This weekend, Fr. William Ojulo of the Archdiocese of Tororo, Uganda will be preaching at all our Masses.
Once a year, every single Catholic parish in the United States welcomes a Missionary to share with us about
the Church’s important work of spreading the Gospel, especially by caring for the poor in distant lands.
Their visit also affords us the opportunity to support this work by our prayers and through a special
collection. Detailed information about the Catholic Church in Tororo is provided in this bulletin.

Dear Members of the St. Mary’s Parish Family,
This week the young people of St. Mary’s will enjoy two special faith experiences. 130 of our children will take part in
our 2016 Vacation Bible School, “Cave Quest – Following Jesus the Light of the World.” I thank our Vacation Bible
School Director, Mrs. Kristin Roberto, for all her hard work organizing this event; as well as Knights of Columbus Bob
Connoni and Mitch Liro, Deacon Americo Santos, and all the other volunteers who helped create the amazing “cave”
environment in Father Haley Hall. Take a peek after Mass today, and please pray for a safe and spiritually fruitful VBS
this week!
Also this week, more than 70 of our parish teens will travel to Mississippi for Hurricane Katrina relief mission work. We
ask God’s blessing on these generous young people and on Matt Chick and the other adults who will lead them. May their
journey be safe and may they discover Christ in many new ways through this time of service in His name. I know our St.
Mary’s group will be a blessing to those they meet.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives us one of the great treasures of our faith – the Our Father Prayer. Every word of this prayer
is packed with grace and truth for those who seek to know God better. The word “Our” reminds us that we never relate to
God in isolation or only as individuals. Rather to love God is to love others, and to join with others in His name. That is
why we come together as Church and in common worship. The word “Father” reminds us of the fealty we owe to God as
our Creator, as well as the love He holds for each one of us – never seeking to condemn His children, but only to bring
them safely home.
I encourage you this week to try praying the Our Father slowly word by word, really reflecting on what you say.
Whenever St. Teresa of Lisieux found her prayer life getting stale, she would always go back to the Our Father and pray it
meditatively word by word and phrase by phrase. Sometimes it would take her a full hour to say one Our Father in this
way, but always this exercise helped her get her prayer life back on track. And it can do the same for us. The danger of a
prayer we know as well as the Our Father is that we can start saying it by rote and at speed without really even thinking
about what we say. As St. Edmund once observed, truly “It is better to say one Our Father fervently and devoutly than a
thousand with no devotion and full of distraction.”

below.

The Archdiocese of Tororo, Uganda, covering an approximate area of 8,500 square
miles, serves an estimated population of 4.2 million people, about 1.5 million of whom are Catholic.
1) Parishes: The Archdiocese of Tororo has the following pastoral entities:
•
42 parishes
•
984 missions or sub-parishes (village churches with no resident priest)
In order to bring pastoral services nearer to the people, the Archdiocese plans within the next few years to raise five subparishes (missions) to parish status.
2) Formation of pastoral ministers: The chief pastoral ministers who serve the aforementioned parishes are priests and
catechists.

The formation of priests starts from our high-school seminary, where during their most formative years, young
men are provided an all-round education. Currently we have a record number of about 315 seminarians, about a quarter
of whom usually proceed on to the major seminary. We have about 50 seminarians currently studying in the national
philosophical and theological major seminaries. The increased enrollment at all levels requires more facilities as well as
increased overall costs.
•
Once ordained, our priests need to continue their formation, especially by attending educational workshops and
spiritual retreats. Some of the priests are also selected to go on to graduate studies to return and serve in specialized
ministries. We currently have 108 native diocesan priests and 10 religious priests (6 native and 4 foreign).
•
While the priests have overall charge of the parishes, they are helped by 945 catechists who basically substitute
for them at the mission churches (sub-parishes). These catechists also need training if they are to fulfil all the liturgical
and teaching duties that they must undertake in the absence of the priests, besides their own proper duties.
3) Transportation of pastoral ministers: As already indicated, much of the pastoral ministry of parishes takes place
away from the main centre and rectory, and instead takes place in the village mission churches. This ministry requires
transportation both for the priests and the catechists, otherwise they have to walk back and forth to the mission churches,
sometimes for about three hours.
4) Education: In collaboration with the Government of Uganda, the Archdiocese runs several Primary, Secondary and
Technical schools. The concept of promoting education is as old as the Church herself; namely, to bring out the various
gifts and talents in young people, perfect them so that they can effectively participate in the political, economical, social
activities of their country and engage in the evangelization work of the Church.
Most of these schools, run by religious sisters and brothers, are in rural settings where there is no electricity, no computers
and not enough textbooks and laboratory equipment. The teaching and learning process becomes very difficult in such an
environment. These schools and health care facilities are run by our 16 native religious brothers and 243 native religious
sisters.
5) Health: The Archdiocese has one hospital, three sub-hospitals and twelve small medical facilities through which we
try to fulfill Christ’s ministry of physical healing. In order to run them efficiently, qualified and committed personnel are a
must as are adequate supplies and equipment. These facilities are not funded by the Government; therefore, they must
depend on user fees to purchase drugs and equipment and cover the cost of personnel. The religious sisters who minister
in these facilities do so only with great difficulty.
6) Economic development: In 1973, when they first sensed the presence of Missionaries dwindling, the Bishops of
Eastern Uganda began planning what to do when most Missionaries would leave the Region. They came up with the
following formula: “The Church in Eastern Africa should aim at becoming self-evangelizing, self-administering and selfreliant.” Today the Church in this Region is indeed self-evangelizing and self-administering but far from self-reliant
economically. The Archdiocese of Tororo, through its development arm CARITAS, empowers the laity with skills that
can improve their economic base. 69% of the people are peasant farmers with small plots of land on which to cultivate
their crops. Because of this, most of them live from hand to mouth, which has an adverse impact on their income.
Through CARITAS-Tororo, the Archdiocese runs programs, especially in the area of improved agricultural methods, so
that families can sustain themselves better economically.
7) Women: The Archdiocesan Women’s Desk focuses on the realities of women. When empowered, women can do a
great deal to improve their families’ economic situation as well as the sanitary condition of their homes. The Archdiocese
subscribes to an African saying that, “If you educate a man, you educate one person. But if you educate a woman, you
educate the whole nation.”
8) Water: Our Five-Year Strategic Plan includes a program to increase access to clean, safe water. Presently only 72%
of our people have access to improved water sources; the rest have to rely on unprotected springs and wells. We hope that
this coming year we will be able to drill additional wells—so many families benefit from each well.

FATIMA DAY AT THE SHRINE IN HOLLISTON: On Saturday, August 13th, the Xaverian Missionaries will hold
the traditional Fatima Day celebration in honor of Our Lady. This year’s theme is connected to the EXTRAORDINARY
JUBILEE OF MERCY – MARY MOTHER OF MERCY. The main celebrant and homilist will be Fr. Tony Lalli, sx.
Fr. Tony served for many years in our missions in Brazil (Amazon Region and in the City of San Paolo). At present he
lives at the Fatima Shrine and he is very much involved in assisting the Brazilian and Portuguese communities in the
Archdiocese of Boston. The theme for the evening is: “Mary and Mercy in the teachings of St. Guido M. Conforti”
(Founder of the Xaverian Missionaries). The evening begins with sing-along at 6:30 p.m. and Mass at 7:00 p.m. At 8:00
p.m., Rosary and Candlelight procession followed by refreshments served in the Shrine’s Hall. All are welcome!!!
ST. ANTHONY SHRINE EMMAUS MINISTRY FOR GRIEVING PARENTS ONE-DAY SPIRITUAL

HOLLISTON SENIOR CENTER: The Holliston Senior Center is collecting items for their annual yard sale to be
held on September 10th at the Center beginning August 1st. Donations of gently used items (house wares, tools, holiday
items, jewelry, children’s toys, etc.). No sporting equipment, electronics or upholstered furniture, please. Collection
hours are every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Donations may be dropped off by the garage.

THIS WEDNESDAY, JULY 27th – ADVENTURE DAY TO BROWNSTONE
QUARRY EXPLORATION & DISCOVERY PARK. Please arrive at the Parish
Center at 7:15 a.m. as the bus will depart at 7:30 a.m. (we will have donuts & juice boxes
on the bus ride down) and return around 6:30 p.m.
Please be sure to bring the following: a swimsuit (under clothes or use the changing rooms there), towel, dry clothes
for the ride home and a plastic bag for your wet swim suit, sandals or tevas, sneakers if you want to rock climb,
waterproof sun block, a hearty bagged lunch and 3 drinks (we’ll have drink coolers), any prescription medication,
epipens, inhalers, etc., and optional cash for snacks and food sold there. You will have unlimited access to swimming,
inflatable water toys, rock climbing, cliff jumping, zip lines, large waterslide, wakeboarding and challenge courses.
Thursday, August 18th – Whitewater Rafting, Deerfield River, MA. Depart Parish Center at 6 a.m., return 7:30 – 8 p.m.

CAVE QUEST - VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2016:
This coming week will be buzzing with the joyful voices of
children as they venture into “Following Jesus, the Light of
the World.” We welcome all the children to a fun filled
week of VBS coordinated by Kristin Roberto and many
adult leaders. The sets and props are all designed and built
by the Roberto’s and many wonderful volunteers. Stop by
and take a peek into Fr. Haley Hall. Pray that all the
children are inspired by the message to follow Jesus. We
are thankful to Kristin, Mike, the Knight’s of Columbus and
all the volunteers for their dedication and enthusiasm in
making this week a memorable experience for the children.
SPECIAL NEEDS TEACHERS: Our R.E. Program can
use one or two teachers who have special needs training to
assist with a few Grade 3 children on Monday afternoon
from 3 – 4:30 PM. Please contact our office at 508-4296076 or send us an email to [email protected] if you
can help. Classes meet on alternate weeks for ninety
minutes.
SPECIAL NEEDS PROGRAM IN RELIGIOUS ED:
Does your child have unique learning needs? If any family
has a child that would benefit from a special religious
education program please contact Fran Crespi at 508-4296076 or by email at [email protected]. We can
prepare your child to receive First Penance and First
Communion no matter the age of your child. It is important
that all children come to know God’s love for them so that
they will see the face of God through Jesus.
TEACHER TRAINING: On Monday, August 22 through,
Thursday, August 25 from 6:30 to 9:00 PM training in
classroom methods will be offered for teachers, both new
and returning in RM 3-4. Please contact the R.E. Office

PRE-K – GRADE 7 COORDINATOR MEETING:
A meeting will be held on Thursday, August 31 from 7:30
to 9:00 p.m. in RM 3 – 4 for Pre-K – GR-7 Coordinators to
receive their student lists and agendas for the 2016-2017
program. If you have projects for your grade during the
year please make the kits during the summer months.
