guests in attendance,

Westmount, Eddie Orrell, Ian MacDonald, CBRM Mayor, Cecil
Clarke and Councillor Clarence Prince.
Items were also placed in a time capsule which will be housed
at the Sydney Mines Heritage Museum to be opened during the
150th Anniversary of the Incorporation of Sydney Mines.
Finally, what would an anniversary celebration be without a
delicious cake and a good cup of Cape Breton tea as the official
cake cutting was performed by our special guests and served to
those in attendance.
Many thanks go out to those that attending and assisted in
making this event possible in any way. Do not forget there will
be events each month until December 31st to make this
amazing milestone of Sydney Mines.

Universal When he finished what eventually
turned out to be his last concert
tour in 2011 Stompin’ Tom
Connors decided to start recording
a 10 album project of songs he
performed live during his 60 plus
years of traveling from coast to
coast, playing in just about every
hole-in-the wall bar and club from
one end of this country to the other.
This (“Unreleased-Songs from the
Info - 794-5402
Vault Collection Volume 1”) is the
first album from that project and a
number of the songs on this one
are done in a stripped down barebones presentation, with just
Tom’s vocals and his old Gibson
guitar, and that’s exactly where
their strength lies; “Truck Drivin’
Man”, “Nobody’s Child”, “I
Overlooked An Orchid” and “North
To Alaska” all show us just how
much Tom’s ‘average Joe’
approach to music worked, all the
while hinting at how incredibly
talented he really was as a
troubadour for our nation. It’s also
uncanny how much Tom sounds
like the Crash Test Dummy’s lead
singer Brad Roberts on “Swanee
River”, or maybe it’s that Brad
sounds like Stompin’ Tom? Tom’s

Tom’s best original songs to be
included here, songs done with a
back-up band; “My Stompin’
Grounds” is an absolute Canadian
classic that really is Tom’s
story….and ours as well. The name
drops of the provinces in the lyrics
help to make this song a patriotic
masterpiece in Canadian music
history. Of course, the famous
‘foot-on-the-plywood stomp’ just
adds that extra special touch.

C . A . N . A . D . A . ” .
By the way, one of Tom’s
“stompin’ boards” was auctioned
off for charity in 2011-fetching
$15,000.00 making it what it
reported to be the most valuable
piece of plywood on the planet!
Tom’s great finger-picking is
highlighted on “Darktown Strutter’s
Ball” and the instrumental “Turkey
In The Straw”, and “Ode For The
Road” is another one of Tom’s
musical travelogues-pure Canadiana. Stompin’ Tom Connors was
fiercely patriotic and never wanted
to be a part of the Canadian music
establishment, even boycotting the
Juno Awards over their practice of
nominating Canadian artists even
though they lived and conducted
their business side of things south
of the border, and he even returned
6 of his Juno Awards in protest. He
also formed his own record label,
Boot Records, for Canadian artist
releases, which included Rita
MacNeil. The nation lost a true
Canadian icon when Stompin’ Tom
passed away in March of last year;
this album is a great start to
remembering him and honouring
him.
