THE HOTTEST
RACE BIKES FOR FUTURE CHAMPIONS
At both the amateur and professional levels, Kawasaki has long been the dominant brand in minimotocrossing, with many of today's top professional riders getting their start on KX minicrossers.
Kawasaki continued this tradition by completely revamping the green meanies from 2014.
Designed with the same philosophy of putting riders on the top step of the podium – a philosophy that has
not changed since the creation of the KX brand 40 years ago – these new machines feature significantly
boosted engine and chassis performance; improved ergonomics care of all-new flush-fit bodywork, new seat
and adjustable handlebar position; and sharp factory looks just like the KX450F ridden by Kawasakifactory
riders.
With these new KX models, pushing to the front of the pack has never been so easy or so much fun.
THE 84 cc RACING ENGINE
Engine
H Liquid-cooled, two-stroke Single engine with piston reed valve induction.
H Cylinder bore treatment has changed from electrofusion coating to nikasil plating contributing to
increased durability.
H Piston features a single piston ring. The reduced friction helps to minimise mechanical loss.
H PWK 28 semi-flat slide carburettor positions the nozzle jet close to the cylinder for sharp response across
the rev range.
H Carbon-fibre reeds with mesh oriented
o
at 45 for ideal response characteristics.
Reed thickness (0.42 mm) ideal for lowand mid-range response.
H Precise, digital CDI ignition delivers a
hot spark. Compact igniter with direct
coupler eases maintenance.
H Resin blocks added to the crankshaft
decrease the volume of the crankcase. The
resultant greater primary pressure ratio
contributes to increased engine
performance.
H Increased tightness of the press fit of
the crank pin, and larger-diameter (ø81 mm
>> ø83 mm) crankshaft weights offer
increased rigidity and durability.
H Large radiator is 240 mm high and
wider 112.6 mm wide, offering a 8.5 kW
cooling performance to match the high
engine output.
H Separate clutch cover gives easy access to the clutch.
H Pull-type clutch actuation for smooth operation and easy maintenance.
V Large air intake on the right side of the airbox improves airflow to the air cleaner.
H Environmentally friendly muffler reduces noise levels without sacrificing power. Steel wool layer between
baffle and glass wool layer extends glass wool service life. Enclosed muffler-end shape resists mudclogging.
EXCEPTIONAL CHASSIS PERFORMANCE
Chassis, suspension and brake systems are designed to allow young racers to ride at a higher pace.
Supension
H 36 mm inverted front fork features revised valve construction that delivers improved damping and greater
bottoming resistance. The shim-stack type valves
(the same style used on the larger KX models),
generate greater compression and rebound
damping force than port style, allowing higherpaced riding and contributing to increased ride
comfort.
H Revised front fork bottom cases (axle
brackets) are 12.5 mm shorter, resulting in
greater clearance in turns.
H Uni-Trak rear suspension is adjustable
for compression and rebound damping, and
preload. Compression damping mechanism for
the rear shock allows compression damping force
to be generated at slower stroke speeds,
contributing to a more stable ride feel. This
mechanism is 24-way adjustable for compression
damping, 21-way adjustable for rebound
damping.
Brakes
H Petal disc brakes front and rear, just like the larger KX models,
contribute to strong braking performance.
H Large-diameter 220 mm front brake gripped by a dual-piston
caliper is complemented by a 184 mm disc and single-piston
caliper at the rear.
Frame
H Sturdy perimeter frame, designed to harness the engine's
power, offers the advantages of strength and torsional rigidity,
allowing young riders to push hard on the track.
SIZED RIGHT
Being on a bike that is sized right for a growing body is extremely important – especially for young up-andcoming racers learning how to get the most from themselves and their bikes. In addition to being available in
two sizes, the KX85/85-II has bodywork that not only reinforces their KX lineage, but contributes to improved
ergonomics for enhanced comfort and control.
Adjustable handlebar: 6 positions
H Adjustable handlebar allows riders to custom-fit their riding position.
H Riders are able to choose from six possible handlebar positions. Collars offer a choice of three heights
(STD, +5 mm, +10 mm), while reversible handlebar clamps allow two forward/rearward positions (STD, +10
mm FWD).
Slim ergonomics
H Bodywork follows the direction of the larger KX450F and KX250F. In addition to contributing to strong
factory looks, these parts form a slim ergonomics package that facilitates rider movement.
H Fuel tank features a flatter top that contributes to improved ergonomics. Tank volume is 5 litres.
H A flat-style seat, like on the KX450F/250F, makes it easier for riders to slide forward and back to adjust
their riding position.
H Minimalist engine shrouds are designed to be small and are slim where they come in contact with the
rider's legs. 2-tone design was achieved using a double-injection moulding process.
H Minimalist side covers are also made as small as possible.
H Seams between the shrouds, seat and side covers are very flush, which facilitates control as well as
moving around on the bike.
H The handlebar bend contributes to increased riding comfort and control, enabling dynamic riding and
catering to a wider range of riders.
UNMISTAKABLE KX DNA
Just like our larger KX motocross models, the KX85 and KX85-II feature factory looks evocative of our works
racers. The bodywork, sharp graphics package and numerous factory-style touches contribute to a strong
KX family image and warn rivals of the race-winning potential housed in all KX motocross models.
Factory styling details
H The bodywork and graphics of the KX85/85-II give them a strong resemblance to the larger KX models.
H Front and rear fender designs match those used on larger KX models.
H Fork guards connect only at the bottom. The design (same as that used on the KX450F/250F) helps
prevent mud build-up. Kawasaki logo moulded into the plastic adds to the big bike image.
Rims are coated in black alumite1 – just like our factory racers.
H Fork and rear shock adjusters have a Green alumite1 finish like our U.S. factory racers.
H Factory-style graphics complement the racy performance.
H Brushed aluminium finish on the swingarm contributes to the quality image.
