WELCOME
TO THE FESTIVAL!
This year, the Oxfordshire Science Festival kickstarts a
new format! Thanks to the support of Science Oxford,
we’re hoping to build a major science festival in
Oxfordshire over the coming years. Meet the scientists
with lively hands-on activities, thought-provoking talks
and debates, and inspiring events showing science
through the arts.
For the first time, the festival takes place in summer, with
three exciting science fairs and an appealing line-up of
events. There is something for everyone, so don’t wait to
explore our programme!
We’re looking forward to sharing our passion for science
with you,

Kay Davies has dedicated her life to the cure
of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which is one
of the most common, fatal genetic disorders
diagnosed in children. She contributed to the
design of the pre-natal tests used around the
world. Her team isolated a key gene sequence
for the potential treatment of the disease,
and she’s now leading clinical trials for the
development of a cure. Learn about this
scientific journey, and engage in a
conversation with one of the most
remarkable Oxford scientists.

Henry Moseley
is regarded as
one of the most
important
scientific heroes
that never was.
Just one year
after solving
one of chemistry’s greatest
conundrums, he was killed
in action at Gallipoli in World
War One. His contribution to
science is a lasting legacy,
and his work underpins one
of the key techniques used
in modern science to
understand the atomic
make-up of materials. This
film, created by Diamond
Light Source, celebrates his
life and work, and is followed
by a panel discussion with
leading scientists who rely
on Moseley’s legacy to carry
out their research today.
This storytelling event run by Living Well Oxford explores
the medical condition known as stroke. Hear moving
personal stories from patients, doctors and researchers,
as they describe their unique perspectives on the
illness. What does it feel like to have a stroke and what
can life be like afterwards? What more do we need to
learn about strokes? What are the most effective
treatments and is prevention better than cure?

Shakespeare lived in
one of the most
unhealthy times and
places in history. Disease
was rife and hygiene
poor, physicians could
only be trained abroad,
and there was no such
thing as a public
medical lecture. Most
of Shakespeare’s own
insights into science
were learnt through
friends who would tell (or show!) him their discoveries.
This event will bring together professional actors from
Creation Theatre with medical historian Leah Astbury
and modern day researcher Martijn van de Bunt
to explore some of the medical references in
Shakespeare’s plays and how they relate to
contemporary science. From epilepsy to astrology,
malaria to anaesthesia, compare the science
of 400 years ago to the cutting edge research
we have today and discover what
has changed and what has
stayed the same.

THANK YOU
(c) Vivacious Mel Photography
Oxfordshire Science Festival is a charity
dedicated to building a nationally
renowned science festival which
engages people in science by offering
accessible, creative, and relevant
activities to the broadest possible range
of people so that they will have a better
understanding of how science is part of,
and impacts on, their everyday life. We
provide a platform for the many
outstanding scientists and research
organisations in Oxfordshire to connect
with a diverse audience about what they
do, facilitate dialogue between scientists
and the public, and provide interactive
science events with broad and lasting
impact which will encourage increased
public engagement across the region.
