It’s with joy
and gratitude that I am now
serving as your new executive
director. I consider my work
with you a sacred trust and will
steward this ministry with care and
faithfulness.
This article is being written on the 10th day of my work,
that is to say, I’m writing with only the beginnings of an
understanding of the vitality and complexity of the LWLBC
camp system. My earliest impressions are very favorable
especially as I grow to appreciate the level of competency
and commitment of the LWLBC team.

Camp Director
Luther Dell has always
been blessed with volunteers. They are people who have come from
many different connections. They have been campers, staff, relatives
of past campers/staff, and members of congregations that have
sent youth or retreat groups. This past summer, we had a couple of
unique experiences at Luther Dell.
Phil McNamara has worked on the the summer
staff from 2010-2012. He is currently a science
teacher at Eagle Valley Public Schools. Last
summer, Phil spent much of his summer up at
Luther Dell as a volunteer. He helped out in the
kitchen, played guitar for worships, chapels, and
campfires, and assisted in the making of some
videos for the program. He was even available
for last minute emergency runs to Grand Rapids. We are thankful for
the role that Phil played last summer in the ministry!
Transfiguration Lutheran Church is a congregation in Bloomington,
MN. They have sent us their 7th-12th graders and also send their
younger kids to Wapo for Youth Camp and Seeds. Last summer,
Transfiguration came up to Luther Dell to do a Mission Family Camp.
Families were there from June 21-29. They helped us to repair the
Staff Lounge, which included putting on a new roof, and raising the
floor and ceiling to get the sag out of both. They also helped to put
in all new windows in our dining area. Both projects were funded by
Transfiguration. Other
work that was done
included landscaping
around buildings,
cleaning buildings, lawn
care, moving rock,
laying pavers, installing
a new countertop in
the canteen, and many
other small projects.
When the work was
done for the day, it
was time to relax, have
campfires, take a dip in the lake, and to be proud
of the work that we did together. It was a time for the summer staff
to work side by side with the volunteers and a different ministry
happened. Because of their hard work and dedicated time, the camp
was looking great and ready to welcome the rest of the guests for
the summer. We are forever thankful for the work that was done
by Transfiguration. We are beyond excited to have them back this
coming summer!

It has been a year full of
overwhelming support for
Wilderness Canoe Base.
We’ve been blessed by so
many alumni and friends who have given of
themselves in unique and meaningful ways. Our new Medical Center,
in honor of Pastor Paul Monson, was completed with the work of
many hands and generous hearts in June 2014. The busy summer
camping and retreat season saw many alumni from recent and distant
years return to play a role, volunteer and visit. Of course, the Renewal
Campaign has prompted the generosity and renewed connections of
so many in the WCB family of supporters. It is abundantly clear; we
couldn’t do it without you!
This message of thanks must also be coupled with an invitation; to
return to Wilderness anytime, as often as you would like. We love
when alumni and friends make the trip up the Gunflint, whether
you were on staff last summer, or 30 years ago. That
sharing of stories is certainly a
sacred connection. We
have Sunday worship
in the Band of Brothers
Chapel every week
in the summer. We’re
happy to host you for
a fall retreat, or winter
getaway. Everyone’s
invited, always. Please

At the LWLBC Annual Meeting
on February 22, the Board of
Directors gave their approval to
move forward with the purchase of Wilderness Canoe Base! We have
received just over $800,000 in gifts and pledges so far
and are now looking forward to reaching our 1.2 million
goal by June 30, 2015. We welcome to you join us in this

At Ox Lake we live, learn, and
dream about the radical vision
that God has for our world. We grow in
community with Christ and with one another. We strive to
discover what it means to be Christ’s hands in our world.
We serve with heart.
Each summer, I am
privileged to have
the opportunity
of working with a
team of individuals
who embody
these values to
their core. They
are truly an
inspiration to
walk alongside throughout
the course of our 11-week summer program.
So you can imagine my excitement each December when we
have our annual staff reunion, which consists of an afternoon
of fellowship—reminiscing about the summer past, and
dreaming about the summer to come—usually coupled with
copious amounts of hot cocoa. This year, with the financial
help of Thrivent Action Plans, we were also able to embody our
core value of being Christ’s hands in the world by assembling
emergency bed kits for Avenues for Homeless Youth in north
Minneapolis. It was a great community-building project for
our team, and we had such a great time knowing that we were
contributing to our local community in a positive way.

Bear Trap Lake!

One of our favorite events of the year at Wapo is the Broomball
Tournament. This year we welcomed 20 teams to a fantastic day of
broomball competition on Bear Trap. This year we had the added
challenge of sub-zero temperatures for most of the day but the sun
was shining and the Wapo hill was blocking most of the wind. What
we like most about this event is how it brings together such a wide
variety of people to play together…and these teams have fans who
come to watch and cheer them on. So together with awesome
players, fans and our world-class broomball courts it turns out to be
such a fun day. We are thankful for all the spectators and players who
came out to enjoy some good competition on the broomball court
but most importantly to support camp. All proceeds from the event
help provide camperships for kids to attend camp.
