Drake Elkin, Kari Kesley, Ethan Stewart and Russell Eldridge call the group “The Metronomes” a name they chose to pay homage to the rhythmic percussive style that defines the steps they create. The foursome developed a FaceBook page in the group’s name and on December 28 posted their first video teach in a series they hope to continue weekly. This first step has been viewed more than 20,000 times as of this printing and the group is now up to step number four in their series, with each member taking the lead to teach a step. None of these dancers are strangers to the dancefloor. Elkin, an Indiana native, has been performing at the theatre for several years and was a solo champion as well as a team dancer with the award winning Clogging Sensation of Missouri, and appeared at this year’s Macy’s Day Parade and on America’s Got Talent with ALL THAT. Kesley is new to the show, but a veteran clogger who has performed around the world as a member of the Southern Belles. She also has appeared on America’s Got Talent and is the granddaughter of legendary Georgia clogging instructor and choreographer Tandy Barrett. Tennessee clogger Ethan Stewart just returned to Pigeon Forge from a stint performing with ALL THAT in Myrtle 4 www.doubletoe.com Beach, South Carolina and also joined the group in the Macy’s Parade Performance in New York City. Stewart is a champion solo and team dancer whose country charm and fast feet serve him well in the fast paced show. Eldridge, also from Indiana, is the youngest member of the Metronomes, but has been clogging most of his life. He also has performed with ALL THAT and this past year toured the West Coast with Brian Bon’s Powerhouse Percussive Dance Group. Elkin said the group of friends came up with the idea of the group as a way to give back to the clogging community for the support it has shown them in their endeavors and to push themselves creatively through sharing steps and techniques. “We are all very appreciative of the support from the clogging community for these step videos,” Elkin said. “We are excited to showcase the skills, techniques, and influences we have learned and received over the years. We love to challenge ourselves and others so that clogging can continue to evolve!” Photos: Top: The Metronomes Facebook Page. The percussive dance form of African American stepping met up with the Appalachian percussive dance form of clogging at a performance at West Virginia State University in Institute, West Virginia. Columbus, Ohio based cloggers the Yellow Rose Cloggers drove in to the mountain state to participate in the show on the college campus, collaborating with a local clogger to end the Step Afrika program with a series of clogging numbers that showcased the different styles that are a part of clogging’s history, according to the clogging group’s director Adam King. Step Afrika! is the first professional company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping. The group promotes an appreciation for the art of stepping and its use as an educational, motivational and healthy tool for young people. They accomplish this mission through arts education activities, international cultural exchange programs and performances world-wide. Step Afrika! was founded in 1994 by Brian Williams, a graduate of Howard University. Williams became familiar with stepping through his lengthy practices with the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity when practicing extensively for homecomings. During travels back 8 www.doubletoe.com and forth to collaborate with the Africa Soweto Dance Theatre of Johannesburg, South Africa, Williams noticed a strikingly comparable relationship between the dances in Africa and stepping. Over the past 20 years Step Afrika! has grown to become one of the top 10 African American Dance Companies in the United States, based upon Dance USA’s survey of African American dance companies by budget size. Since its beginning, the group has expanded to become a national and international touring company presenting performance, residencies and workshops worldwide. “Step Afrika! gets people moving – towards college, towards a greater appreciation for the arts and towards a better understanding of each other,” said Williams. The show was a victory for clogger Adam King and his Yellow Rose Cloggers of Ohio. King moved to Ohio from Texas and has been clogging since the 1980’s. King started clogging at the age of fourteen. Before taking up the art, he was insistent that only girls danced. “But that was before I saw my neighbors’ clogging team, the Clogghoppers of Friendswood, Texas, do a routine to “Jump” by the Pointer Sisters,” King said. “It was the hot song that year, and I said to myself, if they’re going to dance to cool stuff like that, I might try it.” King’s brother, Josh King, had joined a year earlier. The name Josh King may be familiar to many cloggers. He is an internationally recognized instructor who now lives and teaches in Australia, (Continued on page 12) Photos: Yellow Rose Cloggers of Ohio director Adam King has fun with a dance move during the Fontana Clogging Jamboree in North Carolina. 10 www.doubletoe.com WHAT IS STEPPING? Stepping is a rising art form and an important part of America’s artistic and cultural heritage. In stepping, the body is used as an instrument to create intricate rhythms and sounds through a combination of footsteps, claps and the spoken word. ORIGIN OF STEPPING Stepping is based on a long and rich tradition in African-based communities that use movement, words and sounds to communicate allegiance to a group. It draws movements from African foot dances, such as Gumboot, originally conceived by miners in South Africa as an alternative to drumming, which was banned by authorities. The stepping tradition in the United States grew out of song and dance rituals practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities, beginning in the early 1900s. STEPPING TODAY In addition to step shows and competitions on college campuses, today stepping can also be found in schools, churches and community organizations around the country. The form is also spreading its wings to new venues and participants, such as Latino and Asian American Greekletter organizations. Stepping has been highlighted in motion pictures such as Stomp The Yard, School Daze, Mac and Me, Drumline, and How She Move. King was too embarrassed to go to classes at first. He described himself as a severe introvert. So, instead he learned to clog in his neighbors’ kitchen. Rita Hodge taught him the basic step, and he quickly had found his calling. Two years after learning the basics, King was dancing with Charlene Burton and the Yellow Rose Cloggers of the Houston, Texas area, a group some of the Clogghoppers had formed so they could do some of the more modern clogging while retaining the heritage. It was King’s second family, and he learned how to choreograph and was given the room to grow and excel through performances, workshops and competitions. King and his fellow dancers had the experiences of dancing for U.S. presidents and clogging as ambassadors in Japan. “Workshops were so critical to my growth as well,” King said. “It was there I mimicked some of the top instructors’ dance style — Scotty Bilz, Judy Waymouth, Jeff Driggs, Jay Ledford, Missy Shinoski, Matt and Colleen Pearson — in order to King relocated to Ohio in 2004 to get married, after meeting his wife Naomi. She was a tapper who he had taught to clog through their longdistance romance, but King longed for a team of dancers, too. It took him three years to finally get a group together that was committed to the new program, and he asked the Yellow Rose Cloggers in Texas if they would let him use the name for his new team, to honor the group that had been so special in his life. They agreed, and the Yellow Rose Cloggers of Ohio were born. “Now six years in as a team, we have more than 60 dancers and, I admit, I want more,” King said. “In two more years I would like 100 cloggers filling the three studios where we rent space. I want the dancers we have to strive to that next level, to be ambassadors for the sport and share what they know with future generations.” King was anxious to give his Yellow Rose dancers some similar experiences to what he had (Continued on page 14) The Yellow Rose Cloggers of Ohio pose on stage with Jeff Driggs, who worked with West Virginia State University to include cloggers in the percussive dance evening. 12 www.doubletoe.com The Doubletoe Times Magazine of Clogging September 5 - 14, 2014 With Jeff Driggs, Shane Gruber, Lee Froehle & More In honor of the Renegade Quicksteppers’ 25th Anniversary Celebration Including Performances in Germany & Austria Custom tours and performance and workshop opportunities (8 nights / 10 days) www.cloggingexpo.com The Doubletoe Times Magazine of Clogging www.doubletoe.com 13 Stepping Out with Clogging (Continued from page 12) experienced with their namesake team in Texas. The Step Afrika show in West Virginia was an opportunity for his dancers to perform for a new audience and to see another percussive dance form live. King hopes to do more shows of this type and to take the group on a performance trip either in the U.S. or abroad (they’re considering Spain!). “What I really love about our team is the variety we have in terms of ages and abilities and finding the best routines to match their skills,” King said. “We take all comers: People with no dance background, folks converting from other dance forms and cloggers who have been dancing for years and years.” offer to join them. She had to learn everything via YouTube and the group put it all together about two hours before the show. “She was such a workhorse and blended with us very well,” King said. “Originally we had hoped to showcase some clogging within Step Afrika’s show and then do a dance collaboration with them, showing how the rhythms between the two dances meshed,” King said. “But because they had added so many new dancers, the creative director at Step (Continued on page 16) Having such a broad range of talent actually prepares the group for any opportunities that might come along. For the Step Afrika show, King chose his most advanced dancers to help put clogging on display. “This was going to be a unique show for us because we were pairing with Erin McGhee of West Virginia, who we danced next to at workshops but never danced with in a performance,” King said. The group that appeared in the Step Afrika show ranged in age from 19 to 65, and included King, as well as Jennifer Wisenbarger, Jesse Howard, Erin Schwarz, Naomi Zweben, Linda Glenn, Megan Hoffer and Cindy Jacober. The show was a lesson in being prepared for anything. Richard Wolfe, the cultural events program coordinator at West Virginia State University, where the performance would be held, had reached out to Jeff Driggs to see about adding clogging to the Step Afrika show, which was a fundraiser and awareness event for organ donation. Jeff than reached out to Yellow Rose and some former members of the West Virginia Kickers to see if they would be interested in collaborating. Stepping Out with Clogging love to have a true collaboration with them.” (Continued from page 14) The show showcased the percussive similarities of stepping and clogging, as well as the distinctions of each dance form. “Stepping is very syncopated and plays to the downbeat of the music, very much like clogging,” King said. “I’ve always considered clogging a power dance because we’re heavy on our heels, and stepping is all about power and rhythm, so the two genres are very complementary in that sense.” Afrika thought we should keep the performances separate. We thought we were going to open the show, but instead they decided we should end it.” King wanted to give the audience, especially those who had never seen clogging before, a progression of style. The group started with some drag-slide clogging, using a portion of a national championship traditional line dance from Rhythm N Motion from Tennessee. “We knew step dancing, in its purest form, uses the body to create rhythm, so we transitioned into a capella, putting all the focus on our sound,” King said. “We changed speeds and tempos, had progressive steps and really put the spotlight on what clogging does best: Providing aural entertainment.” The group closed the show with a routine to Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal.” “The sound of an audience of 500 plus people cheering and applauding is something I’ll never forget,” King said. “The moment we finished, the theater exploded, and it was gratifying to know that we left everything on the floor and it was hugely appreciated.” The Yellow Rose Cloggers from Ohio watched the Step Afrika before they went on, and seeing their energy and connection to the audience was very inspiring to the group. The Step Afrika dancers took the cloggers place in the audience during their finale, and the clogger’s numbers had some moves that resembled some stepping claps. “Step Afrika jumped out of their seats when we did that,” King said. “It’s always hardest to impress other dancers, especially professional dancers, but every member of Step Afrika took the time to come congratulate us and tell us how much they enjoyed it. I hope they come to Columbus, Ohio, in the near future — we would 16 www.doubletoe.com Coordinators of the event were very pleased with the reception the cloggers received, and now plan to explore other opportunities to mix cultural dance forms in the future. “I honestly wasn’t sure how the audience was going to respond to clogging and our amateur group after seeing Step Afrika’s professional, flawless, high-energy show,” King said. “But dance, any type of dance, when performed with enthusiasm and a true love of your craft can inspire. I would love to have another opportunity to explore cross-cultural opportunities. I think clogging can be paired with so many forms of dance, so the possibilities are endless. And, of course, I’m proud that our performance and clogging were the impetus to create interest in doing something like this again.” The opportunity to perform with other dance forms is something that King and his cloggers encourage others to do, and King offered advice for other performing groups. “Yellow Rose works best when dancers are given the freedom to influence the direction of the team,” King said. “Whether they’re outspoken or not, the dancers will let you know what they like and what they don’t and what works for them and what doesn’t. That doesn’t mean the dancers shouldn’t be pushed out of their comfort zones now and then, and this performance certainly did that. We treat our folks like a second family and try to ensure our dancers have as positive an experience as possible. In return, we ask the dancers to check their egos at the door because we’re all there to have a good time. It doesn’t always work perfectly, but our team continues to grow, so we must be doing something right. I couldn’t imagine a life without my team.” The Doubletoe Times Magazine of Clogging WORLD OF CLOGGING #worldofclogging #bestweekendever #cloglife Memorial Day Weekend May 23-25, 2014 TWO GREAT EVENTS! Deborah Warnick, of the Williamson County Convention and Visitors Bureau, called Deal — who was known by friends and strangers as “Uncle Lester” — the original tourism ambassador for Leiper’s Fork. “I feel like I’ve always known Lester,” Warnick said. “He’s always been a part of Leiper’s Fork. He was at every dance. He was always there.” Businessman and musician Aubrey Preston said he spotted Deal, then a hardware clerk at Crosslin Lumber, dancing nonstop at a blues festival in Leiper’s Fork. “He’s really been everybody’s Uncle Lester,” Preston said. It is Preston who commissioned Deal’s now-famous silver shoes from celebrity designer Manuel. Uncle Lester ended up traveling with Preston’s Homer Dever Band as a dancer, along with friend and life-long neighbor Goose Davis. Davis said he had to reinforce a table at Green’s Grocery, a venue owned by Preston where the Homer Dever Band frequently performed. “He’d get up on the table in the middle of the show and dance,” Davis said. Deal danced at a 2003 event hosted by Preston at which Gov. Phil Bredesen and Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn were the guests of honor. In 2010 he danced for a business delegation from China considering business ties with Tennessee. “It didn’t matter who you were, Lester 18 www.doubletoe.com would dance with anybody,” Davis said.
