From your President . . . . !
Greetings!!
Today, I reflect on the early Ford . . . !
The Model T, butt of many jokes early on, was treated like a
family friend, a faithful ser vant, a loyal employee by
Everyman. Affectionately, she had become, firstly, “tin
Lizzie”, and then “Lizzie” and thus she was to remain. Never
impressive, the stark, functional, unlovely lines and the basic
lack of creature comfor ts ear ned the ne ver-changed
appellation.!
The “new Ford” introduced in December 1928, changed all
that. The ver y appearance of the Model A sug gested
character, implied integrity and promised performance. Ford
owners, without hesitation, “laid it on the line” and acquired
the “new Ford.”!
Many became convinced that here at last was a car that not
only belonged, but actually led the way to the future. No
longer the butt of jokes, the new Ford had joined the country
club set, and in the words of a song written by Walter
O’Keefe, and shortly to become immensely poplar . . . .!
“Henry Made a Lady Out of Lizzie”!
Talk of this and talk of that,!
Boys you must take off your hat,!
HENRY’S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!!
Has she plenty, has she much?!
Got the “tin” you love to touch,!
HENRY’S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!!
They used to park her in a lot,!
For that they charged two bits,!
But now they charge you nothing,!
You park her at the Ritz.!
She once had rattles in her wheel,!
But now she’s full of “sex-appeal”,!
HENRY’S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!!
It’s hard to believe that is has been 86 years since the first
Model As rolled off assembly lines. I’m sure Henry Ford and
those first auto workers never entertained the idea that you
and I would still be driving Model A cars and trucks today,
and that there would be Model A Clubs all over the world! I
cannot imagine that 86 years from now, we will be driving the
cars that are coming off assembly lines today! How fortunate
we are to own, drive and love our Model As! How fortunate
we are to have each other to tour with and to share our fun
and repairs (sometimes)!!
If you haven’t driven your A lately, won’t you join us as we
tour the back roads of SC? Michael has made plans to drive
to Batesburg for lunch at Shealy’s BBQ in February. This will
be a relatively short trip; won’t you dust off your car and join
us?!
In closing, I want to thank Vent and Frances for hosting our
January business meeting. We appreciate your generosity in
allowing us to use your great space as we gather to conduct
Columbia, South Carolina!

I hope to see you all on the road!!
Safe travels,!

!
From your Vice Pres. & Tour
Director . . . .!
I’d like to give a big thanks to Vent and Francis Mack for
hosting our January meeting, and to the Austin’s for the
delicious chicken bog. We had a great meal with lots of
shared goodies prepared by club members.!
Are you as ready for spring as I am? The cold, windy weather
we have recently had makes enjoying the A somewhat
challenging, but don’t let that stop you. Please join us as we
travel to Shealy’s barbecue on February 15th. We will meet at
the Kmart in Lexington at 10:30 to travel to Shealy’s. We will
have our monthly meeting while there. With Danny’s help,
there is the possibility for a local mystery tour after lunch.!
Our annual club picnic is coming up on March 22nd, and is
sure to be a good time for everyone. It will be held at Saluda
Shoals Park from 10 am – 3:30 pm. Hopefully the weather will
have warmed by then and we can enjoy a nice sunshine filled
day together.!
Plans for our April tour are being worked out, and I will
provide more details to you once they are finalized.!
I hope to see you all on the road in your A…!
See you in your A,!

From your Editor . . . .!
Lots of good reading this month! Don’t miss the flyer for Picnic in the Park,
and let’s hope that Mother Nature cooperates, this year!!
I’m really looking forward to lunch at Shealy’s BBQ. I realize that the club has
been there in the past, but it will be a first for me. Love barbecue, and South
Carolina has some of the very best! Can’t think of a better day - Model A’s and
barbecue!!
Until next month . . .!

Valentine Gifts
Taken from Fall/Winter Montgomery Wards, 1931
By Patti Jones
Gifts for Him
O.K. ladies, what would our "Men" want for
Valentine Day in 1931 for their Model A Fords?
Looking at a 1931 Montgomery Wards catalog, I
came across items that any Model A'er would like
to accessorize his car. Upper left (A) is a high
compression cylinder head; also known as a Police
head, that law enforcement agencies have put on
their Model A's for speed. It will give a Model A
5.9 to 1 compression ration to a stock Model A
head. Another fancy added on was a heat and oil
pressure gauge accessory mounted under the dash
of your Model A, upper right (B). For easy
starting, a starter-pedal, giving easy reach and little
effort to help your Model A man (C). Last, is
another gadget aid to the "Model A man of your
life". It's an emergency brake extension lever so
your Model A man doesn't have to have a long
reach in releasing and setting the parking brake
(D). Many of these 1931 gifts would be still
greatly appreciated today by our guys ..... except
the prices indicated here; especially the $5.95
police-head, would go for over $225.00!
Gifts for Her
It's very easy, gentlemen, to please a Model A
lady.... We'd love a new Waltham Bracelet Watch
in white gold (A). Or, we'd even take a new
compact with lipstick in any of these styles (B).
Of course,, a "girl's best friend" is a diamond and
here are various ring selections I'm sure she would
hove; many set in platinum. Lastly, any of the
enameled mesh bags below would certainly win
your Model A lady's heart.
Have A Happy Valentines Day!
