A Message from your President
Spring has arrived. As I was watching
the new leaves budding on the trees,
dormant plants pushing through the
soil, and flowers blooming, I knew
that Pesach was coming. Thoughts of
cleaning and cooking filled my head. As
with every holiday, there was so much to
do and no task ever felt finished. At the
same time, with so much to do for our
families and friends, it was easy to forget
Charisse Sands
the importance of staying focused and
energized on achieving our personal goals.
It is in times like these when I feel the power of Hadassah to keep
us connected to our individual physical, spiritual, and intellectual
needs and to share those experiences with others. The opportunities
are bountiful. Working hard to increase your physical stamina and
maintain a healthy lifestyle? Join the Gumbo Ya-Ya’s walking group,
sign up for the virtual walk, or learn about nutrition by attending
a heart health program. Want to share that passion for health with
the next generation? Support Neat Eats: In Pursuit of Good Health,
a program to expand children’s knowledge on nutrition. Looking
to grow as a parent or grandparent? Attend the Parenting Series
that Hadassah co-sponsors. Or perhaps you are looking to discover
your artistic side? The two-part program on Chagall where you can
TAKE ACTION NOW TO ADVANCE
WOMEN’S ISSUES
Last year the New Orleans chapter joined the Legislative Agenda for
Women (LAW), a coalition of organizations established to develop
and support specific legislation to improve and protect the interests of
women in Louisiana.
Joining the organization meant that we
• Accept the mission and qualification statement(s) and allow
the Hadassah name to be used on publicly shared
documents/messages accordingly
• Support civil rights, economic justice, and personal safety for
all
• Accept that individuals have the right to manage their sexual
and reproductive health and that these rights must be
protected
• Send at least one representative or alternate to most
coordination meetings, who will then report back to the
group
• Commit to matching and sorting membership by legislative
and congressional districts, and to contacting our own
individual members with that information so they can
support and participate individually in LAW’s efforts by
contacting legislators when requested. Each organization
controls its own list.
To maximize our participation in LAW, we met with Michele Erenberg,
from the National Council of Jewish Women, who is also a member of
LAW and whose national organization works closely with our

create a “stained glass” window could be just what you need to find
your inner artist. Whatever interests you are looking to deepen and
expand in your life, Hadassah has a program where you can join
other women with similar passions in pursuit of those same goals.
Finally, every holiday brings with it the opportunity to consider the
ways we might all contribute to our community. There are two ways
you might consider supporting Hadassah this time of year. First,
support the Hadassah directory by asking a business or professional
to advertise in it or by patronizing our advertisers, and informing
them that Hadassah New Orleans has over 900 members dedicated
to improving the lives of women and children worldwide. Second, if
you are looking for an outlet to let your creative juices flow, volunteer
to work on the Hadassah Goes Bollywood fundraiser and help us
raise funds to support our programs and projects in the United States
and Israel.
As members of Hadassah, we know that we are providing much
needed and appreciated funds for medical research, education,
patient care, and leadership development in Israel and the United
States. We can also be proud of the ways we pursue our own dreams
and support each other to achieve amazing goals and make our
community great. We do it because we are Hadassah ladies/women
and HADASSAH is the POWER OF WOMEN WHO DO!
Looking forward to seeing you soon,
Charisse Sands
Food for Thought
More than 30 women and men gathered on a Sunday morning
in late February for a delicious brunch and book review cosponsored with Shir Chadash Sisterhood, which provided
both food for thought and food for the tummy. Rabbi Ethan
Linden’s review of The Spinoza Problem: A Novel, by Irvin
Yalom, was followed by a spirited discussion.
national office. With Michele’s help we enrolled Hadassah NO in the
online services of MailChimp. Through MailChimp we sorted our
members by legislative and congressional districts so we will be able to
use this program for our online advocacy campaign.
We are nearly ready to begin our advocacy campaign!!! When we send
out campaign emails, we will ask or call for action on legislative issues
related to Medicaid expansion and access to health care, equal pay for
women, sexual assault and domestic violence, and more. We may ask
you to contact your state legislators and ask for their support on one
of those key issues or to oppose certain pieces of legislation harmful
to women’s interests. We also may ask you to attend /meet /organize
meetings with legislators.
Through our grassroot efforts we hope to improve the lives of women
and families in our community. Please know that we appreciate what
you are doing for our organization. Advocacy needs more than just one
or two people! If you want to create change then we need your help!
Please contact Teri Gross [email protected] and/or Ilana Reisin
[email protected] with any questions or suggestions and begin to
spread the word to our members.

The WOW of Chagall
Art critics have referred to Marc Chagall as the "quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century." His fanciful
images of shtetl life and use of color defined his style.
Join us as we learn from Irit Sirkes, a local artist, about Chagall’s modernistic approach to art and how his Jewish
education and passion for biblical themes inspired him to create the famous Chagall windows at Hadassah Hospital in
Jerusalem.
Experience the WOW of Chagall and then create your own "stained glass" window. This two-part program will take
place on Sundays, August 7 and 21. More info to come.

In the Readers’ Circle
You Are What You Eat: Neat Eats
Please join us for the Hadassah Readers’ Circle! All members,
associates, and friends are invited to attend these meetings hosted by
various members.
In a country where candy displays are nested adjacent to cash
registers at every store imaginable, and drinking soda is a
birthright, Hadassah New Orleans, through the Neat Eats: In
Pursuit of Good Health educational series, taught our young
people “they are what they eat.” In a two-part program for
the children of Torah Academy and the Jewish Community
Day School, we empowered children through a multisensory
approach and reeducated them on the ABC’s of optimal
nutrition in a fun and innovative way. In Part I, Joy Feldman,
author of Is Your Hair Made of Donuts? read her book, led
a game of “Nutrition Jeopardy,” and made fresh carrot juice
followed up with a Yum and Yuck taste test contest. Happy to
report that carrot juice won the majority vote for “Yummy”
by the children. Yay! In Part II, Chef Lee Sands of the
Audubon Tea Room provided a delicious take on creating a
healthy salad, complete with a fruit smoothie salad dressing.
Tuesday, May 10, 7:00-9:00 pm
All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr
At this meeting, which will be held at Origami Japanese Restaurant at

Troubled Memory by Lawrence Powell
This book tells the story of a survivor (Anne Sorecki Levy) of the
Warsaw Ghetto, her family's flight, and relocation to New Orleans,
which motivated her fight to discredit David Duke in his 1991 run for
governor.

Those Hadassah members who are
old enough may remember the blueand-white metal boxes that were
widely distributed to collect funds for
JNF. Some families called such a box
a "pushke"—a Yiddish word derived
from Polish that means a little can
or container to collect money for
tzedakah donations. On Shabbat
eve, before the candles are lit, it is a
custom to put coins in the pushke.
Nowadays, Hadassah distributes red
cardboard boxes to achieve the same
goal. Some families use colorful
containers enthusiastically crafted by
their youngest members at religious
school. Others choose to put their
coins into artistic tzedakah boxes
made of such materials as copper
and glass.

JEWISH NATIONAL FUND: TZEDAKAH BOXES AND TREE CERTIFICATES
As the largest partner of Jewish
National Fund (JNF), Hadassah
works to develop barren land, replant
forests, build reservoirs, and support
the clean-up of polluted waterways.

Technology – Library Fund
by Sue Daube
Another way to support JNF is to
purchase Tree Certificates to honor
or remember friends or relatives
on significant occasions. The
certificates are all beautiful, featuring
photographs or artwork depicting
trees in Israel. A certificate that
appeals particularly to those who are
not Jewish shows a view of the city
of Jerusalem with the caption, "Trees
have been planted in the Holy Land."
During the last year, I have received
six filled tzedakah boxes containing
a total of $193.87. I have also mailed
out certificates for 18 trees, totaling
$324.00. The grand total is $517.87.
Please contact me if you have
tzedakah money to donate or wish to
purchase tree certificates. The cost of
each tree is $18, and checks should
be written to Hadassah, care of Susan
