Publication Statement Adult Education Thumin Bet Midrash An adult learning collaborative sponsored by Congregation Beth Ahm and B’nai Israel Synagogue Mondays, October 12, 19, 26 & November 2, 9 16, 23, 30 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. Tuition: $50 All classes meet at Congregation Beth Ahm, 5075 West Maple Road in West Bloomfield Choose one of the following courses: Jewish Family Life Through the Ages Instructor: Dr. Mitch Parker The primary goal of this seven week course is to use primary texts to look at the continuities and discontinuities of Jewish family life from Biblical times to the present. We will investigate the roles and expectations of grandparents, parents, sons and daughters in the maintenance of the family and analyze how cultural, political and religious changes and stresses may have precipitated change over the course of time. We will listen to the words and insights of our ancestors as we try to understand what advice they can offer the members of the Jewish family today. Dr. Mitch Parker is a child clinical psychologist with an office in Bloomfield Hills. He has devoted his professional career to work with the families of children with developmental and learning challenges. He is also a veteran community educator. In June he completed a study of the Torah entitled “Torah Line by Line” with a group of students who met weekly for 10 years beginning with Genesis 1:1 and ending with the last verse in Deuteronomy. Chieftains, Warlords, and Terrorists: Beyond ‘Judges’ Instructor: Rabbi Stephen Belsky The Biblical book of Shoftim (“Judges”) describes a time of turbulence in Ancient Israel, between the Conquest by Joshua and the rise of the Monarchy with King Saul and King David. Each tribe saw to its own affairs, sought its own goals, and committed its own sins. Add to this mix spiritual turmoil and an almost constant threat of war from nearby nations, and the time was ripe for the appearance of a varied assortment of local leaders with the inspiration, desire, and/or chutzpah to save the day. Who were these “Judges”? Who did they judge, who did they fight, and who or what did they fight for? Through a close reading of their stories, we will explore these questions, as well as what lessons each of them can teach us personally and religiously today. Rabbi Stephen Belsky is a graduate of the Educators Program at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem, and was ordained by Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School in New York. He has taught classes to both adults and children in the New York City area and here in Michigan, and has lectured at synagogues throughout the country. Advanced registration is required to Alison Blau at 248-851-6880 or [email protected] 7 TOSAT & Dish Kosher Cuisine TIKKUN OLAM SOCIAL ACTION TEAM (TOSAT) – Dedicated to Improving the World Every year our Tikkun Olam Action Team (TOSAT) is involved with several activities that support our community. We’d love to have you be a part of these mitzvahs. Here are a few volunteer opportunities we hope you will consider: On Sunday, November 15, we will once again be delivering groceries for Yad Ezra clients. We need 3-4 teams of 2 people. If you haven’t done this before, there is a great joy in helping out seniors who cannot get groceries on their own. You meet at Yad Ezra and are given names and addresses and the groceries to be delivered. This usually takes 1-2 hours. If you are interested or would like more information please contact Judy Vine at [email protected] or 248-303-6201. Each Chanukah we work with Jewish Family Services to purchase gifts for their clients in need. There are many ways you can be a part of this tradition: 1. Make a donation of “chai”, or any amount that is right for you. Please put Chanukah/JFS in the memo line of your check made out to Congregation Beth Ahm. Your donations will allow us to buy new clothes, books and toys, etc. 2. Jewish family services will give us a list of what each family needs. We need shoppers to stretch our dollars as far as possible. 3. Then we wrap the gifts and deliver them to JFS. Be part of this fun team effort! On December 25, Jewish Federation has a long tradition of recruiting volunteers for Mitzvah Day. Many of you are already a part of that tradition. This year we would like to have a Beth Ahm Team be part of this community wide event. There are a wide variety of volunteer opportunities and I will help coordinate them with the Federation. What a great way to help our neighbors. For more information on any of these mitzvah activities, or to sign up, please contact Debi King at [email protected] or 248-224-5773. Thanks in advance for your support! Upcoming Yad Ezra Delivery Dates: Sunday, November 15, 2015 Sunday, March 6, 2016 Sunday, July 24, 2016 Debi King 248-224-5773 [email protected] The time is ripe to start planning a holiday party. Minyan Matters Message from the President Dear Friends, As was mentioned in the previous synagogue bulletin, I assumed the role of minyan coordinator replacing Nancy Kaplan on September 1. My wife Marilynn and I have been very actively involved in synagogue life in the community for more than thirty-five years, most recently coming to Congregation Beth Ahm in 2012. Over that time I have come to understand the importance of daily minyan to a synagogue community. So, it was somewhat easy to say “yes” when I was asked to take on the minyan coordinator responsibilities. Our shul is dedicated to continuing its tradition of a strong daily minyan, both mornings and evenings. It is due to the participation of more than one hundred dedicated volunteers. It allows those who are grieving the loss of a loved one or who are saying kaddish on the anniversary of the death of a loved one to recite the Mourner’s Kaddish. The number of participants fluctuates over time as new mourners begin their period of mourning while others complete theirs. So, there is a continuing need and opportunity for new participants to get involved and help keep our minyan strong. I encourage you to join our minyan team as a regular attendee (e.g. one morning or evening a week) or as an on-call volunteer. Most morning minyans run 35-40 minutes while evening minyans run 15-20 minutes. If you join us, you will not regret it. You will be doing a mitzvah, feel a sense of community and know that you are helping to continue an important Jewish tradition. As an added bonus, there is the camaraderie of a minyan breakfast if you are able to be a morning participant. To volunteer or for more information, please call or email me. I wish you and your family a sweet, healthy and happy New Year! (For the parents who are starting to feel a bit mortified---I didn’t see this happen, but heard about it with no names attached.) You may remember that I took the opportunity at Kol Nidre to both remind and teach people that they should not use their cell phones in synagogue on Yom Kippur (or Shabbat and other holidays). Perhaps he was just so hungry, that he forgot what I had said or chose not to listen (teenagers do that sometimes, I’ve heard). Regardless of the reason, I want to take the opportunity to revisit what I said at Kol Nidre because I believe that it could actually make a difference in our lives long before next Kol Nidre. What I said at Kol Nidre is that we owe it to ourselves and the community in the synagogue to not use cell phones in shul on Yom Kippur. We owe it to ourselves because we are meant to leave the distractions that can come from using them outside while we focus on the important things we need to accomplish together on the holiday---introspection and prayer within a communal context. We owe it to others because in order to create a space where introspection and prayer can happen we need the cooperation and dedicated attention of everyone in the room. As you already know, being in synagogue on Yom Kippur is not the only time or place that focus and attention are called for. So many of us find ourselves distracted when we should be focused on the people in front of us, the work in front of us, or the opportunities in front of us. During Yom Kippur, I quoted from a piece called ‘Write The Letter’ by Rabbi Ed Feinstein. In encouraging us to write down the wisdom we have learned over the course of our lives, Rabbi Feinstein teaches: Modernity has brought us many gifts. But one of the casualties of modernity is contemplation. Our ancestors lived in a much slower world. They had time to think, to dream. So we live exhausted from day to day, from appointment to project to vacation and back again, without ever stopping to wonder why and without the chance to grow in wisdom. Yom Kippur is one of those easy times to slow down and to think because you are in a space which encourages you to do so. (If you are looking for a weekly opportunity for this, Shabbat is the answer.) I don’t know if people took my message/request that they not use cell phones in the synagogue on Yom Kippur to heart or not; it is a bit hard to tell from the front of the Sanctuary. I hope that Yom Kippur provided you just the right opportunity and experience that you needed. And I hope that you will find ways to make space—both physical and mental—for contemplation, growth, and celebration in the coming year. Rabbi Steven Rubenstein 248-851-6880 ext. 17 [email protected] The National Museum of American Jewish Military History is building a database that includes service/burial information of Jewish veterans.
