From the President…..
As I reflect back on my years in Delta Omicron, I remember the time I became I member
of Sigma Chapter at Illinois Wesleyan University. I am sure that you all remember that time
for you as well. We joined our chapters for the friendships, music, and common interests.
Many of those friendships last a lifetime – our Delta Omicron membership is for a lifetime
too.
We have opportunities to stay involved and take advantage of what Delta Omicron has to
offer past graduation. Our Alumni Chapters and Clubs allow for continued sharing of music
and fellowship in the name of Della Omicron. If there is no group in your area, please contact
me and we will make sure you get information on how to start a group.
You can become part of the group on Facebook to share upcoming events, musicales,
and photos with members. Both Alumni and Collegiate Chapters should take advantage of
reaching members outside of their individual chapters. If you aren’t on Facebook, I would be
happy to list the event for you.
Want to network? Join our LinkedIn Group.
Do you have updated information to send about what you have been doing? Lani Yearicks,
Whistle Editor would love to hear from you. The newsletter is only as good as the information
she receives from chapters and individuals. Have you written an educational music article that
would be of interest to our membership? Please contact Janet Gross, WHEEL Editor. We
want to be able to feature what our talented members have accomplished and our passionate
about.
One of the purposes of Delta Omicron is “to give material aid to worthy students.” As a
dues paying or life member, regardless of when you became a member you can take advantage
of the summer scholarships that Delta Omicron offers. Through the Endowment Fund,
summer scholarships are offered to our members annually. Application information can be
found in future issues of The WHEEL or online at www.delta-omicron.org. The deadline to
apply is April 2014.
The Delta Omicron Foundation offers educational grants to both collegiate and alumni
members. Grant descriptions and application information can be found on the website (look
under National/D.O. Foundation) or through www.dofoundation.org.
No matter where we are in life, Delta Omicron should always be a part of it. We are all
a part of the tradition of Delta Omicron whether we are currently a member of a chapter or
are alumni at large. We must ALL repledge our loyalty and support to OUR beloved Delta
Omicron. In doing so, we will honor and pay tribute to our Founders Lorena Creamer, Mabel
Dunn, and Hazel Wilson for without their vision we would not be here today. I encourage
you all to be involved in the future of Delta Omicron – for myself, I don’t know what I would
do without it.

Professional Fraternity Association Conference
The Professional Fraternity Association (PFA) holds an annual conference for its member
fraternities and associate members. The conference was held September 6-8, 2013 at the
Hilton at The Ballpark in St. Louis, Missouri. Representing Delta Omicron was Jennifer
Klafeta, International President. Sessions were held on membership management, social
media, and fraternal law issues. Associate members in attendance provide services for all of
the fraternities. They include conference planning, fraternal jewelry, hotels and conference
centers, and CVBs to name a few.
Awards were presented to member fraternities at the Friday night banquet. The National
Interfraternity Music Council (NIMC) met during the PFA Conference. Comprised of all the
music and band fraternities, NIMC meets every year at the meeting. The member fraternities
meet to discuss and share what has happened during the year and areas of concern to all
NIMC member organizations.
PFA is a vital resource for Delta Omicron and the other member fraternities. Delta
Omicron is a charter member of PFA.

Summer Internship in Ghana
This past summer, Delta Iota member Katy Steklac spent her summer in Ghana for a
summer internship. Below she describes a “Typical Day in Ghana” as she experienced it this
past summer.
Typical Day in Ghana
by Katy Steklac
It's 6:00 am, and my alarm clock rings. I can hear the
banging of pots and pans coming from outside. My host
family has been up for at least two hours making sure
that the daily batch of kenkey, a Ghanaian staple made of
fermented corn and cassava, is ready to be sold.
I go outside to use the latrine, and my host mother, Auntie Christina, greets me with a
warm hug. The heavy rain from the night before has left not only thick humidity in the air
but also many puddles in the uneven ground. As I get ready for the day, I remember to spray
on my bug repellent heavily in hopes of not attracting malaria.
After eating breakfast with the other American volunteers that are staying with me, I head
off to work. Even at 7:00 am, Cape Coast is bustling with people and activity. It is not very
hot yet, so it is a great time to get work done. I hail a shared taxi right outside my house, and
I hop in with other Ghanaians who are on their way to work.
I walk up the long drive to Mary Queen of Peace Catholic School. I see a few students in
their blue uniforms that have arrived early, and as I get closer to the Class 1 classroom, five or
six students bust out of the doors and happily chant, “Teacher Katy! Teacher Katy!” They are
all eager to help me carry my lunch bag and backpack. As more students arrive, we sit around
their desks and read storybooks.
At 8:00 am, all of the students line up for assembly outside at the flagpole. We say morning
prayers, sing songs, including the Ghanaian national anthem. After that, the students of Class
1 go through their daily core subjects of English, Math, Natural Science, Religious Education,
Fante (Ghanaian Language), Creative Arts, and Physical Education. I teach English lessons,
and we do a lot of hand motions and games to learn new vocabulary.
Even though there is no music education spelled out in their curriculum, the students at
MQPCS infuse their learning with music. Everything that they do is associated with a song
or a dance, and every Ghanaian is a good dancer! I teach them some new songs, and they are
completely happy singing it 342 times.
After school, I take a taxi into downtown Cape Coast to go shopping with other volunteers
for fabric for the new dresses that I am planning on having made by local seamstresses. There
is the usual chaotic bustling: cars honking every three seconds, women carrying anything and
everything on their heads, people dancing in the streets, and more. I'll be surprised if I don't
received a marriage proposal by the time I get home. (In Ghana, a proposal simply means that
a man is interested in you!)
After haggling on some beautiful orange Batik tie dye cloth, I make my way home for
dinner. Because it is technically the Ghanaian winter in June, it gets dark at 5:30 pm! When I
arrive home, there are many people hanging out in the courtyard of our house. I have a hard
time deciding who actually lives here because people are in and out so much. Some of my host
relatives attempt to teach me some new Fante words in an effort to improve my language skills.
Auntie Christina makes me some fried rice and chicken for dinner. I tried some of the
traditional Ghanaian dishes earlier in our stay, but the dough texture of the staples was too
much for me, and I thought I better stick to rice and chicken.
After dinner, the volunteers and I continue our attempts to teach Auntie Christina and
our little sisters the card game, Spoons! The language barrier makes it frustrating at first, but
we are getting better at it!
And soon, it is time for bed. It is only 8:00 pm, but as I often feel at the end of each day,
I am exhausted from the days events. I love being culturally immersed, and I hope that my
Ghanaian experiences will have a profound impact on my future career as a music educator.

National Patron JoAnn Falletta Conducts
at the Peninsula Music Festival
Zeta Delta members and guests traveled to Door County in Upper Wisconsin this past
summer on August 20, 2013 to see Delta Omicron National Patron JoAnn Falletta
conduct the Upper Peninsula Symphony Orchestra at the annual Peninsula Music Festival.
JoAnn Falletta guest conducted the seventh concert of the season “Crossing the Channel” and
the audience enjoyed Suite from Mother Goose by Maurice Ravel, Scottish Fantasy for Violin
and Orchestra and Harp, Op. 46 by Max Bruch, Suite from Pelléas et Mélisande, Op. 80 by
Gabriel Fauré, and Suite from Carmen by Georges Bizet.
Every August, musicians from some of the country’s major orchestras gather at the
Peninsula Music Festival to perform three weeks of symphonic concerts. August 2013
was the 61st Peninsula Music Festival. Delta Omicron National Patron Thor Johnson,
founder and conductor of the first festival had a dream of organizing a festival built around a
chamber orchestra, performing repertory for small orchestras which was seldom heard. With
the support of Lorenz Heise and Kay Wilson, a lot of meetings and organization, and a budget
of $10,000 the Peninsula Music Festival had its first performance at the Gibraltar School
gymnasium on August 6, 1953. Thor Johnson led the Festival for 22 years until his death
in 1975. Michael Charry was Music Director from 1978-1982 and Bryan Hanson became
Music Coordinator in 1982 and brought in many guest conductors to help lead the orchestra.
In 1985, Victor Yampolsky was appointed as Music Director and Conductor and the festiv
al has continued to grow and develop. The orchestra today consists of a full symphony of
64 members and concerts are now held at the Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek,
Wisconsin.
JoAnn Falletta is internationally celebrated as a vibrant ambassador for music and an
inspiring artistic leader. An effervescent and exuberant figure on the podium, she has been
praised by The Washington Post as having “Toscanini’s tight control over ensemble, Walter’s
affectionate balancing of inner voices, Stokowski’s gutsy showmanship, and a controlled frenzy
worthy of Bernstein.” Acclaimed by The New York Times as “one of the finest conductors of
her generation,” she serves as the Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and
the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Principal Conductor of the Ulster Orchestra in Belfast,
Northern Ireland, and Principal Guest Conductor of both the Phoenix Symphony and the
Brevard Music Center. Ms. Falletta has held the positions of artistic advisor to the Honolulu
Symphony, music director of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, associate conductor of

the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and
music director of the Denver Chamber
Orchestra, the Queens Philharmonic and
the Women’s Philharmonic. Ms. Falletta
received her undergraduate degree from the
Mannes College of Music in New York and
her master’s and doctorate degrees from The
Juilliard School. More information about
JoAnn Falletta can be found at: http://www.
joannfalletta.com/biography.html.
Ms. Falletta was initiated as a National
Patron of Delta Omicron by Delta Eta Chapter, University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee
and sponsored by Zeta Delta. Maestro Falletta was Assistant Conductor of the Milwaukee
Symphony at the time.
Zeta Deltas and guests met with JoAnn Falletta and her husband after the performance on
August 20. They were greeted with hugs and appreciation for attending the concert. A small
memento gift was given to Ms. Falletta by Zeta Delta members. The musical impact left by
the inspirational concert will remain with Zeta Delta members and guests for a lifetime.

Volunteer of the Year Award
Rebecca Moore
Rebecca Moore (aka Becky) is a longtime faithful member of Zeta Omicron Alumni
Chapter, located in Kent, Ohio. What makes Becky amazing is that at age 94 she is still
teaching! Becky volunteers and works with pre-school age children in Cleveland, Ohio. The
classroom teachers plan on what days she teaches and Becky works with the children playing
rhythm instruments and teaching movement through the Dalcroze method. The teachers love
having her there and they say she has a calming effect on the young students. To quote Becky,
“It always amazing what three-year-olds can do.” Becky finds her time teaching fascinating and
enjoys observing the student reactions and responses. Becky was recently chosen “Volunteer
of the Year” by the Cleveland Music School Settlement. This award is presented annually to
an individual who demonstrated outstanding commitment and dedication to advancing the
mission and programs of The Music Settlement.

The Wheel of Delta Omicron, Fall 2013
Help Restore the Delta Omicron Studio
The MacDowell Colony, located in Peterborough, New Hampshire was founded in 1907
by composer Edward MacDowell and his wife Marian. It is the nation’s leading artist colony
and nurtures the arts by offering writers, visual artists, composers, filmmakers, playwrights,
interdisciplinary artists and architects an inspiring environment to create and produce
enduring works of the imagination. There are no residency fees at MacDowell. The Colony is
supported by contributions and an endowment.
Delta Omicron decided at the 1924 Delta Omicron Convention to build a studio at the
MacDowell Colony, and on August 1, 1928 the Delta Omicron Studio was finished and
ready for occupancy. The Delta Omicron studio is 84 years old now and is in need of major
renovations. The MacDowell Colony has called on Delta Omicron to raise the $170,000
needed to upgrade the heating system, plumbing, and interior and to add more space to the
studio to accommodate the Petzold-Collyer Memorial Piano.
The Delta Omicron Foundation is asking for the support of Delta Omicron chapters and
collegiate and alumni members to help raise the funds needed to make the Delta Omicron
Studio at MacDowell Colony an ideal creative home for future composers once again.
How Chapters and Members Can Help
Just as Delta Omicron Chapters pledged support for the studio construction in 1925,
we now call on all chapters and members to help with this restoration project. Our hope
is that each chapter will donate to the Foundation's Delta Omicron Restoration Project
annually over this triennium as they did years ago. This donation can fulfill and represent
one of your chapter's service or national projects for the year. Chapter and individual member
donations will be recognized in Foundation publications annually and at the 2015 Triennial
Conference. Chapters who donate will be recognized with a certificate of appreciation at the
