Each Labor Day, it is our privilege to welcome golfers, tennis
players, sponsors, and friends to the Otesaga Hotel Seniors
Open & Pro-Am and the Chobani Tennis Classic, which support scholarships at Pathfinder Village in Edmeston, New York,
a remarkable open-access residential community for people who
have Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. The
Village, founded in 1980, is a vibrant place where people from all
walks of life learn, work and play, creating lives of meaning and
independence.
Our key sponsors have been steadfast partners and have insured the success of these events. We are honored to have the
steadfast support of our Seniors Open Title Sponsor, The Otesaga Hotel, and our Presenting Sponsor, NBT Bank. Chobani,
which has won world-wide acclaim and revitalized New York's
dairy industry, is Title Sponsor for our tennis tourney. We also
extend our deep gratitude to our other major golf sponsors:
Corporate Sponsor Coca-Cola Refreshments, and Platinum
Sponsors NYCM Insurance and the Nicolais Family. Our friends
at Strategic Financial Services and Manning & Napier are our
Trophy Level Sponsors for the tennis tournament.
We would be remiss if we did not extend our gratitude to all
tournament sponsors, especially those who have been with us
from the beginning. Together, with their steady support, the
tournaments have helped raise over $2.5 million for Pathfinder,
and have created a tradition that is unmatched anywhere.
On behalf of the Tournament Committees and everyone at
Pathfinder Village, we thank you for your support.
Sincerely,

The Skipper takes the helm at the 2014 Pro-Am
The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is celebrating its 75th anniversary in grand
style in 2014. In July, it inducted six stand-outs,
including three of the winningest managers in
history. With the induction of Bobby Cox, Tony
LaRussa and Joe Torre, the Class of 2014 demonstrates that team excellence is inextricably
tied to superb strategists who can read the field,
manage talent, and inspire greatness in others.
Bobby Cox will return to Cooperstown this
September 2 to serve as the Hall of Fame Ambassador for the Pro-Am round of the 32nd annual Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open. This event
at the Leatherstocking Golf Course raises over
$50,000 annually to benefit the Pathfinder Village Scholarship Endowment, and is held concurrently with the Chobani Tennis Classic, now
in its fifth year. Both events have raised over
$2.5 million to benefit Pathfinder Village, a remarkable open-access community for people
living with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities.

at the Hall of Fame.
The Hall has just announced a
touring exhibit to debut in 2016 with
IMAX Films and MLB Advanced Media as an
extension of the 75th anniversary celebration.
As the Pro Am's celebrity host, Cox follows
in the footsteps of Hall of Famers such as Rollie Fingers, Ferguson Jenkins, Johnny Bench,
Mike Schmidt, Carlton Fisk, and Phil Niekro. The
Skipper will visit Pathfinder's residents on Labor Day to learn about the community's innovative programs in education, vocational training, and aging. A highlight will be a Q&A session
with Cox at Tuesday's Awards Banquet, moderated by Brad Horn, the Hall's Vice President of
Communications and Education.

"Bobby Cox started his career in the late '60s
in New York, but his journey followed an unexpected path through injuries," said Pathfinder
CEO Paul C. Landers. "Everyone can find parallels in his story about rebuilding from scratch,
finding opportunities, and admire the passion
he showed as a manager."
Cox managed the Atlanta and Toronto clubs
for 29 seasons, leading them to 15 first-place
finishes. He led the Braves to 14 straight seasons where they finished in playoff position
(1991-2005). They won five National League
pennants and the 1995 World Series under Cox,
who finished his career with 2,504 victories. He
won the BBWAA’s Manager of the Year Award
four times, and is only the fourth manager to
win more than 2,000 games with one team.
The Seniors Open
After the benefit events on Tuesday, the Leatherstocking Golf Course will host the Otesaga
Hotel Seniors Open on September 3-5, a threeday contest that attracts senior golf pros from
throughout the country. Over 90 club and teaching pros are expected to compete.
The Seniors Open offers a total purse of up to
$100,000 in age-based flights, and is chaired by
Daryl Forsythe of NBT Bank and Dan Spooner,
host professional at Leatherstocking. It boasts
an enviable past player list that includes former
PGA-ranked pros Jim Albus, Tom Nieporte, and

The Pro-Am will field 24 teams of four amateurs and a senior pro. In 2013, Cooperstown
native Pro Scott Spence led the team of Andrew Vilacky, Jim Potts, Jim Bugonian and Peter
Severud for the win.
The Chobani Tennis Classic, which is planned
by the Pathfinder Village Foundation and a volunteer committee headed by Bob and Pat Hanft,
is a double-flight round robin doubles tournament that offers up to 32 participants challenging play and the chance to enjoy the beautiful
lakeside courts of the Cooperstown Country
Club. Last year's winners included Lionel Ventura of Montreal and Timothy Handy, Norwich
(Flight A), and Louis Allstadt, Cooperstown, and
Robert Holstead, Oneonta (Flight B).
The tournament has grown each year and in
2014 gained two new Trophy Sponsors,
Manning & Napier and Strategic Financial

A Season in the Sun: A Village Update
Pathfinder Village is always
busy, but this summer it has been
abuzz with new events, outreach
initiatives, and the growth of new
programs that will have a tremendous impact in years to come.
"On the surface, Pathfinder is
this serene, idyllic community
that is so easy to fall in love with,"
notes Chief Executive Officer
Paul Landers. "But it's not until
you are immersed in Village life
that you see the energy that is
here. Not since the initial phases
of creating the Village have we
had as many new programs, new
ideas, and as much growth. All of
this makes Pathfinder relevant
and vibrant."
In mid-May, Pathfinder's Kennedy Willis Center and the National Down Syndrome Society
co-hosted the 2014 Symposium
on Aging, Dementia & Intellectual Disabilities, a landmark
gathering of over 120 human service agency representatives, family members, and direct care staff.
Four speakers from key research

and support organizations – Matthew Janicki PhD, Seth Keller
MD, Kathleen Bishop PhD, and
Wayne Silverman PhD – shared
the latest aging research and news
from the National Task Group on
Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia. The NTG, a committee of
the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry, is charged with addressing the
needs of individuals living with
dementia and intellectual/devel-
opmental disabilities (I/DD), to
ensure that adequate support services are considered in new federal policies under the National
Alzheimer's Project Act.
The Aging Symposium and
other national meetings have fostered the development of a direct
care training curriculum that will
be introduced at several pilot sites
throughout the U.S. this fall. Pathfinder Village is one of these sites:
The training will prepare staff to
Speakers Janicki, Bishop, Keller, and Silverman shared updates on the NTG's latest research and progress in the areas of
aging, dementia and intellectual disabilities at the 2014 Symposium at Pathfinder Village this past May.

identify changes related to normal aging and those associated
with dementia. It will also outline
strategies to enable staff to better
support persons living with dementia and I/DD. Similar collaborations with other research and
policy organizations are another
path for growth in the years
ahead.
Continuing its commitment to
older individuals, the Village reopened Chenango House, its
home for older residents, following a $200,000 renovation. In
June, Lance Bendann of Baltimore spoke at the Village's Family Weekend on his relationship
with Pathfinder, and how his family came to support building the
home's new activity room, Anne's
Room, as a tribute to his wife,
Anne Duffy Bendann.
"One of Anne's inspirations was
Sister Joan Chittister, who wrote,
'Our role in life is to bring the
light of our own souls to the dim
places around us.' This is how
Anne tried to live her life, and,
while Pathfinder is anything but a
dim place, Anne found here a
community that brings light, re-
spect and meaning to many lives.
In that role, Anne found an organization with a mission much like
hers. It is truly fitting … that a
part of Anne and what she believed will remain here at Chenango House in an Activities Room
that will serve the artistic abilities
of the residents, Anne's friends,
and we thank you for that honor."
On the health front
For two years, Pathfinder has
been part of a growing regional
initiative, the 5210 Program
through Bassett Healthcare Network's Research Institute, to improve community health through
better nutrition and healthy living. The Village's successful
weekly Pathfinder Produce vege-

table and fruit market continues
to serve an important local need,
especially for seniors. That effort
has been enhanced by a new 5210
Hoop House (see cover photo),
which was built this year with
support from the 5210 Program,
the Hulbert Foundation, and the
Riley J. & Lillian N. Warren and
Beatrice W. Blanding Foundation.
"Along with providing commercial produce, our goal is to have
Pathfinder students grow and sell
local crops," said Dan Osborn, Sr.
Director of Quality Support Services. "Using the Button Greenhouse and the Hoop House, we're
able to offer a variety of products,
and are also able to serve our educational and vocational goals."
Another focus of the 5210 is
promoting fitness; Pathfinder created a new event this May, the
Splash Path 5K & Fun Walk, to
bolster community fitness and
family fun. The
e v e n t ,
which was
routed
through the
Village, drew
540 participants and 50 local sponsors.
The event raised funds for another 5210 project, a new Community Walking Trail that will be
built at Pathfinder this fall.
"Splash Path helped raise funds
for the walking trail," said Mr.
Landers. "But the really important
outcome was the way it introduced many families to the joy,
beauty and potential that is so
much a part of everyday life here.
It won us new friends and support, shared ideas about growth
and connections; that is what
'community' is all about."
14
A Vital Community Need
The Pathfinder Village Board plans to build a new $1.2 million
community healthcare center in Edmeston to honor the life’s
work of William F. Streck, MD. Until July, Dr. Streck served as the
CEO of the Bassett Healthcare Network, Cooperstown, and has
been chair of the Pathfinder Village Board since 1995.
The new Dr. William F. Streck Community Health Clinic will be
next to Grant's Field at Pathfinder, and will accommodate two key
care providers and staff. Fund-raising by the Pathfinder Village
Foundation is ongoing; construction may start by late 2014.
"The larger clinic will better meet the needs of Village residents, but also will help local families seeking care. It will improve healthcare access for employees, and support employers
at businesses big-and-small in our region," said Village CEO Paul
Landers. “It is fitting to honor Dr. Streck’s 30 years of leadership
in creating a modern healthcare regional network by naming our
new clinic after him."
“Dr. Streck’s work is highly regarded throughout New York, and
the strategies he devised for healthcare delivery are being integrated into national policies,” said Mr. Landers. “His service and
vision at Pathfinder have also blazed a trail for better care and
outcomes for individuals living with disabilities.”
“The Edmeston clinic was the first community facility that Bassett developed back in 1973, and its success was a springboard
for all subsequent clinics,” said Edmeston native William Cole,
chair of the Pathfinder Village Foundation. “Since then, there’s
been a growing need for practitioners in rural areas, an aging demographic, and greater demands for health services. Simply put,
a larger, modern facility at Pathfinder will exponentially improve
the quality of care. The new clinic will touch the lives of every
family in the northern Unadilla Valley and encourage growth.”
The new clinic will be operated by Bassett, and will replace the
current clinic, also located at Pathfinder. To learn more, please

Three Otsego County residents

When the big day arrived, about 12,000 fans, reporters from around the country, and three radio
broadcasters were in place at noon on Main
Street in front of the newly opened Hall of
Fame, where the 25 electees from the
first induction classes (1936-39) were
to be honored with bronze plaques.
“It was quite something that here in
Cooperstown we could see some of
the heroes of baseball and were able to
say ‘hi’ to them,” said Osterhoudt, who
as a 21-year-old documented the day’s
activities with 50 photographs that are
now part of the Museum’s collection. “It
was quite a day.”
The living Hall of Fame members who attended,
including Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Babe Ruth,
Honus Wagner, Nap Lajoie, Connie Mack, Tris
Speaker, Cy Young, Grover Cleveland Alexander,
Eddie Collins and George Sisler, were considered a
'Who’s Who' of the game’s luminaries from the previous half-century.
“I think the biggest thing that I remember was that
Ty Cobb was late getting there and had to climb up
over the railing of the stage at the Induction
Ceremony,” said Talbot.
For Walker, one particular player left a
distinct impression.
“I was watching Babe Ruth walk up
Main Street heading for the barber
shop,” she said. “My eyes were as wide
as saucers. The kids just gravitated to
Babe Ruth – he just attracted kids. He
went to the barbershop and had a shave.
I remember my dad laughing because
every time the barber would see anybody
he’d remind them he had shaved Babe Ruth.
“I do remember that my brother had this old
Brownie camera," she continued. "He was mad
because he had to carry Ruth’s suitcase so he didn’t
get any photos.”
Talbot, Walker and Osterhoudt, members of a
small group known as “the 39ers,” to this day are still
amazed when recalling what they witnessed.

who, beginning in 1951,
