My wife and I were spectators in Spartanburg. We have been attending this championship for about seven or eight years and have really enjoyed seeing this level of talent evolve. The routines we won with in the early 1980’s (Orange Blossom Special Cloggers of Florida) would barely place by today’s standards. A heart attack thirteen year’s ago put a hurtin’ on my aerobic ability but I did get back to a point to where I could get through solos. I entered a couple of times and even took some flatfooting classes from Lou Maiuri and enjoyed that. I actually placed first in the thirty and older category at the ACHF championships in Maggie Valley several years ago. me as a young dancer and instructor who was just thrilled to be on the dancefloor that I would someday be acknowledged in this way, I would not have believed it. The award is not just mine. It belongs to my family who got me into square dancing as a young man, to my grandmother who was my biggest fan and cheerleader, to the cloggers, teachers and competitors who inspired me, who taught me so much about dance and about life, and to the countless folks along the way whose smiles and kindness and friendships have made it all worthwhile. It is true that today’s competitions are not like the ones that we remember from the 1970’s and 1980’s, when clogging caught fire and spread around the world. Weren’t we so lucky to be there for those amazing years of growth and change for this dance we love. Part of me wishes we could capture the magic With some back surgery and tendon surgery this year, plus tending to a business, clogging has not of the time and share it with today’s cloggers. Technology has made our world so small that been the priority that it used to be. there really isn’t much that can be brought to the It’s foolish really that I don’t make more time for “scene” that hasn’t been “seen.” clogging because it is the only activity in my life I do hope that you do consider dusting off that I’ve been good at and my wonderful wife was one of my students. Also honored at the World Championships are individuals who are inducted into America’s Clogging Hall of Fame. These inductees have been clogging for at least 25 years and have been a positive influence in the preservation of the dance. This year, three inductions were added to the illustrious list of those who have been previously honored throughout the years. The first inductee into America’s Clogging Hall of Fame for 2014 was Robert Dotson and his late wife, Myrtle. The couple, from the Sugar Grove community of the Carolinas, grew up dancing, where their families would have apple peelings followed by pushing away the furniture in the living room to dance the night away. Having grown up as children only a mile or two from one another, they attended the same square 12 www.doubletoe.com dances and were influenced by the same dance styles. Dancing to the music of an unamplified string band in the close quarters of a living room, they developed a quiet flatfoot style, devoid of the metal taps that are common among most clogging groups. The Dotsons were a major influence on the Green Grass Cloggers and Fiddle Puppets, groups formed in the 1970’s. The “walking “ step was the most popular step that they learned from the Dotsons, a low to the floor typified by a flatfooting scuffing of the heel forward followed with a drag on the opposite foot and then brushing the ball of the forward foot down and stepping on it. The continuous motion creates a very fluid and beautiful motion that is rhythmic and understated. The Dotsons have been master artists in residence during dance week at the famed Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, West Virginia, driving from their home in Elizabethton, Tennessee to lead square dances and demonstrate their flatfoot styles. “I just love to dance,” Robert Dotson said. “When I hear music, I get the rhythm. I’ve got to get up.” Even though his wife has passed, 91 year old Robert still loves the opportunity to show his flatfooting style. The Doubletoe Times Magazine of Clogging Jeff Driggs was also inducted into the Hall of Fame. Driggs grew up in West Virginia, the third of six sons born to Phil and Nancy Driggs. The Driggs’ were regulars at the many square dances held around the region. Jeff began calling square dances as a teenager in the early 70’s, where he had the opportunity to learn from many of Appalachia’s best western-style and old time square dance callers. He began clogging in 1980 while in college, when he and his Western square dance partner began weekend visits to the many clogging and old time music halls in Southern West Virginia. A self taught dancer, he learned from watching old time masters like the late D. Ray White, and modern cloggers like Tony Burgess and Jamie Bullins. The West Virginia style he developed early on was a combination of flatfooting (a low to the floor dance style punctuated by heel skuffs and pitter patter on the ball of the foot) and Appalachian style clogging which is recognized by its constant drag-slide motion on the flat of the foot with the heel keeping time. Driggs was offered the opportunity to dance with a local team and learned the terminology and techniques of precision clogging. The team performed locally and on the road with the Hee Haw Road show, performing at local venues with the likes of Grandpa Jones and Minnie Pearl. At an openmic teaching session at Fontana, North Carolina in 1983, Jeff and his friend from North Carolina, Jamie Bullins, shared some steps they had created and he caught the eye of workshop organizers Bobbie and Dewey Paul of Ohio, who offered him a staff teaching spot the following year. He spent the next year performing, dancing and choreographing in preparation for his first workshop. Driggs’ skill as a cuer and his humorous presentation style struck a chord with the dancers, and offers for more workshops began to come in. In 2009, workshops in North and South Dakota gave him the distinction of having taught in all fifty U.S. states. He has also shared clogging throughout Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia and has received numerous awards and honors, both as a competitor and an instructor. As a performer, Jeff made his first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry in 1985, after winning the U.S. male clogging title. He has danced on that hallowed stage many times throughout the years, and in shows with country music artists such as Vince Gill, (Continued on page 14) The Doubletoe Times Magazine of Clogging www.doubletoe.com 13 America’s Clogging Hall of Fame (Continued from page 12) Kenny Rogers, Charlie Daniels, Ricky Skaggs and others. His routines are taught and danced worldwide, and his choreography has been performed in international parades and festivals, bowl game halftime shows, theme parks and more. Jeff has written several books on clogging and old time square dancing and has recently written a stage musical on the history of clogging that is being developed for production. He has also been working to include clogging in upcoming stage and screen projects. Jeff has served as an officer in many national clogging organizations, and in 1998 became the owner and editor of the Double Toe Times clogging magazine that is read throughout the United States and 14 foreign countries. North Carolina. By the end of the 1970s, clogging groups inspired by the Green Grass Cloggers had formed in many places across the country. Overseas, the Green Grass Clogger-style was adopted by groups in Japan and in England, where today it is the predominant style of 'Appalachian' clogging. Presently, out of 170 members throughout the group’s history, the current roster includes more than 40 active dancers who have joined together throughout each of the team’s four decades. Rounding out the Hall of Fame induction ceremony was the inclusion of the Green Grass Cloggers. The Green Grass Cloggers were founded in 1971 by students at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. Founder Dudley Culp had first seen clogging at the Old Time Fiddlers Convention in Union Grove, North Carolina. Inspired by seeing traditional mountain-style clogging teams, but more influenced by older flatfoot and buck dancers met at fiddlers' conventions, they developed an original, eclectic style which was a radical departure from the traditions of North Carolina team clogging of the time. In contrast to the 'big-set' mountain square dance figures of the traditional freestyle clogging teams, the Green Grass Cloggers used choreography based on four-couple Western square dance figures, in short energetic routines, consciously designed for audience appeal. While the group's footwork was synchronized, as in precision clogging, their freespirited performances included head-high kicks and other unconventional steps. Dressed in old-time calico dresses, blue jeans, and black shoes, their appearance contrasted with the clean-cut look of polyester and white tap shoes common to most other groups in the 1970s. By 1974, the group had an established reputation and was invited to perform at major folk festivals throughout the United States and Canada. From 1977 until 1987, "The Road Team," which relocated to Asheville in 1980, toured full-time nationally and internationally as a professional dance company, while "The "Home Team" remained active in eastern 14 www.doubletoe.com (Continued on page 16) The Doubletoe Times Magazine of Clogging America’s Clogging Hall of Fame Inductees by year 2014 Jeff Driggs Green Grass Cloggers Robert Dotson 2013 2010 Debbie Conn Jay Ledford Steve Tallent 2009 William Derry Eddie Oliver Carol Wiggins 2008 2004 Nancy Aycock 2003 Burton Edwards Barbara Kohler Lib Mills 1997 Shirley Finger Jack Knighten Ralph & Melvin Sloan 1996 Ellen Ratcliffe Eugene Ratcliffe 2012 Paul Cagle Terri Johnson 2001 2007 Bob Crawley 1988 2002 Myrtle Johnson Peg & Bill McLerran Paul Vaught,Jr. Mercy Martinez Donna Riley Mountain Dance Folk Festival Mr. Cleo McCall Eddie Carruthers Robert Maupin Hope Outlaw Anna Wells 1989 Jimmy Loveless Faye Warren 2000 Audrey & Ellis Perry Evelyn Smith 1999 1995 Sandy Angel Ralph Pierce Garland Steele 1994 Earline Byers Lois Robinson Duncan Lillian Smith Kyle Edwards Bob Johnson 1987 Dan Angel Red Ivester Bob Phillips 1986 George Arthur Earl Powell 1993 J. ACHF also selects 16 dancers to the Junior All-American Team and 4 dancers to the Senior All-American Team each year. These dancers are showcased at the World Championships. Henry Jones, treasurer on the board of the American Clogging Hall of Fame spoke to the local media. “Clogging is a melting pot of different folk dances,” Jones said. “Clogging is truly an American dance.” “It’s such a fun time and a great way to be involved in a little part of American history.” Photos: ACHF All-America Team inductee, Dancers of all ages took home honors in the dance-off held at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. 16 www.doubletoe.com The Doubletoe Times Magazine of Clogging ON CUE Having A Tropical Christmas Artist: Bellamy Brothers Time: 3:27 Level: EZ Inter.
