Joseph Bogdan
M.Arch., OAA, FRAIC
Joseph Bogdan received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University
of Manitoba and a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard
University, where he studied under Josep Lluís Sert and Fumihiko Maki. He
was recipient of the RAIC Medal and the AIA Edward Langley scholarship.
Following graduation, Joe returned to Prack and Prack Architects in Hamilton,
where he designed the Massey Medal honouree McMaster University Physical
Education Complex. In 1965, Joe joined John B. Parkin and Associates as
Head of Urban Design. His five-year tenure included the design of the
Toronto Sheraton Centre, Place du Canada, and St. John’s City Hall.
Since opening his own practice, Joe has designed a wide range of projects
including the master plan and redevelopment of the Eaton’s College Street
site; Hyde Park Village, Tampa; and new community master plans in Pankow
Nord Berlin, Prague, and Vienna. With his good friend and colleague
John Preston, NSAA, FRAIC, Joe designed three projects that each won a
Canadian Architect Award of Excellence: the DND Ship Repair Complex,
the Pockwock Water Treatment Facility, and the Forum Mixed-Use Complex.
Joe’s international work also includes a mixed-use tower in Shanghai, and
“Science City”, the adjunct campus to the University of Sharjah, UAE.
Currently, his work includes the design of a new city of one million in Kuwait
and an equestrian-focused resort community in Qatar.
Joe has been fortunate to have the support of his wife for the past 55 years,
Dr. Deanne Bogdan, Professor Emerita University of Toronto, as well as the
joy of daughters Elisabeth Bogdan, MA Royal College of Art, London, UK,
and Stasia Bogdan, B.Arch., OAA here in Toronto, and their husbands and
children.
Throughout his career, Joe has served on the Toronto Society of Architects
and OAA committees; participated as thesis jury member at the University of
Toronto, lectured on urban design at York University and Queen’s University,
and is a Fellow of McLaughlin College. His community work includes a 15year tenure as Board Member and President of the Don Mills Foundation for
Seniors and Governor of the Moatfield Farm Historical Foundation.

A.J. Diamond
OC, O.Ont., D.Eng.(Hon), B.Arch., M.Arch., MA, OAA, FRAIC
A.J. Diamond’s degrees include a Bachelor of Architecture (with Distinction)
from the University of Cape Town, a Master of Arts in politics, philosophy
and economics from Oxford University and a Master of Architecture from
the University of Pennsylvania. At Oxford, he earned a Rugby Blue.
Mr. Diamond is a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and
the Canadian Institute of Planners and an Honorary Fellow of the American
Institute of Architects. Honorary doctorates include Engineering from
DalTech and Law from the University of Toronto. He is a recipient of the
University of Cape Town Vice-Chancellor’s medal and is a Senior Fellow
of Massey College. Mr. Diamond is a RAIC Gold Medalist, recipient of the
Ontario Association of Architects Lifetime Achievement Award, the Jane
Jacobs Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Urban Institute, a
member of the Order of Ontario and an Officer of the Order of Canada.
A.J. Diamond is the founding member of Diamond Schmitt Architects Inc.,
which has been the recipient of numerous awards for design and sustainability.
The firm has been named one of the 50 Best Managed Companies in Canada.
Mr. Diamond’s work includes the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing
Arts, Toronto; La Maison Symphonique, Montreal; Harman Center for the
Performing Arts, Washington D.C.; the new Mariinksy Theatre, St. Petersburg;
Israeli Foreign Ministry, Jerusalem; Southbrook Winery, Niagara; Banff Centre
revitalization, Alberta; and Life Science complexes for McGill and UBC. He is
currently working on projects in Canada, the USA, Switzerland, and the UK.
He has served as member of the Ontario Human Rights Commission,
Chairman of the Design Advisory Committee for the National Capital, and
Commissioner of the Greater Toronto Area Task Force.
Three exhibitions have been held of Mr. Diamond’s sketches and paintings.
His lecture tours have included Australia, the UK, Italy, Czech Republic, and
South Africa. Publications include Insight and Onsite (Douglas & McIntyre),
Sketches from Here and There (Douglas & McIntyre), and Words and Watercolours
by A.J. Diamond.

Milton Katz
B.Arch., OAA, MRAIC
Milton Katz was born in Toronto and attended Harbord Collegiate Institute.
In 1962 he graduated with a Bachelor of Archtiecture degree from the
University of Toronto.
In 1966 Milton opened his own office and has been involved in the planning
of industrial, residential and restoration projects.
Milton presently continues to practise.

Morris Melamed
B.Arch., OAA, MRAIC
Morris Melamed was born in Montreal, Quebec and graduated with a Bachelor
of Architecture from McGill University in 1958. After graduation he worked
for two years with the architectural firm of Ross, Fish, Duchesne & Barrett
in Montreal.
Between 1960 and 1968, Melamed practised in Montreal as a partner in the
firm of Fish, Melamed, Croft and Grainger, Architects after becoming a
member of the Ordre des architectes du Québec (Quebec Association of
Architects).
In 1966, Melamed became a member of the Ontario Association of Architects.
In 1968, the firm became Melamed, Croft and Grainger, Architects and
moved to Ottawa. The firm continued to practise until 1979.
Since 1979, the firm of Morris Melamed Architect has continued to practise
as a sole practitioner.

Barry Padolsky
B.Arch., M.Sc. (Urban Design), OAA, FRAIC, CAHP, RCA
Barry Padolsky was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1939. He attended the local
elementary school (Machray) and “Tech” (St. John’s Technical High School),
before obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the University of
Manitoba in 1961. In 1970, thanks to a Canada Council for the Arts grant, he
earned a Master’s degree in Urban Design, M.Sc. (Social Sciences) from the
University of Edinburgh while living part time in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
In 1965, Barry became a member of the Ontario Association of Architects
and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, becoming a RAIC Fellow
in 1987. In 2003, he achieved membership at the Canadian Association of
Heritage Professionals, and became member of the Royal Canadian Academy
of Arts in 2006.
Barry is a practising Ottawa-based architect, urban designer, and heritage
consultant. He is the founder of Barry Padolsky Associates Inc., Architects
(BPA), starting the practice in 1969. He has led his firm in realizing over
160 major architectural, urban design and heritage conservation projects as
well as hundreds of smaller projects in Canada’s capital. BPA has received
32 national, provincial, and civic design awards, including 22 for heritage
conservation. The awards include the Massey Medal; the Governor’s General
Award for Residential Design; the OAA Award of Excellence, and the
Chicago Atheneum International Architectural Award.
In the field of heritage conservation, BPA has executed over 60 heritage
restoration, rehabilitation and adaptive re-use projects. Prominent
achievements include the 160 million dollar rehabilitation of the Victoria
Memorial Museum Building, home of the Canadian Museum of Nature
(BPA/ KPMB / GLCRM Joint Venture Architects) and the rehabilitation of
Ottawa’s Byward Market Building.
Barry has been a heritage and urban planning advocate since 1972, when he
was Co-Chair of the Citizens’ Committee to save Ottawa’s Rideau Convent.
He has served on public boards and committees and is currently Vice-Chair
of the City of Ottawa Built Heritage Sub-Committee. Barry is an occasional
theatre set, graphic and exhibit designer.

Allan Rae
B.Arch., OAA, MRAIC, ARIBA
Allan Rae was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, spending the first 25 years
of his life on the Toronto Islands. An avid sailor, Allan has had his hand on
the tiller of a sail boat since he was 10 years old. He attended Island Public
School and Jarvis Collegiate before studying at the University of Toronto’s
School of Architecture between 1956 and 1960. Allan studied under the
mentorship of James A. Murray, James Ackland and Eric Arthur, and was
President of the Architectural Society in 1960.
Between 1960 and 1961, he worked as a Junior Designer at Colletti Brothers
in Boston, and lectured in the second-year Architectural Design and History
course at the Boston Architectural Club’s syllabus program.
In 1961, Allan took a passenger freighter from Montreal across the Atlantic
and up the Thames to London, England. He bought a 150cc VESPA scooter
and wandered from Aalto’s Town Hall in Saynatsalo in darkest Finland, down
to Le Corbusier’s Unité d’habitation on the sunny Mediterranean - two of the
many highlights of an architectural pilgrimage (and extensive wine-tasting)
throughout Western Europe.
Between 1961 and 1964, Allan was a Senior Designer at Howard Lobb &
Partners in London, England, and in 1963 he became a member of the Royal
Institute of British Architects. Between 1964 and 1984 he was a Design
Associate and then Design Partner with Bregman & Hamman, where he
worked on numerous projects including the Master Plan for Harbour Square
and 33 Harbour Square, Toronto, as well as the Variety Village Indoor Track
and Training Facility for Able and Challenged Athletes in Scarborough.
In 1965, he became a member of the Ontario Association of Architects, and
served on various committees. Since 1984, Allan has been Principal at Allan D.
Rae Architect Inc., working on a wide range of projects including the Cowie
Residence, Toronto; Quaker Village Prototypes, Uxbridge; 96 St. Patrick
Street Condos, Toronto; the Roddy Retreat, Balsam Lake; the MacFarlane
Retreat, Mulmur Hills; and YMCA Child Care Centres across the Greater
Toronto Area.
