Page 8 of 35 Manual Ram mpmaster Operating O Glass ver. RM3 - Mar. 2011 2 rev. 1 C Custom Mode Pr rogramming T The Custom Mode is a method of pro ogramming that allows the artist to precisely define eevery aspect of thee firing. You’re creeating a custom firring program d designed for the w work at hand. program is not diffficult. It does, how C Creating a custom wever, require som me knowledge and d forethought abo out what you wantt to do and how to o go about it. W We have included a “Basic Glass Firin ng Guide” with your new kiln that go oes through the basics. But these arre just the basics aand you will want to seek out m more detailed info rmation. Having said that, you do neeed to know how to translate what you want into a fiiring program and we’re going to sh how you how to o do it. F First Things First: S Segments ‐ Whatt are They? M Most glass firing pr rograms require th he kiln to go to mu ultiple temperaturres and to use mulltiple heating rates throughout the ffiring. In order for the R Rampmaster to pe rform all these changes, it breaks th he entire program down into smaller chunks called “Segments”. Your program will consisst of many segments, chained together, one after another, to create the finished program. During firring, the Rampmasster works from on ne segment to thee next until a all segments have been completed. A A Segment consists s of these 3 questiions: How fast am I supposed to gett to temperature? What temperaturre am I going to? A And, once I’m there, should I stay there for any aamount of time? O Once you understaand this concept that a segment includes a rate of tem mperature changee, a particular temp perature you w want to reach and a hold at the temp perature, you’ve ggot it. Now we can n show you how to o program! P Programming B Beginning the Cust tom Mode program mming process is eeasy: with the disp play reading STbY (Standby) simply press the Develop p key one time. P PROG is displayed. The Rampmasterr is asking which off the 12 available locations you wou uld like to store yo our program. In oth her words: a progrram number. Y You’re choices are 1 thru 12. Use the e numerical keys to choose and presss the Enter key. S SEGS is displayed a along with some number. The Ramp pmaster wants to kknow the total num mber of segmentss you would like to o use for the progrram. You can u use up to 32 segme ents for your proggram. Your choicess are 1 thru 32. Use the numerical keeys to choose and press the Enter keey. Most glass firin ng programs u usually use less tha an 8 segments for a firing program. R RA 1 is displayed. R RA stands for Rate e and the 1 means you’re programm ming the rate of tem mperature changee for segment 1. Raate means speed aand you n need to tell the Ra mpmaster how fast you want the teemperature to chaange. Rate for the Rampmaster is prrogrammed in deggrees per hour (°/h hr.). The choice is yours. Usee the numerical ke eys to put in your rate and press thee Enter key. d if you’re using Ceelsius) and the 1 m means you’re progrramming the temp perature you °F 1 is displayed. °FF stands for the temperature set poiint (°C is displayed w would like to reach h in segment 1. The choice is yours. Use the numerical keys to put in your temperature an nd press the Enterr key. H Hd 1 is displayed. H Hd stands for Hold d (a.k.a. soak or dw well) and the 1 meeans you’re programming the amoun nt of time you wan nt the temperaturre to stay at the segment 1 tem mperature once you reach it. Hold tim me is programmed d in hours and min nutes. You do not have to hold at temperature if you d don’t want to o, in which case hold time would be e 0. Use the numerrical keys to put in n your hold time and press the Enterr key. R RA 2 is displayed. T The Rampmaster is now asking for the rate of temperrature increase or decrease in segmeent 2. Please feeel free to contact Evenheat ffor assistance whe en dealing with theese and other poteential kiln problem ms. N No Display C Check to see that t the kiln is actually plugged in. It happens! Also check tthe circuit protection (breakers or fu uses) to see that th hey are not trippeed or open. B Breakers and fuses s don’t trip or open n for no reason. Th hey indicate a fault which should bee investigated by liicensed personnell. See below. K Kiln Won’t Reach T Temperature E Error Codes associa ated with a kiln no ot reaching temperature are E– 1, E–– 3, E– 5 and E– 8.. A few possibilitiees here: Y Your particular mo odel may use the P Power Tame featurre. This feature allows you to reducee the power produ uced at the lid heaating elements forr deep slumps. If the Poweer Tame setting is too low it’s possib ble that temperatu ure will not be reaached. Increase Po ower Tame settingg. A A low voltage will c certainly slow a killn down and, if thee drop is low enou ugh, it may cause ffailure to reach temperature. You caan test this using tthe VOLT test d described on page 23. This test is best performed at th he time of trouble. Low voltage is geenerally associated d with your powerr service or provider and is raarely a fault in thee kiln. A A failed element re educes the heat prroduced. Failed eleements tend to bee very visual and are easily seen. With the kiln off (nott running and unplugged) have a a look at the eleme ents for any breaks. If you see no breaks in the heating element then su uspect a relay prob blem. to close) reduces the heat produced. While a relay faailure acts like an eelement failure, a relay is not visiblee. If the heating eleements A A failed relay (fails a appear to be intact t replace the relayy. K Kiln won’t stop firi ing (won’t shut offf) E Error Codes associa ated with a kiln no ot shutting off are E– 2 or E‐4 or E– d d. M Most likely a failed d relay (failed close ed). A failed relay may cause the kiln n temperature to iincrease when it should be decreasiing. Depending up pon your p particular kiln mod del you may see up p to 3 relays used in its design. Identtifying the failed reelay is fairly simple as the element cconnected to it will remain on. U Unplug the kiln and d remove the kiln control panel. Sim mply follow the eleement leads to thee relay to identify iit. Relays are main ntenance items and we recommend replaccing all of them wh hen needing to rep place one. C Check your program m. While you won n’t see the error co odes if you’ve proggrammed incorrecctly this problem iss possible. F Fail is Displayed T The thermocouple (temperature sen nsor) circuit is faultty. The thermocou uple circuit is brokken at some point, usually the therm mocouple itself. Th he thermocouple circu uit consists of the thermocouple, an ny connecting bloccks and the thermo ocouple lead wire connecting to thee Rampmaster. C Circuit Protection O Opens (“Blown” B Breaker or Fuse) C Circuit protection c can open for vario ous reasons. The BIG TWO are a shorrt circuit and overheating. We’ll look at each separateely. S Short circuits occur r when line voltage finds it’s way to another line or grround. They are ussually violent occu urrences with lots of noise, flashes o of light and m maybe a bit of smo oke! During a shorrt circuit the ampeerage goes very higgh. This increase in n amperage exceeeds your breaker/ffuse rating which ccauses them to o open (“blow”). TThat’s exactly whyy they’re there. Sho ort circuits generaally happen immed diately upon pluggging the kiln in or rrunning the firing. They g generally do NOT h happen after the kkiln has been on fo or some time. O Overheating of the e breakers/fuses caan cause them to open (“blow”). Ovverheating needs ttime to happen. If the kiln is runningg fine for a while aand then the b breakers or the fus ses open we can be fairly confident tthat the problem is overheating and d not a short circuit. Overheating reduces the amountt of a amperage a breake er/fuse will allow tto pass before it o opens. Overheatingg is caused by man ny factors, the mo ost common are: lo oose wire connecttions at the b breakers/fuses, the e size of the wire ““feeding” the kiln is too small, the electrical receptacle is faulty or breaker/fuse is faulty. RM3 - Mar. 2011 2 rev. 1 Kiiln Troubleshooting g Continued from Previous Page R Reasons for a Faile ed Heating Elemen nt G Glass kiln elements s rarely fail on their own. When theyy do fail it’s usually from contaminaation. Contamination is stuff like glasss bits, glass separrator, fiber p paper, etc. that fin e element groove. If you do have an element failure, d double check the ggroove at the poin nt of failure. Remo ove power ds its way into the fo orm the kiln and aattempt to remove e any debris from tthe groove with a sharp tool. Not do oing so may allow the debris to desttroy the replacement element. R Reasons for a Faile ed Relay R Relays are the swit tches that turn the e heating elements on and off. Theyy are moving parts and they’re working all the time. Lo ong, slow firings and extended a anneals make the r relays work more which shortens th heir overall lifespan. Relay replacement is expected att some point. M More Troubleshoo oting Features T The Rampmaster c contains a selection of troubleshootiing features that u use various numerrical keys to accesss actual firing perfformance data while firing.
