Dwarf Flowering Almond Prunus glandulosa Fabulous March bloomer! This little deciduous shrub grows 3’-5’ tall and wide. Full sun to light shade; moist, well-drained soils. Attractive, small-leafed foliage summer and fall, takes a brief rest in winter, and then bursts into a virtual fountain of gorgeous, fully double, cotton-candy pink & white flowers that cover the branches so densely they look like pink feather boas. Angelonia – Serena Series Angelonia angustifolia Serena series TM Angelonia is a spreading annual with upright flower spikes that resemble miniature snapdragons. The Serena TM are available in white, pink or purple. Full sun, 12”-18” tall, blooms summer until frost. Heat tolerant – can reseed. A Texas Superstar! Dwarf Barbados Cherry Malpighia glabra ‘Nana’ Heidi Sheesley of Treesearch Farms A unique, tough, & colorful native shrub with clusters of small pink & white flowers spring, summer, & fall. Then, after each bloom cycle, producing an abundance of red cherry-like fruit. Puts on an unbelievable show of color in the fall! Tiny foliage, tight, compact rounded growth habit, & drought tolerant once established. Averages 3’-4’ tall. Sun, light shade. Wildlife & Bird Food! American Beautyberry Callicarpa americana One of our finest native, deciduous shrubs for late summer and fall color. Famous for the clusters of berries that form on arching stems in late summer. Berry color ranges from plum pink to rosy-purple. Showiest after the leaves drop in late fall. Needs understory conditions, best in part shade. Average 5’-6’. Prune in late winter for a fuller, lusher plant. Birds! Compact White Buddleia Buddleia sp. ‘Compact White’ A gorgeous, tough buddleia that withstands our heat and humidity. Its silvery foliage provides contrast in the garden. Prolific, fragrant white panicles cover the plant spring through fall. Butterflies & hummingbirds. Sun to part sun. Grows 3’-4’ x 3’-4’. White Waterfalls Clerodendron Clerodendron wallichii Heidi Sheesley of Treesearch Farms Extremely glossy, dark green, tropical-looking foliage. Incredible 10” – 12” weeping panicles of soft creamy-white flowers with red calyxes. Flowers are reminiscent of ‘Blue Butterfly Bush’ in shape. Responds well to pruning and can be grown as a shrub or small tree. Gorgeous! Light shade & a moist, well-drained soil. Native Purple Coneflower ‘Magnus’ Echinacea purpurea ‘Magnus’ Blooming spring to fall, Purple Coneflower ‘Magnus’ is named for Swedish nurseryman Magnus Nilson who carefully selected for 10 years – looking for fine form, dark hue and very horizontal petals. A butterfly attractor & overall fantastic plant for the garden during our hot summers. The flower stalks can reach 2’ tall or more. Coneflowers like sun to light shade,and good drainage. Coral Fountain Plant Russelia equisetiformis Texture! Color! A very fine foliaged, lush, perennial shrub that forms a beautiful mound of 3’-4’ slender graceful stems of tubular red-orange flowers all summer & fall! Sun, part shade. Hummingbirds!!! Cuban Gold Duranta Duranta erecta ‘Cuban Gold’ Rich chartreuse foliage makes this shrubby perennial a marvelous accent even in the toughest summer heat. Adapts well to containers or creates a unique glow in mixed borders. Occasionally produces light blue flowers, but choose this one for the foliage! 4’-6’ tall. Full to part sun. Sweet Memory Duranta Duranta erecta ‘Sweet Memory’ Photo by Heidi Sheesley of TreeSearch Farms A fabulous, long blooming root hardy shrub that’s covered with large, tight clusters of purple flowers edged in white. It blooms in heavy cycles from mid spring thru fall & also produces dangling clusters of yellow berries. Durantas form large full 4’-6’ shrubs or can be trained into small 6’-8’ “trees”. Full sun or light shade. A must for any Butterfly garden!!! Giant Cigar Plant Cuphea micropetala . Every fall, this majestic cuphea puts on a show in the garden. It’s bi-colored yellow and orange tubular flowers are like small megaphones calling all butterflies and hummingbirds! Heidi Sheesley of TreeSearch Farms Satin Checks Ginger Kaempferia elegans ‘Satin Checks’ A spectacular Kaempferia! An absolute must ground cover for shade gardens with its eye-popping bright green leaves with fabulous purplish checkerboard spots and satiny sheen. An exquisite 1” purple flower appears almost daily from midsummer to fall. Goes dormant in winter. Shade. Moist, well-drained bed. Difficult to find in the trade. Dwarf Hamellia Hamellia patens ‘Compacta’ Heidi Sheesley of Treesearch Farms A tight, compact version of the Hummingbird Bush with semi-glossy, lance-shaped, green leaves tinged with burgundy. It blooms all season, producing terminal clusters of tubular, orange-red & yellow flowers, attracting hummingbirds from all over! Averages 3’ tall. Full sun. Hummingbirds! Hamelia patens Hummingbird Bush or Firebush This large shrub/small tree is native to Mexico, but thrives in this area. It is root hardy, and will make a 4’ – 5’ mound in one summer. 'Peppermint Flare' A hard-to-beat, root hardy hibiscus with a bushy, 4’x4’ growth habit & a profusion of 9” flowers that emerge light pink and age to white with wild red flecks throughout. Lufkin Red has exceptional flowers, about 6” across & outstanding disease resistance. Although it is named “red”, the flowers are actually a deep, rich pink with a red center. Sun to partial shade - can get 6’ tall x 5’ wide, but can be pruned to keep fuller and bushier. Dies to the ground each winter and builds a large multistemmed clump after several seasons of regrowth. Helps repel mosquitos. Great lemon fragrance when brushed against – leaves and stalks used in cooking. Plant in sun to partial sun. Root hardy most winters. Starburst Penta Penta lanceolata ‘Starburst’ Starburst is an old-fashioned penta that the hummingbirds and butterflies LOVE! Non-stop blooming, no dead heading required – each plant carries dozens of clusters at one time. Can reach 3’ x 3’ – cut back hard in early spring. Root hardy in harsh winters. Sun, part sun or shade – this penta is easy to grow anywhere! A must for every garden. The self-cleaning lanceolatas bloom non-stop with no dead-heading. They can reach up to 3’ tall and their flower clusters are 3” across thereby adding both height and color to sun, part-sun or light shade gardens. White Plumbago Plumbago auriculata ‘Alba’ Perennial shrub with continuous display of clusters of white, phlox-like flowers from spring to frost. Grows 3’-4’. Drought tolerant once established. Purple Porterweed Stachytarpheta jamicensis A 2' - 4' tall bushy herbaceous plant with long, elegant flower spikes of purple flowers almost constantly blooming from spring to fall. Prostrate Rosemary is an evergreen cascading shrub that mounds to about 2’ tall eventually and cascades over anything; walls, landscape timbers, rock, out of containers, etc. Use it near walkways where you can enjoy the fragrance of the foliage. Rosemary is covered with small blue flowers in the winter & early spring. Drought tolerant. Full sun or light shade & must have good drainage. Great for cooking. Little Boy Blue Salvia Salvia azurea ‘Little Boy Blue’ Also known as Dwarf Pitcher Sage, this Greg Grant introduction is a compact seedling selection of our native East Texas salvia. Sky blue blossoms stand out in the landscape. Grows 2’-3’, but can be kept smaller with tip pruning throughout the season. Blooms spring until frost. Full sun, well drained soil. Orange Shrimp Plant Justicia fulvicoma Native to Mexico, this wonderful hummingbird attractor forms a 3' mound of soft, apple-green leaves & produces 3" spikes of overlapping plum-red bracts with bright orange flowers. These spikes eventually lengthen to 6"7" & resemble large red shrimp. Responds well to pruning, is root hardy, grows in sun or light shade, & a moist, well drained soil. Hummingbirds! Heidi Sheesley of Treesearch Farms Mexican Firecracker Tuberose Polyanthes X brundrantii Beautiful red-orange form of the oldfashioned favorite! This variety offers tall spikes of sunset red flowers that attract hummingbirds. They make an unusual, but long-lasting cut flower. Lemon Verbena Aloysia citrodora Lemon verbena is one of the most strongly scented and intense of the lemon scented plants. It is used in making perfumes & soaps, as well as flavoring for cooking.
