Their encounter initially led to the album Sira in 2009, a milestone in a jazz which establishes an intercontinental dialogue. The exploration continues and strengthens: the two have just released a third album, Djaliya, recorded, as for the first two, in a church. Therefore, it seemed only natural that this duo would stop at the Temple to share its journey with us. Ana Moura (PT) <><><><><><>< CHAPITEAU COLORES Saturday 11 April | 20h30 | CHF 53.- | Seated concert Ana Moura (vocals) Ângelo Freire (Portuguese guitare) Pedro Soares (guitar) André Moreira (bass) João Gomes (keyboard) Mário Costa (drums/percussions) Rebel daughter of Fado, Ana Moura embodies the contemporary spirit of this ancestral genre, representing it on the international scene. The spellbinding singer innovates by elegantly flirting with pop and other Anglophone influences, bringing a new breath of modernity to Fado. Her deep and melancholic voice is used to brilliantly deconstruct a genre in which reside emotional intensity, profound sensuality and sumptuously plaintive tunes tinged with cosmopolitan musical references. Occasionally relinquishing her native tongue for an exotic sounding English, Ana Moura offers an urban interpretation of the genre. A charmingly disorienting experience. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 Anouar Brahem « Souvenance » (TN) <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>< CHAPITEAU L’EVENEMENT Mardi 14 avril | 20h30 | CHF 53.- | Seated concert Anouar Brahem (oud) François Couturier (piano) Klaus Gesing (clarinet) Björn Meyer (bass) Strings Of Birds (quartet and string ensemble) After nine albums acclaimed by the public and critics alike, Anouar Brahem returns with a new and exceptional project, « Souvenance ». After a world premiere last summer with the Tallin Chamber Orchestra in front of 8'000 people in the Roman Amphitheatre of Carthage, the great Tunisian oud master will present the Swiss premiere of his project in Cully alongside the Bernese string orchestra Strings Of Birds and his quartet formed by clarinettist Klaus Gesing, pianist François Couturier and Swiss bass player Björn Meyer. Equally traditional and subversive, he creates an oneiric and skilfully composite universe which takes as much from jazz and European classical music as it does from oriental and Mediterranean traditions. Rooted in ancestral and contemporary cultures, he deploys powerful melodies in a climate of contemplation and intense concentration. Big Daddy Wilson (US) <><><><><><><><><><>< NEXT STEP BIG BLUES Saturday 18 April | 19h30 | CHF 39.- | Seated concert Big Daddy Wilson (vocals, guitar) Roberto Morbioli (guitar) Paolo Legramandi (bass) Nik Taccori (drums) Born in Eastern Mississipi, Big Daddy Wilson didn't see a real blues concert before walking in to a club in Bremsen as an adult. This revelation drove the expatriate to throw himself body and soul into music. Twenty years and a couple of studio albums later, Thumb a Ride confirmed him one of the greatest contemporary bluesmen. It's his latest album though, I'm your man, which brought him international success. Always respectful of the blues roots he inherited, the charismatic singer adds soul, funk and gospel to his musical range, memories of his American youth. His baritone voice, of a rare emotional power, recounts the nostalgic stories of his native land. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 BOUNCE (CH) <><><><><> CHAPITEAU ALL THAT JAZZ Saturday 18 April | 20h30 | CHF 53.- | Seated concert Jonathan Maag (saxophone) Julian Hesse (trumpet, bugle) Andrey A. Tatarinets (bass) Domi Chansorn (drums) Explosive new phenomenon of European jazz, BOUNCE's wild and innovative music intrigues. Zurich Jazz Prize laureates in 2013 - one of the most important awards of the scene - the four Bernese musicians free themselves from the constraints of jazz by creating an expanded framework in which a spirit of collective improvisation cohabits with sophisticated composing. The absence of harmonic instruments gives a particular sonority to their music where dissonances are laid bare and melodies intertwine and fight. The result is an eclectic but controlled chaos, blend of jazz, pop and drum'n'bass where unheard sonorities and a strongly personal artistic direction are revealed. Brad Mehldau trio (US) <><><><><><><><><><><> CHAPITEAU JAZZ DE HAUT VOL Monday 13 April | 20h30 | CHF 58.- | Seated concert Brad Mehldau (piano) Larry Grenadier (bass) Jeff Ballard (drums) Active since the 90's, Brad Mehldau is one of the most influential musicians of his generation. Considering himself both an improviser and a formalist, the outstanding pianist likes to overlap the extremes, helping him find a delicate balance between complexity and simplicity, density and purity, virtuosity and sensitivity. His elegant and expressive style gives his work a remarkable fragility and makes him one of the most captivating musicians of the last twenty years. He will be performing as a trio under the Cully Jazz Chapiteau, alongside exceptional bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 Colin Stetson & Sarah Neufeld (US / CA) <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>< TEMPLE INDIE CLASSICAL Monday 13 April | 21h00 | CHF 37.- | Seated concert Colin Stetson (saxophones) Sarah Neufeld (violin) This is a new experience for the Temple in Cully: the saxophonist Colin Stetson and the violinist Sarah Neufeld are used to huge electrified stages and ecstatic atmospheres as they move in the same universe as the excellent Canadian independent rock band Arcade Fire. Here, they meet for a surprising tête-à-tête where the music is shaped in hypnotic and heady loops. The structures evolve in a high-flown dialogue until the musicians reach a trance-like state induced by the circular breathing of the saxophonist and the violinist’s bow strokes. Do not miss this unique experiment. Dan Tepfer solo - Goldberg Variations (FR / US) <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> TEMPLE JAZZ MEETS BACH Wednesday 15 April | 21h00 | CHF 37.- | Seated concert Dan Tepfer (piano) “Brilliant”, “breathtaking”, “exceptional”: the talent of this young American pianist born in Paris, Dan Tepfer, impresses both jazz and classical critics. Winning awards on several occasions in the greatest international competitions, he is at ease playing solo as well as with a symphony orchestra. In 2011, he decides to tackle a great master by playing his visions of J-S. Bach’s anthological Goldberg Variations. A contemporary commentary on a worshipped masterpiece, this project confirms the durability and continuity of this extraordinary artist’s musical expression. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 Daniel Humair 4tet "Sweet & Sour" (CH / FR) <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>< CHAPITEAU ALL THAT JAZZ Saturday 18 april | 20h30 | CHF 53.- | Seated concert Daniel Humair (drums) Vincent Peirani (accordion) Emile Parisien (saxophone soprano) Bruno Chevillon (double bass) Legendary swiss drummer Daniel Humair has brought together three incredible musicians, amongst the very best of the contemporary French jazz scene in the Sweet & sour quartet. With a knack for surrounding himself with talented artists, he collaborates here with Vincent Peirani, accordion wizard, and Emile Parisien, soprano saxophone virtuoso, who hypnotised the Cully audience last year. While the two play at intertwining brightly sober melodic ideas, bass player Jerome Regard gives them creative support devoid of superficiality and in harmony with the colourful drumming of David Humair. An intense and freshly invigorating quartet. Dom La Nena (BR) <><><><><><><><> NEXT STEP DELICATESSE BRESILIENNE Thursday 16 April | 19h30 | CHF 37.- | Seated concert Dominique Pinto (double bass) Ruben Jacobina (guitar, bass) In 2012, Dom la Nena made the walls of the Temple de Cully vibrate when she was the supporting act at Piers Faccini's concert. This lunar artist with a dreamy voice takes us to a nostalgic world where her Brazilian influences merge with elegant folk, chamber music and the lullabies of her childhood. Her second album, Soyo, is a web of miniature songs with unusual arrangements, both light and deep. Like a baby-faced sage, she paints on stage an intimate and poetic musical universe with a thousand and one faces. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 Dorian Wood solo (US) <><><><><><><><><><><> TEMPLE ONE MAN ONE VOICE Friday 17 April | 21h00 | CHF 37.- | Seated concert Dorian Wood (piano) Watch out, a phenomenon. This singer from Los Angeles will not leave us indifferent. Gravitating in the spheres of contemporary art, always reinterpreting his own music depending on the occasion and his inspiration, Dorian Wood has become a major figure of the American underground scene. His European appearances are rare. Alone in front of the piano, his incredible voice filled with a rare emotion will resound as he interprets his repertoire, between exalted gospel and haunted folk. Not to be missed. Electro Deluxe (FR) <><><><><><><><><> NEXT STEP FUNKY FRIDAY Friday 10 April | 19h30 | CHF 37.- | Standing concert Arnaud Renaville (drums) Jeremie Coke (bass) Gael Cadoux (kexboards) Thomas Faure (saxophone) Vincent Payen (trumpet) Bertrand Luzignant (trombone) James Copley (vocals) Electro Deluxe, a surprising cocktail of hybrid jazz and funk, takes us into the new musical spheres of the French scene. Amazingly retro, this quintet invokes funk and soul divinities with the help of seventies synthesisers, sophisticated brass and a devastatingly charming American crooner. With its timeless repertoire, the band transcends limits of genres and epochs, performing vintage yet modern music, as current as the eclectic collaborations of the different band members: C2C, Hocus Pocus, Gaël Faye… Listen, live and dance to Electro Deluxe's chic and upbeat music. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 Elina Duni solo - Songs of Love & Exile (CH / AL) <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> TEMPLE ONE WOMAN ONE VOICE Sunday 12 April | 16h00 | CHF 37.- | Seated concert Elina Duni (vocals, acoustic guitar) She is one of the Festival’s faithful friends who no longer needs an introduction. Nonetheless, this incredible singer continues to surprise and amaze us. Elina Duni has made a name for herself with her quartet, and their perfect understanding and subtle balance led to her magnificent album signed on ECM, Matanë Malit. This year, however, she will take possession of the Temple alone, accompanied simply by a few notes of guitar, percussion or piano - intimate surroundings for her to sing her vision of Albania, and recount her human and artistic journey. Egopusher (CH) <><><><><><>< NEXT STEP DANCING VIOLIN Saturday 11 April | 22h30 | Free concert | Standing concert Tobias Preisig (violin, synth bass) Alessandro Giannelli (drums, effects) An unusual name for an unusual duo, Egopusher brings together Tobias Preisig's aggressive and poetic violin and Alessandro Giannelli's subtle beats in an explosion of freedom and spontaneity. Synthesisers complete the two musicians' kit, adding to their array of wacky sound effects. While Tobias Preisig reinvents his instrument by means of furious riffs and intoxicating tunes, Alessandro Giannelli develops a powerful, flowing style. Their music is intense and electrifying, but hints at a fascinating underlying vulnerability. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 Erika Stucky und da Blechhauf’n "Wally & Die 7 Geier" (CH) <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>< CHAPITEAU ASTONISHING NIGHT Friday 17 April | 20h30 | CHF 53.- | Seated concert Erika Stucky (vocals, accordion, film) Bernhard Holl (trombone) Georg Steiner (trombone bass) Alexander Krenn (trumpet, bugle) Christoph Geza Haider Kroiss (trumpet, bugle) Christian Wieder (trumpet, bugle) Reinhold Bieber (trombone, trumpet bass) Albert Wieder (helikon) Insular delicacy of the Swiss scene, Erika Stucky makes her natural habitat out of an experimental concoction of rugged punk, vintage rock, cabaret and nostalgic yodel mixed with her love of Tom Waits and her hippie youth. She will share her taste for burlesque and her unusual eclecticism for the fifth time in Cully with da Blechhauf'n, an Austrian brass septet who combine delicate virtuosity and crazy fantasy. Their new show, Wally und die Sieben Geier promises to be a spectacular mix of jazz, pop and blues interspersed with strange alpine legends. Volcanic, playful, sharp, psychedelic, Erica Stucky and da Blechhauf'n will give an unpredictable show! Faada Freddy (SN) <><><><><><><><> CHAPITEAU AFRICA GROOVE Friday 10 April | 20h30 | CHF 53.- | Standing concert Faada Freddy (lead vocals) Michael Désir (body percussions and choirs) Jean-Marie Marier (choirs) Philippe Aglaé (choirs) Gisela Razajanatovo (choirs) Emmanuel Vincent (choirs) After hitting the international scene with his rap group Daara J, the venerable master of the Sgalese music scene has metamorphosed in this surprising individual project. Under the wing of Imany, Faada Freddy has brought out Gospel Journey, an entirely a capella album supported by African body percussions. This captivating singer explores the possibilities of the human voice and produces an album both sincere and organic. Full of soul, R'n'B, gospel and ragga muffin influences, this incredible vocalist, true hit of 2015, invites us into an eclectic musical universe, a mix of Gregroy Porter, Salif Keita, Aretha Franklin and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. After a first album entitled It Will All Come Around, the band moves away from acoustic folk with its second opus, For the Music, with its catchy melodies, intoxicating rhythms and good Caribbean vibrations. Inspired by Motown, FM LAETI brings to us an old school soul coloured by a solar and brilliant voice. From Ray Charles to Nina Simone via Michael Jackson, the result is a glittery resolutely vintage pop which is as readily listened to as danced to. GoGo Penguin (GB) <><><><><><><><>< NEXT STEP FUTURE IS NOW Saturday 11 April | 19h30 | CHF 37.- | Seated concert Chris Illingworth (piano, electronic) Nick Blacka (double bass) Rob Turner (drums) Hailing from the rainy streets of Manchester, this oddly named trio is the latest rising stars of the UK Jazz scene. Featuring pianist Chris Illingworth, double bassist Nick Blacka and drummer Rob Turner, GoGo Penguin have become the most exciting band of the contemporary music scene after only two albums. Their critically acclaimed second album, V2.0, is a captivating synthesis of the most diverse influences: from Apex Twin to Shostakovitch, the trio blends electronica, classical music and jazz, and create a distinctive and brave new sound. Their telepathic interactions, frenetic breakbeats and catchy tunes promise to combine for a great acoustic concert. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 Gregory Porter (US) <><><><><><><><><> CHAPITEAU PHENOMENAL JAZZ Sunday 12 April | 18h00 | CHF 53.- | Seated concert Gregory Porter (vocals) Chip Crawford (piano) Aaron James (bass) Yosuke Sato (saxophone) Emanuel Harrold (drums) Since his sensational debut in 2010 with the critically acclaimed Water, Gregory Porter has been riding a wave of success, grabbing a Grammy award for his latest album Liquid Spirit along the way. The multi-talented Californian singer shows his gift for composing with extremely efficient pieces where his influences from jazz, blues, soul or R&B are brought together for our uttermost pleasure. In a comeback to old-school musical values, Porter charms critics and the public alike with a sound that has a definite seventies vibe to it- deep, powerful and ever so cool. His on-stage charisma, warm voice and intoxicating energy will guarantee new fans in every crowd. Guillaume Perret & The Electric Epic (FR) <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>< NEXT STEP JAZZ EN FUSION Wednesday 15 April | 19h30 | CHF 37.- | Standing concert Guillaume Perret (saxophone) Nenad Gajin (guitar) Laurent David (electric bass) Yoann Serra (drums) This won't be French musical phenomenon Guillaume Perret's first time in Cully. In 2012, this musical astronaut rocked the Next Step with an armada of pedals of all kind. For his new project Electric Epic, he is backed by three musicians from the progressive rock and contemporary jazz scene: guitarist Nenad Gajin bass player Laurent David and drummer Yoann Serra. Their latest album from outer space, Open me, reveals some psychedelic and hybrid music, a subtle blend of explosive punk, roaring rock and fusion jazz. Each of their compositions offers an audio-sensorial trip of a transcendental nature, deconstructing all musical stereotypes. Halfway between an electric Miles Davis and Magma's Zeuhl, their music deftly mixes stunning improvisations, frenetic rhythms, funky grooves and troubling electronica. Kasse Mady Diabaté therefore carries a huge responsibility, which he fully assumes by offering music charged with his country’s history to audiences throughout the world. Born out of a friendship between the kora player Ballaké Sissoko and the cellist arranger Vincent Segal, the new album Kiriké was created naturally around the effervescence and the talent of an acoustic all-star of Malian music, reunited around the singer for the occasion. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 Lisa Simone (US) <><><><><><><>< CHAPITEAU REVELATIONS Wednesday 15 April | 20h30 | CHF 53.- | Seated concert Lisa Simone (vocals) Hervé Samb (guitar) Reggie Washington (bass) Sonny Troupé (drums) After serving in the US Air Force, this singer with an unusual career path then waited till she was 52 before recording some of her own compositions. Having moved from under the shadow of her mother, Lisa is able to pay homage to her in her own way with a brilliant reworking of the iconic hit, Ain't Got No, I Got Life. With the support of her composer, arranger and guitarist, the Senegalese Hervé Samb, the singer reveals her complex vocal talent: powerful, supple and sensual. Like some secret journal, this first album retraces her long journey towards maturity, combining her African heritage, soothing folk and her mother's inestimable artistic legacy. Set against minimal music and noble melodies, her raw and powerful voice sings the tragic story of an oppressed people. Schallack (CH) <><><><><><> CHAPITEAU AUTOMATES ET GRAMOPHONES Thursday 16 April | 20h30 | CHF 73.- | Seated concert Vera Kappeler (harmonium, grammophone) Michael Flury (trombone, grammophone) Roman Bruderer (djembe, doundoun) Sharing a common passion for vintage recordings of all kind, trombonist Michael Flury and pianist Vera Kappeler found themselves playing as DJs with their two gramophones at the Moods in Zurich in 2014. The idea came up of showcasing an eclectic collection of 78 rpm discs in a project where the line between tradition and modernity is satisfyingly blurred. Vera Kappeler is no stranger to Cully, as the wild and multi-facetted pianist came to Cully in 2008 for a remarkable performance with her trio. The same goes for her accomplice, prodigious trombonist, who came to Cully alongside Sophie Hunger and Tobias Preisig. Together with percussionist Roman Bruderer, Schallack is a spontaneous creation, a jam between musicians and gramophones where musical traditions and periods clash. A sublimely anachronistic project which gives birth to modern music with an archaic pulse. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 Shai Maestro Trio (IL) <><><><><><><><><><>< CHAPITEAU REVELATIONS Wednesday 15 April | 20h30 | CHF 53.- | Seated concert Shai Maestro (piano) Ziv Ravitz (drums) Jorge Roeder (double bass) After taking his first steps alongside Avishai Cohen, it's as part of a trio that Shai Maestro has really taken off, accompanied by double bass player Jorge Roeder and drummer Ziz Ravitz. In their company, the aptly-named Maestro shapes the sonorities of his native Israël into brilliantly improvised fantasies. His music is steeped in jazz and traditional sounds, but the execution is classical and delicately captivating. With simplicity and patience, the trio produces some intensely romantic music, highlighted by sober rhythms. The three musicians possess formidable technique but favour restraint and avoid demonstrations of virtuosity as they explore a touching and poetic universe. Stephan Eicher und die Automaten (CH) <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> CHAPITEAU AUTOMATES ET GRAMOPHONES Thursday 16 April | 20h30 | CHF 73.- | Seated concert Stephan Eicher After the success of his latest acoustic album L'envolée, Stephan Eicher is back with an innovative project. Stephan Eicher und die Automaten is the confrontation between man and machine. For the first time in Cully, the famous Swiss singer presents an explosive one man show, set in a sort of Wunderkammer, a musical cabinet of wonders. Surrounded by an armada of musician automats, he will play an original repertoire composed in collaboration with renowned writers Philippe Djian and Martin Suter. An exercise in technological and poetic high-wire equilibrium, which is guaranteed to keep the Chapiteau under its spell every second of the way. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 Yilian Cañizares (CU) <><><><><><><><><>< CHAPITEAU COLORES Saturday 11 April | 20h30 | CHF 53.- | Seated concert Yilian Cañizares (vocals, violin) Daniel Stawinski (acoustic piano) David Brito (double bass) Cyril Regamey (drums et percussion) Inor Sotolongo (percussion) After a two year absence, Yilian Cañizares is back in Cully, backed by his charismatic quartet. Thanks to her latest album Invocación, the violinist and incandescent singer, laureate of the Prix du Public of the Tremplin Lémanique at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2008, sails rapidly towards international acclaim. Swiss by adoption, the Cuban origins of the singer come through passionately in music full of exquisitely complex Afro-Cuban rhythms. Mixing jazz and traditional Cuban music, the artist uses her plural identity to transcend the geographical borders of her different influences. Backed by pianist Daniel Stawinsky, double bass player David Brito and drummer/percussionist Cyril Regamey, Ylian Cañizares will set the Chapiteau on fire with her communicative energy and spirited, intense and poetic music. Yom (FR) <><><> TEMPLE LE SILENCE DE L’EXODE Tuesday 14 April | 21h00 | CHF 37.- | Seated concert Yom (clarinets) Farid D. (cella) Claude Tchamitchian (double bass) Bijan Chemirani (percussion) Yom has become a reference of Klezmer clarinet in France since the release of his first album New King of Klezmer Clarinet in 2008. Since then, he has pursued a brilliant career built on encounters and experiments. Here, however, he delivers an introspective project, a thousand miles away from the facetious universe we know. Originally a creation on the theme of the Diaspora, Le Silence de l'Exode provides the opportunity for this young clarinettist to look into the legendary exodus of the Jewish people who were guided by Moses after fleeing Egypt. With the help of three virtuosi, he intertwines Oriental, North African, Jewish and Armenian music and sensibilities. A sumptuous journey. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 Zara McFarlane (GB) <><><><><><><><><>< NEXT STEP WOMAN IN JAZZ Monday 13 April | 19h30 | CHF 37.- | Seated concert Zara McFarlane (vocals) Peter Edwards (piano) Max Luthert (double bass) Moses Boyd (drums) Binker Golding (saxophone tenor) One of the rising stars of British Jazz, Zara McFarlane took her first steps on the international music scene under the auspices of famous DJ Gilles Peterson. After an acclaimed first album in 2011, the singer with Jamaican roots released the sublime If you knew her which won her an award at the prestigious MOBO Awards. A smooth mix of moody jazz and sensual new soul, this new album reveals an eclectic artist who borrows as much from Pharaoh Sanders' spiritual jazz as she does from reggae and soul. Sensitive and serene, Zara MacFarlane lays her incredibly rich voice over some spare yet richly classical arrangements. CONCERT FOR CHILDREN Dom La Nena (BR) <><><><><><><><> NEXT STEP Thursday 16 April | 14h30 | CHF 9.- | Children aged 6 to 12 must be accompanied by an adult Dominique Pinto (chant, violoncello) Ruben Jacobina (guitare, basse) Dom La Nena, a lunar artist with a dreamy voice, takes us to a nostalgic world where her Brazilian influences merge with elegant folk, chamber music and the lullabies of her childhood. For this special children’s concert, she will be accompanied by her guitarist Ruben Jacobina. Dom La Nena will also give a concert on Thursday evening at the Next Step with her full band. It consists of about 70 free concerts spread over the Festival’s 9 days and in 14 venues, in Cully’s old quarter. Festival OFF changes constantly and its success is exponential. Comprised of a number of wine cellars or caveaux, varying in number between 12 and 14 from one year to the next, it always offers a wide-ranging variety of jazz, inclusive of both innovation and tradition. The Cully Jazz Festival’s organisers are committed to improving the services which are offered to the public. Thus, they focus particularly on the quality of the listening experience and the welcome, as well as facilitating the flow of festival-goers through the village’s alleyways. To each caveau its own character Individual traits which define each wine cellar’s character are polished to perfection, whether it be their musical programme or their atmosphere. The Schlagzeug welcomes essentially groups that come from the swiss german scene. The Caveau Mélanie Weber, situated in the heart of the village, has, from its opening in 2012, adopted a world music programme. Finally, since its beginnings in 2011, Le Jardin has progressively become one of the most visited venues of the OFF Festival, with invited artists throughout the entire week. The residencies’ success The concept of residencies which prevails at the Jardin, the Caveau des Vignerons as well as the THBBC, makes possible original and improbable artistic encounters. It contributes to making the OFF Festival a place of discoveries and exceptional creativity. In 2013, the residency “Tobias Preisig en laboratoire” in the Jardin, for example, enabled the Swiss-German violinist to lay down the first steps to his next opus. The latter was released in March 2014. As for the Caveau des Vignerons, a true place of folly, exchanges and musical explorations, it invites all of the IN Festival’s artists to take part in jam sessions after their performances. For a decade, the Veveysan pianist, Malcolm Braff, has breathed life into it. A true force of nature, Malcolm Braff imbued the Caveau des Vignerons with what has become the heart of the Festival’s magical and spontaneous musical encounters. Wishing to pass on the torch to young local artists, for 2012, Malcolm Braff invited Matthieu Llodra, Fabien Iannone and Maxence Sibille to manage the Caveau des Vignerons with him. Since the 2013 Festival, these three musicians have become the new guardians of this temple dedicated to improvised music. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 OVERVIEW FESTIVAL OFF Selection of some artists of the OFF (in alphabetical order) Gauthier Toux Trio (CH) <><><><><><><><><><><> SWEET BASILE Saturday 11 April | Caveau open from 18:00 to 02:00 Gauthier Toux (percussion) Kenneth Dahl Knudsen (double bass) Valentin Liechti (drums) Ex-HEMU student and no stranger to the area, Gauthier Toux usually works with double bass player Kenneth Dahl Knudsen and drummer Maxence Sibille. Their appearance in Cully brings a slight change in musicians, Maxence giving up his stool to Swiss musician Valentin Liechti, a regular of the Festival. The trio delight the jazz aficionados they meet everywhere they go, from Vienna to Orléans, Copenhagen to Lausanne and on many other stages. Their music navigates between actual styles, hybridisation and tradition, giving way to their first album, More than Ever. Matthieu Llodra Trio (CH) <><><><><><><><><><><><>< CAVEAU DES VIGNERONS Residency from 10th to 18th April. Caveau open from 20:00 to 02:00 (Thursday to Saturday) and from 20:00 to 01:00 (Sunday to Wednesday) Matthieu Llodra (keyboards) Fabien Iannone (bass) Maxence Sibille (drums) Many a night since 2010 have these three youngsters of the Romand Jazz scene invited themselves on to the stage of the Caveau des Vignerons, stealing the show from the resident trio and proving their impressive skill for keeping up a quality jam session, sometimes frenzied, sometimes delicate, always attentive to participants spontaneously joining the session. In 2012 the group received the public's prize at the Tremplin Lémanique du Montreux Jazz Festival, a rather encouraging distinction. Now confirmed residents, the trio has left their jazz-groove influences for electronic jazz. There is little doubt that this fresh and dynamic trio will enchant you to the end of the night with their jungle and drum'n'bass inspirations. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 Olivier Magarotto Quarkstet (CH) <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> LE JARDIN Residency on Friday 10th, Saturday 11th, Friday 17th and Saturday 18th April. Caveau open from 20:00 to 02:00 Olivier Magarotto (orgue, keyboards) Johan Wermeille (drums) Willliam Jacquemet (trombone) Julien Revilloud (guitar) In a universe with no limits, small musical particles called Quarks combine to create an explosive musical project akin to the Big Bang, origin of all matter. The impossible to classify Quarkstet are four musicians with a strong rhythmic outline and spirited melodies on the keyboard. The result is a mind-blowing and hypnotic adventure to the heart of quantum physics, the origin of the Quarkstet show. From the cold expanses of the universe to the african fire via secret Armenia, Olivier Magarotto and his men will take you on an ever-expanding trip where the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. Pauline Ganty 4tet (CH) <><><><><><><><><><><>< SWEET BASILE Wednesday 15 April | Caveau open from 20:00 to 01:00 Pauline Ganty (vocals) Fabien Iannone (bass) Marc Méan (percussion) Dominic Egli (drums) The Pauline Ganty Quartet offer a truly hypnotic experience. The melody verges on poetry while supporting with brio a voice that guides us through musical spaces of which the limits are pushed back. Very personal compositions, an aerial tempo and revisited French songs in a very intimate atmosphere will carry you away. Time is put on hold, gravity lessens its hold and emotions take you on a musical trip. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 Simon Spiess Trio (CH) <><><><><><><><><><><> DAS SCHLAGZEUG Tuesday 14 April | Caveau open from 20:00 to 01:00 Simon Spiess (reeds) Bänz Oester (bass) Daniel Mudrack (drums) Brought together around the fascinating saxophonist Simon Spiess, holder of several cultural prizes in his country, the members of the trio put the pleasure of playing together above all else. The musicians have been interpreting their own compositions since they founded the band in 2008. Their latest album, Round 4, was born from their mix of passion, trust and enthusiasm, as well as their tour through Europe. The trio will be passing through Cully, a good occasion to discover the talent of these three musicians who although they tend to stray a bit on their way, always get to their goal. The Treichler Pizzi Trontin Expérience (CH) <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> THBBC Residency Friday 10th and 17th , Saturday 11th and 18th, Thursday 16th April. Caveau open from 20:00 to 02:00 Franz Treichler (vocals) Bernard Trontin (drums) Cesare Pizzi (keyboards) Under the name of The Treichler Pizzi Trontin Experience, this concert presents itself as a laboratory of ideas, a space for exploration that aims to give the public the occasion of witnessing the birth of a new creation. The three Young Gods members will be residents of the tHBBC for public jam sessions. A pure exploration of sounds. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 CULLY JAZZ FESTIVAL a few words… The 33rd edition of the Cully Jazz Festival will take place from 10th to 18th of April. With 9 days of music, 30 paying concerts and 70 free concerts, the Cully Jazz Festival has become a not-to-be-missed event for amateurs of jazz and warm ambiences. In 2014, over 65'000 people walked through the narrow streets, wine cellars and along the lake-side in Cully. For the past 30 years, the Cully Jazz Festival has stayed true to the values which have contributed to its success: the quality of its musical programme, the committed volunteers, and the loyal audience, all made possible thanks to a wonderful natural location and warm hospitality. Jazz in all its forms Every year, the village of Cully celebrates Jazz with prestigious, crowd-pleasing concerts. At the same time, curious festival-goers wishing to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the place can wander freely between a myriad of wine cellars, constituting the OFF Festival. It is, without doubt, the blend of the IN Festival’s paying concerts and the OFF Festival’s free concerts that attract more visitors every year. On its three stages – Chapiteau, Next Step and Temple – the IN Festival can pride itself on having welcomed prestigious artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Wayne Shorter, Gilberto Gil, Madeleine Peyroux, Marianne Faithfull, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Charles Lloyd, Jan Garbarek, Carla Bley, Marcus Miller, Michel Petrucciani, John Scofield, Ahmad Jamal and Monty Alexander. The OFF Festival consists of 13 cafés and wine cellars spread throughout the village. It provides a springboard for many young Swiss Jazz players; indeed, musicians playing at the OFF Festival often find themselves on the Festival IN program a few years later. A festival in the heart of the Lavaux Located on the shores of Lake Geneva, in the heart of the Lavaux World Heritage site, Cully is a wine-growing village of exceptional charm. For the last 30 years, its inhabitants have been opening their doors, their cellars, and even sometimes their living rooms to musicians, allowing an inimitable feeling of sharing and conviviality. Thus, lovers of quality music, elegant wines and good company gather in a lively Festival thanks to the generosity of Cully’s inhabitants. The festival could not take place without the help of volunteer staff. Even though the operational management of the festival is the responsibility of a team of professionals, rising from 2 to 9 as the year progresses, the organizing committee is made up of 11 members, all of whom are volunteers. Their work is supported during the 9 days of the festival by the 480 volunteers who work in the different sectors of the Festival. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 CULLY JAZZ FESTIVAL a few figures… OVERVIEW 33rd edition, 2015 65,000 spectators in 2013 Approximately 480 volunteers in 2014, including an organising committee of 11 people 9 paid workers, (2 of whom work all year round), representing 3.6 full time posts for the 2015 edition. 28.9% of Swiss artists in 2015 (Festival IN) Budget of 2.1 million for 2015 FESTIVAL IN 2014 37 paying concerts and 3 stages • • • Chapiteau (seating capacity: 900, standing capacity: 1,400), NextStep (seating capacity: 300, standing capacity: 500), Temple (seating capacity: 300) FESTIVAL OFF 2014 Approximately 70 free concerts 13 cafés & wine cellars CONNECTIVITY 130,000 visits to the www.cullyjazz.ch website between January and April 2013 26,000 subscribers to the newsletter 13,200 tickets sold in 2013 8’500 Facebook likes 4’500 Twitter followers ABOUT WINE 45 winemakers from the Lavaux represented in the Festival’s drinks’ selection 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 BUDGET 2015 Budget of CHF 2'125'000 .TAKINGS F&B 11% Billetterie 38% 22% Autres recettes Soutiens privés (sponsoring, partenariats, publicités) 2% Soutiens institutionnels 27% EXPENSES 8% 1% Frais artistiques Logistique 11% 25% Infrastructure F&B 10% Communication 9% Charges salariales 18% 18% Autres charges d'exploitation Taxes 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 CULLY JAZZ FESTIVAL The organisation THE ORGANISATION order) COMMITTEE 2014-2015 (in alphabetical Since 4 November 1997, the Cully Jazz Festival has become a private law association. Visually, Anaëlle has produced a kaleidoscopic effect by drawing abstract, organic or geometric forms, which build up and harmonise like a musical composition. Declinable ad infinitum, this principle offers her the means to compose different visuals, depicting all of the Festival’s richness, its energy, music and its festival-goers. Anaëlle has created three posters with different universes for the Festival: ¨ Aquatic universe Vegetal-organic universe Univers géométrique ABOUT THE ARTIST, ANNAËLLE CLOT Anaëlle Clot (1988, Lausanne) lives and works in Lausanne as a graphic designer and artist. After studying visual communication at the École Romande d’Art et de Communication (ERACOM), she was employed in 2009 as graphic designer at the studio KO in Yverdon, then in 2012 at the Atelier Cocchi in Lausanne where she is still working. At the same time, she launched the fanzine “Le Dévaloir” with Laura Morales and Vanessa Besson, which aims to popularise different means of artistic expression through an eclectic content. The publication has achieved critical success in French-speaking Switzerland. Since 2012, Anaëlle Clot has dedicated herself to drawing alongside her other activities. Fascinated by fantasy worlds, the artist adapts chimeras, kaleidoscopes or fantastical plants, which come to life under a meticulous plume. Anaëlle explores the richness of a dense and wonderful universe. 33rd Edition 10-18 April 2015 Her work has been exhibited several times in Switzerland, notably at the café-gallery L'AT-E-L-I-E-R in Lausanne / Grafik 14 in Zürich / Galerie Trait Noir in Fribourg « Simili Dream »… and has been shown at several cultural events such as Pictobello in Vevey / Aperti in Lausanne / DROP 1 and 2 in Lausanne.
