THE WINE COUNTRY ONTARIO EXPERIENCE
TOURING, TASTING AND
TOASTING ANY TIME OF YEAR
Start here and get a taste of the pleasures and possibilities of
Ontario’s Wine Regions. Four appellations comprise what is quickly
becoming a burgeoning wine industry and a great delight for Ontarians
who appreciate all the fresh, flavourful benefits so close to home.
Follow this sign and prepare to
uncork an adventure of delicious
proportions as we embark on a tour
of Ontario’s dynamic wine country.
Whether you’re guided by taste,
culture, healthy activities or
encounters with the unexplored, Ontario’s wine
regions are filled with pleasures and possibilities
that will appeal to all your senses. Inside, we invite
you to find inspiration for those explorations – to
use this guide as a ready reference for making the
most of your excursions, whatever your appetites
may be. Start by referring to the Stay, Dine & Play
section of this guide, which provides a listing for
restaurants, accommodations and attractions
in these areas. It’s all right here in your hands and,
as you’ll soon see, it’s all so close to home. Go
ahead and get a taste of what’s in store for your
next adventure.
Consider Ontario’s wine country as a four-season
affair. Those carefree meanderings from winery
to winery are a natural summer draw, as are the
autumn months when the province is in its full
majestic glory. Yet a winter getaway is a glorious
option for couples and groups alike while a spring
sojourn lets you see just how vibrant the activity
is in these communities as they welcome the
warmth and prepare for the bustling crowds.

VARIETY, PERSONALITY,
DISTINCTION, TERROIR
Ontario’s four established primary wine destinations encompass the Niagara
Escarpment and Twenty Valley, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Lake Erie North Shore
and Pelee Island, and Prince Edward County. Outside of these regions you’ll
also find wineries within a short drive from Toronto in Central Ontario.
Wine may play the starring role
in your explorations but
Ontario’s surrounding
landscape provides a stunning
backdrop. Beyond those fertile
stretches of vines are
picturesque country roads,
impressive architecture,
panoramic lakeside views and
much more. As you leisurely
chart your way around these
regions, be sure to make time
to indulge your sense of place.

VINTAGE ONTARIO Variety, personality,
distinction, terroir… These are the new
watchwords of Ontario wine. Yes, gone are the
days of painting our wine industry with one
broad brush stroke. Rather, Ontario’s four
established wine regions are earning stellar
accolades for producing an array of exceptional
wines while enticing visitors with a four-season
calendar of culinary indulgences and cultural
alternatives. Encompassing the Niagara Escarpment
and Twenty Valley, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Prince
Edward County, and Lake Erie North Shore and
Pelee Island, Ontarians are faced with the enviable
dilemma of having a tempting selection of
getaway destinations to choose from that are
literally at our doorstep.
How to take in the best of what Ontario has to
offer? Options abound. Book a B&B weekend in the
Closson Chase Winery in Prince Edward County
heart of a region within easy striking distance of
several wineries. Consider a couples’ weekend
splitting time between spa treatments, sipping local
wines and sampling regional fare on a gastronomic
adventure. Cycling with a group of friends is also
fast becoming one of the more popular alternatives.
You can pedal at a pace that lets you take in the
sights while planning your loop rides to drop in on
a number of wineries en route. There’s never any
shortage of ways to see it, taste it and share it.
Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and, naturally, Icewine
have already attracted a loyal following. Consider
these an entry point to each region – an
opportunity to sample the celebrated names, but
then take your tastes in whichever direction suits
your preferences. You’ll
discover these stellar wines

INTERNATIONAL ACCLAIM There are a number
of varietals that are earning showcase appeal both
at home and beyond our borders thanks to Ontario’s
distinct growing conditions. What better way to
guide your explorations than to focus on some of
your favourite varietals and take in a sampling of
what a region has to offer. Riesling, Pinot Noir,

Between your sipping and sampling en route, be sure
to take in some gallery hopping or theatregoing, dine
on the fresh local flavours prepared by star chefs,
explore the backroads and byways, and of course
reserve time to indulge all the hospitable comforts of
fabulous accommodations. You may prefer to plan all
the details in advance or simply feel moved by the
spirit of spontaneity – whatever the case, you’ll
always find a full menu of possibilities all year long.
Consider a couples’ weekend
splitting time between spa
treatments, sipping local wines
and sampling regional fare on
a gastronomic adventure.
THEATRE AND FESTIVALS Some wine, some food,
some culture… whatever destination suits your style,
take the opportunity to seek out a dynamic range of
local music, theatre and culinary festivals that have
taken root in wine country. Pair your wine tours with
some theatregoing, none better than at the legendary
Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, which
celebrates its 50th season this year. In Prince Edward
County, plan a weekend around the maple run in
spring, the Jazz Festival in August or autumn’s
popular TASTE! event. Naturally, wine festivals
continue to evolve in all these regions, including the
Shores of Erie International Wine Festival as well as
January’s hotly anticipated annual Icewine event in
Niagara. This is a mere scratching of the surface, as
there is ample opportunity to take in activities and
events throughout the year.
SPLENDID SPAS While indulging your many
appetites, feed your soul too by reserving some
spa time. An array of spas have emerged in wine
country, providing an assortment of pampering
treatments designed to help you relax and revive.
Book in for a weekend stay on site or simply set
aside some time to slip away and give in to your
bliss. Be sure to check for countless package deals
available throughout these regions to make the
most of your visit.

SHOPPING As Ontario wine country thrives, it has
helped contribute to stronger local economies and
the development of many eclectic businesses,
which makes shopping in these areas an entirely
refreshing experience. The locavore food

The joy of pairing is that there are no absolutes.
There’s no adherence to some secret code shared
among the sommelier set, nor is it so rigid as to still
insist upon white with poultry and red with beef.
Rather, matching wine and food is an opportunity to
expand your palate. With a bit of guidance you can
easily discover a world of possibilities. Treat pairing
as a balancing act in which there are tastes and
textures, spicing and other subtleties to factor.
Consider complementing the spiciness or weight of
a dish with something equally substantial, or
contrast it with a lighter touch. What matters is an
open mind. From there, just trust your tastebuds!

spin-off businesses such as artisan cheese dairies,
bakeries, apiaries and other specialty food items.
Naturally, there are established communities of
artists and craftspeople that are enjoying a higher
profile with the increased exposure, while there is
no end of unique shops, antique sellers and other
fashionable finds and fascinations to unearth.

WORLD-CLASS FARE There’s a trend underway
that is finding a growing number of talented chefs
drawn to wine country. With such an accent on the
“eat local” ethos of the past few years, chefs are
relocating closer to the source for the food they put
on the table. They connect directly with suppliers
and are able to present the tastes of Ontario like
we’ve never experienced before. Many vineyards
are getting in on the act, collaborating with chefs
and opening restaurants to help showcase their
wines. It is literally a food chain of support. The
dining public are the main beneficiaries as the
effects ripple throughout the restaurant industry,
encouraging exceptional standards for fine dining,
but raising the game of establishments at every
level who are persuaded to respond to a food-savvy
audience with an appetite for fresh, fabulous food.

WORLD EXPOSURE
SERIOUSLY COOL
ONTARIO CHARDONNAY –
SERIOUSLY
WORLD-CLASS WINES
GAINING NOTORIETY There’s a genuine
fascination around some of Ontario’s more
prominent varietals these days as our wines
are commanding new respect among critics
and common enthusiasts alike.
Our cool climate conditions naturally lend
themselves to such high-profile varietals as
Chardonnay and Icewine, but Canadian
winemakers are earning a reputation for a
broader palette of production, too. Still, it is our
Chardonnays that are helping to establish a
beachhead and the world is waking up to the
fact that our New World wines command
respect and beg indulgence.
So what was that tipping point for Ontario So
COOL CLIMATE WINES
COLD WINTERS AND SHORT, HOT SUMMERS
PRODUCE REMARKABLE RESULTS.
Canadians have a remarkable
ability to make the most of a
constrained growing season.
It seems suitable, then, that
Ontario is earning a reputation
for cool climate wines, a style
that is quickly gaining favour
on the international stage. In
our climate, the vines draw
minerals from the soil for a
longer period and depend on
the entire season to fully ripen.
While there is a smaller yield, the resulting wine has
a complexity and elegance that properly reflect the
region’s ‘terroir’, and definitely has more character than
those grown in hotter climates with shorter seasons.
Read more at winecountryontario.ca
So what was that tipping point for Ontario
Chardonnays? Suggestions point to a high-profile
wine competition in Montreal in 2009 where one
of Le Clos Jordanne’s Chardonnays registered a
startling win. Placed against Chardonnays from
both California and the Burgundy region in
France, the vineyard’s 2005 Claystone Terrace
Chardonnay took first prize. Winning winemaker
Thomas Bachelder contested that any number of
Ontario vineyards could have triumphed. It was
part proclamation to the world and part challenge
for those unfamiliar with Ontario. The message
was clear: Ontario has arrived.
VQA Wine Excellence
Through a number of competitions both here
and abroad we are starting to see our wines
consistently post great results. What may have
been considered surprising releases in years
gone by are being greeted today with great
anticipation and are helping to usher in a new era
in which many more Ontario wines are poised to
garner greater notoriety.

Wine Country Ontario / 2011 Travel Guide
INTERNATIONAL PRAISE Jump to May 2010
and Ontario’s cool climate Chardonnays are
poised to make an even bigger splash as Canada
House in London, England, plays host to a
high-profile tasting event with the top U.K. wine
critics and industry professionals in attendance,
including Jancis Robinson, Steven Spurrier,
Oz Clarke and Charles Metcalfe, among others.
Organizer of the Seriously Cool Chardonnay
event, Bill Redelmeir of Southbrook Vineyards,
remarks that, “Attracting this number of top U.K.
wine critics for a single tasting is almost unheard
of; it is an accomplishment unto itself,” For
Ed Madronich, Chair of the Wine Council of
“I was amazed,”
Spurrier commented, following the tasting.
Steven Spurrier, Wine Connoisseur
Steven Spurrier is a British wine expert and wine connoisseur of international
renown. He famously organized the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976 and is a
well-respected author and wine journalist. Currently, he is the consultant
editor to Decanter, to which he is a monthly contributor.
Chardonnay is the most widely
produced VQA wine in Ontario.
The province’s expanding wine
industry now boasts 125 VQA
wineries; it’s estimated more
than 90 produce Chardonnay.
Ontario and proprietor of Flat Rock Cellars, it was
a scene to be cherished. “The excitement in the
room was unbelievable. This was an historic
moment for Canadian Wine.”
Steven Spurrier was effusive in his praise,
noting, “There was not a single poor wine there.
They all have an individual personality. They’re all
brilliantly well made. I’m very impressed.” Jancis
Robinson echoed these sentiments, noting that
the sheer variety was remarkable. “Ontario alone
can produce a vivid array of styles of Chardonnay,
some of which can hold their own with the
world’s finest.”
CONTINUED MOMENTUM As an encore to the
London event, this past March Ontario winemakers,
along with their British Columbia counterparts,
descended on New York City to partake in the
Seriously Cool Chardonnay event, an opportunity to
reach stateside wine writers and critics. Again, the
success of the gathering heralded a new chapter for
Ontario winemakers.
Commented renowned Canadian wine critic
Tony Aspler, who also headed the panel of judges
at the event: “New York wine critics are as tough as
those in London but they reacted to the Canadian
Chardonnays they tasted with surprise and delight.
What impressed them was the minerality and the
fine acidity they discovered in the wines – a
refreshing change from fruit-driven California
Chards.” Yes, encouraging signs.
As Ontario Chardonnays launch into the wider
world, we can confidently speculate that our
winemakers will be producing some other fabulous
varietals and that more people will be paying
attention. For Ontario wine lovers, that means the
opportunity to discover our greatness first and then
share it with your world.

The Smiths have been stone fruit growers for over a century on
this 100-acre Raleigh Township farm. The estate falls gracefully
from its limestone and granite gravel ridge to meet the north
shore of Lake Erie. Thirty years ago the first vines were planted
in old lakebed soils and in 2005 the winery doors opened.
Now, from a selection of over 20 varieties of traditional and
experimental varieties, winemaker George Smith produces
vintages of exceptional quality from this very special site. The
tasting room overlooks 50 acres of vineyards and the “Ruins of
Cedar Springs” while Lake Erie shimmers in the background.

began in the mid-’90s; Australian winemaker Philip Dowell
currently sources fruit from six estate vineyards, including a
small winery plot that delivers the powerful old-vine Chardonnay.
His awards span many styles, including new Cabernet-Shiraz,
Pinot Noir and Riesling. The Terrace remains an idyllic, popular
lunch destination.

ALVENTO WINERY
Bruno Moos and Elyane Grenier have transplanted their
winemaking passion and expertise from Tuscany. Establishing
their five-hectare site in 2001, they faced three difficult Ontario
winters, releasing tiny quantities of Nebbiolo, Viognier and
Cabernet-based reds in 2005. The choice of Nebbiolo, the
Piedmontese grape that makes Barolo, was based on climatic
similarity, and the early results are promising. And like Barolo
it is a wine for the cellar. Viognier (called Vio) is excellent, and
you can decide whether you want an oaked or unoaked style.
Overall, it’s a rewarding, off-the-beaten-path experience.

“The house that Riesling built,” Cave Spring Cellars stands
at the centre of the picturesque village of Jordan, though
its vineyards are a few kilometres west on the Beamsville

limestone-based soils in their premium, mature-vine CSV

Angelo Pavan – from sparkling to brilliant Icewine – are elegant
and exemplary, and Chardonnay also excels. Taut Pinot Noir,
Gamay and Cabernet Franc embrace the cool-climate spirit

Creekside Estate Winery
CREEKSIDE ESTATE WINERY
This charming, small, family-owned winery was established
in 2002. Located just outside Beamsville in the Lincoln
Lakeshore appellation with 20 acres, this vineyard produces
a variety of premium reduced crop, hand-picked whites and
reds. Latest award winners include: 2007 Gamay, 2007
Cabernet Franc/Merlot, 2008 Cab Franc, 2009 Rieslings,
2009 Chardonnay Musque, 2009 Chenin Blanc, and our
“must tastes”: 2007 Fine Port, 2009 Gewürztraminer and
2008 Vidal Icewine. Cornerstone also produces a variety
of fruit wines.
Since its inception in 1997, Creekside has delivered a relaxed,
friendly atmosphere and exceptional, bright wines. The wine
styling is decidedly bold, with winemaker Rob Power notching
all kinds of national and local medals for Broken Press and
Reserve Shiraz. Red and white Laura’s Blends are very
successful, as are recent Cuvée 2011 winners Sauvignon Blanc
Reserve and Viognier. The new Undercurrent series of one-off
single-barrel lots, available only at the winery, is reason enough
to visit. The outdoor grill deck is another: It’s open on summer
weekends and features local, seasonal fare by chef Mark Hand.

Along a serene back road near the Ball’s Falls Conservation

barns housing Calamus Estate Winery. The name Calamus,
Latin for arrow, was inspired by the many ancient artifacts
found in the region. Named in the “Top 10” at Intervin 2010,
the award-winning wines are produced from estate-owned
vineyards. Visitors to the rustic tasting room are routinely
greeted by the owners and knowledgeable staff that serve
samples of their Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Rieslings,
Gewürztraminer, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon,
Meritage blends and more. An upper-floor event room
accommodates large tour groups and is available for meetings

FIELDING ESTATE WINERY
Reflecting their Haliburton roots, the Fielding family has built
a winery with charming northern Ontario-lodge ambience – set
high on the Beamsville Bench, against the wooded Escarpment.
Since opening in 2005, Fielding’s success has come quickly,
capped by a top-10 berth in the 2009 Canadian Wine Awards.
Winemaker Richie Roberts produced head-turning 2007 reds,
including a CWA Gold Medal Meritage and a Cuvée-winning
Syrah. Vibrant, juicy, aromatic whites, like Pinot Gris,
Gewürztraminer and Riesling, are delicious every vintage.
Fielding participates in many regional wine events, but a trip
to the winery, summer or winter, is the best way to experience
its complete range of small production wines.

FEATHERSTONE WINERY & VINEYARD
David Johnson and Louise Engel have poured their hearts into
this 23 acres, eco-friendly estate tucked into the Escarpment
in the Twenty Mile Bench appellation. Insecticide-free, the
vineyard plants are trimmed by grazing sheep; grape-thieving
starlings are warded off by falcons that Engel has trained.
Pristine, racy Riesling best captures the terroir, both in
the Featherstone Black Sheep label and the Cuvée 2011
Award-winning Twenty-Twenty Seven brand by assistant
winemaker Kevin Panagapka. Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé and
Cabernet Franc – as well as Chardonnay aged in Canadian
oak – round out the portfolio. The veranda wrapping the
classic country farmhouse is one of the most tranquil spots
in Niagara for a weekend lunch.

Crown Bench, named for its elevated position at the crown of
the Beamsville Bench, boasts some of Niagara’s oldest vines –
some planted in the late 1960s. Here, Peter Kocsis and Livia
Sipos make Chardonnay, Bordeaux-variety reds and dessert
wines, all by a philosophy that insists on grape quality, low
yields and aging the wines before release. The winery’s more
innovative offerings include a chocolate-infused dessert wine
called Ambrosia and 2001 Eros, a late-picked Vidal aged five
years in barrel. The Bruce Trail and great Niagara Escarpment
vistas await visitors.
Flat Rock Cellars
FLAT ROCK CELLARS
Since opening Flat Rock in 2005, Ed Madronich has injected fun
and enthusiasm into both the wine and the winery experience.
Expect off-beat names like Twisted, Rusty Shed Chardonnay
and the new Riddled sparkling (all screw-capped). Theirs
is not the typical wine tour; why not try a two-hour workshop
called “In the Winemaker’s Boots” instead? Flat Rock’s
80 scenic acres of sloping vineyard, atop the Escarpment in
the Twenty Mile Bench appellation, focus on Chardonnay, Pinot
Noir, Riesling and a splash of Gewürztraminer. The much
awarded wines are marked by vibrancy and exuberance;
Nadja’s Riesling is consistently awarded among Canada’s
best, and the 2007 Chardonnay Reserve topped out at Cuvée.
The new Reserve range Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling and
one-off Rogues helped boost Flat Rock into the Top 20 at the
Canadian Wine Awards 2010.

Former Ontario trade diplomat Len Crispino was greatly
inspired by Amarone, fermented from dried (appassimento)
grapes. He and his wife Marisa planted 40 acres in Vineland
in 2001 and applied this Old World technique to a New World
setting. Joined by Louis (their sibling), they dried 100% of their
Cabernet Franc grapes, reminiscent of the iconic Quinterelli
wines. The innovation was then extended to not only all of their
reds but their whites as well. The proprietors have passionately
and exclusively positioned this boutique winery to a uniquely
Canadian interpretation of appassimento. The “foreign affair”
continues in the winery tasting room, where guests are
transported to the ceramic-tiled hearth of an Italian villa.
Harbour Estates Winery
HARBOUR ESTATES WINERY
Five generations of the Mowat family have farmed in Niagara;
the last two are responsible for Harbour Estates, which has
been growing grapes and making wine since 1999. The vineyard
is beautifully situated on the waterfront of Jordan Harbour’s
east shore in the Creek Shores appellation. Ken Mowat makes
a wide range of affordable wines, with notable success for
Riesling; Sauvignon Blanc; the white Chardonnay-Vidal blend
called Sunrise; and the red Cabernet-Merlot blend, Midnight.
Summer events on the property include live music acts – this
year’s Rock n’ Ribs Fest, in September, will feature classic
Canadian rockers April Wine – an 11th anniversary party and

FAMILY ESTATE WINERY
Founded in 1988 by the Speck family, Henry of Pelham is a
reliable name in Ontario wine. Brothers Paul, Matthew and
Daniel Speck play up their “sibling rivalry” in popular white
and red blends by the same name, but the portfolio runs much
deeper. Winemaker Ron Giesbrecht knows his Niagara reds,
having turned a hybrid grape called Baco Noir into a local icon,
but the Riesling Reserves (from maturing vines) and
Chardonnays are also classics. Cuvée Catharine bubbly is
quintessential Niagara; likewise, the Icewines are brilliant.
A visit to the recently expanded winery and cellar is a Niagara

HIDDEN BENCH VINEYARDS AND WINERY
Drive down the country lane that leads visitors through a
unique covered bridge to a restored 1867 Victorian barn. The
often photographed barn and hospitality area is a magnet for
all kinds of events including weddings and corporate functions.
This vast picturesque property on which Hernder Estates sits is
so breathtaking that it has caught the eye of many couples
tying the knot. Last year over 100 weddings, along with
countless corporate events, were held. There are daily tastings
and intimate winemaker’s dinners that showcase a wide range
of whites, reds and fruit wines. The grounds are able to
accommodate up to 400 guests. Bus tours are welcome! Take
a tour through the vineyard, production, barrel cellar and
bottling line, finish with a wine tasting. It is a great look at the
inner workings of a winery.
Owner Harald Thiel’s uncompromising attention to detail has
landed Hidden Bench in the Canadian Wine Awards’ top 10
every year since the winery opened in 2007 – with Nuit Blanche
named Canadian White Wine of the Year. This small, yet modern
and sophisticated, estate winery is tucked away on Locust Lane
in the Beamsville Bench appellation, essentially hidden by vines
(the nearby estate-owned Rosomel Vineyard site also provides
top fruit). HB’s primary focus is to showcase the terroir of the
Beamsville Bench through their award-winning Pinot Noir,
Chardonnay and Riesling. Limited-edition rarities like Tête de
Cuvée Chardonnay, and elegant Bordeaux blends La Brunante
and Terroir Caché, can be purchased at the winery as well as
at select restaurants. Fumé Blanc, Gewürztraminer and others
complete the impressive lineup.

MALIVOIRE WINE COMPANY
Innovation has been key to Martin Malivoire’s success since
he purchased prime vineyard acreage on the Beamsville Bench
in 1995, and opened his fascinating gravity-flow winery in an
elaborately recycled Quonset hut in 1998. First focusing on
varieties from northern France – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot
Gris and Gewürztraminer – he then began the slow process
of converting his 26-hectare vineyard to organic production.
He also created a “serious” dry rosé called Ladybug, and a
Musqué Spritz. Today, winemaker Shiraz Mottiar presides
over a range of vibrant and polished wines, from inexpensive
“Guilty Men” white and red blends to fine Gamay to classy,
single-vineyard Pinots and Chardonnays. Not to mention
Old Vines Foch, Albert’s Honour, almost the last bottling
of a red hybrid that once ruled Niagara.

from the charming boutique. Best known for aromatic whites
such as Diva, a Semillon-Sauvignon blend and Cuvée Gold
winner, as well as big reds and unique varietals of Petite
Verdot and Malbec, this third-generation, family-owned estate
is one stop not to be missed. A unique destination for
weddings, special events and corporate functions, the family

Niagara Escarpment & Twenty Valley
14F
In 1997, Michael Kacaba launched into the wine industry, preserving
a piece of prime vineyard benchland from a developer’s bulldozer.
Today, he is turning out multiple-award-winners at this
environmentally sustainable winery. Winemaker John Tummon
oversees a range of whites and reds, with ripe, elegant,
full-bodied, vintage-based reds attracting a loyal following.
The 2007 Syrah, from one of the oldest plantings in Canada,
was the first Ontario red wine to be named Red Wine of
the Year at the Canadian Wine Awards. The 2007 Cabernet
Franc had a strong showing at Cuvée 2011. The intimate,
neo-Victorian winery is set at the end of a curved driveway
lined with Canadian sugar maple, and a silver bridge crosses
a ravine, all offering a fine sense of the Niagara Escarpment
Bench terroir, as well as a view of the Toronto skyline across
Lake Ontario.

(JOHN HOWARD CELLARS OF DISTINCTION)
The Cellars of Megalomaniac sit on a 96-acre site of the
Vineland upper bench. Locals argue that it is the highest
vantage point on the Niagara Escarpment, with clear views
of the Toronto and Niagara Falls skylines – a must-see for
photographers. The unique underground cellar allows guests
a total tasting experience in the midst of a production and
barrel-aging facility. Of note are the Cabernet Sauvignon and
Merlot single varietals (all reds are aged in French oak for at
least 22 months). Sous Terre Cabernet Merlot Reserve 2007
took honours as the top limited edition red at Cuvée 2011.
Niagara veteran Sue-Ann Staff (proprietor of Sue-Ann Staff

MOUNTAIN ROAD WINE COMPANY
Canada’s most famous golfer entered the wine business in
2005, out of a personal love of wine and a desire to raise
money for the Mike Weir Foundation, which funds children’s
charities across the country. In a few short years, his label
has become the leading selling VQA brand in Vintages at the
LCBO. A Showpiece winery, hospitality centre and gallery
of Mike Weir’s golfing memorabilia is in the works. The
award-winning wine is made in conjunction with Château
des Charmes, drawing on its 150 hectares to create a focused
range of mid-priced varietals, including balanced Chardonnays,
and Sauvignon Blanc whites, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Merlot
reds, Icewine and Sparkling.
Back in 1983 Steve Kocsis first planted this dramatic
Beamsville Bench site – family owned since 1958 – but didn’t
begin producing wine until 1999, giving his inaugural wines a
head start in terms of richness and concentration. Sustainable
agricultural practices and a longer aging process speak to a
traditional focus; indeed, a visit to the winery is a glimpse into
the aging potential of Niagara wines: the current vintage for
reds is 2003. Steve’s son Richard and son-in-law Alberto
round out the team creating the winery’s show-stopping Vidal
Icewines (like the 2010 Cuvée Limited Edition winner 2004
vintage), plus rich Chardonnays, lively Rieslings and
concentrated Cabernet-based reds.

THE ORGANIZED CRIME WINERY
When Jan and Krystyna Tarasewicz opened their boutique
winery in 2006 in the heart of the Beamsville Bench, they
turned heads with the name on their label – and with the lively,
fruit-focused wines in the bottle. Far from glorifying mobsters,
the name stems from a now-humorous incident between
feuding Mennonite families. You’ll have to visit the winery
(or their whimsical website) for details. Consulting winemaker
Andrzej Lipinski crafts powerful whites and reds that catch
pure expression of their grapes, with some interesting
appassimento bottlings partially made from dried grapes.
Don’t miss the 2009 Gewürztraminer, Fume Blanc, Pinot Noir
and red Bordeaux blend called Download.

PENINSULA RIDGE ESTATES WINERY
When approaching Niagara wine country from the west,
Peninsula Ridge beckons with its grand Ontario-gothic,
red-brick Victorian house. Owners Norm Beal and Nancy
McNally opened the winery in 2000, focusing on making racy
yet rich Sauvignon Blancs, Chardonnays (especially unoaked
Inox Chardonnay) and Bordeaux reds from 42 owned acres
and neighbouring fruit on the Beamsville Bench. Rhône
varieties, like Syrah (red) and Viognier (white), were later
added to critical acclaim. In a beautifully restored barn, the
tasting room and banquet space are among the grandest
in Niagara, as are the great views across Lake Ontario.

RIDGEPOINT WINES
Fifteen years ago, chartered accountant Mauro Scarsellone
and his sister, Anna Gottardo, grasped Niagara’s potential and
began planting nine hectares of prime vineyard in the Twenty
Mile Bench appellation, much of it with Pinot Noir, Merlot and
Cabernet Sauvignon. Happily, he also planted an Italian variety
called Nebbiolo, the red grape that makes Italy’s famous Barolo
– it has since become Ridgepoint’s rare signature wine. Several
white varieties and new blends round out the selection. A trip
to the winery, and perhaps a light, casual Italian lunch at their
on-site dining room and seasonal patio, is the best way to
experience the wines.

RIDGE ROAD ESTATE WINERY
Founded in 2009 on a farm that has been in the family for
over 100 years, Ridge Road Estate Winery is situated on the
edge of the Niagara Escarpment in Stoney Creek. It is one of
the first wineries encountered when entering the Niagara wine
country from the west. Award-winning winemaker Sean
Douglas and interior designer Jayne Douglas established the
vineyard in 1994. After many years of supplying grapes and
juice to wineries and amateur winemakers they introduced
their first vintage of wines and opened the doors of their
casually elegant tasting room. The winery offers a range of
red, white, rosé and sparkling wines including a unique blend
that features the Traminette grape. In the summer of 2011,
they will be opening a walking trail that will allow visitors to
take in the natural beauty of the property and the views from
the Escarpment. The winery also produces a gourmet culinary
product called Verjus that is made from unfermented
vinifera grapes.

Rosewood opened in 2008, and recognition has been rapid
thanks to the winemaking talents of Natalie Spytkowsky, an
oenologist who has created award-winning Pinot Noir, eclectic
100% Semillon, Cuvée Award-winning Gewürztraminer and
charming, off-dry Riesling Süssreserve. The underlying buzz
is the mead and honey-based wines. Owner Eugene Roman
is an apiarist (beekeeper) and, with Spytkowsky, has
cross-pollinated the meads with interesting grape blends:
very good Mon Cherie, Grande Reserve Ambrosia and Mead
Royale. The modern winery and tasting room are set on the
Beamsville Bench, a great place to picnic and unwind, while the
adjoining gift shop waxes poetic with all things wine and honey.

Burgundy super-fan Moray Tawse is smitten with Chardonnay
and Pinot Noir. In 2005, he opened a handsome six-tier
gravity-flow winery, with three barrel caves carved into the
Escarpment. Adding neighbouring vineyards expanded his
range to Riesling, Cabernet Franc and Merlot; under the
guidance of Burgundy consulting oenologist Pascal Marchand
and Niagara-trained winemaker Paul Pender, these vineyards
are being converted to organic and biodynamic production.
The Tawse label – along with the winery’s Sketches line – is
one of the most sought-after brands in Ontario, with a bushel
of awards affirming its success. The crowning achievement
came last year when Tawse was named Winery of the Year
at the Canadian Wine Awards.

BETWEEN THE LINES
CAROLINE CELLARS
The Lakeit family – with a half-century of farming history
behind them – opened Caroline Cellars with the 2000 vintage,
and their winery tasting room in the Four Mile Creek
appellation two years later. Rick Lakeit Sr. makes a portfolio of
great-value white and red varietal wines, award-winning fruit
wines and critically acclaimed and awarded Icewine. A new,
easy-drinking Momentum line of white and red blends has
been added recently. The charming winery has been designed
to accommodate large events and weddings, both indoors
and outdoors. Enjoy the wines with a cheese plate on the

CATTAIL CREEK ESTATE WINERY
The Dyck family only began making wine in 2006, but with
over 90 hectares of mature vineyard in the Four Mile Creek
appellation, these growers can pick and bottle their best.
Recent releases by winemaker Colin Ferguson show a bright,
clean style in a wide range of award-winning whites, red and
dessert wines. He is becoming known for small batch,
experimental wines with a bit of specialty in Riesling and other
aromatic whites. Reds are focused on Gamay Noir, Pinot Noir
and the Bordeaux varieties from vines on the property. A visit
to the winery is the best way to taste their portfolio of wines.

Named for its location between the 5th and 6th lines, Between
the Lines is a small winery opened by brothers Yannick and
Gregory Wertsch to take advantage of large vineyard acreage
planted by their parents when the family moved from the
Wurttemberg region of Germany in 1998. Since completing
studies in Germany and Canada, the brothers have returned
home and released a line of well-priced varietals including
Vidal and Riesling whites, a pretty Rosé, Pinot Noir plus Merlot
and Cabernet Franc. A more expensive range from the 2010
vintage will be released. The brothers offer personalized tours

COLANERI ESTATE WINERY
Colaneri is a new family-owned and operated winery that
hand-harvests the finest grapes to produce premium VQA
award-winning wines from its surrounding vineyards. Most of
the wines are made with the traditional Italian appassimento
style of drying grapes, including a large portfolio of red, white
and dessert wines. A new series has been introduced, made
in the “recioto” style of making dessert wines. The winery is
built in the Romanesque style featuring a captivating panoramic
view of the vineyard and escarpment atop the St. David’s Bench

FROGPOND FARM ORGANIC WINERY
No winery offers a better window into the world of organic
winemaking than Frogpond Farm; with a belief that natural
balances build stronger vines that can survive without chemical
pesticides and herbicides, it’s Ontario’s first winery to produce
certified-organic wine and the only one that produces organic
wine exclusively. The winery also gets its electricity from a
renewable energy source. Jens Gemmrich and Heike Koch
opened the winery in 2001, focusing on a small range of solid,

THE ICE HOUSE
JOSEPH’S ESTATE WINES
While Niagara-born Dr. Joseph Pohorly opened his own
premium winery in 1996, his history in the industry goes back
much further – he founded Newark Wines (which later
became Hillebrand) in 1978. Today, with 10 hectares of prime
orchard converted to vineyard, Joseph’s Estate Wines is
racking up medals for Icewines and the tradition continues
as Joseph creates a unique showcase of fruit-forward
palate-pleasing wines. And their port and sherry-styled wines
are among the last remaining in Ontario. In addition, Pohorly
has been researching and marketing the health benefits of
grape-seed oil, a powerful antioxidant, as well as gluten-free
grape skin flour. Winery tours are a great way to hear about
Niagara history, geography and winemaking.

KONZELMANN ESTATE WINERY
The arrival in 1984 of veteran German winemaker Herbert
Konzelmann, one of the wine industry pioneers, gave the
Niagara industry a boost of confidence and experience.
Situated on a former peach orchard on the lakeside, planted
with varietals like Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay,
the vineyard produced its greatest fruit years later. Along with
winemaker Eric Pearson, Konzelmann has garnered prestigious
national and international awards, including Canada’s only
placement on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list (2008).
Icewines are a tour de force. Fruit-forward Pinot Blanc is a

This 12-hectare vineyard, planted along the Niagara Parkway,
has had one purpose since 2005: to create the best and most
innovative Icewine for the world. Founder and winemaker
Jamie Macfarlane is right on track with the international
success of Northern Ice: a trio of “toasting style” Icewines –
Cabernet Sauvignon, Vidal and Vintner’s Reserve – each a
Grand Gold winner at Europe’s Monde Selection competition.
The winery, a refurbished 18th-century peach barn, welcomes
visitors for year-round tours, tastings and Jamie’s newest
Icewine innovations, including Icewine Slushies and Icewine
Spirit. Group tours and corporate functions for up to 30 visitors
are welcome, complete with seminars with Jamie, the world’s
most experienced Icewine maker.
LAILEY VINEYARD
Alongside the Niagara River and tucked off the Niagara Parkway,
the well-kept, herbicide-free, nine-hectare Lailey Vineyard
has long been known for producing some of Niagara’s
sturdiest, deepest and most highly awarded reds. Veteran
winemaker Derek Barnett excels with Pinot Noir, Syrah,
Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling, made in a compact,
complex style for enjoying at the table, and often benefiting
from bottle aging. He is also a pioneer in using Canadian oak
barrels. The small winery is an ideal stop for intimate tastings

A grape grower since 1952, John Marynissen not only founded
one of Ontario’s first small family wineries in 1990, he was also
the first to plant Cabernet Sauvignon, a later-ripening red grape
assumed to be incompatible with Niagara’s climate. His daughter
Sandra has inherited his legacy of big Cabernet-based reds
that remain at the heart of today’s portfolio. In the warm, dry
2007 vintage, several reds took Intervin awards, including
more recently planted Syrah and Malbec; an All-Canada Gold
for the 2007 unoaked Chardonnay proved that the portfolio
is indeed well rounded. A visit to the winery and tasting room
has very much a family feel.

ONTARIO ICEWINE
INTENSELY FLAVOURED AND INCREDIBLY
SMOOTH, ONTARIO ICEWINE IS WORLD
RENOWNED AND SOUGHT AFTER.
An Ontario treasure, Icewine is a
luscious, intensely, flavoured
wine made from grapes that
have been left to freeze naturally
on the vine. With almost ideal
climate conditions for the
reliable annual production of
Icewine – warm summers to
ripen the grapes and cold but
not too cold winters – Ontario is recognized as producing
some of the world’s finest Icewine.
Icewine is sweet with a firm backbone of acidity
making them perfectly balanced. Experience rich
aromas and flavours of ripe tropical fruits such as
lychee, papaya and pineapple. Icewine is enjoyed as a
dessert all on its own but is very versatile and suitable
as an aperitif, paired with cheeses, spicy foods or after
dinner or paired with dessert. Plan your visit to Wine
Country Ontario in December and January for the
Icewine harvest and festivals.

SUNNYBROOK FARM ESTATE WINERY
Born and raised in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Gerald Goertz has
carried on with tender-fruit farming – peaches, cherries, plums,
pears and apples – despite the steady influx of vineyards. After
a deep freeze wiped out the fruit on his 17-hectare Niagara
Lakeshore farm, he and his wife Vivien opened a winery. Since
1993, they have delighted thousands of tasting-room visitors
with humorous anecdotes and a large range of fruit and berry
wines – unfortified, unoaked and 100% from the fruit named
on the bottle (with no grape wine added). The collection
includes Chocolate Embrace, iced fruit wines and Ironwood
Hard Cider, all available exclusively at the winery and online.

CASA-DEA ESTATES WINERY
This picturesque property was the first winery on Greer Road
(near Hillier), now one of the County’s main wine streets.
The 63-acre vineyard was planted through the early part
of the last decade to grow Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Riesling,
Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. Winemaker Paul Battilana
took the helm, finishing the 2008s and making the 2009s,
which included the addition of sparkling wine to the lineup.
The Cucina Italiana is open for casual lunches and dinners
during the summer, doubling as a wedding and event space.

CLOSSON CHASE
Viticulturalist and winemaker Deborah Paskus was among the
first to plant in the County’s tough limestone soils, founding
Closson Chase in a big purple barn in 2000. But it would
take almost a decade to boost her organically farmed acreage
to 13 hectares and open a small, modern winery nearby,
supplementing production with labels from prime Niagara
sites. Paskus is a Chardonnay specialist, making bold, layered,
rich Chardonnays; long-aged in barrels, they aim at Burgundy’s
top whites. Low-yield, and equally complex, Pinot Noir is
the red partner, with small amounts of rosé and unoaked
(sans chêne) Chardonnay. The barn is now the tasting room,
with local-art space adjoining an engaging organic garden.

The County’s largest vineyard and winery is also one of the
most popular for visitors and photographers: In an idyllic
pastoral setting, a grand Loyalist barn houses the tasting room
and barrel cellar. Robert Granger and daughter Caroline began
planting grapes in 2001, increasing production to 20 hectares
by 2009. Taut, mineral-driven Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gamay,
Cab Franc and Pinot Gris anchor the Trumpour’s Mill line, with
the first, layered Grange of Prince Edward premium wines
released in 2007. The first – and exciting – sparkling Brut and
Brut Rosé have followed. Light meals, art shows and picnics

Former Toronto sommelier and globe-trotting Pinot Noir
winemaker Norman Hardie landed in the County in 2004,
opening a small, innovative winery with a barrel cellar that is
embedded underground in the limestone bedrock. His
ten-hectare vineyard is all about low-yield Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay, along with some surprisingly good aromatic
varietals. Hardie is a hyper-attentive yet naturalist
winemaker, striving for taut, complex, mineral-driven wines.
His wines have garnered much international acclaim and
now can be found in fine restaurants and wine boutiques in
Tokyo, Hong Kong, Alberta, Quebec and shortly in New York.

ROSEHALL RUN
Rosehall Run 2007 Pinot Noir Rosehall Vineyard became the
first-ever Prince Edward County wine to take a Canadian Wine
Awards Gold Medal for Pinot Noir, the County’s signature
grape. It’s been a rapid ascent for Dan Sullivan, who began
planting the 10-hectare site in 2001: Increasing production
required a new winery facility and a large barrel cellar was
added in 2008. A newly renovated tasting room is planned for
2011. Elegant, approachable Pinot Noir and Chardonnay remain
the prime focus. Cabernet Franc has also been a success, along

Sandbanks Estate Winery
SANDBANKS ESTATE WINERY
Named for the County’s landmark sand dunes, Sandbanks
Estate Winery is located on the historic Loyalist Parkway.
This 2.5-hectare vineyard and winery overlooks the
picturesque shores of Lake Ontario. In 2000, owner and
winemaker Catherine Langlois planted Riesling, Cabernet
Franc and the French hybrids Maréchal Foch and Vidal.
The largest planting is her now-signature Baco Noir. While
her award-winning Riesling and Cabernet Franc show charm
and class, it’s her Baco and Foch Reserve that have earned
a loyal following. Sandbanks celebrates its 10th anniversary
with a new wine boutique, contemporary art gallery and

RIESLINGS ARE AN EASY DRINKING WINE THAT
ARE EXCELLENT TO SERVE WITH SPICIER FOOD
SUCH AS MEXICAN, THAI OR INDIAN.
The rise of Rieslings
throughout Ontario
both as a preferred
varietal for vineyards
and a favourite choice
for wine enthusiasts
comes as no surprise.
Beyond their refreshing
and delicious character,
Rieslings have become
one of the fastest growing wine varietals in Canada
thanks in large part to our climate’s prime growing
conditions. This is a perfect example of a cool
climate grape and the conditions here are similar to
those in Germany where it thrives as well.
Of course, Riesling earns a favourable following
because it is such an outwardly food-friendly wine and
can be matched with a great variety of dishes. It shows
particularly well with spicy Thai fare, offering balance
to the complexity of flavours while complementing
that distinctive chili heat. The acidity of Riesling can
manage heavier sauces while its subtle sweetness and
range of character imparted by the particular region its
grown gives it both an easy approachability and
distinction. Sample an assortment of dry and off-dry
and you’ll realize what range Riesling truly has.
WAUPOOS ESTATES WINERY
Ed Neuser and Rita Kaimins are the pioneers of the Prince
Edward County wine industry, planting a vineyard in the 1990s
on orchard land beside Lake Ontario. They then opened the
County’s first winery in 2001. Later came a gazebo-styled
restaurant, popular for summer dining, weddings and special
events. The whites, reds and sweet wines are based on hybrids
and vinifera. Baco Noir consistently wins awards, and the
fragrant white Geisenheim is always popular. Vidal Icewine
and Maple Ice provide a sweet ending.

Off the beaten path – and halfway to the sky, it seems – sits a
small, tasteful winery boasting a great view over its vineyard

Fraser decided to plant vines on his getaway property, against
all opinion that winters would be too cold. He started with

In 2001, Willow Springs located on the Oak Ridges Moraine in
Stouffville, northeast of Toronto. This location surprised many
at the time, but has since become a popular destination.
Hybrid grape varieties like Baco Noir, Maréchal Foch and
Seyval Blanc flourish in the four-hectare vineyard; they are
augmented by vinifera varieties purchased in Niagara, creating
a full range of whites and reds. The 2007 reds are notable
successes, while Moraine Red and White showcase the local

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs
I’m going to the United States. What are the rules
for bringing wine across the border?
When travelling from Canada to the U.S. you are allowed one
litre of wine per person over the age of 21. Any additional wine
is subject to an IRS tax of 21 cents per additional litre regardless
of the wine’s price.
I’ve never been to a winery. What should I expect?
First and foremost, you should expect an open, friendly and
hospitable environment. Many people are intimidated by
visiting wineries but here in Ontario, staff realize they’re
ambassadors not just for their label, but for the entire region.
They’ll assist you and answer any questions you might have,
because they really enjoy talking about wine. As for the
wineries, they vary in size and each one is pleasantly unique.
Most wineries are comprised of a retail area where bottles are
on display and related items such as corkscrews and stemware
can be purchased, and a tasting bar where you can typically
sample some wines for a small fee.
What’s the best way of staying current with Wine
Country once I leave?
Many wineries maintain strong connections with their patrons
through Wine or Barrel Clubs Memberships, which are designed
to keep you up-to-date on all the events, developments and
new releases at the vineyard. They will also conveniently ship
wine directly to your door on a monthly basis. Another
alternative is to join the Ontario Wine Society, an organization
dedicated to keeping people abreast of all the activity in Wine
Country Ontario. They host tastings and other events to help
promote the industry and keep enthusiasts up to speed on all
relevant activities across the province.
I’m eager to go on a wine tour. How should I
approach this?
Most wineries offer tours of their vineyard and winery, typically
for a small fee. Visitors will learn about the history of the
winery, see how the wine is produced and taste some of the
wines. To start, consult the winery listings for more details on
winery tours, but it’s also best to call in advance to book a tour,
find out what times they offer these sessions and the types of
tours that they host.
I’m interested in having wine shipped directly to my
home – what’s the policy around this?
While many wineries offer the direct shipment of wine to your
door in Ontario for a small fee, shipping standards can vary
from winery to winery. It’s best to ask a retail associate what
the specific standards of the winery are before placing an order.
If travelling with wine, what’s the best way to keep it?
Above all, make sure the wine is not left in direct sunlight. It
should be secured to prevent excessive movement.
Once a bottle is opened, how long will the wine last?
On average, opened wine will be fine for up to three days. It’s
important to properly seal your wine and, if it’s white, keep it in
the refrigerator, while if red, store it at room temperature.
Is there a recommended way to age Ontario wines?
There are a number of determining factors when it comes to
aging wine, such as the vintage and the varietal. If you’re at a
winery, put the question to one of their staff. Otherwise,
the following are a few guidelines to follow with respect to
aging wines:
• For fresh unoaked white wines and rosé wines –
up to one year
• Oaked white wines – one to two years
• Ontario red wines – between two and five years
• Ontario Icewine and fortified wine – between five
and ten years
62
Wine Country Ontario / 2011 Travel Guide
What’s the best way to store wine?
All varieties of wine (including Icewine) should be stored
horizontally in a cool, dark and dry place.
At what temperature should wines be served?
As a guideline, the preferred serving temperature for wines
should be as follows:
• 8-10°C – Late harvest/Sparkling/Icewine
• 10-12°C – Riesling/Pinot Grigio/Rosé/Unoaked
Chardonnay/Seyval Blanc/Sauvignon Blanc/Vidal/
Off Dry Gewürztraminer
• 13-15°C – Pinot Gris/Oaked Chardonnay/
Gewürztraminer/Viognier
• 14-16°C – full-bodied Oaked Chardonnay/Gamay Noir/
lighter Pinot Noir
• 16-18°C – full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet
Franc/Merlot/Baco Noir/Syrah/Shiraz/Pinot Noir
Where else can wine be purchased in Ontario?
The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) and its in-store
VINTAGES locations are the most common place to purchase
wine in Ontario. However, many wineries offer wines that are
available only at the winery. Wineries will typically ship wine
directly within Ontario as well. Another option is to try a wine
of the month club. One suggestion is www.winerytohome.com
where you can shop online for Ontario wines and have them
shipped directly to your home.
Does Ontario specialize in any wines?
Ontario continues to produce a stunning array of wines, but
given that the temperatures here lend themselves to cooler
climate varieties, our Rieslings and Chardonnays for white and
Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc in the red are typically excellent
options. Other popular varietals that grow well, like Merlot and
Cabernet Sauvignon, can be found in enticing blended wines.
What does the sugar code represent on a bottle of wine?
This is a classification system that’s commonly used by the
Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) to help consumers
determine the degree of sweetness in a wine. The scale starts
at “0” for a dry wine and runs up to approximately “25” for
Icewines. Another classification system to determine the
sweetness of wine is based on the taste perception.
It is as follows:
• Extra Dry (XD)
• Dry (D)
• Semi-Dry or Off-Dry
• Medium Dry (MD)
• Medium (M)
• Medium Sweet (MS)
• Sweet (S)
Just how do you pronounce Gewürztraminer?
Say, “Gah-VURTS-trah-meener”
What’s the point of ‘swirling’ a glass of wine?
Swirling helps to reveal more of the wine’s bouquet. This
opening of the “aromatic esters” presents a more intense
aroma in the wine.
Fun fact: How many grapes does it take to make a
bottle of wine?
Consider this a rough yet approximate calculation. Given 1,200
vines per acre, each vine with 20 shoots and each shoot with a
cluster of grapes, that would equal 24,000 clusters of grapes
per acre. If a typical harvest yields five tonnes per acre and a
tonne of grapes produces 700 litres of juice, there would be
3,500 litres of juice per acre. If there are nine litres of wine in a
case (12 x 750mL bottles), that would equal 388 cases of wine
per acre, or 4,656 bottles per acre. Therefore, if there are
24,000 clusters per acre and 4,656 bottles produced per acre,
then it would take approximately five clusters of grapes to
make one bottle of wine! Cheers!
