HIGHLIGHTS
The President’s Corner
Can you believe this year is nearly half gone? It seems like just
a few weeks ago we had snowflakes flying around. Well, actually
it was. We sure have had a strange assortment of weather but it
seems like maybe it’s settling into what might be considered a
normal pattern.
Our first show of the year has come and gone and probably by
the time you read this the second one will be history as well.
Weather was still a problem at the Vinton Dogwood Festival show
but at least it was better than last year.

We had fifty-one
registrations with just a few no-shows of those who registered
early. Actually, considering the weather of the day, I think that
Bellacino’s - Daleville
was pretty good. I want to thank the great team of workers who
helped park cars, judge, and handle registration. Congratulation
goes John Carter for earning the Best Modified award for his 1935
Ford Truck and to Rodney Cox for winning the best antique award
for his 1948 Mercury. Next up, Roanoke Festival in the Park.

The tentative date for our summer picnic at
the Barnhart’s is July 16 and I hope everyone is
planning to be there. Our board will confirm
the date at our June board meeting and we will
announce it officially at our June meeting at
Bellacino’s. The summer picnic is no doubt our
best attended club event with lots of good food
and a great location.
The Barnhart’s have
hosted the picnic for at least twenty-five years
and we certainly appreciate them doing that.
Hats off to Tom Cox for earning his AACA
100 Judging Credit Award at Vineyard, NJ.
That took a lot of work and is a great
achievement. Way to go Tom.
In addition to our club hosted car shows
there is another great event coming to Roanoke
on June 24/25, Star City Motor Madness . The
Williamson Road Cruise will take place on
Friday evening and the show in downtown
Roanoke will be on Saturday. Not only is this a
great event, it also supports the Virginia
Museum of Transportation. On hand at the
show will be NASCAR driver Bobby Allison
and NASCAR artist Sam Bass.
For more
information go to starcitymotormadness.com.
You don’t want to miss it.
As always, I hope to see you at our next
club meeting at Bellacino’s on June 14.

IS YOUR REGION A RED SPORTS
CAR OR A USED UP BEATER?
By Chuck Crane
VP Regions Development & Support Central and
Western Divisions
Remember when your Region was like a
vintage red sports car everybody wanted to
ride in? You had monthly meetings with a
program, drawings for wearing club clothing
or simply being there, a mini-tour every
month, car shows, a great news- letter to keep
everybody informed, and lots of fun. But now,
you’re
an
beater,
old
barely
able to make the
once
a
month
get together for
breakfast
at
McDonalds. If this is you, here’s a wakeup call!
Pretty soon you and your friends tire of that,
and National AACA gets a request to dissolve
the Region. That happens too frequently all
over the country.
The story doesn’t have to end that way.
Why not give the old beater a new paint job
and a tune-up? As a start, just try being more
visible
in
your
community.
Drive
your
beautiful vehicles. Contact a local civic group
like Lions or Rotary or Kiwanis which is active
in your community.

They depend on the public to help raise
money for their projects-and a small car
display with your Region name prominently
displayed will bring people to their event
and probably get you free publicity in the
local newspaper or on radio broadcasts. This
tactic may well bring out potential new
members to revitalize your club. Building on
that, branch out to hosting a small swap
meet, a mini-tour to somewhere close, car
show, etc. If you’re worried about insurance
costs for a club event you host, you’re
covered just call National Headquarters for
a certificate. You’re part of the largest and
oldest car club in the world-don’t let it go
and just die out. There are plenty of things
you can do to put new spark plugs into that
old beater and watch it shine like new again!
