Two images from that time will forever be part of my consciousness. The first is from Sukkot, the hundreds of sukkahs squeezed in alleyways, on terraces, in front of restaurants. The second was during Hanukkah. Affixed to a number of houses, especially in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City, there are glass boxes into which a menorah is placed and lit during the Festival of Lights. Instead of ‘merely’ placing the menorah in the window, for these homes publicizing the miracle means allowing anyone who passes by during one of the nights of Hanukkah the experience of seeing the beautiful flames up close and personal. There is an interesting connection between those two holidays, Sukkot and Hanukkah. During the Maccabean war of independence against the Syrian Greeks, while the Temple in Jerusalem was occupied, the Judeans were unable to celebrate the eight day autumn festival of Sukkot. Many biblical historians believe that when the Jews reclaimed their kingdom and re-dedicated their Temple, they instituted an eight-day festival that both celebrated their military victory and compensated for the Sukkot that they had been forced to miss. Only later, according to this theory, did the rabbis add the legend of the miraculous lasting oil given for the length of Hanukkah, and the peaceful nature of that sweet story soon erased the memory of Hanukkah as the winter militarized version of Sukkot. History is not all that these two holy days share. Both include central rituals that attempt to extend the peace, hope and love from our homes out into the larger world: in Sukkot through the building of the sukkah shelter outside in public view and in Hanukkah by allowing everyone to see our candles lighting up the dark night. With so much pain, sadness and hatred in the world, including recent flaring of violence and ethnic/racial divisions in Jerusalem and St. Louis, these observances point us to a way forward, to manifesting in the universe those qualities that are most beautiful and healing to us. I hope you will be able to join us on the first night of Hanukkah which falls this year on Tuesday, December 16th. Though we each light one candle on the menorah that evening (the program starts at 5:00 pm), we will multiply the light that night by everyone who shows up (bring your own Hanukkah menorah) and fill the spaces between and around us with love, peace, and hope. In addition, our sukkah is still around this winter to try and extend our shelter of peace to Ferguson and beyond, bringing us full circle to the first Hanukkah! And it will likely still be standing on December 31st at 6:00 am when you are invited to join hundreds of people from the Universal Faith community for another beautiful World Peace Day service filled with meditation, music and inspiration. Let there be peace (and light) on earth and let it begin with me! Friday Tanakh Study Fridays, 1:45-3:00-ish pm On December 5th … we will begin reading the Book of Joshua, primarily in English, with Hebrew explanations. As usual, there will be a lot of discussion, that will surely take us down many roads! Joshua 1:1 After the death of Moses, the servant of Adonai, Adonai said to Joshua, son of Nun, Moses’ attendant: My servant Moses is dead. Prepare to cross the Jordan. The Books of Joshua and Judges tell us of the fulfillment of Adonai’s promise made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that their descendants would have possession of the Land. Joshua is the continued story of the fulfillment of the covenant between Adonai and the Israelites. If you’re thinking about joining our study and journey…this is a great time! No need to RSVP…you are always welcome. If you have any questions, please contact Maggie Duwe at [email protected]. LGBT Latke Party Friday, December 19, 6:00 pm Join us as we celebrate Chanukah! Or learn how to spell it! Let’s eat a lotta latkes and share a Shabbat dinner! Please bring the following to share for about 12 people: A-F (vegetable side dish or salad), G-N (vege main), O-Z (dessert and wine). Feel free to bring your menorah and candles! Please RSVP to [email protected]. education and more Green Team Update CRC is in the final stages of its Greenfaith certification. We are just waiting for final approval of cleaning materials. Once that is completed, we will be certified as a green congregation. Our garden is done for the season. We had a good season filled with tomatoes, green peppers, cucumbers, hot peppers, flowers, okra, herbs, and pumpkins along with things we can’t quite describe. Future events include cleanup of the beds, deciding what to plant for the spring, and a recruitment get-together for volunteers. Also, monthly information and wellness sessions are in the works to further explore gardens, bees, and healthy cooking . If you are interested in working on our CRC garden next spring, please contact Maria DeShields at (302) 690-8666 or [email protected]. Are you a Composter? If so, we need your help! The CRC Green Team is issuing a call for composting experts. Building fertile soil to grow healthy, productive plants is a gardener’s ultimate goal. We can improve the appearance and nutritional value of our CRC garden soil by adding items such as fall leaves and fresh grass clippings, by composting yard and kitchen waste, and by using castings from earth worms. But we need some help getting started. if you are interested, please contact Jennifer Bernstein at (314) 361-1564, ext. 117 or [email protected]. A Message from Essie At CRC’s Religious School, students learn about Judaism through facts, stories, symbols, rituals and Hebrew. Students also learn “Jewish Values.” Embedded throughout the curriculum and teacher training, the following Anti-Bias goals are modeled and emphasized: (from Jewish Every Day) •Children should feel pride, not superiority, about being Jewish •We are all made in God’s Image – B’Tzelem Elohim •All people are worthy, loveable, capable, equal, . . . •All people are important and deserve respect – Kavod •People are alike and different. •Appreciate what all people share that makes us human •Everyone has feelings •It is important to try new experiences Jewish values are taught, discussed and modeled in each classroom, hallway and interaction at CRC. Jewish values do not just apply to how we treat other Jews, but how we navigate in our larger world. Please take some time this holiday season to consider what you value, how you act on your values and what you might be teaching in your actions and reactions to your larger world. Take time to be kind, laugh, love and learn, every day! Live life on purpose and with purpose. Live Jewishly! Peace and B’Shalom, Essie tikkun olam Weatherization Project - save the Dates! Wednesday, December 3, 6:00 pm & Saturday, December 6, 12:00 pm - Materials Prep Saturday, December 13, 12:00 - 4:00 pm – South City Sunday, December 14, 12:00 - 4:00 pm – North City As one of Central Reform Congregation’s longest community partnerships, we have been helping weatherize in the Grace Hill neighborhood since 1990. Work with a team of other community volunteers to place plastic on interior windows of select area resident homes to keep our neighbors warm this winter. This year we will focus on elderly residents within the Grace Hill service area. Last year we added a community garden project in Peace Park, which was a great success. We cleaned and secured the beds for winter so they were ready for spring planting. No special skills are needed, so please bring your friends or family (12 and older) and join us for this worthwhile project. Contact: Marcy Brodsky, (314) 302-8957 or email at [email protected] to volunteer, for questions, or directions (map will be provided). Volunteer at Langston M.S. Longtime CRC member Ariel Arpadi is the social worker at Langston Middle School, right near CRC. It’s so close to us that if CRC were a home with middle school students, they would attend Langston Middle School! Rabbi Susan and Jen Bernstein met with her recently about collaborating on several projects, including mentoring the students. We are looking for a few champions who are interested in being mentors for Ariel’s kids at Langston. The program will begin shortly after the first of the year. If you are interested, please contact Jen Bernstein at (314) 361-1564, ext. 117 or [email protected]. Social Responsibility Shabbat Friday, December 12, 7:30 pm For the 20-something generation, building grassroots power and leadership to create strong, sustainable communities is paramount to fixing the systemic issues that lead to the August 9th shooting death of Michael Brown. For many, this means putting their lives outside of work on hold and devoting themselves to organizing for peace and justice. The group Millenial Activists United (MAU) is just one of a myriad of alliances formed to peacefully protest as the Grand Jury continues to deliberate its decision whether or not to indict Officer Darren Wilson. (At the time of this Memo printing, the decision had yet to be announced). For December’s Social Responsibility Shabbat, we have arranged to hear from 5 speakers representing MAU, as well as some of the artists (slam poetry, musicians, etc) who have been involved in the movement, including our beloved KB Frazier. Regardless of your opinion on the matter, we feel it’s important to hear from those who have been on the frontlines everyday. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Jennifer Bernstein at (314) 3611564, ext. 117 or jenniferb@centralreform. org. We are collecting... qq Men’s, women’s, and children’s gently worn coats/gloves/hats for the International Institute to assist recent immigrants and others in need. qq Yarn to make scarves to be distributed through Centenary Methodist Church and St. Cronin’s as they hand out blankets to the homeless. qq New and gently used shoes for the Soles4Souls project. CRC member Sydney Singer, who is one of our post-Bat Mitzvah students, is excited to bring this wonderful project back to CRC. She has been working with an organization called Soles4Souls for several years now. qq Toiletries to be distributed on Christmas to Ronald McDonald House at Mercy Hospital and Langston Middle School. qq Non-perishable food and clothes for our tikkun closet. winter crc news 6 A Walk Down Delancey Street with Triple Chai Plus Sunday, December 7, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm, CRC Multipurpose Room Join us as we view Crossing Delancey, one of the classic 20th Century films on Jewish Culture/Humor. Set in 1980s New York, this romantic comedy highlights the contrasting values between first and third generation American Jews, the struggles of old vs. new ways, by focusing on a 33 year old single Jewish woman, ”Izzy,” played by Amy Irving. Arnie Kaplan, who recently used this film in his course on “Jewish Humor” at Washington University’s Lifelong Learning Institute will lead us in the discussion focusing on recent cultural issues that are raised in the film. Please bring a dish to share. If your last name begins with A-L, please bring an entree. If your last name begins with M-Z, please bring a salad or side dish. To RSVP, or for more information, please contact Claire Hyman at [email protected] or Anita Wilson at (314) 878-3502 or [email protected]. CRC Grief Support Group Please join us for our monthly grief support group, on the 3rd Saturday of the month at 1:00 pm. All who have experienced the loss of a friend, family member, or loved one are invited to attend. Together, we will listen and learn from one another, helping to make connections and finding ways to support one another through the grief process. The group is co-led by Jamie Sentnor, LCSW, who is a practicing therapist and grief support specialist and Rabbi Deana Sussman, who has been trained in adult and child grief support. If you have any questions, feel free to be in touch with either of us by emailing Rabbi Deana at [email protected] or Jamie at [email protected]. Babysitting Information Every Saturday morning during Shabbat services we offer free babysitting. If you would like to attend the service with adults only, we welcome your children to join us in the Youth Group Room for babysitting during the service. Please email Leah Greenbaum at [email protected] let us know if your children will be attending. World Peace Day Wednesday, December 31, 6:00 am Yes, That’s 6:00 am! World Peace Day is celebrated at the same time around the world (It’s at 4:00 am on the West Coast.) And in St. Louis, CRC has been its annual host. The celebration is an amalgam of world spiritual practices --both reflective and joyous. CRC is transformed with prayer flags, crystals, and incense. Come early, walk the labyrinth created on the oneg floor and meditate. B’yachad...A New Shabbat Experience that Rabbi Deana is helping to Spearhead Are you a young adult who is looking for a different kind of Shabbat experience? B’Yachad, a new spiritual Shabbat community for Jews in their 20s and 30s, is holding its first Shabbat service on Friday, December 12 at 7pm at Tech Artista in the CWE. The evening will continue with a delicious (and free) meal from Thai 202. For more information or to RSVP, visitwww.facebook.comevents/420248638124316/. Also, “like” our page on Facebook, B’Yachad STL, to stay up to date on all of our future services. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. confirmation trip to nyc 7 Eighteen of our Confirmation students traveled to New York City the weekend of November 14-16 with Rabbi Susan, Margie Hartman, Andrew Bollinger, and Nicole Osheroff as chaperones. Despite a rough start with a cancelled flight, the group arrived only a couple hours later than anticipated and didn’t miss any of planned activities. They started with an authentic New York lunch of knishes from Yona Shimmel’s Knishery and took the ferry to Ellis Island to discuss the story of immigration, then and now. Friday evening, the group went to Kabbalat Shabbat services at The New Shul, with Rabbi Zach Fredman (a native St. Louisan who grew up at CRC). After a meaningful service, including a teaching by Rabbi Susan, the group had a lively dinner at Sammy’s Roumanian Steakhouse, complete with entertainment (a bar/bat mitzvah-like atmosphere). Saturday and Sunday the group enjoyed the Tenement Museum, and lunch at Katz’s Deli. Saturday, perhaps the most meaningful and most profound experience was receiving a tour of the World Trade Center Tribute Center by a survivor of 9/11. They enjoyed dinner at Ellen’s Stardust Diner and the musical Cabaret, complete with a talk-back with the actors after the show. On Sunday they visited the studio of a rabbi who does art to find God and meaning in her life, before they explored the Chassidic community of Crown Heights to experience the traditions that they practice to find meaning. Although some of the destinations on the itinerary sound familiar, this was not your average school trip to New York City. Jewish content was woven through the entire weekend and activities were infused with the values we hold dear at CRC. Thank you for a wonderful weekend, Confirmation Class of 5775! tributes 8 tributes TO MAKE A TRIBUTE TO A CRC FUND ONLINE, PLEASE GO TO WWW.CENTRALREFORM.ORG, AND CLICK ON THE DONATE/TRIBUTE LINK ON THE BOTTOM OF THE MENU.
