LOOK
AND YOU WILL FIND …
SO MUCH MORE TO HAWAI‘I THAN
YOU EVER IMAGINED
From breathtaking snow-capped mountains to sophisticated art trails, from superb
multi-award-winning restaurants to some of the best shopping on the planet — Hawai‘i
offers an incredible range of unforgettable and rewarding holiday experiences.
ADVENTURE AT ITS BEST
Feel the adrenalin-rush as you soar over
one of the world’s most active volcanoes in
a helicopter or walk the rim of a magnificent
crater. Fly at almost 60 km an hour above the
tree canopies via zipline (flying fox), escape
on an all-terrain-vehicle off-road adventure or
take on the extensive network of world-class
trails. Experienced hikers can’t go past the
challenging 18 km cliff-hugging Kalalau trail
along the Nāpali Coast — it’s classed as one
of the world’s most difficult climbs.
NATURE, UP CLOSE
AND PERSONAL
Hawai‘i excels when it comes to remarkable
close encounters with wildlife. From
unforgettable night dives with gentle manta
rays to snorkelling with dolphins and
extraordinary humpback whale-watching
expeditions, you will be captivated and
enthralled. Even swimming at a local beach
is likely to involve sharing the waters with a
friendly sea turtle.
RESORTS IN A CLASS OF
THEIR OWN
Discover your perfect ‘holiday base’. From
beautifully simple beach-side retreats to
some of the world’s most luxurious resorts
and heavenly health spas, Hawai‘i provides
a range of accommodation options to match
three- to five-star budgets.
SPORTS TO THE MAX
If ‘keeping fit’ is your mantra, Hawai‘i serves
up a program of world-class sporting events to
challenge, motivate and inspire — either as a
participant or spectator. Select from
picturesque marathon courses, triathlons and
biking events, and enjoy superb golfing and
water sports right across the Hawaiian Islands.
FAMILY GETAWAYS WITH
A DIFFERENCE
At the very heart of the Hawaiian culture is
a strong sense of ‘family’ (‘ohana’) so it is not
surprising that this philosophy influences the
way Hawai‘i looks after its younger visitors.
Children (‘keiki’) are warmly welcomed
everywhere, with a multitude of free and
low-cost attractions including great-value kids’
menus and world-class kids’ clubs bursting at
the seams with fabulous activities.
EPICUREAN JOURNEY
Hawai‘i has evolved into a sophisticated food
lovers’ paradise with the islands’ melting pot of
cultures reflected in the vast and adventurous
culinary landscape. Savour everything from
tasty, wholesome street fare to refined
restaurants ranked among America’s best.
Explore high-quality farmers’ markets and
working farms harvesting coffee, chocolate,
cheese, lavender and more. The Hawaiian
focus on just-picked, locally-sourced,
sustainable ingredients strongly resonates
with visitors from Australia and New Zealand.
Add an extra meaningful dimension to your
Hawai‘i experience. On Maunakea, the tallest
sea mountain in the world, stargaze with
experts at a glittering show enhanced by the
elevation, clear air and minimal light pollution.
Visit the Hawai‘i Ocean Science Technology
Park to hear how Hawai‘i is leading world
efforts to preserve food safety and the
environment. Friends of NELHA* offer
fascinating renewable energy tours, and the
spectacular McBryde Garden is where you’ll
encounter endangered Hawaiian species, a
living lab where scientists are still discovering
the secrets of these plants and the new
Biodiversity Trail featuring plant life through
the ages and what the future holds for the
planet. Expect to be amazed!

Visitors to Hawai‘i are warmly welcomed, right throughout the islands, in the all-embracing Spirit of Aloha
— a philosophy and way of living that embody a deep reverence for others and the natural environment.
Referring to themselves as keiki o ka ‘aina (‘children of the land’) and
maka‘ainana (‘eyes of the land’), the Hawaiian people believe that
nature provides and in return every man, woman and child must watch
over nature.
THE FLOWER LEI
The giving of a flower lei is synonymous
with Hawaiian hospitality. The ancient
Hawaiians used feathers, human hair
and shells, while the modern lei is made
of fresh flowers such as white ginger
and orchids.

HULA is a uniquely Hawaiian dance — accompanied by chant or song —
that preserves the stories, traditions and culture of Hawai‘i.
Hula is performed throughout the islands at festivals, competitions,
hotels and resorts. The Merrie Monarch Festival (usually held in March
or April) in Hilo on Hawai‘i Island is the world’s premier hula competition.

FEEL THE HISTORY
Hawai‘i became the USA’s 50th state in 1959, but its history goes back some 1500 years when
Polynesians from the Marquesas Islands near Tahiti miraculously sailed more than 3,200 km in
canoes, with only stars as their guide. They first set foot on the largest and most southern of the
Hawaiian Islands, Hawai‘i Island. Visit the amazing Bishop Museum (Honolulu) to find out more.

SACRED LAWS
Kapu (revered traditions) were a matter of life and death in ancient Hawaiian
culture, with the breaking of kapu punishable by death. This fate could only
be avoided if the kapu-breaker sought sanctuary in a pu‘uhonuā (sacred
refuge). Once there, a ceremony of absolution would free the law-breaker
to return to society. Visit the beautifully-restored refuge of Pu‘uhonua O
Hōnaunau National Historical Park (Hawai‘i Island) and feel the spirit of peace
and forgiveness that continues to bless this special place.
Bishop Museum (pictured left) is the best place to experience the history, arts and culture of Hawai‘i. You’ll love the Planetarium,
Science Adventure Center and lava-flow demonstrations. Open 9 am to 5 pm daily except Tuesdays.

UNIQUE SPECIES
Endemic Hawaiian species include the Nēnē (Hawaiian goose), Hawaiian hawk,
Laysan albatross, Hawaiian monk seal, Hawaiian hoary bat and the rare Haleakalā
silversword (a member of the daisy family). Today there are some 48 species of birds
unique to the Hawaiian Islands; 2,600 species of native flora; and, of the 450 reef fish
inhabiting Hawaiian waters, more than 120 are endemic to Hawai‘i.
Visit McBryde Garden (Kaua‘i) to see rare native flora; Waikīkī Aquarium (O‘ahu)
to view Hawaiian monk seals and native marine species; and Honolulu Zoo (O‘ahu)
for beautiful birds unique to Hawai‘i.

FRESH, LOCAL & SUSTAINABLE
FROM DAWN UNTIL THE WEE HOURS, VISITORS TO HAWAI‘I CAN ENJOY
A VAST MENU OF GASTRONOMIC DELIGHTS THAT ARE GUARANTEED
TO KEEP THE TASTE BUDS HAPPY.
Restaurants — from high-end bistros to pocket-sized hole-in-the wall kitchens —
proudly support local boutique farms in their pursuit of high-quality produce, and you’ll find
farm-to-table ingredients highlighted on many menus right across the Hawaiian Islands.
Vacation Like Royalty
New-Zealand-born and raised Executive Chef Brent
Martin from the celebrated Andaz Maui at Wailea
Resort is a passionate supporter of this philosophy.
Martin believes boutique farmers should be fairly
compensated for their talents and that the ‘farm-totable’ approach delivers superior produce with
maximum flavour and higher nutritional value for
the customer.
‘By connecting directly with food producers I can
ensure that the produce used in our kitchens is
not only safe but grown under as close-to-optimal
standards as possible,’ said Martin.
Martin added that sustainable farming practices
mean that native flora and fauna can also flourish,
alongside farming.

FRESH FOCUS ON FUSION
USING ‘FRESH’ AS A FOUNDATION, 12 GROUNDBREAKING HAWAI‘IBASED CHEFS ESTABLISHED ‘HAWAI‘I REGIONAL CUISINE’ IN 1991.
Now represented by some of the islands’ most award-winning restaurants, the culinary
movement inventively blends Hawai‘i’s diverse ethnic flavours and cooking styles with the
freshest island ingredients — such as cattle raised on lush Hawai‘i Island pastures, fruit and
vegetables grown in Maui’s rich volcanic soil and some of the best-quality fish in the world
from local Hawaiian waters. Today you’ll find delicious Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine throughout
the Hawaiian Islands.
‘Sometimes buying local means the cost is higher and sometimes it takes more time, but the reward is huge. Local farmers succeed and my guests enjoy fresh, regional ingredients and a dining experience they could have only in Hawai‘i.’

LOOKING AFTER
THE LAND
16 DISCOVER HAWAI‘I
Mālama ‘Āina (caring for the land) is a belief
that’s deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture.
In the days of Hawaiian chiefs, land was
divided into ahupua‘a (mini eco-systems)
and each parcel was a self-contained land
management system in which farmland,
fresh water and ocean resources were
carefully maintained. Today, the renewed
interest in sustainable agriculture is yielding
delicious surprises throughout the state.
EATING HAWAI‘I
Visitors can now follow favourite
ingredients to their source at Maui’s
plantations, farms and gardens. Some
1,219 metres above sea level in Kula,
take a tour of O‘o Farm — the property
of chef James McDonald (owner of
Pacific‘o, I‘O and the Feast at Lele —
all in Lāhainā). In the words of James
McDonald, ‘We’re going back in time.
We’re moving away from food being
processed to the way it used to be’.

Local palates have been influenced by generations of immigrants from around the globe so it’s not
surprising that Hawai‘i is a melting pot of countless ethnic specialties and some local delicacies

KAUA‘I
Re-connect with nature and revive your body and spirit. Kaua‘i is renowned for its natural beauty
and diverse scenic wonders such as the spectacular Grand Canyon of the Pacific — Waimea Canyon
— and the breathtaking mountain cliffs that rise from the ocean floor to form the magnificent, unspoiled
25 km-long Napali Coast. Visit gohawaii.com/au/kauai.
HAWAI‘I’S ISLAND
OF DISCOVERY
CRUISING MEANS HAPPY FAMILIES
EVERYONE’S HAPPY
One huge advantage of cruise is that it is
so easy to keep all members of the family
entertained, inspired and busy.
In fact, cruise companies are experts at putting
together programs that cater for varied ages,
interests, abilities and fitness levels. And, when
it comes to young travellers, there are so many
options that allow children to have fun and
independence away from mum and dad, but
in a safe, supervised environment. Pride of
America runs three kids’ clubs and a teens’
program: ‘Turtles’ (three-five years); ‘Seals’
(six-nine years); ‘Dolphins’ (10 to 12 years);
and ‘Entourage’ (13-17 years). In addition, a
toddlers’ program, ‘Guppies’, is available for
teeny travellers from six months of age up to
two years who are accompanied by a parent
or carer. The programs for each club are very
carefully crafted to maximise appeal to the target
age group and the generous opening hours
allow parents to take in some of the fabulous
evening shows or enjoy a leisurely dinner.
Boutique cruise operator Un-Cruise Adventures
promotes specific departures each season as
‘Kids in Nature’ cruises for families with children
under 12 years who are interested in having
close encounters with Hawai‘i’s extraordinary
natural world — from whale-watching and
snorkelling with turtles, to kayaking, paddle
boarding and fun cultural activities.
GREAT NEWS FOR SINGLES
Pride of America has launched a
selection of four single studio cabins
on Deck 13 (one of the upper decks)
with attractive single-occupancy
rates. Styled with cool retro fittings,
they open onto a shared ‘green
room’ for those times when you feel
like a chat. It’s a great way to make
friends and organise a party of two
or more for dinner, shore excursions
and evening shows.
istock image
One cruise, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride
of America, is located in Hawai‘i year-round.
Others visit for part of the year. Specialty,
short-duration cruises also operate offering
a particular focus such as golfing, whalewatching and dinner cruising. The 18-cabin
Safari Explorer motor yacht, for example,
repositions to Hawai‘i (from Alaska) to offer
boutique ‘Hawaiian Seascapes’ cruises from
November to early April during the Hawaiian
whale-watching season.
Various inter-island itineraries are available.
The Pride of America offers a seven-night
inter-Hawaiian-island round-trip itinerary,
departing Honolulu on O‘ahu every Saturday,
and cruising to Maui, Hawai‘i Island and
Kaua‘i — with the ship spending two full
days in port on each island before returning
to Honolulu. Safari Explorer offers a sevennight cruise from the less-explored Moloka‘i
to Hawai‘i Island via Lāna‘i and Maui (with
disembarkation on Hawai‘i Island).

THE THE HONOLULU FISH
AUCTION is based on the famous
Tokyo fish auction, where large fish are
sold individually. In most other parts of
the world, fish are sold to wholesalers
who generally control pricing. However,
the United Fishing Agency in Honolulu
operates on a different business model
which ensures individual fishermen
receive fair prices. In return, buyers
representing retailers, wholesalers and
restaurants gain access to the freshest
fish. Bidding is conducted in an open,
competitive forum, with higher-quality
fish scoring higher prices. Fishermen
are paid the same day for their catch.
It’s an innovative system that has been
operating since 1952.

O‘AHU —
SCENIC DRIVE ITINERARY
WINDWARD COAST
Ideally, experience the itinerary in stages over two to three days.
1.
Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve
Start early and head east of Waikīkī, taking the Kalaniana‘ole
Highway to Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. Here, enjoy a
unique snorkelling experience at one of Hawai‘i’s premier
marine parks, sheltered in the curved bay of a volcanic crater.
Small entrance fee applies. Open daily at 6 am (closed
Tuesdays).
2.
Hālona Blowhole
3.
Makapu‘u Point & Lighthouse
Continue on Kalaniana‘ole Highway, stopping off at Hālona
Blowhole — a lava tube that can shoot water up to nine metres
when the tide is high.
Five minutes up the road you’ll find Makapu‘u Point and
Lighthouse — the most easterly point on O‘ahu and known for
the island’s best body surfing. Take a leisurely hike to the top
of Makapu‘u sea cliff for whale watching, December to April.
4. Waimānalo Beach
Return to the highway and 10 minutes’ drive up the coast you’ll
discover Waimānalo Beach — perhaps the prettiest stretch of
white-sand beach on O‘ahu, with views of the majestic
Ko‘olau Range. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic.
5.
6.
Byodo-In Temple
Next make your way along Kāne‘ohe Bay Drive and onto
the Kahekili Highway to see Byodo-In Temple at the base
of the 610 meter Ko‘olau Range. A replica of a 900-year-old
Buddhist temple in Kyoto (Japan), it was built in memory of the
first Japanese immigrants to O‘ahu who worked in the sugar
plantations. Enter at the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park.
7.
Kualoa
8.
Nu‘uanu Pali Lookout
Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) / Tor Johnson
Continue north on the Kahekili Highway (it becomes
Kamehameha Highway) until Kualoa — one of the most sacred
sites on O‘ahu and listed on the National Register of Historical
Places. Visit Kualoa Ranch, in operation since 1850 and now
offering horseback riding, movie set tours, archery, jet skiing,
kayaking, snorkelling and simple relaxation over lunch (you can
pre-book or just walk in).
Head back towards Honolulu along the Kamehameha Highway
and then the Pali Highway. You’ll soon reach Nu‘uanu Pali
Lookout, with superb views of the sheer Ko‘olau cliffs.
Perched more than 900 meters above O‘ahu’s coast, it’s
the site of the battle of Nu‘uanu, where in 1795 Kamehameha I
won the struggle that finally united all islands south of
O‘ahu under one rule.
Kailua Beach
Follow the highway north and turn right at Kailua Road to
discover Kailua Beach. Stretch in the soft, white sand and take
a refreshing swim, kayak or windsurf in the beautiful waters.

At 8.06 am on 7 December 1941, the USS
MEMORIAL
Arizona was hit by an 800 kg armour-piercing
bomb that sank the massive battleship in
nine minutes, killing 1,177 crewmen. Today,
you can visit the USS Arizona Memorial to

respects to the brave soldiers who fell that
day. Begin at the Visitor Center to pick up
your free ticket which includes a film and

ended WWII on 2 September 1945 on the
Surrender Deck of the Battleship Missouri.
Now located at Pearl Harbor’s historic
Battleship Row, the massive ‘Mighty Mo’
is a living museum, with exhibits spanning
three wars and five decades of service.
Explore the decks, three football fields long
and twenty storeys tall, and take a tour of
the restricted areas.
Located within former WWII aeroplane

The USS Bowfin took part in the war in the
Pacific during World War II. Today, visitors
can explore the submarine museum to learn
about the battle under the seas and tour the

Dedicated on 7 December 2007, the USS
Oklahoma Memorial honours the 429
crewmen who lost their lives on this warship
in the Pearl Harbor attack. Approximately
nine torpedoes hit the vessel, capsizing the
battleship in only twelve minutes. Some
crewmen were trapped in compartments
below deck after the ship capsized. They
used hammers and wrenches to signal to
rescue crews on the surface and two days
after the attack, 32 men were rescued from
the overturned hull of the USS Oklahoma.

and cultural demonstrations are available.
Drive west along the southern coast of Maui. Follow Hāna

On Hawai‘i Island discover nature at its most powerful, with unique adventures in abundance.
Across a landscape encompassing all but two of the world’s climate zones, you can experience desert

all on one remarkable island. Try a spellbinding night snorkel with manta rays (Kona Coast) to top off
your list! Visit gohawaii.com/au/big-island.

1. HIKE THROUGH A VOLCANIC
CRATER
The Crater Rim Trail in Hawai‘i Volcanoes
National Park circles the summit of Kīlauea —
the most active of Hawai‘i Island’s five
volcanoes. Rich with plant and animal life,
the trail delivers diverse panoramas, steam
vents, craters, desert and lush rainforest.
Start at the Visitor Center for advice and
maps. Try part of the trail or, if experienced,
take on the all-day 18 km hike.
2. STARGAZE
For a truly remarkable experience stargaze
atop Maunakea, the tallest sea mountain in
the world and home to many international
observatories. At this elevation — in the clear
air with minimal light pollution — the stars
light up the sky like glitter.
3. SWIM WITH ONE OF THE
LARGEST FISH IN THE OCEAN
With a wingspan of up to six metres,
manta rays are often encountered on an
unforgettable night snorkel or dive off the
Kona coast.
Find out why the prestigious National
Geographic magazine has named the drive
around Hawai‘i Island among its ‘50 Ultimate
Road Trips in the World’. Remarkably, of the
13 climatic regions on earth, you’ll encounter
all but two (the Arctic and the Sahara) here
including desert plains, rainforest and
snow-capped mountains.

in the world where visitors can come face-to-face with an
active volcano. Currently three volcanoes are active in
Hawai‘i. On Hawai‘i Island you’ll find Maunaloa and Kīlauea
in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Maunaloa last erupted
in 1984 and Kīlauea has been continuously erupting since
1983. Lō‘ihi is located underwater off the southern coast of
Hawai‘i Island. Today, Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is

HIRE CARS
TIPPING GUIDELINES
LEGAL DRINKING AGE
CAMPING
•
Australian travellers do not require an
international driver’s licence as major car hire
companies accept an Australian licence. In
some cases drivers will need to be more than
25 years of age and in possession of a major
credit card. It’s best to pre-arrange car hire prior
to leaving Australia to avoid disappointment.
US standards on tipping apply:
Bar – US$0.50-$1 per drink
Concierge – US$1 for calling a taxi
Free shuttle – US$1 per short trip per person
Housekeeping – US$1 per bed per night
(leave it on the bedside table each morning)
Luggage porters – US$1 per bag
Room service – 10-15% of total bill
Taxi – 15% of fare
Tour guides – US$5-$10 per half day per
person/couple
21 years of age. Please note that ID is
required to enter bars or buy alcoholic drinks.
Many sites are available. Permits and fees
are required. Visit https://camping.ehawaii.
gov/camping/welcome.html.
On O‘ahu use ‘TheBus’ (thebus.org) and
Waikiki Trolley (waikikitrolley.com) — they’re easy, fun and affordable ways to see Waikīkī and Honolulu.
• With little to no public transport on
neighbouring islands, a hire car (or
combination of hire car and tours) is recommended.
Rental cars offer real value as they provide
the freedom and flexibility to truly experience
what each island has to offer. Remember
to drive on the right-hand side of the road.
You’ll find that most major roads are well
maintained.
• A ferry operates daily to/from Lāhainā (Maui) to Moloka‘i (90 minute trip) and Lāna‘i (60 minute trip).
•
Taxis are available at airports and key
tourist spots. Credit cards are not
commonly accepted and long taxi rides are costly. Taxis charge approximately US$45 for the 30-minute journey from Honolulu International Airport to Waikīkī.
•
In key tourist spots, shuttles operate between airports and hotels/resorts, and between resorts and nearby shopping precincts. Some are free of charge and others incur a small fee (check with your hotel/resort for details).
•
Helicopter tours are a great way to see the particularly scenic spots such as Waimea Canyon (Kaua‘i) and
inaccessible areas such as the Nāpali Coast (Kaua‘i).
• Passenger submarines are a novel,
comfortable and safe way to explore the wonders of Hawai‘i’s tropical waters.
• Motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles are available for hire.
Please ‘drive with aloha’ (slowly and without
the horn as it’s considered rude) and observe
speed limits. Avoid tailgating and the local
rule for single-lane bridges is to yield to
on-coming traffic. However, if you’re the
on-coming traffic and there is a line waiting
on the other side, stop and let your
neighbours cross.
ETIQUETTE TIPS
Respect property marked with kapu (‘off
limits’). Remember to mālama kai (respect
plants and animals). Make sure to mālama
‘aīna (respect the land) by staying on trails
and not disturbing plants. Remove shoes
when entering private homes and selected
B&Bs. Properly dispose of opala (rubbish).
Observe smoke-free laws which prohibit
smoking in enclosed public areas.

SERVICES
Many hotels in Hawai‘i provide internet or
Wi-Fi connectivity for their guests. Check with
your hotel regarding charges, if any. In addition
you’ll often find free Wi-Fi available in cafes
and restaurants.
STAYING IN TOUCH BY
PHONE
Check with your mobile phone provider
regarding international roaming charges as
they can be expensive. Many travellers opt to
disable international roaming and data downloading when they are overseas (consult your
mobile phone provider for instructions). One
way to keep your mobile bill under control while
away is to buy a pre-paid set-value SIM card
prior to departure or on arrival. In both cases
you simply get a new number and SIM card
to place in your existing handset while you’re
away from home.

GETTING MARRIED IN HAWAI‘I
The temperature fluctuates very little. Summer (May-Oct) has an average
daytime temperature at sea level of 29.4ºC while the equivalent in winter
(Nov-Apr) is 25.6ºC. Temperatures at night are approximately 12ºC lower.
November to March are the wettest months but the rain tends to be
localised with sunny spots usually found somewhere else on each island.
Long periods of rain are uncommon. During summer showers are less
frequent, often lasting only a few minutes.
Getting married in Hawai‘i is a beautiful way to start life together. To lawfully
marry in Hawai‘i, a licence must be obtained from an authorised agent.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and file an official application in
person with one of the many licensed agents across the Hawaiian Islands.
A fee of US$60 (plus US$5 processing charge) applies. Once the licence is
issued, there is no waiting period.

ROMANTIC CELEBRATIONS
Hawai‘i is one of the world’s most popular destinations for romantic
celebrations, whether it’s a couple’s holiday, wedding, honeymoon,
vow renewal or anniversary. Your local travel agent can help and many
Hawaiian hotels and resorts can assist, especially if you’re planning a
ceremony on-site. Professional wedding co-ordinators are also available
for hire in Hawai‘i. Download our ‘Hawai‘i Romance Guide’ by visiting

WATER SAFETY
SUN SAFETY
Hawai‘i’s ocean is beautiful, but it can also
be dangerous. Strong, hidden currents can
overpower even experienced swimmers and
standing on rocky outcrops can be dangerous
due to sudden, powerful rogue waves.
Conditions in the water constantly change.
Apply sunscreen often (year-round).
Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.
Remember:
• waves come in sets and conditions can
be calm for up to 20 minutes between
dangerous sets of waves
• swim only where lifeguards are on duty
• do not fight a rip current (keep calm, float, wave for help and go with the current to
conserve energy)
• use the buddy system – never swim alone and know your limits
• when in doubt, don’t go out
• nude bathing and nude sun-bathing is
prohibited across Hawai‘i.
SNORKELLING SAFETY
Check ocean conditions prior to snorkelling
in order to avoid high surf and strong currents.
GENERAL SAFETY TIPS
Be as security-conscious as you would be
at home. Don’t leave valuables unattended
or in plain sight in a hire car, on the beach,
or in restaurants or lobbies (lock them in the
hotel/room safe). Take only essential items
to the beach and put keys/valuables in a
waterproof bag and keep them with you.
Carry little cash and leave extra cash/credit
cards in the hotel safe. Make use of
travellers’ cheques, ATM facilities and/or
credit cards.

SAFETY TIP
HIKING SAFETY
Hawai‘i is the perfect destination for hiking but
some trails are for experienced hikers only.
Make sure you do your research (degree of
difficulty and length), let people know where
you’re going, carry a mobile phone and water,
and always hike with a partner. Visit http://
hawaii.gov/dlnr/brochures/HikingSafety.pdf
Hawai‘i does not have a sales tax. Instead a
General Excise Tax applies which varies by
county (island): Kaua‘i – 4 %; O‘ahu – 4.712 %;
Moloka‘i – 4.166%; Lāna‘i – 4.166 %; Maui –
4.166%; and Hawai‘i Island – 4.166%.
Please note that this tax is not included in the
advertised price of goods (it is added on at the
time of purchase).
PROTECING HAWAI‘I’S
NATURE RESERVES
HOTEL ROOM TAX
1. Brush/clean your boots before entering nature preserves to remove seeds and
eggs of invasive pests.
2. Never stray off a trail. Staying on paths helps to protect native plants. It’s also safer
because many trails have hidden cliffs.
3. Take your own water. Water from streams may look clear but may contain bacteria.
Learn more by visiting HawaiiStateParks.org
86 DISCOVER HAWAI‘I
In addition to the General Excise Tax,
all visitors are required to pay a Transient
Accommodations Tax of 9.25 percent for
their accommodation (hotels, resorts, B&Bs
and apartments). This means the total tax
on accommodation will be 15.96 percent.
