Wow!...how fast time goes. Our one year
anniversary issue is out. It has been so
much fun to watch Rebel Rider Magazine
grow. We are thankful to all our advertisers and readers who have believed in our
philosophy and supported us.

We hope everyone enjoyed Leesburg
Bikefest, after four days of hard work I
came home about 3 PM on Sunday of the
event, kicked back, and gave in to the
comfort of my couch, and love of my
Rotty Duke. It was great to be back
home.
Our issue this month focuses on events
taking place for those who have served
our great nation. Memorial Day weekend
Rebel Rider Magazine and the American
Legion Post 35 in Mt. Dora have planned
a Welcome Home event, see flyer page
17. Everyone is welcome to join us.
For those of you headed to Rolling Thunder my thoughts are with you. This is the

American Legion Rider
Saturday morning April 2 started out with my truck
having it’s oil changed. After returning the truck back to
my better half I mounted our Trike and headed east to
DeSoto County then North over to Hardee County for it
was my last two Magazine drops this month.

Rebel Rider Magazine/Spiritwind Riders mission was to
attend Nam Knights Westside 5th Annual Pig Roast
Fund Raiser To benefit the Haley House Fund and Law
Enforcement Charities. By the time I arrived there this
event was in full swing with over 500 bikes parked in
the field with a couple hundred cars & trucks also. In
the vendors area I did stop to visit with a new friend of
Rebel Rider Attorney Brad Sounders. In time of need
Mr. Hog-Law is my choice to fight for my rights

Today’s event took place at the Winthrop Pole Barn on
Bloomingdale Ave in Riverview Florida. I did have a

Congratulations to those of you who did a lot of ridding during Leesburg Bikefest. Many of you found one of my favorite
watering holes...Anderson’s Little Lake Harris Pub in Astatula where you can always get an ice cold draft for a buck.
Anderson’s has become a fantastic place for bikers to visit
because of its unique location being only a few miles from
Lake County’s famous Sugar Loaf Mountain and Hwy 455
(which takes you the back way to Oakland and Winter Garden) providing some of the best riding in our state. 455 is one
of Florida Scenic Highways most protected roads. If you have
not taken the ride, just check in at Anderson’s on your way
through Astatula and they will head you in the right direction.
I talked to Paul Anderson after Leesburg Bikefest ended, he
told me they had a lot of bikes come through until Sunday
when it slowed down...50 bikers decided to hang out until late
Sunday night.
I visit Anderson’s frequently during the month. The owners
and bartenders are simply the best, they treat everyone the
way a person should be treated, this is not a place that has
signs hanging saying Bikers Welcome and then when you
walk in the door they say Please Remove Your Colors. If you
treat them with respect...respect you get in return. The rest are

Herbs Limestone
I know not to many of our Rebel Rider readers up in north
Florida or on the east coast have even heard of this one. East
of Manatee County just off S.R. 64 on South CR 663 which
turns into CR 661 there’s a road side Country Club in Limestone, Hardee County Florida. The last Saturday of the month
at Herb’s there is a Bar-B-Q, Blues, and Beer with a porch
chair view or just sit around the new Stage. Step inside
there’s a collection of old things that bring you back in time
when life was a little more laid back. I sat down to chat with

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, while serving
with the 3d Battalion, 29th Marines, 6th Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa in the Ryukyu Chain, 7 June 1945. Alert and ready for any hostile counteraction following his company's
seizure of an important hill objective, Pvt. McTureous was quick to observe the plight of company stretcher
bearers who were suddenly assailed by slashing machinegun fire as they attempted to evacuate wounded at the
rear of the newly won position. Determined to prevent further casualties, he quickly filled his jacket with hand
grenades and charged the enemy-occupied caves from which the concentrated barrage was emanating. Coolly
disregarding all personal danger as he waged his furious 1-man assault, he smashed grenades into the cave entrances, thereby diverting the heaviest fire from the stretcher bearers to his own person and, resolutely returning to his own lines under a blanketing hail of rifle and machinegun fire to replenish his supply of grenades,
dauntlessly continued his systematic reduction of Japanese strength until he himself sustained serious wounds
after silencing a large number of the hostile guns. Aware of his own critical condition and unwilling to further
endanger the lives of his comrades, he stoically crawled a distance of 200 yards to a sheltered position within
friendly lines before calling for aid. By his fearless initiative and bold tactics, Pvt. McTureous had succeeded
in neutralizing the enemy fire, killing 6 Japanese troops and effectively disorganizing the remainder of the savagely defending garrison. His outstanding valor and heroic spirit of self-sacrifice during a critical stage of operations reflect the highest credit upon himself and the U.S. Naval Service.

Franks place along the Main Street area took in a lot of
bikers. I watched the turn over in the area where they
finished their new out door full liquor bar, complete
with food and entertainment. No doubt this was a great
Hot Spot.
Leesburg Bikefest 2011
What started fifteen years ago as a small town Bikefest
has grown into a major event. In the beginning only a
hand full of hotels in the area came close to selling out,
now every hotel in the area if full. Joe Shipes the founder of this event has done one fabulous job with its
growth. He has gradually added on new locations for a
different variety of activities. This year the Mission Inn
became a part of the action. Who knows what Joe will
add next year? Anyway you look at it, this event without a doubt, has become the favorite of many bikers.
If you were riding alone trying to find a parking spot it
was not difficult, but if you were with a large group
trying to find a spot for all of you...Good Luck!!! Needless to say bikes were parked for about 20 or so city
blocks. The rest are pictures…We hope you enjoyed
Leesburg Bikefest as much as we did…Hark
I spent part of my day at Gator Harley-Davidson on Friday morning of the event. I started at 10 AM and when I
left around 12 noon, the parking area used by Gator was
near capacity. Gator had fantastic entertainment and as
many vendors on location as you would find at a
smaller bike event. Of Course, Main Street Leesburg
was simply loaded with vendors of all kinds, as well as
no shortage of entertainment and places to kick back
and enjoy a cold one.

wonderful smile, her wit, her desire to make everyone
happy. Maria and Thora changed Mt. Dora for the good.
They had a zest for the real deal, top notch business
where people could get a great meal at a great price.
Farewell My Good Friend
Frosty Mug Founder Maria
It was many years ago, Push and I were eating out at
Jeremiahs in Mt. Dora, two Icelandic Gals showed up.
They introduced themselves to us as Thora and Maria.
They were looking to open a new business in town.
Most of you would not know this but in downtown Mt.
Dora there is an old building standing that is called the
Renaissance Building. There was a basement in the
building with nothing but a dirt floor. With a lot of
imagination Thora and Maria went to work to make this
spot into what became the Frosty Mug.
Thinking back on my most fond memories would have
to be a surprise birthday party for Push. Maria, Thora
and Rita kept the party I set up for Push a great big secret. When we arrived in downtown Mt. Dora and
walked into the Frosty Mug, Rita told Push there were
sure a lot of bikers upstairs today...knowing that curiosity would get the best of her. She immediately headed
up to see what was going on, when at the top of the
steps walked into the Viking Lounge. Push was
shocked, about 60 friends including our two sons...one
from Ft. Lauderdale and the other from Tallahassee
where there to greet her. This secret had been kept by
the Frosty Mug family for about a month.
Years past and people poured into this wonderful Icelandic pub where they could find new and interesting
food prepared by those who understood the Icelandic
food dishes. Eventually they moved out of the basement
location and bought a larger two story building on forth
street with a liquor bar.
Push and I have so many wonderful memories when it
comes to Maria. Our heart goes out to the family, all of
us shall miss her dearly. When I close my eyes I will
always remember that wonderful person that loved everyone….Hark
Push and I were saddened to find out that our good
friend Maria pictured below passed away in her beloved
home of Iceland in early April. She was an incredible
lady that simply loved everyone. Bikers enjoyed her

US troops were withdrawn from Vietnam on March 30,
1973, under the terms of the Treaty of Paris. More than
58,000 members of the United States Armed Forces lost
their lives and more than 300,000 were wounded in
Vietnam.
Welcome Home
On March 30, 1973, all U.S. troops withdrew from
Vietnam. There were no ticker-tape parades honoring
the veterans, no triumphant marches or speeches as
there had been at the end of each of the World Wars.
America's Vietnam veterans returned home to silence,
or worse, in some cases to denigration for having
served their country during a controversial war.
The U.S. Senate resolution was introduced by Sen.
Richard Burr (R–North Carolina), Ranking Member of
the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs. This is the
second consecutive year he has introduced such a resolution.
The text of the announcement of the resolution's passage appears below.
Washington D.C – Today, Senator Richard Burr (RN.C.), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on
Veterans' Affairs, introduced a resolution to honor veterans who served in Vietnam by designating March
30th as "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day."
March 30th marks the anniversary of the day that combat and combat support units withdrew completely from
South Vietnam.
"Our soldiers served honorably and bravely in Vietnam.
Unfortunately, they arrived home to a country in political turmoil, and never received the recognition they deserve," Senator Burr said. "By setting March 30th aside
as a day to focus on our Vietnam veterans, we can show
our unified gratitude for their service and the sacrifices
that these veterans made on our behalf."
Senator Burr today also encouraged communities
throughout the country to take measures to commemorate this day by honoring Vietnam veterans in their
area. This is the second consecutive year that Senator
Burr has introduced a resolution for the establishment
of "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day." Senators
John Boozman (R-AR), Thad Cochran (R-MS), James
Inhofe (R-OK), and Johnny Isakson (R-GA) cosponsored the legislation.
The United States became involved in Vietnam because
policy-makers believed that if South Vietnam fell to a
communist government, communism would spread
throughout the rest of Southeast Asia. The US Armed
Forces began serving in an advisory role to the South
Vietnamese in 1961, and in 1965, ground combat troops
were sent into Vietnam. After many years of combat, all

ramps in Tavares on the right heading towards Leesburg. Another great place to stop if your thirsty and want and want
some unbelievable good food (try the burgers). Then it was
back to Zellwood Pub & Café where the bands were rockin’
the suds were flowin’ people were signing up for the silent
auction and like every 1st Sunday of the month they were
dishing out there incredible FREE BBQ and all the fixings
that go with it man good food . There were lots of vendors
lots of bikes and as usual lots of you guys out there supporting a good cause like The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation good
job. Well that’s it for know but remember WFO till you see

Hey ya’ll on April 3rd the Apopka Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored a great poker run for the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation starting at the Zellwood Pub & Café and the
weather couldn’t have been better the only thing that made it
better was the stops they picked. The first stop was Anderson’s Little Lake Harris Pub on CR 561 in Astatula what a
cool place to just kick back and have a few cold ones and
meet some nice folks then it was off to Lake Harris Hideaway
where you cant beat the view and just enjoy the Florida way
of life and eat some good food while doing it. Then it was off
to Buzzard Beach over off of 441 just past the public boat

Now that Leesburg Bikefest is over, take the time to go to
Buzzard Beach and enjoy what I call Lake County’s best
Hamburger. I eat one there often because none other compares to Jacks. The rest are pictures taken by Doc who hung
out with Jack all weekend. I am sure he has a thousand stories
to tell about the Wet-T Shirt contest. I saw a little bit of the
event, it got wild and crazy, everyone had a great time...Hark
Buzzard Beach Leesburg Bikefest
If you want to know how to put on a party for bikers just ask
Jack at Buzzard Beach. Last year was Jack’s first taste of
Leesburg Bikefest so he learned a lot. From what I could see
the thing that attracted bikers to Buzzard Beach was LOCATION, it simply does not get any better for Leesburg
Bikefest. Located directly on Lake Eustis it is not hard to find
a place to sit back, chill and enjoy everything going on. Hamburgers were on the outside grill, gals having fun with the
water slide, live entertainment by the Cruisers.

Saluting Those Who Serve Our Nation
Below Letter and pictures from LT, President of
the Nam Knights Orlando Chapter.
My son JT is on his sixth deployment at this time. His
first was Haiti when Aristide was over thrown. His second was Iraq. His third was Iraq. His fourth, fifth and
sixth Afghanistan. He is a S/Sgt in the Marine Corps.
Four years in the infantry and three years in Battalion
Recon and two years as a scout sniper and team leader
in Force Recon. His decorations are. Bronze Star w/
combatV, 2 Navy Commendation Medals w/Combat V's.
Navy Achievement Medal. Combat Action Ribbon with
Device. Plus all the other expeditionary awards. John
was promoted to Staff Sergeant at 23 years of age. He
is due to come home around the first of May. If he knew
I was writing this he would not be happy. He is very
humble about his service. He even wrote a letter to the
Commanding General of the Second Marine Division
requesting that he be permitted to refuse the Bronze
Star. His request was denied.

JT is also a member of the Nam Knights Of
America Orlando Chapter. The group follows his deployments closely.

The caravan pulled into the rest area as scheduled and, just as
planned, members of the Jacksonville Patriot Guard were
ready and waiting to carry out the final half of the day’s mission. After a short rest stop, Jacksonville Patriot Guard Ride
Captain Mike Burn gave a briefing on the final leg of the
journey, and everyone was once again on their way.
AO1 (AW) W. G. Best USN (Ret)
The love of family and friends. A life spent serving our country. Men and women devoted to honoring those that have
served. They all came together on Friday, April 1, 2011.
Bill Best, AO1 (AW) W. G. Best USN (Ret), passed away in
September of 2010. Bill had retired from the U. S. Navy after
having served our country for 23 years. He was born and
raised in a Navy family; his father, James Best, Sr. retired
from the Navy after 30 years, his older brother, James Best,
Jr. served for 25 years and his youngest brother, Pete served
for 8. Bill came into this world in Jacksonville, Florida while
his father was stationed there, and his last wish was to have a
Navy burial at sea. His family spent the next several months
making sure his wish would be granted.
It was a beautiful ride from Sanford to Jacksonville – perfect
weather, the sun shining, the feeling of pride riding in a group
with flags waving in the breeze. But now, as the procession
pulled up to the security gates of Naval Station Mayport,
emotions started to come to the surface. Bill had been gone
for months, but now family and friends were realizing that
this was the final goodbye.
The procession pulled in to the parking lot of a plain tan government building at 13:30 just as scheduled. A Navy vehicle
pulled up and two sailors stepped out, and Bill’s brother
signed a few forms. There was a very brief ceremony and
Bill’s remains were passed on to the sailors, and just like that
it was over. AO1 (AW) W. G. Best USN (Ret) was on his
way for his final voyage to sea. Brad
On the morning of April 1, 2011 the family and friends of
Bill Best, along with members of the Central Florida Patriot
Guard, gathered in a small park next to the Sanford Airport.
A brief memorial was held under the wings of a huge Navy
RA-5C Vigilante airplane, a monument from the days when
the Sanford Airport used to be a Naval Air Station. Bill’s
family all wore red t-shirts to honor Bill. He had served on
aircraft carriers in the Navy and his unit wore red in order to
be easily spotted on the flight deck.
The mission for the Patriot Guard this day was to escort
Bill’s remains to Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville.
Gene Goss of the Central Florida Patriot Guard was the
leader of the first leg of this mission; traveling up I-4 to I-95
north for a scheduled rendezvous with the Jacksonville Patriot Guard at the rest area at mile marker 302. As the procession pulled out of the park there was one of those “lump in
the throat” moments, those occasional comforting signs that
things are all right – a member of the Guard tapped his horn
and pointed to the sky and there, flying low over the procession was an American Bald Eagle.

Welcome To The Hideaway
Leesburg Bikefest 2011 was down in numbers so
they say!!! You could not prove it to me if you hung out
at the Hideaway, standing room only from around 1 PM
on was normal nearly everyday of Leesburg Bikefest.
The Hideaway is well known for its annual Wet T-shirt
Contest. For those of you who made it know, this becomes more than a Wet T contest...it gets real wild.
While at the Hideaway I looked at a magazine that said
another location in Lake County was the number one
biker bar in Lake...apparently who ever made this remark does not frequent the Hideaway. Even though
Leesburg Bikefest draws near record crowds to the
Hideaway it is not uncommon to see hundreds of bikers
show up on most weekends of any month.
Dan does one whale of a job attracting bikers to this
fabulous location. Many ride up on weekends from the
east and west coast to enjoy the beauty from the back
decks. I am not going to make statements such as the
Hideaway is the number one biker location in
Lake...what I am going to do is say...decide for yourself.

All attached a picture of me and my new motorcycle. Its
not quite like my Dyna but after all it is "HELMAND
DAVIDSON". It has a kick start and its 150cc of raw
power. This is what the sub-humans use to get around.
I have updated my personnel protective equipment
from what I normally wear back home due to the threat
of drive byes, rocket attacks, and the occasional grenade throwing. The only thing missing in the picture is
my colors which I'm sure would cause some serious
turf wars between us and the Taliban. Tell everyone I
said hello tonight at the club house.
Today is the 5 year anniversary of the guys in my platoon who got killed in ramadi, drink some for me tonight… J.T.

adult only goodies. There was also Free Beer and food
from Porky’s BBQ of Clermont. The music was crankin’
thanks to Bike Night Pam and Bike Night Phil and we all
need to say a big thanks to Peggy who works her butt off
setting these gigs up for all of us to enjoy month after
month also there was several hundred dollars raised for
Hospice we need to take care of those who took care of
us and make there last days with us as comfortable and

EASTER EGG HUNT
Hey ya’ll as always it’s a great ride from Mt. Dora to
Stormy Hill over Sugarloaf Mountain and you couldn’t
have asked for better weather. This adult Easter egg
hunt was a great idea first off to see a bunch of full
grown bikers running around looking under trailers and
in the bushes and trees was a sight to behold I guess the
old saying we may be growing older but we sure as dickens refuse to grow up what a hoot then again they had
some great prizes to give away in those eggs like 150

cars, and waive the open container laws so you can walk the
streets with an adult beverage. There’s no Bike Week type
price gouging here either – the highest price I paid for a beer
all weekend was better then the normal prices some places
charge. And it doesn’t hurt that Lake County has some of the
best riding in the state, and lots of great places to go outside
of downtown. Oh, and last but not least, everywhere you go,
the people are happy to have us here!
LEESBURG BIKEFEST
I remember rolling into Downtown Leesburg fifteen years
ago looking for the very first Leesburg Bikefest. I think even
back then it was billed as a three day event. For some reason I
couldn’t make it on Friday or Saturday that year, so Sunday
was my first chance to go. Well I rode into town and started
down Main Street and there was nothing, nobody anywhere,
even the few downtown restaurants and bars were closed. I
rode to the end of Main Street and stopped at a gas station
wondering if I was even in the right place. The clerk said they
had some people there Friday and Saturday but hardly anyone
showed up Sunday morning so the vendors all packed up and
left.
I’ll tell you, some rallies could sure take a few lessons from
Leesburg. Just because a rally is big and has been around for
a long time, you can’t just assume that everyone will keep
coming back no matter what you do to them.

Wow, what a difference fifteen years can make! Leesburg
Bikefest is now billed as the biggest 3-day bike event in the
United States and I can believe it. And you know, it’s really
pretty easy to understand how it got to be this big. The Leesburg Bikefest takes over all of downtown. There’s non-stop
great entertainment every day. They close off Main Street to

Holy Molly what a week-end we had here in Marion County!
There was stuff goin’ on all over the place. It started on April
2nd with a birthday party for my wonderful wife, Mama”J”,
who is half way to 100 now, anyway we had a great birth
celebration for her then rode out to The Blue Heron for a few
brewski’s and to visit with Steve, the owner and a great guy
to talk to, then we headed to Kool Kats to check on the”Ole
Man”, He manages the establishment and does a great job of
it too. After that we headed home to clean up my yard, ya
know how it is. Well, the next day (Apr 3rd), there is a monster H.O.G. run going thru Lake and Marion counties winding
up at Gator Joe’s on Lake Weir. We were hangin’ out with
the Ole Man and havin’ a few Bloody Mary’s at Kool Kats
where the band Déjà vu was crankin’ out some killer tunes

and wouldn't ya know it, my camera battery just took a dump,
no more pictures today. Man what a week-end! It ain’t over
yet because next is our 17th wedding anniversary at the same
time Leesburg Bikefest is goin’ on and the following weekend is our 4th annual Jam, looks like I’ll be busy. I hope everyone had a safe and great time in Leesburg and if you’re out
and about, check out Kool Kats, Fox Crossing, Gator Joe’s,
The Blue Heron Cove and many more in that area, just check
your rider maps, there is some great riding here in north central Florida so kick stands up, get those rider maps out, mount
up, crank up, and wick on it.

Hey ya’ll you know these days when there’s so much bad
being reported everywhere we look it’s refreshing and a
privilege to meet all you good people out there who care
so much for others in our neighborhoods and community’s as well as our own family’s and the out pouring of
the biker community that help support and encourage
others. This gathering was for the children the fine folks
from the Leesburg Boys And Girls Club were there holding a silent auction as well as the Leesburg P.D. for the
March of Dimes and the Optimists Club of Leesburg as
well as the S.I.D.S foundation Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. There was also the family of a 12 year old boy
named Hunter Austin who has Leukemia and has been
rendered paralyzed from the radiation and tumors if
anyone would like to make a donation for his family to
help out call Vincent at 352-446-1343 or email him at
[email protected]. Again Bike Night Pam was in attendance as well as the MAD HADDER BAND what a band.
Also there was radio personality Bobbie De Pew from
WQBQ 1410 AM of Leesburg I checked it out they've got

no more. It seems that most of the bike sales and service had
moved on to the Destination Daytona location in Ormond
Beach, so the Rossmeyer family has decided to turn the
building into a Harley-Davidson museum. Sounds like a
great addition to the Daytona Beach area. They hope to have
it open in time for Biketoberfest…..G’s 4th Annual Golf
Tournament was a huge success. There were 82 golfers
signed up and over $4k was raised for Father Flanagan’s
Boy’s & Girl’s Town of Central Florida. Great job!…..On
Saturday, May 14th, Seminole H-D and Rolling Thunder
Chapter 8 Florida will be hosting the 2nd Annual Salute to
Veterans. This is an all day event with the Traveling Viet
Nam Wall and lots of activities including a Veterans Memorial Ride that starts at 10:30 AM. Come on out and show
your support…..As always, if you have an event, business,
bike night, free food, or anything else of interest, let me
know so I can let everyone else know. Until next month, I’ll

found a copy of this month’s Rebel Rider Magazine. That
means we’re doing our job, getting our magazine into the

area covered. What good is that? Our goal here is to put
more copies of our magazine in more locations than any
other biker magazine. It doesn’t do our advertisers, or the
rides we help promote, any good if people can’t find us. If

to people that ride, and we’re not there, let us know - we’d
be more than happy to start dropping off copies of Rebel

more “family friendly”. Bike rallies are not supposed to be
family get-togethers. The Leesburg Bikefest is a great time –
don’t screw it up! If you’re that offended by a bike rally, take
the kids to Disney that weekend…..Man the free food list
just keeps gettin’ bigger every month! - Free BBQ the first
Sunday of the month at the Foxhead Lounge in Osteen. Free
breakfast every Sunday morning at O.B.’s in DeLand. Free
food (burgers, BBQ, sausage) and even free beer! the third
weekend of the month at Seminole H-D. Free BBQ the first
Sunday of the month at G’s Lounge. And free BBQ the third

Gainesville HOG Doing it RIGHT
While visiting I took some great pictures of Tin Type HarleyDavidson items in the store that I had not noticed in dealerships. These are great items to place on the wall in your home
bar areas, or your garage where many of us hang cool collectables. I understand the HOG Chapter raised over a thousand
dollars for the H.O.H.S fund...Great Job from all of us at Rebel Rider Magazine.
Last month I attended an event put on by the Gainesville
HOG Chapter. The event raised money H.O.H.S. which
stands for Hemo On The High Seas Dialysis Fund. This is in
support of the High Seas Rally October 30 through November
6 that raises funds for the same fund. The turn out was tremendous and the weather perfect. Though this chapter is very
small in comparison to many here in Florida, they do not
think small, and sure put on a great event. Certainly the owners of Gainesville Harley-Davidson should be very proud of
their chapter.
