Mary home:

LEAVE A LEGACY
We are grateful for the generous support that you give to
St. Mary through your weekly contributions. Have you
considered providing for the continuation of that support
by including the parish in your Will?
Bequests given to the parish through Wills are for the
sole use of St. Mary Parish. To include the parish in
your Will, the correct language is:
“I give (a percentage or amount) to the Catholic Bishop
of Chicago - A Corporation Sole, for the sole benefit of
St. Mary Parish, Riverside.”
Thanks for giving consideration to leaving a legacy!
