16 SHOWBIZ It’s all about art, all year round, right here on your doorstep. As the Rainbow Stage presents the final performances of Sister Act we see a close to the summer season. We make our last visits to the lake for the season and prepare to close down the cottage for the fall and winter months. While one cottage door closes the whole of downtown opens up with new opportunities to further engage with the arts. The WSO kicks off its new season and marks the 10th year of Alexander Mickelthwate as its music director. We are promised some of the most beautiful works ever written such as Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5, Sibelius 5 and Orff’s Carmina Burina; a Mahler festival including a performance of Symphonie No.10 — a first for Manitoba. The Art of Time Ensemble joins the WSO to re-imagine one of The Beatles’ most iconic albums, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The RWB season is selling out fast. Its 76th Season opens with what is considered the greatest ballet of the romantic era, Giselle. In December, Winnipeg’s favourite holiday tradition, Nutcracker is back with its enchanting story that has captured the hearts of children of all ages for many years. In February, Val Caniparoli’s, Cinderella Story provides a new spin to the classic tale of Cinderella, followed by a wonderful production of Peter Pan in the spring. The RWB will take Winnipeg talent and artistry on tour this season with a production of Moulin Rouge touring the Netherlands and Germany. The MTC opens with The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and Alice Through the Looking Glass, with the wonderful musical Billy Elliot early in the new year. The MTS Centre hosts The Indigenous Music Awards on Sept. 11, a week before The Tenors perform, followed some 48 hours later by Shania Twain and Gavin DeGraw. Don’t forget Culture Days Manitoba with a host of wonderful free activities for everyone. Lots to do in this wonderful city, and so much more to come. The biggest news of all in “the arts” for me is that the Winnipeg Art Gallery and University of Winnipeg announced Scholar and Curator Dr. Julie Nagam as First Chair in History of Indigenous Arts in North America. “There is a growing trend of global recognition of the innovative and dynamic contribution Indigenous artists, curators, and scholars have to offer, and I would like to continue to be at the forefront of this artistic and curatorial renaissance,” comments Dr. Nagam. “I foresee a pivotal moment for Winnipeg as a key site for contemporary Indigenous art. My goals are to empower a new generation of students with knowledge of Indigenous artists, curators, activists, and scholarship, and to place the WAG and UWinnipeg as leading institutions that will showcase the strength of the Indigenous arts community within Manitoba and abroad.” Many congratulations. As I said previously, the visual arts have flourished in Canada, no more so than in the heart of our country, Manitoba and Winnipeg in particular. An Introduction to Winnipeg’s Public Art from the Winnipeg Arts Council INTERNATIONAL WRITERS FESTIVAL where readers meet writers lecteurs et écrivains,réunis Nine days of readings, interviews, talks, and performances, in English and French, by some of today's liveliest writers! “Light Through” Winnipeg’s week-long book club SEPTEMBER 18-26 SEPTEMBRE www.thinairwinnipeg.ca Artist: Bernie Miller • Location: Disraeli Active Transportation Bridge Medium: Stainless Steel • Date: 2013 Light Through is an artwork that consists of sixteen 350 cm tall stainless steel structures that cover the four bridge piers. These structures contain recent and archival photographs depicting the history of the bridge and its surroundings. To perforate the stainless steel panels, the artist developed software to translate the photographic images into patterns of holes. When light shines through these holes, the photographs are distinctly revealed, and picture the lively public interaction with the bridge since 1959. The neighbourhoods of Winnipeg, as a river city, are connected and identified by a variety of bridge styles. This artwork celebrates the Disraeli Bridge, which connects Elmwood to Downtown, by looking back to the bridge’s origins and forward into the future.
