Public Talk and Film Screening on Post-Modern artist Kurt Schwitters
Fredericton Playhouse | No charge | General admission
In partnership with the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, join art historian and writer, Laurie Glenn Norris in an
exploration of the artwork of post-modern artist Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948). In 1919, Schwitters created
his own artistic movement when he grouped together all aspects of his painting, sculpture, architecture,
and literature under the heading of Merz.
Film Screening: The Schwitters Scandal: Kurt Schwitters (1996).
While Schwitters was alive he provoked the art world with his one-man Dada movement, Merz. His death
prompted several sensational inheritance lawsuits involving heirs, mistresses, the Norwegian government,
and the Marlborough Gallery. The film unravels a bizarre story of deceit, intrigue, power and money.

Fredericton Playhouse | $20 ($10 Spotlight Members) | Participation criteria will apply | Registration required
Theatre and dance companies are increasingly incorporating projection into their work, with results ranging from successful to
distracting. Projection is most successful when fully integrated into the production – working with and not against the other elements
of acting, set, costume and lighting design. Anthony Black (playwright and director for When it Rains) discusses the different ways
projection technology is being used in contemporary performing arts, using notable examples from world theatre and dance, and with
reference to the design of When it Rains, and his past collaborations with projection designer Nick Bottomley.

90 minutes | Fredericton Playhouse | No charge | General admission
July 3, 2003 was the 30th anniversary of the famous Hammersmith Odeon concert in which David Bowie famously
announced his retirement from performing live on stage as Ziggy Stardust.
To celebrate, EMI released the 2003 remastered version of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars: The Motion Picture.
With the sound remixed by Tony Visconti and Richard Tozzoli using the original 16 track tapes, a ‘truer’ live mix emerged
with most of the overdubs from 1981 removed, and the stereo recording of the audience restored.

56 minutes | Fredericton Playhouse | No Charge | General admission
Screened in partnership with Cinema Politica Fredericton, the documentary film, On Tip Toe: Gentle Steps to Freedom, tells the inspiring story of the
group that introduced South African music to the world: Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
Nominated for an Academy Award, musicologists trace the origins of Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s music back to the oppression of the apartheid years.
Zulu men, driven off their land, were forced to find jobs in the cities and mines, living in single sex hostels far from their families. To maintain contact
with their homeland, they invented a kind of singing and dancing called isicathamiya, meaning “on tip toe” descended from traditional Zulu stomping.
