Region J had a booth at the bike show near Toronto last weekend. This is a really big show. Over 1000 bikes on display, over 100 clubs and associations and charity rides, more than 45,000 people attending, hundreds of vendors. We went bigger this year for our booth, a 50’ X 20’, which included three 10’ X 10’ Honda canopies with a theater system set up with a large screen and P.A. system where we had Co Rider and Group Ride seminars. A new Gold Wing from Honda to lay down on it’s side to demo how to pick it up. This demo was continuous all day for three days. We took turns among several members since this demo was about 100 times a day! We also used the Gold Wing for the Co Rider instruction. These seminars were free to show attendees. We had the times posted on signage and announced on the building P.A. system. We also had an information center (room) under one canopy with table and chairs, Chapter contact information sheets and other handouts. Our members brought in two trikes and two bikes for display at the ends of the long booth space. About 40 GWTA volunteers from six Chapters worked the booth on schedule set up by one of our show coordinators. We also had signs up on all the stanchions and canopy posts. Have a look at the pictures below. The fallen bike and other assets of the display attracted a lot of attention, we had other clubs coming over to see what we were doing that was attracting the show attendees. Be sure to stay in your seats for the main event, coming soon! Family FAMILY. Everyone has one. Some are proud of theirs. Some are not. But we all have one. They know what we are made of. Where we came from. Where we have been. They know our core. They are a part of us. Our personalized history. They have seen us at our lowest point and maybe even some of our highs. They know our core our heart. This week I walked into my friends’ hospital room. He was hooked up to a respirator and was in a forced comma. I don’t know if he knew I was there. I would like to think he did. I talked to him about some better times. Memories of good and even not so good times we had together. We have history. We are Family. I know his core. I know what he’s made of. I watched as his blood family struggled to make some tough decisions for him. About him. They know where he’s been and what he’s made of. They were put in a position to decide where he’s going. It was not fun. But they know him. They know his core. It’s hard to say good bye to family. It is like saying good bye to a part of yourself. They are always there when you need them and even sometimes when you don’t. A part of us leaves when they do. Kept only vivid in our memories brought to life through stories we share. When he left it hurt my core. We have history. He is my family. By Linda Keenon In memory of Marvin Freeman 8 January/February 2016 Where to Ride by Chrysa Keenon As winter is coming to a close and the sun is peeking through the clouds to warm up the ground, riding season is just around the corner. While you may have pushed planning your first ride off, forgo getting out the maps this year and try using someone else’s electronic trails instead. Motorcycling does not die in the winter--rather, people spend time trying to plan their itinerary for the summer ahead. Using the internet to help is admittedly scary, yes, but it helps locate routes that other bikers have rode and recommended. Here are five sources that are easy to use and helpful for itinerary planning. • www.motorcycleroads.com - Motercycle Roads shows an interactive map of the U.S. states, allowing for you to click on the specific one you wish to travel in. Travel routes and events are listed for the state, as well as a rating other riders have given each route. Reviews of scenery, road quality, and amenities are given, along with directions of how to get to the particular route. • www.bestbikingroads.com - Best Biking Roads (or BBR) offers a varity of different trails in many countries. This website is particularly useful for anyone wanting to ride in Canada or Mexico. Individual riding trails can be selected, or a whole routes of other riders can be viewed. A BBR app is offered for free download (and for those who don’t know what that means, routes can be viewed on your phone). Once you complete a ride, you can record the trail to the website so others can find the route. • www.motowhere.com - MotoWhere is website that monitors Google Maps and shows where motercyclist groups have recently traveled. The website gets updated hourly, keeping all information on the site current. Routes for official Harley Davidson promoters are recorded here. Though it does not list routes state by state, the website is international, posting about riders as far as Australia and Japan. • www.sundaymorningrides.com - Sunday Morning Rides showcases the routes listed by state and country. Most routes have a gallery of pictures available, allowing for a good preview for the ride to come. The site offers “3D fly-throughs” of the trails, meaning you can take a virtual tour of the road before you go. Off Road rides and Adventure trails are available, too. Simply because the greatest adventures happen with our friends, calling someone on the phone and discussing your next ride together is beneficial. Ask family members, waitresses, or local businesses to see if they know a good riding road. Many people know unexpected things, and it never hurts to start your year of riding off with a friendly conversation with someone new. Remember, destination friendship cannot be reached without a destination! Be sure to start your planning today! 9 By Eric Larson, Michigan State Director Have you ever thought about how blessed you are? Blessed with good health, a roof over your head, food on your table, transportation from here to there, etc. Well in a recent sermon, our pastor described rich people as just that; having a roof over their head, food on their table and transportation from here to there, but he also included a couple of other things such as sharing and love, without any mention of wealth being measured in terms of dollars. I’m guessing that most of you immediately thought that a rich person had simply accumulated a large sum of money. My mind sometimes drifts to ways of sharing that wealth by helping others. The answer can be summed up as simply as “giving” and it doesn’t have to be money that’s given. Sharing time and talents is another way to help others. Such is the case with Michigan Chapter C better known as the Cereal City Wings in Battle Creek, Michigan. Some GWTA members who have been part of our association for a long time may recall Gold Rush was hosted in Battle Creek in 1996 and this chapter took an active role in showing off their city. Well the last couple of winters when those of us in Michigan typically have their motorcycles parked, this chapter volunteers their time; three hours one Saturday morning a month at the Food Bank of South Central Michigan located in Battle Creek. They do a variety of jobs there such as sorting food, re-boxing donations and building after school food packages that get sent home with school kids where the purchasing of food creates a financial hardship for the family. Realizing the importance of giving back, Chapter Director Ken Leche told me once that when he was a kid, his family grew up on USDA Food Ration Boxes. So today I know it’s important for Ken to share his time to help others less fortunate than himself. That sentiment showed through with their Chapter Fun Run in August 2015 when they collected food and cash offerings to be donated to the food bank as the price of admission for their ride. Apparently many Chapter C members feel the same way, as they have had some very successful work days at the food bank. 10 On their work Saturday in January, my wife Chris and I decided to participate with Chapter C for their morning of service at the Food Bank. That morning saw 11 of us participating; Ken and Joanne Leche, Jack and Millie Carlson, Richard and Gerry Thayer, Tony and Evie Miller, Mike Sloan plus Chris and I. The coordinator assigned our group to sorting potatoes. Our task. Open bags of donated potatoes, remove the rotten potatoes putting them in a box that would head become livestock feed and put the good potatoes in another box after washing them off if necessary. The saying for the day was “when in doubt, throw it out”. We headed into the warehouse, adorned a pair of rubber gloves and began our task. It didn’t take long to discover that this was a very nasty job. There were always at least a half dozen potatoes in each bag so spoiled and soft that you literally picked mush out of the bag. They smelled and it was very nasty. You needed to change your rubber gloves frequently. The good news was that about 50 percent of each bag contained salvageable good potatoes, that after being rinsed off if necessary, would provide food for a hungry family. After about two and a half hours of sorting, the coordinator advised us that due to the gross nature of our volunteer work, she wouldn’t blame any of us if we quit early and we all decided we were ready. Together with the other volunteers from other organizations who joined us that day, we were able to sort through about 75 percent of the potatoes that the food bank had placed on the warehouse floor. Afterwards the group gathered at the Ale House restaurant a couple of miles away for lunch and some additional conversation and friendship. Funny thing was no one was interested in any of the appetizers on the menu; potato skins, deluxe skins or loaded fries. And no one ordered a baked potato with their meal either. Some of us did however have fries with a burger. It was a morning of work for a great cause. Great job Chapter C and thank you for your service to those who are less fortunate than ourselves. Year_____________ Model_________________ Serial Number____________________________ I declare my candidacy for the position of Board Director for the Gold Wing Touring Association. Please Mark One, I declare my candidacy for Board of Directors member from Region B__H__ Signed:_________________________________________________________Date:___________ 12 January/February 2016 This past week my employer sent me and my fellow drivers to a defensive driving course and I thought I would share the course with all of you. Even though it was for large trucks the principles are useful in all forms of motor vehicle’s. It is broken down into 5 segments that we will cover in the next several months. Here is the first one. Aim high in steering. Sounds simple enough but just how high should you aim? It comes down to how fast you are going, the faster your speed the farther ahead you should be looking. The average driver only looks 3 to 4 seconds ahead but you should be seeing 15 seconds so there won’t be any surprises for you. What is 15 seconds in speed/ distance look like? At 30 MPH that would be 660 feet and at 50MPH it jumps up to 1100 feet, almost a 1/4 mile. A quick way to figure out the distance you need is to pick a fixed object start counting the seconds off after the car ahead of passes and stop when you reach that point. Now for the second step in the driving course I just took. This part is called get the big picture. Last month we learned to look ahead at least 15 seconds down the road but what you see is important also. Look out for cars or trucks coming from side streets or out a driveway. Is there someone getting ready to cross the road or are they just standing by the edge of the road? We can’t always tell what someone is going to do so we must be prepared for cars or people to do anything. Is that traffic light been green very long? A traffic light that hasn’t changed for a extended period may change before you get to the intersection so you must be ready for that. The main idea is to see anything the may cause a accident or make you take action to avoid an accident. This should also include checking your mirrors and leaving yourself a way out of problems. The lesson here is to see problems before they become an accident. All of the previous lessons can be tied to this one, leaving yourself an out or an escape route. In the previous lessons we learned to look far ahead, take in everything that is happening around you, and to keep scanning your surroundings. While riding in the open country it would appear that a rider wouldn’t need to worry to much about needing a way out but there are still many things that can jump out at you. Say you are out in the country and a car comes up behind you and then makes a pass when a dog runs out in front of you, you had better have a plan for that. Is the car still behind you? Can you gas on it and cut in front of the car to miss the dog? Maybe brake hard then cut in behind the car? You only have a split second to do something so it is best to already have a plan in your mind. In town or just in heavy traffic in is even more important to have a escape plan. Try not to let yourself be boxed in and keep an eye on all of the other vehicles around you. Do they see you? Be ready for any of them to make sudden lane changes that takes your escape route away from you. Something else I would like to say here and it probably wouldn’t TOURING NEWS be used while on your bike but in your car. In slick conditions it seems to me that people get in packs while going down the highway. Maybe one is driving extra slow and as others catch up to them they just slow down and before you know it there is a bunch running together. When in a pack like this all it takes is one car to just get a little sideways and the others panic and then everyone is in the ditch! When I am in my big truck and come up on a pack I will work my way through and get the heck away from them. It is much safer by yourself on slick roads. To wrap it up always know your surroundings and leave yourself a way out. If another driver takes away your escape route reposition yourself to get a new one. This is the last of the 5 articles on safe driving and riding. First lets go over the 4 previous steps, number one was to aim high in steering, next was to get the big picture. Step three is to keep your eyes moving and fourth was to leave yourself an out. To sum up these four is look far ahead, also keep an eye on what is happening around you and have a escape route if you need it. These are all ways to see what others are doing now you need to make sure they see you, the subject of this last article. The greatest safety feature the bike industry has done is to have the lights come on when you start your bike. It is so much easier to see a light coming at you than just a narrow bike. Some riders have installed the light modulator that cause’s the light to go between dim and bright. That dose get other’s attention but if you have ever rode ahead of someone with one of these it can be very distracting. Flashing brake lights also grab others attention when stopping better than just standard brake lights. It is also a good idea when stopping to check your mirror’s just to make sure that everyone behind you are stopping also, if they aren’t then use your escape route to get out of trouble. Wearing bright colors will help in making yourself visible. Either safety green or orange or yellow shirts or jackets really stand out add a bright colored helmet makes it just that much better. Making eye contact with the other driver and making sure they see you is important but I would not count on the hope they did see you. Even if you think you have made eye contact ride as if you didn’t. Use your turn signals every time you turn or change lanes. I often use an hand signal along with the turn signal just to be sure the other drivers see me. Use all of these steps to made others see you but always ride like they don’t know you are there because you never know if the other driver has seen you. The number one reason given in a bike wreck where a car has pulled out in front of a bike or turned in front of one is I didn’t see them. I hope these articles have been a help and I know we all have heard most or all of these tips before but it never hurts to be reminded of them. (Let’s celebrate) Celebrate good times, come on! It’s a celebration! There’ll be a party goin’ on in Chippewa Falls when the members of Region C gather for their annual rally on June 10th and 11th. Wisconsin State Directors, Sherri & Jeryl Vonderheid, and the Region C Staff invite you to join us for a fun-filled weekend complete with mirror ball, DJ, and a party atmosphere…80’s style! All of your Region C friends will be there and your motorcycle or trike, too. What more could you ask for? The Staff met last October to make rally plans and tour the facilities at the Northern Wisconsin State Fairgrounds which will serve as ‘Rally Central.’ Some nice improvements have been made since the last time we were there. Camping will be allowed on-sight for large and small units at very good rates. And, there is no problem if you want to come early that week or stay after the rally…extra nights will be payable to the fairgrounds. The Avalon will serve as the Host Hotel, and several other area hotels come highly recommended. Please see the rally registration form for details, fees and deadlines, and check for the release of additional information and the rally schedule on our website, gwta-c.com. and best individual male and female costume. If you need inspiration for what to wear, just think of how the characters dressed in some of the most popular 80’s movies like ‘Breakfast Club’, ‘Back to the Future’, E.T., ‘Big’, or ‘When Harry Met Sally’. Or, just ‘Google’ 80’s fashion trends! Even if you don’t want to get into the contest, you can still dress up in your best 80’s attire. Let your hair down and have a good time! Let’s celebrate…it’s all right! The night will be capped off with the light show or illumination presentation. The ‘relaxing’ activity mentioned earlier will be offered again on Saturday morning for those who didn’t get to participate on Friday afternoon. We’re having a ‘Psychedelic Progressive Paint Party’ which you will need to sign up for during registration. Details for this activity will be outlined at a later date. All activity sign-up sheets will be available at the registration table along with your Welcome Packets, area riding maps, and rally shirt orders. On-bike games, State’s Braggin’ Rights games, and the benefit auctions will take place on Saturday. Donated items from members, the chapters, and States would be greatly appreciated for the auctions that help with region expenses and our newest Family of the Year. We’ll close out the weekend with the Awards Banquet where the ‘Celebrate GWTA’ slide show will be presented. The Vonderheid’s will be putting this together, and you are encouraged to share pictures of all the ‘good times’ you’ve had at Region C rallies, your chapter, or State events. Please send pictures to [email protected] no later than May 1st for inclusion. Your participation will make the slide show ‘that’ much better! This year, we will offer early registration on Thursday evening plus a couple of other activities. Join us for the Beef Stew Dinner Dump whereby you bring enough stew for yourself (and your family) to dump into the warming pot and share. All the different recipes combine to make a tasty concoction. We’ll provide the paper products and you bring your drinks. In case you forget a beverage… Wisconsin State will be selling water and soft drinks throughout the weekend. There will be lots of time for socializing, and you’ll want to bring lawn chairs or a blanket to sit ‘under the starts’ for popcorn and a movie beginning at dusk. A memorial service was held at last year’s rally for members who passed away in the last five years. We wish to continue this new tradition and will invite chapters to remember those who have passed since the 2015 Region Rally. Before Opening Ceremonies on Friday, we will again offer the Smith’s famous omelet breakfast for a small donation. The 2016 Region C ‘Family of the Year’ will be chosen and announced that morning. Most of the day, you’ll have ample time to ride the beautiful countryside on your own or join the escorted ride. As a suggestion, check out the park across the road from the fair grounds where you’ll find a small animal zoo, white buffalo, elk, and the beautiful Glen Loch Falls. If you haven’t been in some time and this article has you thinking about coming, OR if you’re going to be attending Region C Rally for the very first time, let me tell you...THIS is going to be a…‘celebration to last throughout the years, so bring your good times and your laughter, too’… More organized activities will take place back at the fairgrounds late Friday afternoon including a new, fun and relaxing activity some will really enjoy. Friday evening we’ll be rockin’ the place with the ‘Celebration’ dance, ice cream social, and 80’s costume contest. Categories for costumes will include best group costumes, TOURING NEWS Also in 2015, we recognized our past Region C Families of the Year at Opening Ceremonies. This year, we will be honoring all the Past Region C Directors and hope many of them will attend. We haven’t seen some of you in a while. You know who you are, and you may be feeling empty or sad because you’ve missed a lot of TA fun lately. Come home…we really, really miss you! We’re gonna celebrate Region C with you! It’s time to come together It’s up to you, what’s your pleasure… Everyone around T-A, Come on! Admit it…you’re singing right now…aren’t you? Kool & The Gang - Celebration Lyrics | MetroLyrics 15 Paws and Stripes 101 Helping dogs, helping heroes. Those four words are the essence of Paws and Stripes. The nonprofit organization provides service dogs for wounded military veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), which helps veterans live the full and rich lives they deserve. It is Paws and Stripes mission to provide integrative service dog training and mental health support to U.S. military veterans with PTSD and TBI while inspiring hope by matching shelter dogs with our nation's heroes in order to work together to overcome the daily struggles associated with their diagnosis. Paws and Stripes was founded in 2010 by Jim and Lindsey Stanek after Jim was medically discharged from the U.S. Army. As an infantryman in the 82nd Airborne Division, Jim was injured during his third deployment to Iraq. As of 2014, Paws and Stripes has rescued more than 70 shelter dogs, provided therapeutic assistance to more than 85 veterans and their families, and established a waitlist of more than 250 families. As an independent, registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, Paws and Stripes relies on the support of the community to continue its mission and provide services to U.S. Military veterans free of charge. Every year we make something different. This year, Barbara McCart saw on the internet to spray paint wine glasses and decorate them in a Christmas theme. With the idea, wine glasses and glitter; the ‘Elf’s’ gathered to create Christmas joy. The hot glue guns, scissors, glitter, ribbon and bells lay on the table awaiting to be assembled. Due to the drying time, we had to spray paint all of the wine glasses several weeks before our gathering. Oh, I forgot to say we also have snacks, so we had to eat first, visit and then the serious talk started as the work began. I must say that the men some how disappeared to the basement to watch a college football game. One, two then three were done. We kept going until all 16 wine glasses were finished. The plan was for each couple to decorate a wine glass and they get to take it home after our annual December monthly meeting/Christmas Party. Gail & Jorja Hensley Chapter A KS My choir director at church has sung there a couple of other times and as she was involved with a group through U of M, she was invited to come and bring some from her choir. She chose me and two other gals from the choir. We will be sharing a room in Manhattan. We will have intensive rehearsal on June 11 & 12 (4 hrs. each day) and our concert is scheduled for June 13. We will receive a big reception after the concert. The cost of our trip includes tickets to a Broadway show and subway tickets as well. OMG! What an experience! I will be leaving June 10 to go to NY city and will be just getting home from Houston, Texas on June 7 where my grandson is graduating high school. Busy times!
