Barnstable Senior
Center ombudsman
The Barnstable Senior Center now
has an ombudsman available. Council
on Aging board member John Jope has
offered his time for this role. Appointments to meet with John at the Senior
Center can be made by calling 508862-4750. John will be available from
9 to 10 a.m. on the first and third
Thursdays each month.
Dear Friends,
It’s going to be a busy fall at the
Senior Center, and we hope you’ll be
part of the action by participating in
some of the fun, exciting and informative events that we have coming
up in the next few months.
I strongly encourage you to join us
at the Senior Center on Friday, Oct.
23 from 2-3:30 p.m. for a Community Forum, where we will share the
key findings and recommendations of
the recently completed needs assessment study. Professor Jan Mutchler
from UMass Boston’s Gerontology
Institute will be here to share information about the project and we will
also discuss how the study will help
guide the Senior Services Division’s
future planning efforts so we can
continue to meet the needs of seniors
in our community. We invite you to
get involved and be a part of the conversation on how to make Barnstable
an age-friendly community! We look
forward to seeing you here but if you
can’t make it the presentation it will
air on Channel 18. The full needs
assessment report will be available
on our website -- www.town.barnstable.ma.us/seniorservices -- after
the forum.
The Friends
of the Barnstable Council on
Aging will host
its annual “Masquerade Ball”
fundraiser at the
Hyannis Golf
Course on Saturday, Oct. 24 from
6-10 p.m. All proceeds from this terrific event will benefit programs and
services of the Barnstable Senior
Center and support the Friend’s Sunshine Fund that provides assistance to
seniors in need. The event will include
a live and silent auction, delicious
food and wonderful entertainment.
Tickets are $40 and are available at
the front desk at the Senior Center.
Also, although December may seem
like a long way off, the holidays will
be here before we know it so don’t
forget to sign up for our annual Holiday Dinner on December 11th!
Finally, I’m happy to share with
you that thanks to the support of the
Town Council, our Adult Supportive
Day program did not have to close its
doors. The Town Council acknowledged the importance and value of
this program to the clients and caregivers in our community who benefit
from it and pledged to provide the
necessary financial support to keep
the program in operation. We are currently accepting new clients so please
help us spread the word!
Hope to see you here soon!

GOING GREEN
Electric car saves money, adds fun
“It’s very exciting for everybody.

of room.”

With a garden of solar panels powering the building, two new electric
vehicle chargers and its own electric
car, the Barnstable Senior Center has
gone green.
The car, a silver Nissan Leaf, was
a gift from the Friends of Barnstable
Council on Aging, which voted in
March (appropriately enough for a
“green” move, at a St. Patrick’s Day
dinner) to cover the $1,163 down payment on the car. More recently, the
group voted to take on the monthly
lease payments as well, donating a
lump sum of $3,991 to the town for
the three-year lease. The total cost of
the car was $5,400, because the town
got it at a reduced cost under a special
state rebate program.
As part of the car lease, the Senior
Center got two electric chargers
installed on site, and one of them is
available for use by the public, for free.
When it’s not in use, the Leaf is charging so it will be ready for its next ride.
Senior Center Director Madeline
Noonan said while the center still
operates its two handicap-accessible
vans, those are costly to run (they get
about 8 miles to the gallon) and not
necessary for many clients, who have
no trouble getting in and out of a car.
And aside from the energy and cost
savings, seniors in town are really
enjoying the ride. “There’s such glee,
when they get a ride in the Leaf,”
Noonan said.
Senior Center Transportation Director Judy Redd said the Leaf goes out
about six times a day. Since mid-June,
it has traveled 1,323 miles, providing rides to 30 different clients. “It’s
very exciting for everybody,” Redd
said. “It’s comfortable, it’s got a lot
of room.”
Redd said the Senior Center provides
rides to seniors in town to a variety of
destinations, from medical appointments to banks, grocery stores and
beauty salons. “Whatever they need,”
she said, noting it is very difficult for
older people when they stop driving.
Even senior citizens who still drive,
she added, sometimes make use of the
center’s transportation service when
they need to go for medical procedures
that temporarily limit driving.
The Leaf has provided another
benefit: an increase in the number of
volunteer drivers. The center relies on
volunteers to run the transportation
program, and Redd observed many
people are reluctant to drive the vans.
In fact, she said, two former volunteers who no longer wanted to drive
the vans came back to volunteer when
they learned about the Leaf.
Volunteer driver Dennis Connors,
who drives both the vans and the new
Leaf, said the new car allows for much
greater interaction with passengers
because they are much closer. He has
been enjoying the conversations he has
with the clients while driving them.
Transportation is “a critical issue”
for seniors, Noonan said. Noting
the Senior Center has been offering
transportation services to seniors
in Barnstable since 1998, she said,
“People tell us it’s a lifesaver. ... It
helps them stay connected.”

OUTREACH
Real Estate Tax Assistance
Starting in August and continuing
through March of 2016 you can apply
or re-apply for assistance with your
real estate taxes, clause 41C, deferrals
or veterans’ assistance. This needs to
be done every year to get the reduction on you house taxes. You can also
apply for the veterans or blind assistance program, if you qualify, now also.
These are the financial requirements for
2015/2016 for the 41C Elder assistance.
Requirements: Single, $32,404
income, $55,695 assets; married
$47,193 income, $76,563 assets.
You must be 65 years or older, have
owned and occupied the property on
July 1, 2014 and be a legal resident of
Massachusetts for at least 10 years and
owned property in Massachusetts for
at least five years. If you need assistance or a list of paper work needed to
apply please call the outreach department at 508-862-4754 for Claudia,
508-862-4752 for Judy or the Assessors office at Town Hall.
Fuel Assistance
Now is the time for fuel assistance
for the winter of 2015/2016. If you had
fuel assistance last winter you should
have received a renewal application in
August or September. We will have the
new applications for folks that haven’t
applied on Sept. 25, 2015. The program
doesn’t start until November but they
like to start processing the paper work
early. Last year if your income was less
than $32,618 for one or for a house of
two and your combined income is less
that $42,654 you are eligible for fuel
assistance. It should go up a little for
this year. For help with your renewal
application call the outreach department at 508-862-4754.
Open enrollment for Medicare
Open enrollment for changing
insurances or prescription programs
is Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. By Oct. 1
we will have all the changes that will
be made to Medicare D plans for the
New Year 2016. I encourage every
one to look into at least their D plan
as they change every year. In 2016 it
looks like the deductible will be going
up for most plans and of course they
will change premiums and what medicines they cover. For assistance and
questions and an appointment with a
SHINE counselor you can call the outreach department at 508-862-4754.
