2015 Annual Report - Somerville Homeless Coalition
SOMERVILLE HOMELESS COALITION 2015 Annual Report C elebrating 30 years of support, housing & community for the homeless 1 2015: year in review Dear Supporters and Friends Overall Impact in 2015 Thirty years ago a handful of concerned citizens formed the Somerville Homeless Coalition and opened the first shelter for adults in Somerville, with six beds. Since then we have added numerous programs and services to go beyond the triage of shelter to truly helping get families and individuals out of homelessness. Today we serve over 2,000 individuals a year. As you read our Annual Report we hope you will get a good sense of the impact your donations make – from helping our shelter guests search for housing, to providing fresh produce to 95% of the clients coming to Project SOUP, to preventing a family from falling into homelessness. While public funding provides about 69% of our income, it’s donations like yours that allow us to give the individual attention and support we know is critical to helping people stabilize their lives and live as independently as possible. At the end of 2015 we discovered that one member of our staff had been mismanaging funds. We have been working with great diligence to rectify the situation and improve our systems. We are confident that SHC will come through this troublesome time stronger and more stable than ever before. The need for homeless services is still present and we want to assure you that SHC remains committed to our mission to address this need. Throughout this time we have continued to provide services and housing solutions to the families and individuals who come asking for help to find and maintain permanent housing. We hope you saw the video that Newfangled Studios made for us, “It Takes a Somervillage” with a great song from a local band, Hallelujah the Hills. Please go to our web site if you haven’t. Like the quilt design theme throughout this report, we know that working together as a community that cares we will end hunger and homelessness. Please let us know if you’d like any more information, we’re happy to talk with you. In 2015, SHC served a total of 2,105 people including: 30 years ago 665 children from 999 households SHC started with six beds in one shelter, and grew to 1,202 provide a full complement of services to help people wherever they are in their experience of homelessness. 319 PREVENTION 162 Thank you again for your support; we couldn’t do our work without you. 130 292 FOOD PANTRY HOUSING CASE MANAGEMENT SHELTERS = People served in 2015 Tom White President 1985 Somerville Homeless Coalition incorporated as a nonprofit organization. Project SOUP Food Pantry joins the Somerville Homeless Coalition. First homeless shelter opens in Somerville with 6 beds. . 2007 1996 1987 2 The journey from being homeless to housed is not always a direct route, and often takes months or years. 2015 Project SOUP gets walkin cooler to store more fresh vegetables, fruits and dairy products for food pantry users 2012 3 SHELTER Breaking the Cycle of Homelessness & HOUSING PROGRAMS Guests and clients of SHC receive support from their case managers that goes beyond the basic needs of accessing food and housing. Our case managers help restore self-esteem by treating everyone with dignity and respect. Case managers both advocate for homeless people and help their clients advocate for themselves -- restoring their status as full members of our community. Many people need more than a place to stay when they become homeless. Lance benefited from the safety and stability of our shelter, the support of his case manager, and start-up funds from our prevention program to regain his stability and independence and move back into a home of his own. The generous support of our donors helps sustain all of these programs, making sure that Lance, and hundreds of others, receive the help they need to get back on their feet. Tammy, an SHC client and Adult Shelter guest, found her voice as an advocate when she testified before the Joint Committee on Elder Affairs in October regarding House Bill 529, An Act Relative to Assisting Elders and People with Disabilities. This bill would increase Emergency Assistance for Elderly, Disabled, and Children (EAEDC) benefits from $303 a month to $428 a month -- for those who are housed. Currently, a homeless person who qualifies for this benefit receives only $92.80 a month. Tammy shared from her personal experience as a homeless elder how $92.80 isn’t enough to live on. This bill would increase those benefits to $428 a month, too. “Never give up hope,” declares Lance, of his three-and-a-half year experience with homelessness. After getting laid off from his construction job, he stayed in a number of shelters in and around Boston. Eventually, Lance found his way to the Somerville Homeless Coalition. With the support and guidance of his case manager, he filed numerous applications for housing and after about a year secured a place of his own. Programs People served Prevention Case Management Supportive Housing Shelter TOTAL 319 292 162 130 At a Legislative Action Day at the statehouse a few months later, Senator Pat Jehlen credited Tammy’s testimony as a major reason why Bill 529 was reported favorably and is now in the House of Ways and Means Committee. Lance couldn’t be happier in his new home! Distribution of Housing Services Prevention Case Management 35% 32% 903 15% 18% Supportive Housing Public benefits are a key component in the package of solutions to help people survive and recover from being homeless. Gaining the skills to advocate for those benefits is one step in breaking the cycle of homelessness. Being homeless has especially negative impacts on children. From poor health to interrupted schooling, many homeless children are destined to continue the cycle of homelessness as adults. “Having a stable home saved my life, and my children’s. It was the best thing that ever happened to her,” Denise says about her daughter, Shayna, after they got into SHC’s permanent housing program. From that stability, Shayna completed high school, and then went on to graduate from college. Getting an education is one of the keys to breaking the cycle of poverty and homelessness. For each family housed through SHC’s programs, we are helping people today and the generations that follow. But I wanted to do more than simply write a check to an organization. My goal was to find an organization that truly cares for its clients and that is dedicated to helping them, and I wanted to be directly involved in providing that help. I reached out to the Somerville Homeless Coalition and I was very impressed to find a team of wonderful people that provide housing, food and case management to people in need and they are always striving to help more people every day. In the last 2 years I’ve been lucky enough to purchase food, clothing and back-to-school items for clients at the shelters, help to organize and recruit sponsors for the Annual Golf Tournament fundraiser, paint the Family Shelter, become a member of the SHC Board and get to know an amazing group of people dedicated to helping anyone in need. Working with the Somerville Homeless Coalition has been the most rewarding experience of my life and I feel very lucky to have become a part of their family. One of the best things she loves about it is being able to host friends who need a place to stay. Aware that many people are homeless, and wanting to do something to “pay it forward” – to share the benefits she enjoys so that others may benefit when they are in need -- she invited her guests to make a donation that she would collect for an agency serving homeless people. She also contributes to this fund when she stays at the home of someone else. After a few years of visits, and donations ranging from $5 and up, she presented the Somerville Homeless Coalition with $310! Thank you, Amy and friends, for your generosity of spirit and creative approach to “sharing the wealth.” Amy Novikoff with boyfriend Seth Izen and friend Rachel Bedick running in SHC’s 5K for the first time! 13 Business and Organization Donors 4 Buyers Real Estate 5 Wits Companies Abt Associates, Inc. At SHC’s Family Shelter, she worked with a case manager and really began to turn her situation around. With that extra guidance and support, she accessed benefits and found a good daycare program for her 3-year-old daughter with autism. “It’s good to have someone to talk to,” Fabienne says about working with her case manager. With that assistance and encouragement, she redoubled her efforts to apply for housing, completing 37 applications in a few months. “I know my hard work will pay off,” affirms Fabienne. Her persistence, patience and hope, as well as a sense of humor, helped her get through the ups and downs of the long process. SHC’s supportive housing program is remarkably successful, helping get homeless people into housing, and providing on-going support afterwards to help them stay housed and not become homeless again. Fabienne signing the papers for her own apartment, and son Samuel lending a helpful hand with little sister Malia. 15 Staff & Board Mark Alston-Follansbee Executive Director Michael W.
