Loudness control and
metering on every level
The control of loudness has become a serious issue in digital TV and multiple platform
broadcast around the world. As such, the European Broadcast Union established a
working party many years ago to determine ways of assessing loudness to address the
use of disparate reference levels. This research culminated in the publication of
recommendation ITU-R BS.1770-2 ‘Algorithms to measure audio programme loudness
and true peak audio level.’ The result is a definition of a reliable objective measurement
of the subjective programme loudness, allowing material from varying sources to be
compared impartially and the loudness matched with a high degree of consistency. In
addition, the EBU issued the R128 recommendation guideline to define ‘Loudness
normalisation and permitted maximum level of audio signals.’
In the UK, the Digital Production Partnership (DPP), an initiative formed by the BBC, ITV,
C4, Sky, Channel Five, S4C and UKTV to help producers and broadcasters maximise the
potential benefits of digital production, has agreed a common file format for file-based
delivery of programmes, which includes conformity of stereo and 5.1 track layout and
adherence to the EBU R128 Loudness standard. This new DPP technical standard has
important implications for facilities providing finished programmes and content to
broadcasters, specifically in reference to the loudness monitoring and metering of
such content.
As these and other loudness standards gain traction in the UK and Europe those in the
media supply chain are adopting a mix of hardware and software technologies for both
linear and non-linear environments. HHB has a comprehensive selection of products that
enable audio professionals involved in OB and live production, post production, playout
and archive to integrate these new standards into their workflow.
RTW TM3
TC Electronic LM6 Radar
Loudness Meter
TC Electronic TouchMonitor
TM9
LM6 features mono, stereo or 5.1
metering for most major DAWs.
Loudness history is displayed in a
single, easy-to-read, radar-like view
and each revolution can span from one
minute to 24 hours.
The TouchMonitor TM9 is a standalone audio and loudness meter
solution featuring a 9" touchscreen
with highly flexible layout options and
an array of software choices,
including the Surround Sound
Analyser, multichannel Real-Time
Analyser, Loudness and SPL,
Premium PPM and Vectorscope, and
the high resolution Radar Display for
momentary values and history,
enhanced with numerical display of
measuring time and loudness range.
The LM6 employs a fully synchronous,
high-headroom design in order to also
display true-peak warnings and truepeak bar graphs correctly; and it
conforms to all of the major broadcast
standards. It is also available in Audio
Units, VST, AAX, AudioSuite and RTAS
plug-in formats.
The TM3 Touch Monitor is designed
with a 4.3-inch touchscreen that allows
for horizontal and vertical placement.
The TM3 is compact and controlled
using a touch-sensitive display. In
addition to PPM and true-peak
instruments, the TM3 offers
comprehensive loudness metering in
compliance with all globally relevant
standards: EBU R128, ITU BS.17702/1771, ATSC A/85, and ARIB. The
basic version handles analogue and
digital stereo audio while the 5.1 option
supports 6-channel digital inputs.
DK Technologies DK1, DK2
DK-Technologies’ Stereo, Multichannel
and Loudness Meters are a compact
and cost-efficient option for accurate
metering and measurement of
loudness, stereo and 5.1 audio signals,
with advanced metering options like the
Surround Starfish Display and the new
Moving Coil Meter Emulation. Choose
between the DK1 Compact Stereo and
Loudness Meter or the DK2 Compact
5.1 Surround and Loudness Meter.
TC Electronic LM2 Precision Loudness and True Peak Meter
LM2 provides a stereo loudness and true-peak level meter with a font panel display that
lets you measure, correct and convert audio to comply with broadcast standards. It
displays EBU R128 and ATSC A/85 loudness values and has a 24-hour logging
capability. It can also be used as a standards-compliant gain normaliser with true-peak
limiting. Also available as a plug-in for all major DAWs.
