Fredericton Sports Investment Inc. thought it would be a good idea to honour local sports heroes. This was seen as particularly important for the Capital City of New Brunswick. The group approached Fredericton City Council in May 1991 with the idea and Council strongly supported the concept. It was unanimously agreed that the Wall should be established in the new Sheraton Hotel (now the Delta) with Mr. John Kileel doing the work to see that an appropriate space within the facility be made available. It was agreed that an honour plaque be erected on the top center of the wall honouring those Fredericton athletes who have been inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame. The criteria for selection to the Wall from nominated candidates were based on existing criteria from other established Halls and Walls of Fame throughout New Brunswick. The Fredericton Wall of Fame seeks to honour athletes, builders and teams who have excelled on behalf of the City. 11 FREDERICTON SPORTS INVESTMENT A Short History Fredericton Sports Investment started as a group of local hockey supporters who banded together to operate the Fredericton Jr. Red Wings in the New Brunswick Jr. B Hockey League in 1981. The major fund raising initiative was an auction at which the public could bid on various items donated by local merchants. After only two years the league folded, but FSI continued its annual fund raising activities, with the proceeds going to support “minor hockey and other young athletes and teams”. The format was changed to a Dinner/Auction in 1990, hi-lited by a “name” guest speaker. This change proved to be very successful with gross revenues steadily increasing from $31,000 in 1990 to $245,000 in 2013. Jim Ralph, Jacques Demers, Harry Neal, Ron MacLean, Brian Burke, Dennis Hull, Willie O’Ree, Dale Hawerchuk, Rod Black, plus Fredericton’s own Marianne Limpert and Matt Stairs, are among those who have graced our head table. FSI has, from the 33 auctions, returned over $3 million to this community. While most of the funds are distributed to hockey players and teams, FSI has, during the last decade, made over 500 grants in 42 other sports. FSI administers two special endowment funds – The Timmy Munn Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Timmy Munn Needy Kids Fund. The former provides financial support for university freshmen while the latter provides funds for kids who can not afford to play their sport. Both funds are in memory of deceased hockey player Timmy Munn, and were established from the sales of a series of limited edition hockey prints donated to FSI by Tim’s mother, celebrated artist Catherine Karnes Munn. Another initiative of FSI is the Fredericton Sports Wall of Fame, inaugurated in 1992, which can be viewed in its newly renovated display at the Delta Hotel. Every May, a reception and dinner are held to honour and induct the successful nominees, who now total 74 Athletes, 56 Builders and 17 Teams. At that event we also recognize Fredericton’s Athlete of the Year with the Myer and Jack Budovitch Trophy, and long time sports volunteers with the Bill MacGillivary Volunteer Award. FSI also partners with the NB Assn. of Community Living to present an Elimination Draw each October, providing more funds for amateur sports in our community. FSI has a volunteer Board of 38 local business, professional and retired individuals who give of their time to support the youth of this community. For more information go to our website at www.fsi-nb.ca February 2015 12 On behalf of my colleagues on Council and the citizens of Fredericton, I am pleased to extend sincere congratulations to 2015 Inductees into the City of Fredericton Sports Wall of Fame. We are extremely proud of each of you and your individual accomplishments attained in your sports careers. It is through your dedication and commitment, that you have provided a legacy to your fellow citizens, as well as to the entire Province. Your foresight and strength will provide encouragement to enable other young athletes to strive for successes too. Your dedication and training to your individual sports is being recognized today and, for this, we are proud to extend this honor to you. Again, Congratulations! He was the first Canadian MVP in the American Wheelchair Basketball League. Durepos is a three time New Brunswick male athlete of the year and is a member of the Canadian Wheelchair Basketball Wall of Fame. He was inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 2014. In Ernie Fitzsimmons’ book, the History of Hockey In Fredericton 1946-1969, he was described as a “slick puck-handling defenceman for a dozen years on the Caps blue line.” He was part of the Caps 1950-51 Maritime champions and Eastern Canadian finalists, where he and Boyd MacTavish were teammates. A tough, solid defenceman at five-footten and 170 pounds, he finished eighth in league scoring in the 1949-50 season with the Caps, scoring two goals and 12 assists for 14 points in nine games and adding another goal and an assist in five playoff games. Yeomans was part of three Maritime championship teams as a homegrown Fredericton player. He was also a great baseball talent in the capital city. As a pitcher, he had a long career with the Devon Tigers of the New Brunswick Senior League. After his playing career, he coached for several years in the Fredericton Youth Hockey Association, taking his New Brunswick midget team to the Wrigley Canadian Championship tournament (now the Telus Cup). He also coached teams at the intermediate level in both Fredericton and Woodstock. P.O. Box 1357 880 Prospect Street W. Her career on the golf course has been dominant. She has represented New Brunswick on provincial teams in each of six decades. She’s been a stalwart on women’s senior teams for 13 years from 1999 through 2014, won the senior women’s title in 2006, the Super Senior title in 2014 and has been a three time runner up. She was player of the year in the New Brunswick Ladies Golf Association in 1997 and runner up in 2006. In 1988, she finished second only to Lori Kane in the New Brunswick Ladies Amateur tournament. As a bowler, she represented Fredericton teams at the New Brunswick provincial championships for 33 straight years. She was captain of the winning team in1999 and part of runner up teams in 1982, 1988, 2010 and 2013. She has been a member of three Maritime championship teams and a member of the winning team at the Halifax Ladies International Bowling tournament in 2011. Her individual accomplishments are many: she won the high average at the Ladies provincial tournament two different times, was runner up another time, and had the tournament high triple of 409 in 1987. She continues to build on an impressive athletic resume. 17 2015 INDUCTEES WALL OF FAME ATHLETE Boyd MacTavish Boyd MacTavish began building an impressive career as an athlete beginning in midget and juvenile hockey, when he played for the IOOF Midgets in 1945-46 and the Juveniles in 1946-47. He led that team in scoring with 12 goals and nine assists in six games. His scoring magic continued with the Fredericton Dairy Kings in 1948-49, when he scored five goals and five assists in six games as the centre for the legendary Sewell brothers, Neil and Doug. They moved up to the Fredericton Caps of the Southern New Brunswick Hockey League the following year and led the Caps to the league title, with MacTavish scoring six goals and eight assists in eight games. The following year, the Caps captured the Maritime championship before losing to Noranda in the Eastern Canadian championship. MacTavish scored 12 goals and 19 assists in the Caps march to the Eastern Canadian championship. In six playoff games, he had three goals and five assists. The following year, the Caps won the 1951-52 New Brunswick/PEI championship, with MacTavish collecting 36 points in 12 games. Boyd appeared in exhibition games against the Montreal Canadiens and Chicago Blackhawks, scoring two goals in an exhibition game against Hockey Hall of Famer Harry Lumley. During the hockey off-season, Boyd was among the top hitters on his senior baseball team. He was stricken with polio in 1952, ending an athletic career that was destined to be among the best in New Brunswick. 18 2015 INDUCTEES WALL OF FAME ATHLETE David Sullivan David Sullivan is one of New Brunswick’s most successful curlers, winning 20 Provincial Championships from Juniors to Masters, five Maritime Championships and a National Championship. He represented New Brunswick at two Canadian Juniors, six Briers (twice tied for third) and seven Canadian Seniors. At the 1972 Brier, Sullivan was awarded the Ross Harstone Trophy for outstanding sportsmanship. Respected for his love for the sport and his skill, a triumph came when he skipped his team to victory at the 1994 Canadian Senior Men’s Curling Championship. In addition to competing, Sullivan took great pride in coaching teams skipped by his three sons to Provincial Junior Men’s Championship titles in 1987, 1989, and 1991. The pinnacle of his curling career came when he coached his eldest son’s “The Jim Sullivan Rink” to victories at the 1987 Canadian and the 1988 World Junior Men’s Curling Championship. David won twenty Provincial titles: two Junior, six Men’s, seven Senior and five Masters. Sullivan’s Maritime titles were two at the Intercollegiate level and three Masters. He competed at six Briers (1966, 1967, 1972, 1976, 1982, and 1983), a recognized achievement for that era. David Sullivan was inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 2014. RBC would like to congratulate all of the 2015 inductees and award winners. The award, commissioned by his fellow members of FSI, is an engraved plaque, presented annually to “Fredericton’s outstanding sport volunteer and community worker.” The script on the plaque reads “In memory of William “Bill” MacGillivary, honoring his volunteer service and commitment to excellence in the field of sport and recreation at the local, provincial, national and international level.” This year’s recipient is Rheal Bourque. The past winners of the William (Bill) MacGillivary Award were: JOHN AND GUS MAZZUCA JOHN WAITE ED DUNHAM TIM CANE KIM HEPDITCH FRANK JARDINE Ann Urquhart MARGIE & MIKE REED 20 2014 WILLIAM (BILL) MACGILLIVARY AWARD Rheal Bourque Rheal moved back to his hometown of Fredericton 32 years ago and committed much of his time to baseball and hockey, his 2 favorite sports. While most interested in coaching, he often took on many administrative positions. Over the years, he has served on the board of Fredericton Minor Baseball and Fredericton Youth Hockey. He has served as Division Manager, Zone Manager, Coordinator and Director, as well as Vice President of the NB Junior Hockey League and President of the City of Fredericton Intermediate Baseball League. Rheal often coached two teams at the same time in both sports. He believed that he was more productive on the field or in the rink, than in the boardrooms. In later years, he believed that after midget age, many players, both in Baseball and Hockey had no place to play. He organized several Junior Baseball teams, which then evolved into an Intermediate league. The league still operates today with five or six teams. He also got involved with Juvenile Hockey and along with coaches/managers from Moncton and Saint John; they formed the New Brunswick Junior Hockey League, which is still operating as an eleven team league. Although quite a few of his teams have had Championship seasons he is most proud of the many players that have and still show appreciation for having been on his teams. He has received several awards, including Award of Distinction (FYHA), Unsung Hero (City of Fredericton), Distinguished Citizen Award (City of Fredericton) and Hockey Canada Junior Hockey Recognition Award. 21 THE MYER AND JACK BUDOVITCH TROPHY This award originated with two brothers who were strong supporters of sport in the city of Fredericton. The 1940’s & 1950’s were times of imported senior hockey talent in Fredericton and with the financial and moral support of Myer Budovitch and others, this city was able to ice a very competitive team. Jack Budovitch devoted his attention to the Fredericton Caps following the end of the “Import Era” in senior hockey. Jack served as president for a number of years and also was a major financial supporter of the team. In 1956 The Budovitch family donated a trophy dedicated to Myer and Jack which was to be presented annually to Fredericton’s Outstanding Athlete. This designation was later broadened to include also Outstanding Team. The first winner of the Myer and Jack Budovitch trophy was Marjorie Squires and last year’s winner was Dayle Colpitts. The Myer and Jack Budovitch trophy unfortunately laid dormant for intervals of time until revived by Fredericton Sports Investment in 1999. The Athlete of the Year Award is now presented at the annual Fredericton Sports Wall of Fame Induction Dinner each May. But it’s a small group that have actually been able to find full time work in the N-H-L. Willie O’Ree, Danny Grant and Buster Harvey are the first three names on the Mount Rushmore of Fredericton hockey. The latest candidate to join them may be Goaltender Jake Allen of the St-Louis Blues. After paying his dues for several seasons in the minors, Allen is now the backup goaltender to Brian Elliot on a Stanley Cup contender in St-Louis. Ironically, the 24 year old also got to share the crease with his boyhood idol, Martin Brodeur for a short time this season. Brodeur came out of retirement for a short stint with the Blues. Allen won The Myer and Jack Budovitch award as Fredericton’s athlete of the year in 2008, after he was named to Canada’s national junior team. He wins it again in 2014, for breaking though a barrier that has eluded many prospects over the years...and becoming a full time NHLer. The recipient of the 2014 Myer and Jack Budovitch Award goes to goaltender Jake Allen. 2015 Fredericton Sports Wall of Fame 23 Congratulations to all Inductees!
