NCC MEET
It’s the Lady Kats turn to take on Muncie Central. It’s on Saturday afternoon with the JV contest
beginning at noon.
The Lady Bearcats are 11-5 this season, 4-2 in the North Central Conference.
Our Lady Kats have an 11-6 record so far this year and are 5-2 in the NCC. Richmond leads the
league with a 6-0 mark, and Marion is second, right ahead of Kokomo, with a 5-1 record.
The Sagarin Ratings have Muncie Central as the 56th best in the state, while Kokomo is ranked 99th
according to Sagarin.
Kokomo and Muncie Central have five common opponents this season. Both have defeated
Anderson and Lafayette Jeff, and both have lost to Richmond. The Lady Kats defeated Marion and
lost to Huntington North, while the Lady Bearcats fell to the Lady Giants and beat the Lady Vikes.
The Lady Bearcats lost to Greenfield-Central on Tuesday, breaking a six-game win streak.
Kokomo lost both of their last two games, falling to two Illinois schools in the Chicagoland
Classic.
Muncie Central averages 52.8 points per game, while allowing 43.2.
Kokomo has an offensive average of 46.6 and gives up 45.2.
Muncie Central returns three starters from last year’s game with the Lady Kats – Savannah
Jackson, Ka’Chell Tate, and Fa’Tara Davis.
Kokomo also returns three starters from a year ago – Kaila Stiner, Allie Lowe, and Gabrielle
Smith.
Jayla Scaife, an Indiana Junior All-Star candidate, did not play against Kokomo last season. She
was injured.
Ka’Chell Tate led the Lady Kats in scoring with 14 points in last season’s loss to Kokomo.
Jasmine Love and Gabrielle Smith were Kokomo’s leading scorers in the Lady Kats 55-37 win
over Muncie Central last year with 18 and 10 points, respectively.
Allie Lowe had six rebounds in last season’s Kokomo-Muncie Central game, helping the Lady
Kats to a 34-18 advantage on the glass.
Saturday afternoon’s game will be the 34th meeting between the two schools in girls’ basketball.
Kokomo has thoroughly dominated this series, winning 32 of the first 33 matchups.
The only time Muncie Central defeated the Lady Kats was on January 21, 1995 at the Fieldhouse
in Muncie. It was a five-point Lady Bearcat win, 56-51.
In the aforementioned Muncie Central win, Kokomo was led in scoring by sophomore guard
Tamie Stiner, who scored 19. Tamie is the mother of current Lady Kat Kaila Stiner.
Kokomo has won the last 20 games in the series.
Muncie Central’s defensive average of 43.2 points per game is the second best in the North
Central Conference. McCutcheon’s defensive norm is 42.1.
Kokomo and Muncie Central are third and fourth, respectively, in the league in rebounding.
The Lady Kats’ 39.4% field goal average is second best in the league.
Kokomo has made the fewest three-pointers of any team in the conference.
The Bearcats’ Jayla Scaife is second in the NCC in scoring at 21.2 points per game. She trails
only Richmond’s Destiny Perkins, who has an average of 24.9.
Jayla Scaife is the top rebounder in the North Central Conference at 12.2 boards per game.
Only three girls’ basketball players in the NCC have attempted more than 100 free throws. That
list includes Jayla Scaife, who has 104 tries from the charity stripe.

in steals at 2.6 per game.
Jayla Scaife is third in the conference in steals with 3.1 per contest.
Jayla Scaife is the top shot blocker in the NCC with 2.8 per contest. Olivia Wilson is third with

Devils on Saturday. JV tip is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
The Blue Devils have a long trip to Benton Central tonight and will take an 8-2 record into the
game with the Bison.
Tipton’s two losses have come to 12-1 Frankton and 7-3 Central Catholic. Both setbacks have
come on Tipton’s home court.
The Blue Devils are ranked 13th in the Associated Press Class 2A poll.
Tipton has a young roster, having more freshmen (2) than seniors (1)
The Blue Devils are 4-2 at home. Kokomo is 2-4 on the road.
The Sagarin Ratings have Tipton as the 111th best team in the state and Kokomo as the 159th.
Tomorrow’s game will be the 109th matchup on the hardwood between the two schools.
Kokomo holds an 89-19 advantage in the series.
The two schools didn’t play a year ago because of the weather, breaking a string of 33 straight
years that the two schools have faced one another.
Tipton won the last meeting, a 57-56 overtime cliffhanger at Tipton two years ago.
The series dates back to three Kokomo wins in the 1916-17 season.
The two non-conference schools that Kokomo has faced the most are Frankfort (128 times) and
Tipton (109, after Saturday).
Lou Lefevre is in his first season as the head coach of the Blue Devils. A veteran of 27 years,
Lefevre has an overall record of 469-198, including a 10-year stint at Providence, where he
never had a losing record. Lefevre, a native of Connecticut and graduate of Central Connecticut
State University, coached in both Connecticut and Georgia before replacing the departed Brad
Dickey at Tipton.
Kokomo and Tipton share two common opponents. Both beat Northfield and Westfield.
Kokomo is the second Class 4A school Tipton will have played, joining Westfield.
The Wildkats have three Class 2A teams on their schedule. They have defeated Northfield, play
Tipton tomorrow, and host Lewis Cass next Saturday.

IHSAA Tournament Games
Spirits ran high before the 1965-66 basketball season at Kokomo High School. The previous
year’s 18-8 mark included sectional and regional titles, but saw the ‘Cats lose to Fort Wayne North
Side in the semi-state, one of two setbacks to the Redskins that season. The Wildcat faithful
thought Kokomo had enough firepower in ’65-’66 to once again reach the heights of the 1961 state
champions.
Coach Les Ray, in his second year at the helm, saw the Wildcats open the season with four straight
wins. Included in those games was a sellout crowd at Memorial Gym when Kokomo played
Lebanon, a team that featured one of the greatest shooters in Indiana high school lore, Rick Mount.
Mount, who averaged 33.1 points per game in his junior and senior seasons at Lebanon, would
later that basketball season become the first high school athlete ever to grace the cover of Sports
Illustrated.
After those four victories to start the season, the ‘Cats hit a dry spell, losing games to Marion,
South Bend Central, and Fort Wayne North Side. Next up for Kokomo came a pair of holiday
tournament wins over Muncie Central and Logansport, the latter a 75-74 nailbiter.
Logansport turned the tables on the ‘Cats with 55-54 Berry victory, and then Kokomo put together
a five-game winning streak, recording victories over Fort Wayne Elmhurst, Frankfort, South Bend
St. Joe, Richmond, and Peru before stumbling in an 71-67 NCC matchup with Anderson. The
‘Cats had a nine-point lead over the Tribe at one point in the game.
After the loss to the Indians, Kokomo ran off wins over Muncie Central, Indianapolis Arsenal
Tech, Southport, and New Castle to finish the regular season with a four-game winning streak.
Tech would eventually make it to the state championship game in 1966.
The Wildkats literally blew away the sectional field with wins over Carroll (90-53), Northwestern
(74-46), and Sharpsville (123-70). The 123 points scored by Kokomo in that 1966 sectional
championship game still stands as the all-time single-game high.
Kokomo would easily defeat Manchester (76-48) and Huntington (69-51) to secure the regional
championship, but lost once again in the semi-state, this time falling to eventual state champion
Michigan City Elston.
Mark Gabriel, who was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001, was the leading
scorer for the 1965-66 Wildcats at 18.4 points per game while pulling down a whopping 16.5
rebounds per game. Other offensive stalwarts that averaged over ten points per game for this team
included Raleigh Grady (12.8) and Marty Edwards (11.3). Willard Rice and Larry Merriweather
contributed over seven points per game. The 1965-66 team finished with a 20-6 record.
