The main course is usually succulent roast pork cooked slowly in an imu pit and accompanied by fresh fruit, local seafood, salad and specialty dishes. Most lū‘aus also offer luscious tropical cocktails. Popular wedding party and guest gifts include: koa-wood frames, delicious Kona coffee, Aloha wear, Luahala (hats, wallets and purses woven from leaves of the hala tree), island jewellery, Hawaiian quilting (purses and pillow cases) and gift certificates for traditional Hawaiian lomilomi massage. Consider incorporating Hawaiian language into your ceremony or reception. For example: I give my love to you — Aloha Aku No May our love last forever — E Hoomau Maua Kealoha Thank you for celebrating with us — Mahalo nui loa na ho‘olaule‘a me la kaua. This page: Aubrey Hord Photography MUSIC TOP 8 SPIRIT OF ALOHA TOUCHES ENHANCE YOUR SPECIAL DAY — VISUALLY AND SPIRITUALLY — BY INCORPORATING DISTINCTIVE ELEMENTS OF THE HAWAIIAN CULTURE INTO YOUR CEREMONY AND RECEPTION. Music is an integral part of any Hawaiian celebration, and island-influenced jazz, traditional ‘ukelele, dance bands, slack-key guitar and traditional Hawaiian song add a joyous and distinctively Hawaiian element to your festive occasion. ‘The Hawaiian Wedding Song’, Ke Kali Nei Au, is a popular choice. Originally written in 1926, the song has been covered by several artists, most notably Elvis Presley in the movie ‘Blue Hawaii’. HULA As a dance form revered for hundreds of years and renowned as a vehicle for conveying passionate love stories, hula adds an authentically beautiful Hawaiian touch to any reception party. Hawaii Island Retreat (hawaiiislandretreat.com) DRESS In traditional Hawaiian weddings, both the bride and groom wear white. The groom is also allowed a touch of colour around the waist in the form of a coloured sash. E IV CEREMONY Love happens here au Kīl Fragrant garlands are an important part of Hawaiian wedding ritual. The green-leaved maile is the most traditional wedding lei, as it was used by the Hawaiian priests in Old Hawai‘i to bind the hands of the bride and groom, symbolising their commitment to each other. Brides generally wear a lei of strongly-scented pikake (white English jasmine), while grooms wear an open-ended lei made of spicyscented green maile stems and leaves. A significant symbol of love, the lei is given as part of the ceremony to each member of the bridal party and key family members. Strong, hidden currents can overpower even experienced swimmers and standing on rocky outcrops can be dangerous due to sudden, powerful rogue waves. Conditions in the water constantly change. Remember: • waves come in sets and conditions can be calm for up to 20 mins between dangerous sets of waves • swim only where lifeguards are on duty • do not fight a rip current (keep calm, float and wave for help, and go with the current to conserve energy) • use the buddy system – never swim alone and know your limits • when in doubt, don’t go out • nude bathing and nude sun-bathing is prohibited across Hawai‘i. Apply sunscreen often (year-round). Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Rental cars offer real value as they provide the freedom and flexibility to truly experience what each island has to offer. Remember to drive on the right-hand side of the road. You’ll find that most major roads are well maintained. Hawai‘i does not have a sales tax. Instead a General Excise Tax applies which varies by county (island): Kaua‘i – 4.166%; O‘ahu – 4.712%; Moloka‘i – 4.166%; Lāna‘i – 4.166%; Maui – 4.166%; and Hawai‘i Island – 4.166%. Please note that this tax is not included in the advertised price of goods (it is added on at the time of purchase). On O‘ahu use ‘TheBus’ (thebus.org) and Waikiki Trolley (waikikitrolley.com) — they’re easy, fun and affordable ways to see Waikīkī and Honolulu. • With little to no public transport on neighbouring islands, a hire car (or combination of hire car and tours) is recommended. • A ferry operates daily to/from Lāhainā (Maui) to Moloka‘i (90 minute trip) and Lāna‘i (60 minute trip). • Taxis are available at airports and key tourist spots. Credit cards are not commonly accepted and long taxi rides are costly. Taxis charge approximately US$45 for the 30-minute journey from Honolulu International Airport to Waikīkī. • In key tourist spots, shuttles operate between airports and hotels/resorts, and between resorts and nearby shopping precincts. Some are free of charge and others incur a small fee (check with your hotel/resort for details). • Helicopter tours are a great way to see the particularly scenic spots such as Waimea Canyon (Kaua‘i) and inaccessible areas such as the Nāpali Coast (Kaua‘i). • Passenger submarines are a novel, comfortable and safe way to explore the wonders of Hawai‘i’s tropical waters. • Motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles are available for hire. Please ‘drive with aloha’ (slowly and without the horn as it’s considered rude) and observe speed limits. Avoid tailgating and the local rule for single-lane bridges is to yield to on-coming traffic. However, if you’re the on-coming traffic and there is a line waiting on the other side, stop and let your neighbours cross. ETIQUETTE TIPS Respect property marked with kapu (‘off limits’). Remember to mālama kai (respect plants and animals). Make sure to mālama ‘aīna (respect the land) by staying on trails and not disturbing plants. Remove shoes when entering private homes and selected B&Bs. Properly dispose of opala (rubbish). Observe smoke-free laws which prohibit smoking in enclosed public areas. TIPPING GUIDELINES Restaurants – 15-20% Note that a service charge may be automatically added to a bill, especially for party sizes of six or more. Check your bill, before tipping, to see if a service charge had already been included. Cruising – A small gratuity is generally built into the cost of your cruise (this is generally split between various service departments onboard such as housekeeping and food/ beverage). At your discretion, you may still like to leave a tip for extra special service received from housekeepers, waiters, bar staff and others. WEATHER The temperature fluctuates very little. Make sure you do your research (degree of difficulty and length), let people know where you’re going, carry a mobile phone and water, and hike with a partner. Visit hawaii.gov/dlnr/ brochures/HikingSafety.pdf PROTECING HAWAI‘I’S NATURE RESERVES 1. Brush/clean your boots before entering nature preserves to remove seeds and eggs of invasive pests. 2. Never stray off a trail. Staying on paths helps to protect native plants. It’s also safer because many trails have hidden cliffs. 3. Take your own water. Water from streams may look clear but may contain bacteria.
