TEN GOOD REASONS TO GO TO
SYNAGOGUE ON FRIDAY NIGHT
This is a special time of year and as you read this,
Chanukah or Hanukkah (the Festival of Lights) is fast
approaching. The first candle lighting is Friday, December 11th – the eve of the 25th day of Kislev. The Hebrew word “Chanukah” means “dedication” and refers
to the joyous 8-day celebration through which Jews
commemorate the victory of the Maccabees over the
armies of Syria in 165 BCE and the subsequent liberation and “rededication” of the Temple in Jerusalem.
Technically, Chanukah is considered a “minor” Jewish
festival (work may be performed and children may attend school), yet it ranks as one of the most beloved
Jewish family holidays & a symbol of Jewish identity.
Clearly, the rituals which emerged from it, and the special games and foods combined to capture the Jewish
imagination have elevated its status within the Jewish
community.
Chanukah is a fun time for family and friends. It is an
old celebration that we continue to enjoy around the
world today. We continue the many joyous customs
and ceremonies commemorating the liberation of our
people and their affirmation of human dignity and freedom of religion. We enjoy the traditions of lighting the
menorah, playing the dreidel game (one of the few
times of the year when the rabbis permit games of
chance), reciting prayers, singing songs, eating latkes,
exchanging gifts.
When all is said and done, perhaps the most important
message of Chanukah may be found in the name of
the holiday itself – Dedication. When Jews have dedicated themselves, through faith and action, to the pursuit of high religious and human ideals, Judaism has
been strong. That imperative, to strengthen our religion and our people, remains an important challenge at
this season, in every generation.
At Temple Beth Tikvah, on Friday evening, December
18th we will, once again, celebrate Chanukah with

and God, getting together for rest and renewal.

THE TRUE STORY OF HANUKKAH
So what is the true story of Hanukkah? Is the real miracle the oil that burned for 8 days?
The True Story of Hanukkah: (175-165 BCE) King Antiochus IV wanted all the Jews to follow the ways
of Greek society. He wanted to be treated as a god and resented the Jewish belief in one God. This
pressure caused a rift in the Jewish community and the age old dilemma of religion vs. secularism ensued. Judah Maccabee and his followers decided that they would stay true to the Torah. This is the
true story of Hanukkah.
The Real Miracle of Hanukkah: Judah Maccabee and his small group of followers defeated the large
Greek forces. Judaism prevailed. That is both the legacy and the miracle of Hanukkah.
During December, teaching our children to respect differences and still maintain Jewish identity is a delicate balance. Gift giving is an area that lends itself to teaching lessons that separate religion and secularism. Instead of allowing our children to be swept up in the stream of holiday commercialism, we can
show them the Jewish way. With the help of your children, choose an organization or cause that interests them and donate money that you would have spent on Hanukkah gifts. Part of the Jewish way to
celebrate is to think of those who are less fortunate. Don’t let Hanukkah be about imitating the secular
world…let it be about Jewish values, Jewish history and being Jewish. That is the way to make our Hanukkah meaningful in our modern world.

CARING COMMUNITY OPEN BREAKFAST MEETING
If you would like to give a small amount of your time this year to help your fellow-congregants
or you would like to see what our committee does, please join us at our next Caring Community Breakfast Meeting to be held on Sunday, December 13, 2009 at 9:30 AM.
We would also like to thank the many congregants who signed up at the holiday
ticket pick-up to help other congregants. We will be calling upon you in the near
future to invite you to join us at the December 13 breakfast.
CARING COMMUNITY HOLIDAY BASKETS
A special “thank you” is extended to a group of dedicated volunteers who
met before the holidays to prepare and deliver “Remembrance Baskets”
to our congregants who had a loss during the past year. Rickie Bernstein,
our Temple Good and Welfare Chairman, provided the list. This project
is coordinated by Wendy Bowes. Baskets of honey and apples were delivered with a note prepared by Claire Glasser, saying we hope the congregants will have a sweeter year next year. Wendy’s committee consisted of Mary Moroch, Wendy Farber, Averil Moskow, Bunny Levine,
Leslie Frommer, Bobbi Kraus, Ashley Mackoul and Adrienne Migdale.

On October 30, 2009, Temple Beth Tikvah welcomed its new members for
the new Jewish year of 5770 with individual recognition and a Certificate of
Appreciation during a very special Oneg Shabbat. Membership Chair Janice
Paul welcomed each new member in part by saying, “On behalf of the entire
congregation, we welcome our new members to the Temple Beth Tikvah
family, and we thank you for joining us. For you to have officially joined
Temple Beth Tikvah this year is truly a mitzvah. Your dedication to
Judaism, to your children’s Jewish education and to helping to support the
greater Jewish community is admirable. Especially in challenging
economic times such as these, for you to have made active membership of
this synagogue a priority in your lives is certainly to be commended.
“As the years go on, we very much look forward to your ongoing
participation and to your active commitment in helping to keep Temple
Beth Tikvah the vibrant religious, social, cultural and educational Jewish
center it is. I know for me, this synagogue has long been a home away from
home, and I sincerely hope that you and your families have already begun to
feel the same way. As the newest members of the Temple Beth Tikvah

TBT REMEMBERS
RABBI SHAI SHACKNAI WITH 40TH MEMORIAL LECTURE
On November 13, TBT honored the memory of its first rabbi, Shai Shacknai, through the Rabbi Shai Shacknai
Memorial Lecture delivered by Rabbi Hillel Gamoran on the topic “Who’s Afraid of the Talmud?”
Rabbi Shai Shacknai came to Temple Beth Tikvah in 1960 as its first full-time rabbi. This was his first and only pulpit.
In the course of nine years of consecrated service, Rabbi Shacknai established himself as a leader in the Jewish
community of North Jersey and in Wayne. A driving force behind the growth of the TBT congregation, he molded a
community of diverse backgrounds and traditions into a vital and responsive kehilla. To his congregants, Rabbi
Shacknai was teacher, mentor, counselor and leader. To the many people whose lives he touched, his death at the age
of 38 was felt as a deep personal loss.
The Annual Lecture, as a living memorial to Rabbi Shacknai, was begun in 1971 at the suggestion of Rabbi Shacknai’s
successor, Rabbi Israel Dresner, in collaboration with Rabbi Shacknai’s widow, Shirley Shacknai Freedman. Each
year, around the time of Rabbi Shacknai’s yahrzeit, TBT brings a Jewish scholar, artist or leader to Wayne to provide a
learning experience for the members of the congregation that he knew and loved.
The 40th Annual Rabbi Shai Shacknai Memorial Lecture was delivered by Rabbi Shacknai’s friend Rabbi Hillel
Gamoran. Rabbi Gamoran served as the spiritual leader of Beth Tikvah Congregation in Hoffman Estates, IL for 34
years. He then moved to Seattle where he taught Rabbinic literature at the University of Washington before retiring
recently. TBT was honored to learn from Rabbi Gamoran and to honor Rabbi Shacknai’s memory in this
important way. Thanks go to Adult Education Chair Janet Shapiro for helping to organize this event.

led by Sue Ungerleider. Adam and Eve were told to

On November 17, approximately three dozen
TBT seniors and friends attended the first in
our 2009-2010 Senior Daytime Series. TBT’s
own Shirley Laiks, retired principal of the
TBT Religious School, presented “Notable
Jewish Nobel Laureates” from the wellknown such as Albert Einstein to those less
known such as 100-year-old Dr. Rita LeviMontalcini. Everyone’s Jewish pride soared
as they were introduced to Jewish Nobel
prize winners and learned of their noteworthy
achievements and accomplishments.
Thanks go to Shirley Laiks for her
generosity of time and knowledge and to our
Senior Liaison Barbara Reiss for helping to
organize the program.

On November 16, the TBT 3rd grade students and
their families were invited to attend a Family
Education Session led by Rabbi Wylen about “The
Meaning of Mitzvah.” The session served as a
wonderful opportunity for parents to learn alongside their children about what constitutes a
mitzvah and to engage in a lively conversation
about why mitzvah is a core tenet of Judaism.
Family Education Sessions are held for Grades 3
through 6 of the Religious School as an integral
part of the learning experience.
