Welcome to IN–Chicago’s 2014 Annual Ball
A Chairde,
Ireland Network Chicago welcomes you to
the Annual Ball! Thank you for your continued
support throughout the year and for making
Ireland Network successfully plan events that
are relevant and of interest to you! It is only
through your participation in such events as this evening,
that the IN-Chicago Committee can achieve the business
development that we believe benefits you, our members.
This level of commitment is key to IN-Chicago’s ability to
fulfill its mission of supporting our membership’s business
development and providing a bridge for newly arrived Irish
to the Chicago business and Chicago Irish communities.
IN-Chicago does this by hosting a full calendar of diverse
and engaging events, both business and social, of which
this annual gathering is the core.
Since the 10th Annual Ball last year here at The
Drake, IN-Chicago has hosted or partnered in 30
gatherings. The IN-Conversation series has successfully
addressed topics of interest to the membership. This
includes the recent event on the economic status of
Chicago with panelists Theresa Mintle, Chairperson and
CEO of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, and Eileen
Mitchell, VP of External Affairs and Governmental Relations
with AT&T Mobility, with ABC 7 Journalist Janet Davies
as moderator. The First Friday monthly program continues
to provide a natural forum for connections across the
membership and beyond. Our annual program features
several exciting events, including our Bloomsday Picnic at
Montrose Harbor in June, the Rooftop Movie Screening
in July, and the Members’ Business Expo in October, in
addition to the ever-popular Fall Table Quiz in November.
We look forward to hosting many of you at these event
programs over the coming months.
We are also delighted to report that IN-USA, our
network partnership across the country, continues
to grow, with 16 chapters throughout the USA in
what is now a truly national framework of Irish Networks.
Over the years, this annual event in February has provided
us with the opportunity to give back as a membership
by raising funds for our charities of choice. This year we
are delighted to support both global and local causes
that are close to our hearts—Concern Worldwide, an
organization that delivers help where it is most needed
around the globe, and Chicago Irish Immigrant
Support, which provides essential services to local Irish
immigrants in need.
We are delighted to have four prizes
donated this year for our raffle.
One hundred percent of the proceeds from
the raffle will go directly to these two worthy
causes, and four lucky winners will
be announced after dinner this evening.
On behalf of Concern Worldwide
and CIIS, many thanks for your
support, and best of luck!
Lastly, I want to extend sincere gratitude to our
Sponsor Partners, without whose generous support
over the years we could not host events of this
nature. Please take a moment to review the diverse roster
of sponsors in this brochure, and support them with your
business whenever the opportunity arises. We also extend
special thanks to the Consulate General of Ireland for
its continued strong advocacy for our mission. Finally, many
thanks to our hardworking IN Committee members and
other key volunteers who spend countless hours all year
long building the success and vibrancy of IN-Chicago.
We look forward to many more years of IN-Chicago events!
Enjoy the evening, then please join us at another INChicago event very soon. Go raibh míle maith agaibh!

A Message from the Consul General
Aidan Cronin
Ireland’s Consul General in Chicago
My wife, Maedhbh, and I are delighted to
be here with you all tonight at what is our
third Ireland Network Ball since arriving
in Chicago in August 2011. Thank you to the
Ball Committee for your kind invitation to join
in your celebrations once again this year.
The Ireland Network Ball is always a wonderful
occasion, one of the highlights of the Irish
social calendar in Chicago, and I know that will be the case
again this evening.
This event, to my mind, marks the end of the postChristmas hibernation period and, with the batteries
recharged, we are looking ahead and looking forward to a busy
and productive year.
We are already preparing for the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations
which, every year, afford us an unrivaled opportunity to
promote all that is good and positive about Ireland and what it
means to be Irish.
Chicago is, of course, home to a strong and deeplyrooted Irish community. The Ireland Network has, over the
years, grown in stature and has itself developed deep roots in
this great city, to the point that it now lies at the heart of the
Chicago Irish community.
Credit for that must go to the hard work of successive
presidents, committees and the entire membership in
establishing and developing the organization as a business and
social network for Irish people living and working in Chicago,
and also as a forum for discussions on a wide range of topics
through the excellent IN-Conversation series.
One of the most striking aspects of the Network is
how connected to and supportive of Ireland and its
interests you all remain. I am, as Ireland’s Consul General
here in Chicago, extremely grateful for that
connection and that support.
Ireland Networks are now being established
across the USA, sixteen at last count, with
four of them located in the area for which the
Consulate has responsibility: IN-Chicago,
IN-Cleveland, IN-Austin and INMinnesota. They are a fantastic resource
and I am confident that the number of networks here in the
Midwest and across the USA will continue to grow.
Ireland, as you know, has had to address some
significant economic challenges in recent years. It has
been a difficult time, but the Irish economy is now firmly on
the road to recovery. Last December, Ireland exited the EU/
IMF Programme, an important milestone in our recovery. The
economy is headed in the right direction, the public finances are
under control, the banking system has been restructured and
recapitalized and, most importantly, jobs are being created again.
It has been a long and difficult road. But the
commitment and determination of the Irish people to
do what is necessary to get the country back on track
has been a critical factor. The Irish diaspora, too, through
organizations like Ireland Network Chicago, has played its part,
supporting initiatives like The Gathering, one of the success
stories of 2013.
On behalf of the entire Consulate team, we look
forward to continuing to work closely with Ireland
Network Chicago, under the leadership of its President,
Imelda Gallagher, in 2014 and in the years ahead.
Le gach dea ghuí,
Aidan Cronin

Ireland Network Chicago fulfills its mission by hosting
